The weirdest thing happened to me yesterday on WoW.

So there I was doing my final few Puppyman dailies after switching to them after the green protodrake.  I’d just gotten done pugging my way through ICC25 up to Rotface, when I got the strangest tell.

I pug an ICC25 raid, and we do the first four (lower spire) bosses. Two great pieces of hunter gear dropped (Zod’s and a Deathbringer’s Will) that are awesome, but I lost the rolls on.

Well, no harm in that. I expect it in pugs. I was just kinda let down, cuz only 1 other hunter rolled on the bow (we were the only 2 hunters) and then like 9 people rolled on the trink, cuz its a straight dps trink. It was just weird to see both pieces of loot I want to drop ya know?

So like 10 minutes after raid breaks up, I’m out in Sholzar doing my dailies, and this person sends me a tel from the raid.

Person: “Hey, what did you roll for DBW?”

Arust: “I don’t remember. Pretty low.”

Person: “Well I won it, and if you want it you can have it. You had the highest DPS there.”

Arust: “Nah, that’s ok man. You won the roll, its your loot.”

Person: “Is that your main?”

Arust: “Yes.”

Person: “Well this is my fourth alt, and you’ll use it more. And I’m female :X”

I didn’t get the :x face, but.

Person: “Meet me in Dal?”

Arust: “Sure, if you really want. You don’t have to. This is really a first.”

So then we meet in Dal, and she trades it to me. Like some Goddess of Pug Loot or a Good DPS Faerie. It was totally weird. I’m not saying I’m entitled to that loot, certainly I’m not. I mean, I haven’t raided 25 man hardly at all, but I have paid an ass load of dues in 10 man, I shudder to think how much repair bill I’ve paid in there. Others in MNK have undoubtedly paid more (FD FTW), but that aside. It was totally weird to be noticed for doing the most DPS, and then get a trinket out of it, and more so I was doing the most while using [Thori'dal, The Stars' Fury] or whatever the Orange bow is. I wondered why my repair bill was only 8.8g per death, and not the customary 10+

Totally weird.

And if you see a Paladin named Breakdown, give her a /kiss for me.

    Gratz on DBW!

I’m glad this Paladin stopped and considered you, it’s always a sign of a good player. Thinking of other before themselves.

  2. Bloodshine says:

    *others. Whoopsies. :D

  3. Barker says:

I’m sorry… all I got out of that was a Paladin rolled on DBW.

  4. DarkDragoon says:

its really nice to see there are some players out there that arent addicted to purples and actually give away or pass on loot when others deserve it more/benefit from it more. grats on your trinket arust!

  5. Omogon of Lethon says:

    excellent :)

  6. rev says:

All I really see is that you were in a pug that allowed ret paladins to roll for DBW and then ended up at 6/12 with 30% buff. You better reconsider which pugs you join ;) . But grats on the trinket , yea.

  7. Goodgracious says:

There are some decent people out there. And good for you that you met her. :D

  8. Férn says:

How lovely. People like this make up for the total ass hats that are out there.. :)

  9. Dehvi says:

That’s awesome Arust… Gratz! Maybe, I’ll get that lucky someday. I’ve paid my dues 10x over in 25 ICC, but I’m still one of the unlucky few who have never even seen DBW drop. :(

  10. Dan says:

Lucky bastard! :) My guild uses EPGP, that trink has dropped 3 times and I’ve been “this close” each time. Hope it drops again on Tuesday!

  11. Jen says:

Fwiw, :X is the heart smiley on Yahoo Messenger. Maybe that’s what she meant.
(And grats on meeting a nice player!)

  12. Mirlorien says:

Arust – Grats! People like that make the game so much more enjoyable. I hope I can follow her example.

To the ret pally naysayers – DBW is, hands down, the best DPS-boosting trink I’ve ever seen in-game. Granted, I’m saying this as a hunter, but I can think of all kinds of places this trink will fit. It procs all the time, and an extra 600 agi, 600 crit, or 1200 AP are nothing to sniff at. Even ignoring the armor pen bonus, the boost is huge. Before I earned it, I certainly didn’t mind losing on it to other high-damage classes. What helps one, helps the guild!

Btw – jump-shot kiting Blistering Zombies, as a Taunka – funniest thing ever!

  13. Hrist says:

    Three things:

    1) Obviously, grats! More cows in MNK is a good thing!

    2) I find it odd she felt the need to throw into the whole thing that she was female. This boggles me.

    3) You did the most DPS in a PUG while forgetting that you had your artifact bow equipped?! That is both hilarious and really sad at the same time.

    Anyway, grats again! SLP REPRESENT!

  14. Grats! It is a very fun trinket and I am glad that you got it.

I got my DBW when I was filling in a 25 when a DPS left. It was a mostly guild run with a guild that my much smaller guild runs with. I go in we get him in two tries and the trinket drops. I rolled a 95 and about crap my pants with excitement. I felt a tiny bit bad that I won it with out having been there for the whole raid but my trinkets at the time were all 200 ilevel so it was a massive upgrade for me.

  15. Wolf says:

grats i got that trinket and loving it

  16. Arust alive says:

So did anyone just assume this was a post by Frost and get really confused as to why he wanted a bow and a second DBW so much…lol.

Wondederd what happend to you…this place has gotten out of control with dwarf bravado. It’s been sorely lacking your short jokes and what not to put them in their place. I can’t belive more of their pets haven’t eaten them for snacks.

Yeah that hurts when both the things you want drop and you lose both. I had been real lucky on Saurfang getting DBW on first drop and winning 4-6 roll for marks but Lady D hates me it took me forver to get Zod’s adn I am still trying to get Leggings of Northern Lights.

  17. Bloodbàne says:

I actually did something similar. I was in an ICC 25 on my DK (3rd lvl 80 toon), mostly just for fun since I really didn’t belong in there with my DPS gear. Tank gear is ok but my dps gear was lacking. Anywho, I was as a back up tank but mostly dps. Well, I won the Bryntroll, the Bone Arbiter so that was sweet. Got up to Saurfang, one shot, DBW drops and whadda know, roll 100. So I take it but even in doing so, I felt bad because A) I didn’t really deserve it and B) I was on an alt…an alt that I don’t even really raid on. Anyway, a rogue whispered and offered to buy it but didn’t have the gold but “promised to pay 10k” or whatever. It was his main and he was trying to get into a progression guild and all that. So I gave it to him for the 2500 gp that he had on him.

It does get better. The kid actually mailed me gold and/or gems or primordial saronite for a couple of weeks and actually gave me the 10K he originally promised.

As a follow up, I have only seen it drop once on my hunter :) and no, I didn’t win it.

  18. the Cheerleader says:

Grats Arust!! :D I think it falls under .. what goes around comes around! You are always very respectful of others who you play with, and i think the gods saw that and smiled:D

    Great article:D wooo!

  19. kracken says:

I would love to know what the puppyman dailies are and what your goal is behind doing them? Is there another rare mount to be had like the green proto Drake from the oracles? And grats on the trinkets, that doesn’t happen much.

  20. Omogon of Lethon says:

ya…what ARE the puppyman dailies ?

  21. Anansi says:

I got my DBW via somewhat similar circumstances. The guy who won it was MS Prot tank and had joined the guild I was in at the time as a tank. After the raid I said you know that’s DPS trinket right, and you’re a tank? He admitted he didn’t realize it was a DPS trinket and gave it to me (I was the second highest roll on it). Glad to have it now, though I felt dirty at the time. But that guild turned into a complete disaster and I left and they’ve since fallen apart so it’s all good.

Second act of Karma in WoW – Was in a 25 VoA pug with my Resto Shaman, we kill Toravon and all the loot pops up for Need/Greed/DE and there were my 264 Shaman healing pants. But I immediately Passed as I assumed this was in error and loot would be distributed as per normal. I was wrong. Thankfully, another Shaman in the group was smarter than I was and actually got the healing pants and gave them to me. He said he noticed I’d passed and thought I should have them. Very kind of him.

I think these two incidents are the reason why I cannot win a loot roll to save my life now.

  22. Jindrax says:

I would love to see such a reward system, would make people to try to do their rolls better… Also gratz!

  23. Littlebottom says:

That’s awesome. It really is nice (but rare) to come across a player that recognizes that another player would benefit more from a piece of loot and gives it up. DBW dropped in the pug I did on my warrior last week and ended up going to a hunter that was doing 4.5k dps overall. (they should not have been in the raid) I offered them the 5k gold I had on me and 3 primordial saronite but it was a no go. Sadface. Madface.

  24. Mirlorien says:

    Puppyman = Frenzyheart

  25. Aldax says:

And now a sad story about Pugs and ICC25.
Yesterday I was on a PUG at ICC25. We rolled for Protector’s Mark of Santification. I rolled 98 and won.
The loot got distributed. The raid leader makes a mistake and gives the mark to some guy (Maligoth, from Thunderhorn EU). He realizes that he made a mistake and asked Maligoth to to give me the item. Maligoth wispered me “give me gold”.
Imagine the rest of the story. And I never got the item I won with a roll of 98.
It is refreshing to hear there is nice people thou. /love to Breakdown.

  26. Kotar says:

CG on getting your well deserved gear Hrist. Yay for your skill overriding random rolls.

Now I’m sorry but I have to agree with Barker and Rev on the comments that a Ret pally would roll on that trinket or be allowed to. For raiders and RL’s in the know, this wouldn’t of occured. Because quite simply DBW is better served equipped by pretty much any other phys. DPS class than a Ret pally.

Not insulting Ret pallys on their skills, abilities, and dps, I’ve got one. This is just a fact. That trinket is simply just not ranked very high in their top BiS list. It is there and an option for those who aren’t working on heroic modes but there are better options.

She either realized, (or was told), that she could buy the frost badge trinket or get the whispering fang skull from 10 ICC and it would improve her performance better than the DBW which had her make the decision to give it to you later. Awesome move on her part either way. Love her guide name btw. lol

Remember it’s not being an elitist in knowing what’s best for your class as well as the competition’s BiS. Cause in today’s mad purple, gearscore watching, pug WoW world you have to try to watch out where gear goes when it drops.

  27. Urukhu says:

@Aldax – I’d be willing to bet that if you, the RL and perhaps one or two other people in the raid submitted GM tickets explaining the situation, that they’d find a way to award it to you.

  28. Macdougall says:

A short story about the drama that can surround this most desirable of trinkets. My wife was in an ICC 25 PUG on her hunter. The loot rules, announced over ventrilo, say that you can only roll main spec if that was your role during that particular fight. People roll and my wife has the 2nd highest roll, right behind a TANK. The lootmaster is tired and mistakenly loots it to the tank. The tank refuses to turn it over. Drama ensues and the raid ends up falling apart because of it. The majority of the raid is behind my wife, saying that the loot rules were main spec for your role for that boss. My wife submits a GM ticket and is told that if the loot rules were posted in raid chat, and not over vent, then they could have done something about it, but since they weren’t, their hands are tied. The only way she could have gotten it is if the tank had submitted a ticket. (He was later g-kicked from his respected progression raiding guild over the situation, lol.)

Two weeks later we are in a PUG, I won the roll and sold it to her for 2k gold and “unspecified future considerations”. :) Honestly, I figured she got cheated out of it, she deserved it. A couple weeks later I got both the legs and the bow off of Deathwhisper25. Karma is a good thing.

Moral of the story….insist that the loot rules get posted in raid chat so mis-lootings can be corrected by a GM. If there is no evidence in game, there is nothing they can do to help.

  29. Ardnas says:

@Hrist, I wondered why she mentioned she was female too. Then I re-read the post….

Arust: “Nah, that’s ok man. You won the roll, its your loot.”

  30. Calsh says:

Grats Arust, and glad to see you posting again! Pretty impressive that you topped the charts with a BC legendary bow too.

  31. Elenya says:

    Grats Arust :)

  32. Fradin says:

Grats Arust on the trinket , i play on 2 different servers and its funny one server drops the trinket and bow all the time the other i hardly even see them. I personally try and do the best for the guild just the other day hersir’s great spear dropped even tho its a upgrade from the battered hilt im using i ldidnt roll on it to let the other hunter get it due to the fact she was using a polearm from HOR and was a much bigger upgrade for her. Personally raiding is a team effort and whats better for the team should always come first in my opinion.

  33. Dharion says:

Wow, on Silver Hand the person would have just laughed as they disenchanted the trinket…..

  34. Nite says:

Well done, nice to see karma in action on occasion (although I’m tempted to say you’ve had more than your share already, given that Legendary Bow you have). My guild is solely focused on 10s, so I pug 25s, and I’ve seen DBW drop at least 5 times (probably a few more), including 3 weeks in a row once. Lost every single time, of course. Same for the Marks of Sanctification. It’s so dispiriting, particularly when often the ones who win it seem so poorly geared and perform so badly that they’re either alts or clueless. Anyway, here’s hoping that Breakdown gets some major good karma of her own to enjoy! :D

  35. FeralGilneas says:

    @Jen

I think I can explain the face she made and what confused Arust. My guess is she made it in reference to being called “man”. ;)

  36. Massai says:

what is the ranged dps on thoridal?

  37. Hosp says:

    Somebody gave a pally a DBW? …..yikes….

  38. Yorigrim says:

    OMG ARUST POSTED SOMETHING…oh and hai2u :D

  39. ki says:

    good post, great stuff

  40. Hulder says:

Congrats, Arust, on DBW and on meeting a human being – it kind of restores my faith in humanity when these things happen!

As for the “And I’m female” + emote: some women object to being addressed as “man”. I don’t, but I know quite a few that do. So maybe she felt she had to correct that. No biggie, in my opinion :-)

  41. Duckaholic says:

Wow Frost, you’re not a dps whore, you’re a dps pimp! But remember, this is the internet so that “female” might have more than just a trinket for you.

  42. Mirlorien says:

To anyone holding the opinions “They performed poorly, so they don’t deserve it. They are poorly geared, so they don’t deserve it”:

You have learned absolutely nothing from Arust’s post. Arust has shown us a very cool and very rare example of something the WoW community desperately needs – just a little human kindness. Instead, you’ve turned it into a forum to complain about how you were wronged by someone not as “leet” as you. Don’t you even realize that such behavior opposes what Arust might be trying to show here? So you lost a die roll. Get beyond it. And please stop assuming that gear score is more important than the people who helped you experience the game.

Thank you, Arust and Breakdown, for showing us this example. It’s a great one to follow.

I apologize to anyone who found my comments offensive. But they needed to be said.

  43. Chimy says:

I’m surprised noone answered the haterade.

She felt the need to say she’s female because DBW turns all toons, regardless of their original gender into male northrend characters (iron dwarves, etc). Now, I’m not saying I support the idea of aesthetic at the cost of dps (hell, I’d run around northrend wearing nothing but precious’ ribbon if it upped my dps) but a lot of people hate the trinket for that reason in much the same way as healers hate to be assumed to be a ‘She’.

  44. Mirlorien says:

@Chimy – Wow, I never realized there was no female counterpart to the DBW animations. I simply assumed there was. It’s a bummer if anyone wants their toon to remain female. Thanks for the info. And I agree with you on aesthetics vs. dps – Mir would be running around in a White Wedding Dress if it improved his damage output.

  45. Dhorvin says:

Wow. Pages of comments and not one of them critical? Just everyone patting each other on the back about what a great thing this was. I’d like to know what you guys all smoking, because I want some.

This was immoral. An injustice was done to every poor dps who rolled on this item in good faith and outrolled Arust but lost it to that pally. Arust didn’t deserve this loot. If the person who won the roll decided that they didn’t want it, it’s not their right to just bestow it upon whom they see fit– it should got to the next-highest roller. Now, granted, the chief person at fault was the Pally, but when the item was accepted then Arust gave tacit endorsement to the idea that it’s OK to roll on something, win it, and then just re-gift it to whomever you please. (It was also, to a lesser extend, tacit endorsement of the idea that better performance entitles you to better loot.) You are cheating the loot system when something like this happens, and it is immoral, and unjust. The proper response would have been to let the pally know that you don’t deserve the trinket, and that, if they really don’t want it, then they should do their best to find out who rolled second-highest and give it to that person, and should furthermore take more care in the future before rolling on something that they don’t intend to keep.

This is just as bad as rolling on loot, winning it, and selling it to someone else, but I see several other accounts in this same comment thread from people who did just that and don’t see anything wrong with it. In fact, most of you are mentioning behind-the-scenes loot re-distrubution and karma in the same breath as if you expect to be rewarded for cheating. How this entire thread doesn’t explode from the sheer force of hypocrisy on display eludes me. You should all be ashamed.

Ask yourself this: if you rolled second-highest on DBW, but lost it to someone else, and then later found out that that person didn’t keep it AND that it went to someone else besides you, how would you feel?

    Cheating is wrong, period.

  46. Dharion says:

@Dhorvin, how did Arust NOT deserve the loot? It was the paladin’s trinket, to do with as she saw fit, and she saw fit to give it to the person SHE thought earned it.

And as for the ” rolling on loot, winning it, and selling it to someone else”, that happens all time on Silver Hand…… you learn to deal with it and know who not to pug with in the future.

  47. famousz says:

@ whoever said “2) I find it odd she felt the need to throw into the whole thing that she was female. This boggles me.”
-it was because he called me male and i was just correcting that.

    @ Dhorvin Honestly.
-Your right. I did ask around in the raid for whoever was the second highest roller. I honestly did and all i got were responses from everyone except arust “you should just give it to me”. Honestly i feel no need at all for people to get dbw who cant pull more then 4k dps with BETTER gear then my paladin has(and for the gearscore whores i have a 5500 something gs on my pally). I rolled with the intent of keeping it but honestly it wasnt a big DPS booster for me considering im not good on other stats yet.

Arust performed and rolled on the trinket. So is it so immoral i keep it on a 4th alt ret pally that i RARELY play over someones main? I dont think it is.

and the :X face is just a habit it really means nothing felt id clear all of those up.

and yes Breakdown = Me. I dont regret giving it to him at the least bit. He performed he didnt stand in fire and he didnt win anything that i can recall.

So congrats and i hope the trinket is working wonders for you.

  48. famousz says:

Oh and one more thing to add to whoever mentioned something about ret pallys not being able to roll on dbw or something. i agree ret pallys shouldnt be able to roll on them over classes who it would benefit more.

But i felt the need to roll on it that day and i so happen to have won it but over the 4k warriors the 6k dps ret pally with 4 set. and i was out dpsing a pally with the 4set which is /cry. but i was right on par in the top 5 dps on saurfang and thats def not a ret pally fight imo. well for the unretarded ones who listen when theyre told not to aoe when beast come out.

  49. Kotar says:

AHHH!! If only Blizzard would program the “random” dice rolls to take into account your performance from the last fight loot issues wouldn’t be so much of a problem. However boss fight and class mechanics in addition to roles assigned would make it a nightmare and pretty much impossible to do. Especially for hunters on the Saurfang fight having to trap, distracting shot, jump-disengage, and maybe kite the adds every 40 seconds. So we have to make these decisions for ourselves.

    Three things.

    1. There has been many kudos to you for passing the loot to another class. Enjoy that. Yes you’ll have to take some of the comments with a grain of salt but not everyone will agree with everyone all of the time. That’s just the way it is. You did do a good thing after the raid and people acknowledge it. It’s just that the raid loot story leading up to you talking to Arust rings far too familiar and true to some people. And their story didn’t have such a happy ending.

    2. I’m not going to say that Saurfang is definitively a Ret pally fight. However that class/spec has been documented as being up there on top DPS and DD on Saurfang. You stand still, you attack, you ignore adds, watch threat if the tank isn’t doing his job to the fullest. Easysauce. Will the quick add switching mage and warlock as well as the rogue, warrior, and kitty druid beat you in overall DD and DPS at times? Sure, but your up there and have no other job besides KILL BOSS. So expect arguments on your stand that Saurfang isn’t a Ret pally fight. Just a warning.

    3. It’s a hard call on your rolling to keep the trinket out of the fail melee’s hands. Yes gear should go towards people who worked for it. WORKED, not just participated in the fight halfheartedly and just happened to be there when it dropped. WORKED! On the other hand, even though you say you did better than them you still rolled against classes who did participate and DBW does work better for. It’s damned if you do, damned if you don’t girl.
Most people just don’t like classes rolling on loot that “isn’t theirs”. I agree to a point, but it bothers me more when people roll on and win loot that they don’t deserve. Low performance, low damage, dying and screwing up does not equal getting stuff just because there were there. They got carried for the gold and emblems of frost, they should be happy with that cause it’s more than they deserve.

  50. Autumn says:

Thats very nice of the pally (who shouldn’t have rolled on it in the first place).

I’m also in the habit of rolling for stuff first and giving them out if I change my mind later. IIRC I’ve given away distant land twice, a pair of pants and some axe once. It eats up my MS roll, but hey, I just made someone’s day.

  51. Ronberuk says:

She is really sweet to have given you the bow. We should salute her whenever we happen to bump into her.
    What is her hunter’s name?

  52. Grovin of Dark Hour says:

Yeah, I’m 2 weeks late. Oh well.

I’m guessing she pointed out that she’s female because you had just said “Nah, that’s ok MAN”

  53. It’s good that people can take the mortgage loans and that opens completely new opportunities.
