Tapington – New WHU PvP Writer

Posted: by Tapington

G’day WHU! How is everyone? Excited to ravage some mages? Make rogues bleed from places they aren’t used to bleeding from? Well, you’re in luck. I’ll be your new PvP coach. But first a small introduction…

I come from a place called Saurfang, where the players are scarce, and the pvpers even scarcer. We are but a humble server, with incredibly overpriced everythings on the AH, that have caused me to huddle into an economical depression regarding my in-game bank account, as I’m now more broke than a third world country, thanks to the only income I get being looting the dead bodies of those bloody mages in battlegrounds.

But we make the best with what we’ve got.

Jokes aside. My name is Michael, but my friends (or so they’ve led me to believe) call me Tapington, or Pxl, or in arena, that “dead, useless thing in the corner.” I’ve been playing since a few weeks before the release of BC and have participated in every season of Arena. A few things that I have accomplished during that time is a 2k+ rating in 2′s and 3′s on a Resto/Feral druid, Rogue, Mage, Hunter, Priest. Unfortunately the teams I have played on never finished the season, and have for the last 8 seasons, not been awarded one title.

I have played a wide variety of comps in the arena scene from multiple perspectives. In 2′s I have played almost every comp available and viable at the time with the classes available to me. I have also played as to what some would consider to be “high rated’, Wizard cleaves, Hunter/Lock/Shaman, Hunter Lock/Priest, Hunter/Priest/Shaman, Hunter/DK/Priest, Druid/Rogue/Mage/, Unholyplay, Shatterplay, Shadowplay, and my current comp of RMP.

I have held the #1 Hunter on BG6 position for the duration of 4.0.3, and held the #1 Hunter/DK/Druid team in the world for the duration of 4.0.3, and for a few weeks in 4.0.6.

But fancy wording and lingo aside, I’ve enjoyed this game from multiple perspectives, and I feel that it has given me a decent knowledge of the game, at least from a PvP standpoint. My PvE endeavors never left Karazhan. Damn Kara chess event.

Anyways, back to the topic at hand, slaughtering mages and all the delicious weak things on the battlefield, I would love to know what sort of info you guys are looking for. Are you interesting in specs, talent choices, glyphs, 2v2 strats, 3v3 strats, 5v5 strats, gearing options, arena observations, etc.? What would the WHU community like to know about their hunter? I’ll keep an eye on the comments and messages you guys leave behind, and I’ll take it up the ideas with Frostheim and post what is petitioned for the most. Of course a basic overall guide is already on the way, but unfortunately I have no ETA for it. Lets say Soon™.

Youtube Link: Tapington. These are just some “fun” videos I made to a request of a few hunters of the guild I’m in. They were the ones who suggested I contact Frostheim in the first place. They’re not that entertaining, nor educational, but it’s interesting to see the state of hunters.

I’d like to quickly thank everyone on WHU, and especially Frostheim for the opportunity to write some guides for the hunter community. I look forward to posting some of what I hope to be quality material soon, and hope everyone enjoys it just as much as I will writing it.

    Welcome to WHU!
I would like to see a talent and glyph guide, as i believe talking about talents and glyphs would also touch the subject of what hunters should basically be doing in a PvP environment.
Starting with the basics are always a solid choice, I’d say.

  2. Lirithiel says:

Second to welcome you to the wonderful site that is WHU! (if I get this up in time)

I think the most sensible thing to do is start at the very beginning which would probly be specs (talents, glyphs etc). I know other sites cover this but it’s mostly for arena and I’m sure the choices differ somewhat from bgs which is what I do most of the time. I only started dipping into arenas in WotLK so my knowledge is still very limited.

But anything you choose to blog on will be eagerly devoured by the hunters on this site I’m sure.

And a big ty to Frost for bringing Tapington on board.

    /salute

  3. Subai says:

Welcome to WHU, I hope you can share the mage tears around :P .

  4. Kejsaren says:

I would like some 2v2, 3v3 guides and some guides vs melee classes.

  5. I-CEE says:

welcome looking forward to your guides and insights

  6. Hateful says:

Small how to videos would be awesome!
Example: How to make rogue bleed from anus after you’ve lost 80% health from a stunlock!

  7. pants says:

    Rogues everywhere should start clenching…
Anyways…I think it would be great just to see some basic speccing and glyphs and such first off.

  8. Brenin says:

    Welcome Tapington!

I’d like to see something about BG’s and strats against different classes and their specs.

  9. Anzor says:

    Got a couple Q’s

    1) What makes a composition “viable?” What does “viable” mean from a PvP perspective?
    2) How do you interpret patch notes from a PvP perspective?
    3) Where/how do you find good PvP’ers? PvP guilds?
    4) What’s a PvP server like compared to a PvE?

    • Hateful says:

I can answer #4: You die a lot while leveling your chars (ganked)! Because the rest, these days, is the same as PvE servers!

    • Tapington says:

A@#1: Viable means that the comp has crowd control with different DR’s, which makes it possible to land kills. It also means the classes have synergy and go well together, like Rogue/Mage/Priest.

A@#2: Well, they affect PvP in the same way changes affect PvE most of the time.

A@#3: You can find them outside Orgrimmar/Stormwind. If you’re looking for an arena partner, made a thread on your server forums.

A@#4: Haven’t been one on ages. You usually just get 5v1′d.

  10. shadowelf says:

Welcome. I am looking forward seeing your pvp guides.
The thing I really like about WHU is that frost posts guides for all 3 specs no matter what is the top spec at the moment. As an unbudgeable BM (it being the spec I like to play) this is especially valuable for me.
I hope you carry on with the tradition and give us tips and tacts covering all 3 specs.

Also I would love to see a 1 on 1 guide against all the class specs. Their abilities that concerns us etc. Dispelable buffs etc.

Since you say you played other classes at PVP too, your experience would invaluable to hunters who are not that well informed about other class’es abilities.

And also tips on most viable comps per hunter spec would be most welcome.

And rated BG’s is also a virgin subject. There is not enough information about it. So a guide on that would be very valuable too.

    • Erithorn says:

I definitely agree with shadowelf in that I’d love to see each guide written from either a generic hunter perspective, or with specifics regarding each spec. I personally play SV (have since I first rolled my Hunter) with BM as off-spec just for bringing exotic pets when needed.

I think most hunters here, due to the nature of this site, are PvE focused hunters looking to start getting into PvP. Otherwise they probably are already going elsewhere for information.

Basics are a definite first step. Provide overviews of everything, but with a PvP perspective, and making note of how some talents may be good for Arenas, but not BGs and vice versa:
      Talents for each Spec
Stats and Gear: Damage (Hit, SpPen) vs Survivability (Stam/Resilience) and others.
Pets: Abilities (for each Family) and Talents (for each Type).

After the basic guides are done, get into specific scenarios (BG Overview, Arena Overview, Defending yourself against world PvP), and then specific maps (Tol Barad, specific Battlegrounds, 2v2, 3v3, 5v5)

Macro and Addon Guides can also be helpful filler, as well as references to other guides for basic PvP information that may not be Hunter specific.

  11. bier says:

As a complete idiot to PvP I personally would like to know what I really need to simply get started (In book title terms :The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Hunter PvP” is basically what I’m after). Should I buy the full craftable pvp set and use jp to get some of the other blues? How much resilience is necessary, or what are some good targets (not going to be able to instantly grab all the vicious stuff so what are realistic first steps/goals)? What are just some good solid starter tactics for facing the different classes I should/need work on?

    Thanks

    • Tapington says:

I would just start farming honour and grab the Bloodthirsty set, don’t worry about the crafted sets. I think once you get around 2.5k-3k resilience you start to feel the difference. Once you’re around 3.5k, you’ll really feel the full effect of resilience. I would start doing the 5 games a week ASAP to get some vicious gear. It’s quite easy just grab a buddy and have a ball. I’ll go into a detailed tactics guide later.

  12. Phyllixia says:

I would like tips against specific classes… eg. what to do against warriors, mages… etc. please :)

Also – I notice you don’t seem to switch out of AotF at all – do you find it’s not worth switching back and forth between Hawk/Fox?

    • Mangacro says:

Its well worth when ur trained by melee if u have finger space imo, make 2 saperate macros for steady
      #showtooltip
      /cast !Aspect of The Fox
      /cast steady shot

and the other one with hawk

dunno if thats correct spelling and cos im not able to log into WoW atm

    • Tapington says:

At the time of recording the buff to AotH had not yet gone through, so it only added a measly ~700 ap. With the “One With Nature” talent, it now gives 2600ap. You should be in hawk most of the time, and only AotF when being trained.

    • kvikramg says:

I would really like this as well. Especially the melee classes rogues, warriors ..there stun/daze or whatever are so devastating.

  13. Gerloth says:

Welcome to WHU. I would be intrested in bgs more than arena. So any suggestions in that area. But I am sure in time you will cover it all. Also spec and glyphs is good place to start. Have fun and good luck dealing with Frost!

  14. nheco says:

First of all welcome, WHU needed a pvp perspective by some1 like you, hope you enjoy ur stay, as well as all other hunters (and non-hunters that check this site wishing being one)

i have couple things i would like to know about pvp like about stats, should we get right away the 5% hit even if that means reforging/geming with hit, what exactly we benefit from spell pen (i think about arcane maybe, but is it really worth it and why)

best enchants, like i’ve noticed agi/stam on legs and stam+movement speed on feet, the usual what’s best used in and why so we can read and say “hell, ur right!”

and ofc best tactics to use vs other classes (like rogues, and paladins, i hate paladins) either 1vs1, arena (or bg perspective if changes anything)

Cheers and may your arrow always find its target. PEACE

    • Tapington says:

5% Hit before anything else, and spell pen is an interesting one for hunters to gem. The best way to gem for it is 3x “Stormy Ocean Sapphires” and the spell pen cloak enchant. The reason is that a few of our key offensive abilities, eg. tranquilizing shot, explosive shot, arcane shot, chimera shot etc. can be resisted and lower your damage significantly. Unfortunately spell pen doesn’t apply to our traps, and hasn’t for a long time, so you will see resists on them from time to time.

  15. Mangacro says:

    Welcome to the WHU bro,
and i would like to see guides bout classes that we cant kill so ezly like Spriest and Locks cos tbh mages got blow apart in 2 gcds after u tranq the shield, but i gesse those kind of stuff not lots of hunters know of :P
and if i may make a suggestion u should drop minig and get some +agi proffesion like enc or something like that when ur able to get some gold, since hunters dont have much use of stamine cos were rearly trained in arenas and that extra dmg and crit is well worth it

  16. maximilliion says:

Since we do have a lot of new hunters in here for PVP, I would have to echo what some have said so far in here.

    1. BATTLEGROUNDS — Not rated. Reg BGs for the hunter who is decked out in 346 PVE gear.
    a. This would include Pets, Spec, Glyphs, how to survive, beginning Macros, and which piece of gear to buy first.
    b. Secondly you could add in how people typically go for hunters and what beginning tactics to use against the classes we typically have trouble against. (IE Paladin, Drood, Spriest)

    2. Ok, now we have some gear, lets talk about Gemming and hitting the hit Cap. This would also be an opprotune time to talk about reforging to the “best stat.” Lets not forget enchants.

    3. STEP INTO THE ARENA! — Now it’s time to get some conquest points.
    a. First Items to get (2h polearm with 130 Agi) or (2x 1h rippers with Pyrium Wpn Chain and 65 Atk Pwr)
    b. MACROS MACROS MACROS!!!
    c. Keybinds
    d. Strategy
    e. Other classes–this is where you can talk about making Rouges Bleed from the Anus and Mages *POOF* into thin air with AiS-CoS-SS-SS-AS-AS-KS-KS
    f. What to expect when hitting the higher ratings… IE. 1600/1800/2000/2200/2400/2600

That’s about all I have, I think this is a great opprotunity for our hunting community to get better at PVP and possibly see a better representation in Arenas. I Love the Hunter, I love the Arena, I fair OK at best right now because my skills need improvement and I’m too damn stubborn to Keybind. I look forward to seeing your infinate wisdom spewed onto the WHU Web page.

    Thanks!

    -Max

    • Echo says:

“a. First Items to get (2h polearm with 130 Agi) or (2x 1h rippers with Pyrium Wpn Chain and 65 Atk Pwr)”

Had to reply. I’ve got into pvp a fair bit recently and you should never put anything other than a pyrium weapon chain on your 2h. 2h weapons have better stats in any case so it’s not worth picking up 1h’s because even with the extra enchant it’s a less favourable solution.

  17. maximilliion says:

Oh, I guess #4 would be rated BGs. I have 0 experience in that so …. yea… :D

  18. Xanthius says:

Welcome to the WHU team. As a fairly new pvper, I am excited to see a pvp writer here. I hope it works well for you. One thing I can confidently say is you’ll have a good response. I don’t understand it, but it seems to me like the WHU comments is the only WoW related blog/forums which doesn’t bring out the ugly minds in the WoW community. I know you have a lot of requests for articles but I’ll throw my 2 cents in here as well. Nothing new

I seem to see a lot of hunters not fully understand the importance of maximizing their tools in regards to movement in pvp, be it snares, traps, slows, disengage, etc. As I’ve learned to become a moderately successful pvp hunter, this part of the hunter repertoire is the hardest to learn and most important to master imo.

Other than that, I hate subt rogues. Wouldn’t mind a little help killing their annoying shadowstepping asses :P

    • Fujinamii says:

Sub rogues do suck trick is to be patient if you don’t catch them with a flare……don’t automatically go for your trinket…hunters mark all rogues….also save deterence for there pesky shadowstep and kite away…..Make them burn cool downs early and then pew pew there face off<<<<<<but this is just my opinion I'm sure tapington will have better advice…..these are just my findings in the time I've spent dueling those dirty invisible rogues plz dont troll me :)

  19. maximilliion says:

Edit for number 3 … Pets… Frost, where is the edit button?

  20. Darkbrew says:

Welcome! I look forward to reading your posts. I’d love to see some tips for Arena. I’m actually considering stepping into one.

  21. Omogon says:

Welcome to WHU…..please try to ignore all the jokes about “non-dwarves” ;) many of us here have ‘grown up’ in WoW doing almost exclusively PVE content. Raiding has been the goal. PvP has meant doing BGs now and then and ..after you have all your epic PVE gear…then trying do fill out a PvP set. So there will be lots of “noob” questions from guys who have played for years. I for one, would love to see pretty basic information. I know that I need resillience and am trying to gather a PvP set from Honour points. I’m on a PvP realm so any information on how to avoid dying is good.
I have done exactly two arena matches …both last night….with a warlock who was looking for partner in trade chat…..lost both both had some fun.
I actually USED my sporebat in the 2nd match because we were up against a Pally and a a Mage and my partner the lock figured that slowing cast speeds would be good. Mage and Lock died and I duked it out with the pally for a bit but could not beat him :)
Looking forward to any info you can provide.

  22. Esarhaddon says:

Words words words. The master wants murder!

Welcome, looking forward to reading your articles.

  23. Kiera says:

Welcome to WHU! I have really been looking for good, updated Hunter PvP info so i am very excited for any info you have to share.

In game my main priority is PVE, but I also enjoy random BGs and rated BGs on my raiding off nights- My BF is a PvP addict so I have to PvP with him ;-)

I am interested in the following info, especially as it pertains to BM and SV:

    1. Talent builds- Esp for BM and SV
    2.Pets and pet builds.
    3. Gear, enchants, and gems.
    4. MACROS and key bindings.
    5. BG strategy guides

  24. Ltradium says:

Very nice, Welcome to WHU, just started PvP on my hunter so looking forward to reading what you have to say and any tipes i can gain from your posts, i would like to know the same as what maximilliion said up above, any nice useful addons that you know of will also be nice.

    • maximilliion says:

Gladius on Curse is a must for Arenas. Lets you know what has been casted by the opposing team and informs you what type of spec the class is playing. Good when you go against the Shammie/priest and lets you know if it’s a Spriest/Holy/Disc or resto/ele/enhance.

      • Ltradium says:

yea got that 1, along with deadly PvP, it uses DBM times to show with CDs they have etc, can get abit much in big BGs tho but still quite useful

  25. sercli says:

hahaha i just looked at your armory page and just out of curiosity i looked at your pets and noticed that you have a sporebat inactive. what kind of “l337″ hunter are you?to have the best hunters pet and not use him? didnt you know the spore bat can shoot fire from its sphincter to incenerate rogues? hahaha

  26. Cyferwolf says:

I’m a total pvp noob. I’d love to see some strategies for battlegrounds, as well as just some general talent builds. And honestly, just a basic “things to do in pvp so you don’t constantly get the crap beaten out of you and actually score a kill or two” guide would be helpful.

My boyfriend and I recently got into doing bgs, and so far the large 40 person bgs feel like they’re the only place I can really do anything useful, since at least in those I don’t always get singled out and immediately beaten to a pulp.

    In order of priority:

    1. Basic primer on what to do and not to do to in pvp in general.
    2. talent specs, gear, reforging, and gemming guides for all specs, sv and mm in particular (tried bm, can’t micro manage my pet well enough)
    3. macros and addons that would be helpful in pvp.
    4. specific bg strategies
    5. arena and higher level stuff.

  27. Thompson says:

I would like to see some posts on how to deal with individual classes, I feel that my downfall as a hunter in pvp is not how well I know my own class, but the specific things to watch for in other classes and how I need to respond in certain situations.

It would be useful to have a breakdown of other classes most important, game changing abilities, especially with respect to arenas, specifically 3v3.

    • Tapington says:

I like that idea about spell breakdowns. I’ll add it in the near future.

  28. quori says:

Welcome. We look forward to reading your stuff!!!

  29. Ozolin says:

Any PvP I would do will likely be of the BG variety, mostly Tol Barad, but when I get the bug I’m sure I could find myself elsewhere. I’d be interested to know what I can do to enhance survivability and effectiveness *without* cahnging my standard DPS spec. Can I just switch into a PvP gear set? Are there certain pets that will be of more benefit to the group?

    Thanks!

  30. Ominous says:

Gear, build(s), glyphs / gems / enchants – all that stuff we can do immediately.
After that, strategy advice – both how to play the character and then, maybe later, how to play against specific other popular types.

  31. Ashamel says:

Welcome to the WHU! I know I’m far from the first, but I’m a long time member here on WHU (though I’ve been stalking from the shadows of Google Reader lately!).

I love that we now have a PvP columnist. In answer to the call out of what we’d like to see, I know I have a few things that I’d love:

    1. Of course, the build/gear guides: What is optimum resilience vs. other stat balancing, enchants, etc.
    2. Overall BG guides (what is a solid strategy for winning WSG or Isle of Conquest etc) from a hunter’s perspective. (This may be a pass due to the ease of looking it up in other places, I’m sure you’ll have your plate full with other articles).
    3. Overall Arena guides (how do we best utilize the arena maps, and a brief explanation of the features of each map)
    4. I’d LOVE to see a “Hunter vs. CLASS” write-up!!!! It’d be awesome to see 1v1 strategies here and expand into synergies with other classes to see some of the abilities we normally don’t see as a hunter (that way we can begin forming viable specs for arena play)
    5. EVENTS! I know this is way out there, but we’ve had some awesome in-game events on the WHU. My most memorable moment in PvP was building a 10-hunter WSG group and camping the FR for 5 mins, slaughtering any and all who poked their head in the FR. We ultimately lost b/c people wouldn’t follow a simple order to travel as a group, but it was a HUGELY fun time! I’d love to see all hunter AV’s and AB’s, along with other shenanigans!

  32. Brock says:

I’d like to see some shot priorities and some of your keybinding and action bar setups.

In general, random BG strats are useless because you can’t coordinate with everyone, so I don’t want you to waste time with that. Rated BGs would be a good place for strats, but they are much less popular than arena’s, so I would stick to arena stuff.

I usually start off with a SS and Conc Shot, then ES and CS.

Widow Venom seems to be very weak, lasting only 10 seconds for 15 focus, should I bother?

I usually try and throw some tranq shots at random, unless I see a specific thing I need to clear like Hand of freedom. Is it worth it to use tranq shot often to remove magic buffs?

  33. Brock says:

Also, Black arrow seems like a waste of focus. So I rely on my ice/freezing traps to proc LnL. I noticed you spec BA though. What situation do you find it useful?

  34. Syldinada says:

    Entrapment?

  35. Fugitivelama says:

I would really like to see a few PvP specs. Perhaps one from all 3 specs if that is even viable. I would also really like to see 1v1 strategies or tactics for just about every class out there, mainly rouges. I have not gotten too heavily into pvp as a hunter, however, in the few arena’s and BGs I have run I can see we can be very good at it if played right. I really look forward to you joining the WHU and hopefully make myself and the other WHU readers a viable pvp force. It seems like something I could enjoy once the weekly raid’s are done with.

  36. Chel says:

ADD-ONS! Id love to hear about those.

    Macros too

Gearing up guide (for those starting from scratch or with PvE heroic/raid gear)

  37. Caliea says:

I’d love to hear what’s going through your mind when you first enter a BG, and when you come up on a large group of people. What are the things you’re looking for, thinking of, etc?

I dabble in BGs, and am just starting to gather some PvP gear (at a big, bad 453 Resil right now – woot!) and I do okay while sniping people, and have some decent macros and such for disengaging, wing clipping, etc. But I’d love to figure out what I can do offensively -especially before a rogue starts stabbing me in the kidneys..

I seem to mainly be reactive in BGs and I want to become proactive.

Welcome to WHU and I really look forward to you giving us some things to think about!

  38. Trivia says:

    Hello and welcome!

you’ve asked for suggestions, and here are mine:
I see plenty of hunters in battleground but also in arena (i stopped arena with my hunter, I just don’t fit in there, it’s too small, too many boxes but i still arena with my resto shaman) who would be a lot better off if they knew how to move.
I once saw a hunter backpedal half the map in warsong (at one point, i just stopped healing :s) but in general, kiting properly is difficult. It took me a while to understand this when i started to pvp, a guide would have been very useful back then.
Basically, what I would like to see are things that I can’t find anywhere else. Macro guides and addons and such, all can be found on arenajunkies or elsewhere if searched properly.
I long for tales of battlegrounds and how to manage a hunter in v5 or rbg. That’s my problem in those bracket. I can’t find my place. I have a terrible time placing my freezing trap properly which makes me anxious like hell –> and I play like the worst piece of crap there can be :s
So.. what is you binding for the launch/freezing trap ? :)

  39. goblinhood says:

I’ve been doing 2v2′s for funzies and points and would like a little advice on how to deal with what I’ve found to be my biggest problem class: warriors. My noob team has been able to deal with most classes and comps with reasonable success (we usually get our 5 wins before we hit 10 losses) except for warriors. I usually run away screaming like a baby from warriors and their seemingly endless number of closing abilities and ridiculous self heals.

  40. Draegonfly says:

    Greetings and welcome to WHU.

Recently in guild chat some one said to me “You’re lvl 85 and you JUST got the achievment for WSG?” Tis true, I started my current main following release of Cata so I’ve quite a bit ofback fill to do. The last “serious” pvp adventure for me was gearing up for Kara in “ghetto epics” The world has changed and changed again since then. Convient to your arrival I have recently to started digging into pvp for the basics again.

The biggest problem with any topic in Warcraft is not a lack of info, rather, it seems to be the opposite. You find yourself shifting thru the chaff for the occasional kernel of “useful info”. That is what makes a find like WHU such a treasure. A good start may be a list of:

Reliable resourses for info. A couple of sites have been mentioned in comments but would like to know your opinion on the subject..

    Stat weights. agil > res ? Hit > res? Crit > Res ? Spell Pen > ?

Stat caps. Hard caps soft caps and recommended lvls. In pvp all tarrgets lvl 85 reducing hit rating required.

Character movement is prolly my achiillies heel in pvp and tips in that direction would be aprreciated. In BC I had some handy keybinds and macros that helped loads in overcoming my basic lack of motor skills.

    Keybinds macros and addons

Gemming and enchants for pvp. Some of the best choices are not necessarily obvious. Do I keep my agil gems or got to res ?

I believe there is no topic you can address that someone at some lvl of play will not find helpful.

Again Welcome and thanks for coming.

    1) Cata starting pvp gear
    2) Priority list of gear or stats as you upgrade
    3) Gems and enchants
    4) Specs
    5) Which is better, more forgiving, easier strategically, and / or less dependent on skill – 2′s, 3′s, or 5′s?
    6) Best classes to team up with.
    7) If a sporebat makes rogues bleed from places they aren’t used to bleed from, what makes locks and mages bleed? Seriously though…best pet? Best pet spec? (My money is on the Chimera as the special ability is great in pvp and cast time is the fastest.)

Welcome to the WHU – Glad to have you aboard and really looking forward to your posts for my own enjoyment.

Am really looking forward in addition to guides on gear, gems, enchants, and talents, to one on caps – hard and soft/Min/max requirements for hit, spell pen, haste considerations, stamina, crit and agility and their relative importance. Also, to help understand what (and when) certain PVE items are as good or better than PVP items in a PVP scenario.

Thanks again in advance for volunteering your contribution to this forum I know I speak for all when I say we really appreciate it!!

  43. Arty says:

A very welcome addition to the WHU!

I’d like to know how to tackle other classes one on one. This is for when a member of my raid group challenges me to a duel while we are waiting for everyone, runs around me like a whirlwind, and somehow I’m down on my knees making a arrhhgg sound….as only dwarves do well….

  44. Papaoomowmow says:

Man, its not like we want much from youi…lol.

    Welcome and thanks in advance.

If you can squeeze it in,Tap, I’d like some mention of common (especially amongst beginners) hunter PvP mistakes.

    • Bumpster says:

      1) Don’t backpeddle ever. All Hunters need to learn how to mouse turn and kite their opponent. 2) Don’t burn your trinket right away. Master’s call, scatter shot, snake/freezing traps (with entrapment) are great for gaining distance. 3) In BG’s, try and avoid mismatches and stay with a group. You will loose 3vs1 everytime. 4) Turn off your pets special ability and keybind it, so you have it when you need it. 5) Get as much resilliance as possible and start a PVP set. 6) When in melee range, use Roar of Sacrifice and Raptor Strike to minimize damage.

  45. Vigg says:

Welcome to WHU. I’m looking forward to reading your posts. Other comments have covered all of my requests so I won’t write anymore on that. I do want to say that you will find few negative comments here. Keep up the good work, everyone that contributes.

    Welcome to the WHU!

I’m sure most people are very excited to see such a long awaited addition to the site, as I know I am.

In addition to all the basic guides (gem’s, enchants, specc, rotations ect.) I thought it might be interesting and relevant to the WHU community to include something about PvP vs PvE gear, as well as some mention of PvPing in primarily PvE gear and what that entails. Of course as a PvPer you may have no experience with this sort of stuff however I do think that an alaysis of it may be helpful to people just starting out in PvP.

welcome again! hope you like it!

  48. Sofeladese says:

A big welcome to you, sir, it’s good to know that ALL hunter info is all in one site now, instead of just PvE (no offense Frost.)

I’d definitely like to hear your thoughts on the strengths and weaknesses of each spec, and which classes are hardest to counter as a hunter. Been having trouble with holy paladins and tree droods myself.

  49. Tapington says:

Thanks alot for the input guys. I really appreciate the questions you have asked and will address most of them in a “Commonly Asked Questions” portion of the beginner’s guide. Also I have written down a lot of your suggestions and will include such 1v1 guides and strats shortly after the first guide. There is so much I have to share about positioning, movement, situational awareness etc. that I’m anxious to get the material out ASAP. My first guide will go through the talent specs, glyphs and gearing, as well as macros and keybinding and much more. I can’t give an accurate ETA on the guide, because I have alot of ideas for it, but it will be Soon. I promise. Thanks again for your feedback. – Tap Happy.

Welcome, I could use the help on pvpz :D

Have fun here on the WHU.

  51. UniQ says:

Put your focus on 3v3, explain what comp works and why. IMO avoid 2v2, as every able hunter should, that bracket is not good for us in any way but I guess you could explain what works if you really want to do 2v2 but explain that it is a bad idea :P

I would also like some RBG action, never got to try taht yet because of my rock solid PvE guild

  52. Crosshair says:

Welcome to the site and I look forward to your contributions!

  53. Sspectre says:

Hey welcome I’m pumped to see more PvP stuff showing up,
I watched one of your videos and was very curious about the addons you had? That alone would make my 2v2′s improve! :)

  54. Creepnfreak says:

Welcome, how do you deal with pillar humpers and how much spell pen. should a hunter have?
    Thanks,

    Welcome Tapington!
I have been dying for PVP help!
Aside from Talent and Glyph guide I would absolutely love different strategies. Like in arenas or battlegrounds what roles are hunters best at playing and stuff like that

  57. Robingyou says:

Welcome to WHU Tapington been looking forward to a PVP writer for long time as info is scarce and out dated on hunter PVP, 1 thing i am looking for beside the obviouse of guides, glyphs and tactics is add-ons u use or recomend tyvm for your time and look forward to reading your post in the near future

  58. Syrcanus says:

Welcome to WHU. Glad that some PVP info will start flowing around here. Mostly what I’d be interested in seeing:

-Talents specs for pvp (including pet specs)
    -Gearing for pvp
-Tips on how to fight classes
    -BG strategies

  59. lionelthehun says:

Welcome to whu. a suggestion i think you should tell frost is to create another webpage for pvp stuff and make the current one for pve to help the players find the right info.

  60. Kwarthil says:

Welcome, now maybe I can find some tricks to accually make we want to get some of those PVP achivments outta the way and make it fun.

  61. imition says:

Please tell me how you and your warrior partner are playing. What tacs you use etc. Would be nice :)

  62. Bahzob says:

Welcome aboard.. Just started playing arena this season and (2v2 with ret), winning more matches than losing and just got 1550, though its tough at times… It seems like you have enough ideas so won’t add any more other than to say please focus on arena rather than BGs.

    • Bumpster says:

I second that. If you can excell in arena, then BG’s are a breeze.

  63. Echo says:

    Welcome Tapington,

Good to see we’ve got a writer on board who’s got an idea about the other sphere of play. What I’d personally prefer to see is tips on Arena Comps in terms of what is popular – what are the counter comps and some general rules to bear in mind.

Personally I don’t think a gear/spec guide is that urgent as I found a fair amount of info on Arena Junkies however I get that a lot of people are going to want to see that sort of thing here.

Also I’ve got a little spreadsheet I made myself to optimise my hitrating in my pvp gear(allows for the various enchants gems and reforging) if you’d care to take a look. Contact info in my profile

  64. Ratree says:

Great that you are doing this (many thanks!). Just wanted to add my voice to those looking for arena strategy guides (2′s, 3′s and 5′s).

  65. hillbillyhatfield says:

Welcome to the best hunter site on the web.

I’m looking at you armory, and I hope that isn’t your main. Becasue your a BG baby. We are gods in BG. Your arena is pitiful, and the place we hunters need help and a voice in. Because we are being left behind to the point of being nonexistant.

Now on to the happier side. I look forward to your basic guides, for us who are just starting out in pvp. A good enchant/gem, and gear guide is a must. As well as a good trinket guide(most hunters I have seen in pvp have no idea what to use). And please make a pet guide so the players can choose the pet best suited there play style, and quit the “which pet is best”question. Also a good pvp pet spec guide would be great. Actually any pvp guides are welcome.

Lastly. We are dwarfs. Either reroll or race transfer. Dang blasted smelly ugly undead…..

    • Pepprdgefarm says:

I agree that his armory profile for this toon is not overly impressive, however, it makes me wonder what your armory looks like. If you are pro at pvp as you imply, perhaps you should contribute to WHU as a writer as opposed to just a member. In addition, Tapington has pointed out that this hunter is just one of a handful of toons he has that have achieved 2k+ rating in 2s/3s. I am guessing that his strength is not only in his communication skills but overall pvp knowledge.

    • Pepprdgefarm says:

I just looked up your profile (Rodneyh on Ghostlands server)… even less impressive at pvp than the way you speak about it. Perhaps some respect for Tapington and a little less condescension is in order? 2s is notoriously difficult for hunters. That Tapington is capable of pulling 2k+ for 2s as a hunter is impressive. Some of the best hunters in the world refuse to play 2s, because they find it so difficult.

      • Tapington says:

I may as well give a short explanation(excuses) as to why I haven’t yet hit 2.4k or higher etc. on my hunter. Playing on Saurfang, I’ve never played a proper comp. I’ve never run beastcleave, TSG, or any sort of formal hunter composition that is known to work well. I play with what I have available to me, and that is the classes my friends play. I don’t play with the best players in the world, I play with friends. If I wanted to take the game more seriously, I wouldn’t play sub-optimal comps and, would transfer to a more populated server, like Tichondrius. This is worsened by the fact that I am Australian and play at a constant 300ms or higher.

The comps on BG6 are not very varied, and run comps that counter the comp that I play. As for ratings, since BG6 is low pop, you get less ratings for a win, and lose more for a loss. The ratings inflation on BG9/Bloodlust means that our 2200 on Saurfang is more like 2500 on BG9. But long story short, My hunter is not my main, and never has been. I don’t enjoy this class as much as I enjoy playing a Rogue. Basically I’m a mediocre hunter at best, but I’ve studied strategies and tactics as is my norm to share them with the readers on WHU. This is done in my own free time, and while I appreciate constructive criticism, trolling and pointless insults I do not care for.

  66. tessalynn says:

    welcome tapington :)

i’d definitely like to see what you consider the best specs, gear, enchants, etc. for pvp’ing. for the most part i know bgs, and i have done VERY little arena. like, minuscule. practically none at all. so i’d love to hear everything and anything you’ve got to say about arenas! :D

i for one am thrilled! i’ve been hoping for some pvp info here for awhile!

  67. Rhinochaser says:

Big welcome. I actually havea DK on your server if its the Oceanic Saurfang server?

I PVP a bit and I have trouble with PVP geared ARMS Warriors. Hard to kite before they just burst me down. Any thoughts on this particular class? thanks

  68. clouzot says:

    Start from the basic:
    1) Specs/talents: What spec works best against what combo
    2) Gear/gem/Enchant/glyphs
    3) Pet and pet talents: a pet for each occasion :)
    4) one on one strats: know your oponent, his limitations and his strength

That should keep you busy for a while :)

  69. Gorac says:

Could you maybe make a small guide on your current 3s team? I’ve been wanting to try it out for a while but I’m not sure what healer to use.

    • Tapington says:

Currently the best comp for a hunter, and most overpowered comp out of all at the moment is KFC(Kung Fu Cleave). Grab an Arms warrior and a Resto Shaman(Has to be shaman, all the other healers don’t go very well in KFC) and spec MM and just start queuing up. The basic gist of the comp is to CC heavy on the healer and nuke the squishiest target. The most important thing is to get your team on Skype, or another voice program, though I highly recommend Skype because of the almost 0ms chat, and start communicating. I’ll go into depth further with 3v3′s comps later in a guide, but the best advice I could give on this comp is work out a CC chain, we personally use Scatter->Trap->Fear->Mindcontrol->Throwdown->Repeat. Good luck.

      • Aldax says:

I have been looking for a short paragraph, as short as consise as this, for ages. Very usefull! you ar making a huge difference already, Tap.
        /clap clap clap

      • Gorac says:

Would a disc priest be ok? I know a resto shaman would probably be better but I don’t know any good resto shamans on my server.

      • Tapington says:

You could still run the comp with a disc priest to decent ratings, but it’ll be much harder. The warrior’s fear and Priest’s fear share a DR, and make it abit harder to score kills. The Priest’s healing output is also a lot lower than a shaman’s. But the comp is still viable. I unfortunately don’t have any resto shamans on my server either, so I’m running it as Heroic KFC (Arms/MM/Disc)

  70. KroenenHunter says:

Tapington has helped me out A LOT with PvP, in duels, arena and pretty much all forms of PvP. I just wanna thank him again and congratulate him.
