Cataclysm Beta Tracking

A couple of very nice quality of life improvements I’ve noticed in the beta involve hunter tracking and mail.

On the tracking end, it looks like we hunters can finally track as many things at a time as we want to. The tracking dropdown now has checkboxes for everything, and you can check as many of them at a time as you want.

This is fully awesomesauce. It’s particularly nice for hunters with a gathering profession — no longer will you have to track either your gathering item or something useful. Track everything you want, and nothing you don’t want. Excellent improvement.

Dont want to bust your bubble, but the mail icon will do now on the live servers. Like the tracking change though.

  2. Iceveiled

^ beat me to it, but yes. Multiple tracking = epic win.

  3. Luna

There’s a few new things on that tracking list, isn’t there? I don’t recall seeing Stable Masters or Auctioneers before. That is pretty slick.

The new tracking looks awesome! I can’t wait for that, though I wonder how that will work with the Improved Tracking talent?

As for the unread mail thing, that’s currently in the game, but it doesn’t always work as expected – usually it will show the names, but sometimes it will still default to just saying you have “Unread mail”.

Stable Masters and Auctioneers have been there a while.

Here’s my question: Is it the same yellow dot for everything?

    @Littlebear:
Frost’s screenshot holds the answer to your question… at least the innkeeper and repair have function appropriate icons on the mini-map. I can’t tell about the rest, but do see a blue dot on there.

  7. Bier

@Silvermane – I understand about the different icons for in-town stuff, but I have the same kind of question as Littlebear about once you’re out and about.

Say I have on minerals for mining, beasts because I am trying to kill x of whatever for a quest, and humanoids since I live on a PvP server and want to see enemies before they see me. Are we still going to just see a whole lot of yellow and red dots like before (with the minor change of a white ring around players vs. the yellow ring) or is this going to be improved/modified somehow?

Just curious more than anything else.

  8. Turadran

Does this affect the SV talent that increases damage on what you’re tracking?

  9. Faradriel

This is going to be great for PvP! Now we can track humanoids, beasts, and hidden at the same time!

All I can say is, it’s about time. This is the most no-brainer lore-centric ability that should have been in the hunter’s toolbox from the beginning.

  11. Thar

Farmers rejoice! Tracking herbs AND ore for the win!

  12. Longjonsilvr

    Still no /cry

  13. Longjonsilvr

    Track Mechanical

  14. Noiros

@Thar – First thing I thought about too. If this works with herbalism and mining it’s going to be awesome for farming. I wouldn’t pick those two professions on my main that I raid with due to the poor bonuses, but from a farming perspective you’ll have a major advantage.

Are you sure this is a hunter only thing Frostheim?

I’m sure it’s not hunter only — it’s just by leaps and bounds best for us since we can actually track so many things.

  16. ShroudViper

@ Faradriel – Don’t forget Elementals. Druid’s tree form is an elemental form.

in regards to the multiple tracking feature discussed…….I will say that is VERY refreshing news….

I should run this by you guys…

I always wanted to see an arrow that kind of hovered over your characters head. you could not interact with the actual arrow or “heavily” adjust its settings. anyways it would slowly become visible as you came close to what ever you chose it to represent. it could be put in place for all types of tracking that had to do with fun things to seek out…..mineral nodes…humanoids……stealth units……l. the goal being make the tracking skill
something enticing!!!! proactively seek out the things you wanna look for… not a handicapped advantage….it would of course follow the same rules as the existing mini map….but it would be more fun ….more exciting……think about games where your character has night vision….its more awesome then cranking the brightness on your monitor…

I always felt that picking up on that visual cue would be more fun than …watching your mini map for the dots to appear….:P

it would be a visual cue that indicated “the thing your character is keeping an eye out for is being picked up on BY your character” and through this visual cue would be understood by you. This idea, in my opinion would be light years beyond staring at the mini map for dots….:( hell maybe this type of thing exists already…. but I would have to be finely tuned so that it was not just a complete givaway to the player where to find nodes, or other faction members…hell maybe the mod has been created?? anybody ever seen anything like it?

i just think it would be much more interactive than that blob of a mini map…yuck….ive stared at that thing for a long time :) )

I did get a mod that allowed me to place the mini map under my characters feet….thats about as close as I came to this idea I wished they had put in the game :)

It needs a “Clear All” button at the minimum, or the ability to create tracking sets.

  19. Xylakane

This is awesome. :) I never took mining or herbs because I could not track both. All my hunters took skinning. I could track beasts and skin. :) Good News Everyone :)

  20. Minøtåur "Bura"

    Still waiting for Track Mechanical…

  21. Confused

I must be missing something…I can’t find anything in this post about mail – nothing about armor or the stuff that in the mailbox????

  22. Croy

Freakin’ awesome! Finally becomes real… Dreamt this for ages.

What an awesome change. Isn’t it always the simple things that make the biggest difference.

  24. Dharion

Have to admit, this is 16000 kinds of win.

  25. Stormfront

Frost, I’ve been wondering exactly how the new areas are being handled…
Obviously changed zones like Barrens will be accesable to everyone, even if they dont buy the expansion, but i’m wondering about zones like Hyjal and Twilight Highlands, the cata-specific 80 areas. With flying mounts in the old world im wondering how these are implemented. Are they just there and theoretically anyone can get access to them, or are these areas instanced off like outland, northrend, or azuremyst isle, accesable only to those accounts that have purchased the expansion?

  26. Hulder

Awesome! How I would have like this when I was levelling my Hunter, who has Herbalism as a profession :-)

    @Turadran

The tooltip for improved tracking is poorly worded, the talent actually does the extra damage to any of the trackable enemies as long as you are tracking any one of them, ie if you are tracking humanoids you still deal improved damage to undead. So to answer your question, i would imagine tracking multiple enemy types at once would not affect the talent, as you would already be doing your improved damage to all of them anyway.

  28. Garam

This is awesome, but will you still get the stealth detection bonus from Track Hidden if you have them all up? Or are they getting rid of that entirely?

Finally! Now I can track fish and track beasts at the same time. Skinnin’ and Fishin’ FTW!

  30. Lohkie

I really want this now! I’m currently trolling stormpeaks in my off time trying to find the time-lost drake and would love to be able to track minerals to make some gold while I’m at it! No more spamming a macro to switch back and forth. This is pure win in my book

  31. Brezzlin

i see this as “improved Tracking” HEAVEN!!!! there goes my autotracker add-on. and he comes the hunter that tracks everything and gets a damage increase on all of it yes!!!!! thanks blizz. i can now cross that off my X-mass list.
