I’ve gotten a couple of reports that the Ghost Hydra is now it’s own pet family (hydra) in patch 4.1: a ferocity pet with the special ability Bellowing Roar that gives the 5% crit chance buff. Previously the Ghost Hydra was considered a tenacity pet. No word yet on whether the Ghost Hydra is tamable again.
For those of you unaware, the Ghost Hydra was at one point tamable (along with the slime pet) from the Oracles daily quest, A Cleansing Song. During the quest you summoned the creatures, and for a while you could tame them while summoned. To my knowledge they removed the ability to tame them, but let people keep the pets — which were considered to be in the crocolisk family.
Now that they have a family of their own, is the hydra tamable once more? And regardless of whether it is or is not, I have to assume the developers have plans to put more tamable hydras in the game (or, perhaps, have even done so already but we haven’t found them).
So if anyone out there has a chance, please pop over to the Oracle daily and see if that Ghost Hydra (or the slime!) is tamable again and drop us a note in the comments!

Not sure how links work on here, but I took this screen shot last night. You can see that the Hydra is it’s own family now and is a Fero pet. http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m294/Bar_Code_Four/WoWScrnShot_042611_232335-1.jpg
Bah! Daily wasn’t up for me. Are they Exotic?
I tried 2 different hydras last night and there werent tamable. Is this only for the ghost hydra?
The good folks over at the Petopia forums have been following the hydra saga ever since they started making changes to them on the PTR. Folks have tried, but thus far, no hydras are currently tamable. There is hope, however, that they will be brought on board as a fully tamable family in 4.2.
I’ve noticed that sadly, my Super Giant Wasp, Sapphire Hive Queen, is no longer super huge. I tamed her back in LK when she was bugged and would be twice the size of my Orc. She stayed that way, until I whipped her out post-patch and she’s down to normal size. For shame Blizzard. For shame.
You’re likely using the glyph that reduces the size of your pet. It was originally Glyph of Mend pet and has now changed to Glyph of Lesser Proportion.
I had that glyph. So I went and replaced it with something else, and no change to my pet. Dismissed/Recalled, nothing. I even went and killed him, and revived, hoping it would restore my pet’s former super sized glory, and nothing. Guess he’s stuck at normal size forever now.
On a side note, am I the only one who hasn’t seen a difference with or without that Lesser Proportion glyph? Seems like it’s broken.
My cat was completely changed last night. I originally had a pure white cat from Winterspring that got changed to the (I think) Banglesh model (white and black striped cat) when I transferred to my current server by mistake and now either they replaced that model entirely or something else has happened.
My cat is now a base white color with a slit blue tint, has a cold blue mane that goes down it’s back and has the same face as the Winterspring Frost Sabres. It looks like a feral druid now. None of the other hunters in my guild had their cats change and this was the only pet of mine that has a modified look.
You likely have one of the cats from Winterspring. Several Winterspring frostsabers had their models updated, and the Rak’Shiri model has been reverted to its pre-Cataclysm appearance. You can check the appearance changes on Petopia.
Try going to wow-petopia.com. They often have a list of all the models that got changed with any specific patch, and often which pet you can go tame to gain your old look back.
Too bad I was on a “ghost” pet kick when I got my hydra, I did have the slime, but it kept getting goo all over in the tiny stable and had to be salted.
As for if the Hydra is/will be exotic? I would guess no since the Hydra family is on live and I am able to have it out in MM (when picture was taken)
The ghost Hydra is technically the only Hydra that can be a pet and it in fact did have an identity crisis up until the patch. I beleive the hydra was raised by crocolisks and now spending a little more time exploring the world has found it was not like the other crocolisks.
The quest mobs are no longer tameable and did not change with the patch.
My pet worm Harvey (ghost worm from Sons of Hodir daily), is also no longer tameable. I went to get another ghost worm for my other BM hunter, and he couldn’t tame it. This was patch 4.06, haven’t been back up there since 4.1 was released.
Thats odd. I was able to tame the ghost worm about a month ago. I’d try again if you really want it.
I still have the slime but I dropped the hydra way back when because the noise drove the guild nuts in raids!
I’m wondering if the comment by Fawatam has anything to do with the glyph change? First thing I did on loggin in was drop the Glyph of Lesser Proportion.
Apparently, those who tamed the ghost hydra back in WotLK during the Oracle daily, had their hydra transformed to a Ferocity pet when they logged into Patch 4.1 The ghost hydra NOT an exotic pet for those lucky hunters.

Sweet…I might have to take my old ghost hydra out of the stable…provided he still doesn’t make that annoying noise every 5 seconds.
I do BG PvP with my Ghost Hydra. As tenacity, it can stay up a fair amount. The crock’s movement debuff CD is very very rapid and effective. I also have to think that when someone has a Ghost Hydra on them, they skip a CD or two wondering what the hell it is.
As for the sound, well it isn’t by my side much.
Still makes the annoying noise. I find it is best to park it beside the pally in your groups and let it annoy him/her instead.
None of the “Cleansing Song” creatures are tameable as of 4-27-11. I just tried all three. Looks like you had to have this guy up front.
Alas, I just tried the Daily (A Cleansing Song) for the Oracles and neither the slime nor the ghost hydra are as yet tamable. Thats a real bummer ):
I have that one as well and was quite disappointed to see her so tiny now.
I had already get rid of the glyph before calling her so that was not the case – besides, from what I observed the size change caused by the glyph was much smaller than the devastating shrinkage my poor blue wasp has gone through.
Hm, that was meant to be a reply for Fawatam.
I picked up the oracles daily yesterday & high tailed it over to try and tame the ghost hydra, which I missed before due to no stable space. No go =( even tried taming one of the other hydra’s in the area, but nope, no luck. I can only hope that since they made hydra’s their own family that Blizzard will eventually make them tamable for us. Untill then I’m still keeping a slot open for the ghost hydra =)
As for the glyph of lesser porportion, i noticed a difference right off. I had my Aotona out and she was half the size she used to be! Luckily I remember that they changed that glyph and I removed the bloody thing and my Precious returned to her normal, bigger size =D
As of April, 28 not tamable
I tamed one last night they are still tameable
Impossible, I just went out there and they are still not re-tameable.
Sadly, I GM’s cannot restore mine either. ::sigh::
What did you tame?
i try now and ghost hydra is not tameable.
Still not tameable as of the May 2 Hotfix.
Tried to tame today and no luck, is there something needed to be done? .. All 3 beasts were untamable.
My ghost hydra is currently a little bugged. I had actually leveled him up to 85 a week after cata was released, was a great crocolisk. Logged in after the patch and went to check everything out and noticed his talents were wiped and he was missing 6 talent points at 85. Checked out his abilities in the spellbook, it turns out patched wipe his talent points but not his abilities and only gave him back 11 talent points so now I have a 17pt tenacity/11pt ferocity hydra.
nice post. thanks.
As of May 5, 2011 the Spirit of Atha and other Hydra’s in the area are not tameable on the 4.2 PTR.
