Level 30 Hunter Gear

Posted: by Frostheim

WHU hunter and dues payer Saelle has put together for us this list of optimal level 30 hunter gear. I trimmed things down a bit and did some tweaking with an aye to dps over mana preservation, but we still have a handful of options in most slots.

Note of course that this list does not include heirloom items, which most of the WHU baby hunters don’t have access to. Don’t forget that hit remains an important stat even at these low levels, especially because of the huge impact it has on your pet’s ability to hold aggro (since it gets expertise with your hit, it’s damage goes way up on anything it’s tanking when you’re hit capped).

Chest
Dusky Leather Armor – Easy choice at level 30 made by leatherworkers.  Until then use Tunic of Westfall from a quest line that starts with Bryan Stoutmantle in Westfall.

Head
Skirmisher’s Cover – Long level 30 quest line that starts with Inspecting the Ruins from Captain Vimes in Theramore.  You will need friends to complete this but this helm is worth it.
Craftsman’s Monocle – Only for engineers.

Cloaks
Tigerstrike Mantle – Best cloak available.  Limited availability.
Parachute Cloak – Great stats with a parachute as well.  Only for engineers.
Watch Master’s Cloak – Good cloak if you didn’t get one from your level 19 twinking.  Questline starts with Sven’s Revenge though be prepared to do a bit of running (be thankful for mounts at level 20).

Shoulders

Mantle of Thieves – BOE drop from Razorfen Kraul
Forest Tracker Epaulets – World BOE Drop
Swift Wind Spaulders – Level 30 quest reward that starts with the quest This Old Lighthouse in Theramore.
Wrist

Barbaric Bracers – Made by Leatherworkers.  Save your small lustrous pearls and large fangs.
Drakewing Bands – BOE for additional hit.

Hands
Toughened Leather Gloves – Leatherworking gloves.  Need 2 Spider Silk and 2 Elixir of Defense to create so it might be a bit tough to find the mats.  I wonder if the guild has any flower picking elf-wannabes?
Prospector Gloves – You need to find items just outside the Uldaman instance for a questline that starts with Ironband Wants you.  A bit tough for level 30s so make sure you bring along some friends.

Waist
Highlander’s Padded Girdle – PVP Trinket for 300 Honor, sold by Samuel Hawke at Refuge Point in Arathi Highlands.
Deviate Scale Belt – Made by Leatherworkers

Legs
Triprunner Dungerees – Reward from The Grand Betrayal in Gnomeregan.  Given by High Tinker Gelbin Mekkatorque.
Dusky Leather Leggins – Leatherworking Legs you can use until you get your Triprunner’s.

Feet
Highlander’s Mail Greaves – PVP Trinket for 300 Honor, sold by Samuel Hawke at Refuge Point in Arathi Highlands.

Finger
Ironspine’s Eye – Drops from Ironspine in the Scarlet Monastery Graveyard.
Protector’s Band – PVP ring at 100 honor.  Sold by Illiyana Moonblaze at the entrance to Warsong Gulch in Ashenvale.
Signet of Argas – Starts with a drop of Diabolical Plans from demons Southeast of Splintertree Post in Ashenvale.
Monkey Ring – Quest in Razorfen Kraul from Willix the Importer
Ring of Precision – Blackfathom deep drop you can find on the Auction house.

Neck
Sentinel’s Medallion – PVP neck at 100 honor.  Sold by Illiyana Moonblaze at the entrance to Warsong Gulch in Ashenvale.
Darkmoon Pendant – As the Darkmoon Faire just ended there might be a few of these on the AH.  While it is possible for a scribe to get mats before the next event I’m guessing this would be quite costly to make.  Not sure the difference between this and the Sentinel’s Medallion (+12 AP -2 Agility) is worth the gold/effort.
Amulet of Truesight – A good item if you have the gold since +hit items are hard to find at this level. The guild bank is stocking these in the level-capped tab.

Trinket

Rune of Duty – PVP Trinket for 300 Honor at the entrance to Warsong Gulch in Ashenvale.  It is sold by Illiyana Moonblaze.
Talisman of Arathor – PVP Trinket for 300 Honor, sold by Samuel Hawke at Refuge Point in Arathi Highlands.

One Hand Weapon (dual wield @ 20!!!)
Thornspike – Drops from the first boss in Razorfen Kraul (Aggem Thorncurse – 67% drop rate) and allegedly can be solo’ed at 30 if you are an elite skilled hunter. :P
Sentinel’s Blade – PVP weapon that costs 400 honor.  Sold by Illiyana Moonblaze at the entrance to Warsong Gulch in Ashenvale.
The Butcher – BOE that drops in the Scarlet Monastery.  Good if you are looking for more Stamina.

Two Hand Weapon
Armor Piercer – Dropped in Razonfen Kraul from Razorfen Spearhide (50% drop rate) who guard Overlord Ramstuk.
Haunting Blade – 2 Handed Sword that drops from Deathsworn Captain in Shadowfang Keep.

Ranged
Master Hunter’s Rifle – Quest reward from the godfather of all hunters (ok now it’s his son).  You are going to need lots of friends for this quest line.  Can start it at level 28.
Shrapnel Blaster – Quest line that starts with Sergeant Yohwa.  You will need friends for this.  Starts at level 30.
Glass Shooter – Drop from a Gnomeregan rare mob.
Ironweaver, Chesterfall Musket- BOE drops for those with the money.
Outrunner’s Bow -  PVP bow that costs 400 honor.  Sold by Illiyana Moonblaze at the entrance to Warsong Gulch in Ashenvale.

Hopefully I’ve limited the mistakes and I’m sure I’ve missed a few items but I think that is a good start to a BIS list.

My strategy is to level to 28 in the battlegrounds then pay the 10 gold to stop xp so I can farm instances for the other items.  Once I have everything I want I’m turning xp on then heading to the battlegrounds for 2 levels of serious hunter pwnage.

The BIS PVP items cost 1800 honor (waist, feet, neck, ring, one hand, trinkets) so make sure you get that before you hit level 30 as it will be almost impossible to get honor after that point.  I also am considering switching to engineering just for the parachute cloak.

thought the xp turn off was for bgs only not normal pve stuff

  2. Frostheim says:

When you turn off XP, it stops you from gaining xp by any means whatsoever.

  3. Coraspindle says:

I don’t know if the guild has any wanna-be flower-picking elves, but DHS has at least one highly skilled gnomish apothecary (*cough*me*cough*) and she can easily kick out elixirs of defense. If people want to contribute herbs to the cause, I will be happy to make as many as needed.

  4. Grundrong says:

Thanks for the list Frost! Flintlok has also done a BiS list on the Dead Hunter Society website:

  5. Valacia says:

Oh man, some of these would have been nice this weekend when I level my multi-boxing hunters from 24 – 38… but expensive.

  6. Good Gracious says:

I don’t have any herbies Cora, but I can provide the LW mats.

  7. Gzr says:

The Satchel of Helpful Goods obtained by selecting Random in the LFD tool also offer some nice Hunter blues.:

anyway awsome list! cant wait to get these things on farm with 5 man hunter groups :)

  9. Licos says:

Thanks for the list Saelle. I agree it can be fun to track down goodies like the ones listed. Are we really going to need them ? Truthfully I’m getting more enjoyment out lvling up and being a part of an amazing and helpful guild. It’s refreshing to see folks pull together and helping each other. Being surrounded by folks who respect and enjoy the hunter class instead of listening to players of lesser classes throw huntard comments around makes me want to log in more often :) good job guys !!

  10. the Cheerleader says:

Then we have succeeded!! Great job Whuvians!!

but yes.. keep those herbs coming since we need Jadefire Ink to make the lvl 30 scrolls of stamina/agility! :D

  11. Turadran says:

    Excellent, thanks for the list!

  12. Coraspindle says:

The elixirs are made from Wild Steelbloom and Stranglekelp; I have some in the bank and will cook up a few to toss in the guild vault for the leatherworkers.

  13. Algidus of WHU says:

I did the same exact thing as the writer (lvl to 28, then twink). Sadly I just leveled. I found that the two trinkets you listed had such a minimal effect, so I chose others. To start, the Insignia of the Alliance is very helpful for WSG, and as a hunter to macro it with disengage works well too. Also I liked my engineering trinkets as well. Gnomish and goblin are both fun. I Generally have 3 or 4 trinkets and just swap out if they are on cooldown. Also the Arena Grand Master is by far the best PvP trinket if you have the patience to get it.

If you are PvP or Solo twinking I prefer the Raptor Hunter Tunic, availiblle at 28 from STV quest chain. It has a lot of stamina and is item level 42 so it is eligible for BC chants. Also for 29 twinking, Humbert’s Helm is BiS. However you need a Horde alt to farm this.

I would just link my armory page, but unfortunately it is down. I have a lot of BiS, with the enchants on it. However I could not always find/afford true BiS for everything and many of the BC enchants are hard to come by. Currently I have 1.7k hp and about 115 dps single target. Happy Hunting! (sry for no links, website called it spam)

  14. Tatia says:

The Darkmoon Pendant is from the Mages Deck. You can buy the deck off the AH, or buy the 5 cards to make the deck. You can get the item without the Faire being in town, since the deck itself will summon the quest giver for the turn-in. The pvp neck is probably much less hassle unless we’ve got an scribe willing to make decks.

  15. Garwulf says:

Don’t forget about Archeus. Its stats aren’t the best for hunters, but you can put Savagery on it. :)

  16. hunaklu says:

so, um, how much hit rating does one need at lvl 30 considering i’ve got 3/3 in focused aim

  17. gzr says:

IMHO Hit rating for a level 30 is generally a waste of stats. It has some utility in PvP but for PvE, it’s pretty meh. Dungeon bosses just aren’t that hard at this level.

It probably is more useful for a WHU guild event but even there having 0% chance to miss is lost in the dps of a couple of hundred other hunters.

  18. Frostheim says:

Hit rating remains important when leveling, especially in PVE.

Keep in mind that your pet also has a chance to be missed, to be dodged, and to be parried. But as you get hit rating *all* of those go down, eventually to zero. Getting hit-capped can be a 20% dps increase in your pet’s tanking dps — which is a huge increase in its threat and ability to hold aggro.

  19. gzr says:

We’re going to disagree on this one Frost.

At level 30, I’d much rather see that itemization go towards agi rather than hit cap. With FD now available, threat is not an issue. IMHO, any dps increase from hit cap is more than offset by what both the pet and the hunter gain from agi.

Bosses and groups of mobs just aren’t that hard at 30 where hit would make/break a fight.

  20. Flintlok says:

Now that Flintrot (my DK lackey) finally got the chest and shoulder heirlooms for me, I had time to update the Dead Hunter Society BiS List with a few of the items we didn’t already overlap on – most notably the trinkets.

Thanks so much for the list! This kind of thing helps us focus our efforts over at DHS.

  21. Rhinochaser says:

Its been fun leveling the Dwarf hunter with the WHU guild. Seems like we are everywhere. I also leveled a DK to 65 on the Icecrown server and have been using him to help WHU groups with the group quests in STV. Even with a lvl 65 toon and 4 lvl 30 hunters that quest chain takes close to 2 hours. Lots of running back to the Nessingwary camp. Hope I can get some help with it on my Hunter now that he has hit lvl 28..
