Hunter Community Expansion Revamp Project
A while ago I wrote an article about fixing pet tanking. I still think there’s some valid points from it, so much of this will be adapted from that article.
Soloing, frankly, is in a decent place. The pet tanking mechanics that have been underpowered and/or broken are the main hindrance to either soloing or tanking these days. So that’s what we’ll be focusing on.
We don’t expect Blizzard to implement all or even most of these. But we do hope they consider any that are able to be implemented.
The Balancing Act
In an earlier HCERP entry, we flirted with the idea of a full tanking spec. While I don’t think that’s a terrible idea, it’s probably not likely.
Hunters have always existed in the aether between “can’t tank” and “raid tank.” We’ve been able to pet tank 5M heroics pretty early in an expansion, and the occasional raid boss (usually a tier or two of content behind). This is fine, but even these became harder in MoP. Let’s look at why.
Make Sure Growl Works
I love the Growl change in patch 5.4. Love it. But by all accounts, it still only works sporadically. Make sure the aggro increase applies correctly, to all mobs/bosses. Further, I’d expect it to work on instance and raid bosses as well, which is hasn’t always done.
Pets are magic against AoE damage and decent against magic damage. And horrible with physical damage. They need an armor boost, or they’ll routinely get crushed. A slight bump to the % gained from hunters would be sufficient, or perhaps a higher base armor.
It is ok if this only applies to Tenacity pets.
Similarly, pets’ health is somewhat low compared to player health, at least in relation to where they were in past expansions. A small bump is all that’s needed to provide the buffer we need between constant terror of a two-shot from a boss and being acceptable.
Again, if this only applies to Tenacity pets, I think that’s an acceptable compromise.
Make Sure You Keep…
- Pets’ ability to be defense capped.
- The increased heals that pets take.
- Defensive abilities like Cower and the turtle’s Shell Shield.
This is the trickiest one. The old Eyes of the Beast was wonderful for pet movement, but nerfed dps almost entirely and left the hunter vulnerable. More recent solutions have had erratic results, with exact pet movement and positioning made impossible.
Ideally, we need something like Eyes of the Beast, but without the massive loss of dps and, more importantly, leaving our hunter immobile and completely vulnerable. An ability where we ride our pets (like a vehicle) might be a solution. Or where the hunter becomes “phased” from damage.
I don’t expect this to be possible without ANY loss in dps. There should be a sacrifice in that department. But this is a big, big area keeping us from doing more with soloing and tanking. It needs attention.
