Today over at wow.com, a deeper look at the SV pve rotation:
Last week, we covered what the new PvE rotation is looking like for MM hunters in Cataclysm, and today we’re going to move along to the SV PvE rotation. Currently in Wrath, the MM rotation is more fixed and requires some careful forethought and planning. In Cataclysm, it is more so. In Wrath, the SV rotation is more reactionary, and in Cataclysm, it is that and more so.
Despite the frantic gyrations from being focus-starved to actually having too much focus, the SV rotation is probably the least-changed hunter spec rotation in Cataclysm. We use Cobra Shot instead of Steady Shot, we don’t have to worry about reapplying Serpent Sting and instead we get to actually use Arcane Shot from time to time. Join me after the cut and we’ll take a look… Read More.
Hey Frost I didn’t see any mention of using the trap launcher to get LnL to proc. If I remember Balck Arrow chances of proccing LnL is on the low side but traps are 100% in live. If this is the case would you want to toss a trap in there when it’s off CD?
Now that I think of it wouldn’t you want to start every fight in each spec by throwing a trap or for the other specs is the trap launcher and/or trap cost make it cost prohibitive??

L&L is currently 2 ranks, top rank being a 66% chance to proc, vs 100% on live.
In regard to the L&L procs and weaving something in between the Explosive arrow shots. Explosive shots are dots. I thought that in Cata dots were set up so that if you reapplied the dot it didn’t right over the final tick but just extended the length of the dot. This is the major reason why you currently wait between the explosive shots when L&L procs. Its so that you don’t overwrite the final dot and loose the dps. But with the way Cata dot mechanics work wouldn’t you just want to fire the Explosive Shots one right after the other and then continue along with your rotation as normal? Which if Black Arrow is still up be three Explosive Shots all in succession with a Kill Command thrown in there possibly to burn the extra focus.
If the above is true, then surely haste will effect the spell and we could even end up with a 4th tic. This would just become so OP as with a 4th tic and no clipping, you could infact keep ES continually ticking without ever falling off (24sec internal CD on BA), you would need some dam lucky procs
OT: I discovered yesterday that I had a Beta invite. I was able to explore a little and decided to quest in Hyjal and was able to finish 1/2 a level. It looked like the random dungeon finder is disabled. So I think I will wait till the weekend to try to round up a group for a 5 man. I would be interested in an article about Grim Batol or other 5 mans.
Still you think it might worth it…throw in immolation trap or even better a explosive trap when there are multiple mobs and get a 66% chance of LnL proccing right off the bat. If it doesnt you still get the damage from the trap. I’m no expert on SV or focus regen but that might even be a nice way to build a good amount of focus in the beginning.
Excited about the new serpent spread – targets hit by your multi-shot are also afflicted by your Serpent sting equal to 50% of its total duration.
Big fan of surv, big fan of what Im reading here. Cant wait.
Having read through the rotation and effects as you’ve all thoroughly written them up I’m missing something….why the need to bleed excess focus?
One would think a surplus to be a good thing..d’you have a minute to run that down for me?
