Patch 4.3 Hotfix: Noxious Stings

Posted: by Frostheim

Blizzard announced a series of hotfixes yesterday, including a hotfix for Noxious Stings, stating:

Multiple hunters attacking the same target should now see the proper benefit from Noxious Stings.

It’s very interesting to see confirmation of this bug and the fix — though it should be noted that the actual hotfix to the Noxious Stings bug was applied nearly two weeks ago, so don’t expect to see any improvement over last week’s raid parses. Here’s what happened:

Only one hunter was able to benefit from Noxious Stings at a time, and it was always the hunter who cast Serpent Sting last. Another hunter SV hunter with Noxious Stings would not benefit from the 10% damage increase if someone manually cast Serpent Sting after him. For raids with multiple SV hunters, this is a huge deal — that’s a lot of dps.

This bug was reported first on the MMO-C forums, and then Elitist Jerks, back around the 10th of Feb or so. When Zeherah pointed out the thread to me (which was a little funky on the testing side, so needed confirmation) I hopped in game, grabbed a helpful hunter, stripped nekkid with a white gun and tested it out. I was able to really quickly prove there was no  bug in effect. But by then people were reporting that the bug was stealth-hotfixed.

Since I was never able to confirm the bug’s existence I never posted about it — but this latest hotfix report confirms that this bug did indeed exist. So if you have two SV hunters in your raid and your (or their) dps went up significantly in the last week or two, this may well be why.

Im messing about atm on target dummy trying to work out if it is even Applying Noxious Stings …

Makes no difference which order i use the shots i see no icon on target to tell me it is there -.-

    A little help please!

Hey Kelarai. Noxious Stings doesn’t have an icon/debuff. It’s just a talent for SV hunters. As grandpappy reported, the bug has already been fixed, so there’s nothing to worry about (as far as i know) with noxious stings.

    • Frostheim says:

Here’s how you test it. Strip naked. Get the lowest ilvl white weapon possible (so your damage range is very small). Auto shot the target dummy with no pet, when no one else it attacking it. You’ll see your auto shots (white damage) doing almost the same damage every shot.

Now apply Serpent Sting. Your auto-shot damage should now be about 10% higher.

Not sure where to post this, but Ive noticed alot of the top hunters have went crit/mastery over haste. most are around 40% crit, 1000 haste and 1200 ( or more) mastery. Im sensing this is because Surv. is the strongest spec sense the last patch. Im 399 IL and am pulling a little more dps with crit/mastery over crit/haste. Was wonder if you’d make a post on this and clear the air on what caps we should be looking for. Once again, Thanks for all your help. You guys rock!! Skullmann (Stormreaver)

Patch 4.3.2 Update Note: Right now in 4.3.2 SV is the top spec, and with your t13 set bonus you’ll want to reforge into crit, and then into mastery when you can’t reforge into crit. SV now wants to get rid of haste. Earlier in the expansion SV wanted to get rid of mastery.

  3. Tienlung says:

You only want to necessarily reforge into crit/mastery if you have at least the 2p DS tier. The extra focus from this bonus is powerful enough that haste becomes devalued. If you are looking at higher ilvl hunters, you’ll notice they usually have over 1000 haste because it’s impossible to reforge anymore of it away. Once you get heroic replacements for the otherwise better itemized normal pieces (certain slots only) you’ll notice you have an obscene amount of haste on yer gear.

    Myself, for example, I have

    • Tienlung says:

2639 crit, 1744 mastery, and 1042 haste. Seems to be going pretty well, as I pulled 47.7k dps on 25 h ultrax last week.

Thanks for the info once again Frost, but I am missing Friday Hunter Demotivational Poster day!

  5. Oricc says:

Frostheim, we didn’t get a Hunter Poster Friday this week, does that mean you’re all out of submissions to show us or will it resume next week?

This sort of problem leads me to believe Blizzard doesn’t test with multiples of a class in a raid group.
