While Frost works out the kinks of his blocked Gnomer video (which may be fixed by the time you read this (IT IS!!!)), it seems a good time to add my two cents on the place.  Some of my observations are similar to Frost’s, but so much video was taken (about 4 hours total between the two of us), and so much time went into clearing the place (7 hours, give or take, over two nights), that we agreed there should be two perspectives on it.

For those of you still in the dark (probably no one), the WHU has a guild of (currently) level 19 twink hunters. We storm BG’s, wreck instances with nothing but hunters, and generally just bring a whole new level of awesomesauce to hunterdom.  This was Frost, myself, and a few others collaborating on some huntering sweetness.

My thanks to everyone from Wyrmfoe that let me run with them, first and foremost. Bella had epic amounts of consumables. Hrist and Frost were Hrist and Frost, rocking it like usual and forming strategies for us. And Ali (Kay) scouted the place thoroughly on her main between our first night and second, so that we had an intimate knowledge of where the mobs were, what they did, how many would pull to us, etc. I’d like to say I brought some pet tanking expertise to the table, but I was mostly just making sure I didn’t screw something up.

Thoughts on Gnomeregan:

I. This likely wouldn’t have happened without the already-awesome strides made before this by WHU members in the guild. Our original goal was to 5-man Deadmines, which was blown out of the water by groups that cleared WC, Deadmines, and the Stockade prior to this run. So an epic grats to them as well! Gnomer, however, is the highest level instance we can zone into as level 19’s, and represents what could be considered “endgame” PvE for us.

II. This being my first time in it, I see why everyone hates the place. The alarm bots in particular, which can appear seemingly at any time and spell instant doom if not killed quickly, made every moment tense. The video can’t capture the ear-piercing vent screams of “BOMB!!” every time we’d see one.

III. Distracting Shot ping pong is shockingly effective in many situations. I tried to capture some of it on the video, Frost did as well in his, and it became a staple strategy of our run.

IV. True to hate-tank form, Hrist was usually the first to Distracting-taunt mobs and start kiting them around.  I think he felt uneasy having a pet do his tanking for him.

V. We were all in tank builds (7/3/0 myself), because the hardest pulls required all of us to be tanking at least one target, and often more than one. Lacking powerful heals, some bosses will just mow down pets, so multiple tanks will likely be needed for a long time in all-hunter achievement runs.

VI. The video is free of wipes, but don’t be fooled. The entire experience was not. Two nights and dozens of corpse runs. A fast respawn timer on mobs didn’t help either. The place is rough.

VII. Much like heroic tanking at level 80, it was often the trash that was harder than bosses.  Thermaplugg was kind enough to make things suitably epic, though, killing two of us and bringing the rest of us under 50% before finally going down.

VIII. Hunters can do ANYTHING.

Video

Frost couldn’t part with any of his footage, so it’s sped up a ridiculous amount.  I tried to take a smaller amount of footage and put it at a more manageable rate.  The result is that I had to cut large amounts of the run, but the two vids should give a nice overview of the place and our strats.

The opening shot of Frost on the canon is actually from Deadmines, but was too cool to pass up. All bosses are included, and “highlights” from the rest. And the music at the end was inspired by Bella, who actually sang the theme over vent as we hugged the wall in the penultimate hallway to avoid proximity aggro’ing a ton of mobs. Enjoy!

Love it! You guys are the best! I have learned so much from you all :)

  5. Rhinochaser says:

May I ask what is the mini map add-on is that shows the instance on your UI?

Man Im a bit disappointed. I was in the lvl 1 Hunter raid and whenever my mains server was down I went ahead and leveled my Dwarf Hunter on Icecrown for future adventures. I found out on the day of the lvl 10 raid that 19 was going to be the cap for the WHU guild and I had already reached lvl 22. Sigh…..

  6. Yorigrim says:

The worst part about going there at low level is the fucking trench of doom at the end, you aggro one guy and BAMM 10000 screaming dark iron dwarves and their pet robots come kill you. The last time I did it, I was level 25 and my friend was level 70 hunter and that fucking trench wiped us once.

And Rhino…just level another hunter haha. Take you a few days to get to level 19.

  7. Farstrider- Kaywinnet says:

Great footage and analysis Arth. You were a pleasure to work with and I hope we can do it more often. I had a total blast and really learned a lot about hunter tanking from you and Frost. Should we plan to do another insane run such as this I’ll be more than happy to scout out and see what troubles lie ahead… though nothing I think will be as complex as Gnomer. Not till Vanilla end game for sure.

  8. Bozanimal says:

It’s hard to tell from the video; did any of the Hunter loot – either of the two guns or the Petrol-Spill Leggings – drop? I think I saw Acidic Walkers (bleh), but was curious if you got any useful gear out of the runs.

Also, how did you get the requisite hit rating? There’s not a lot of +hit gear at that level. Did you do any quests to get some of the +hit gear? Did you use the Elixir for +hit (with a lot of wipes, that’s a lot of elixir)?

It looks like it was a lot of fun.

  9. Valacia says:

    definite awesomesauce!

  10. Arthemystia says:

Boz – No notable gear. As for hit, Frost and I think maybe Hrist were able to get the rogue heirloom gear, which has some hit on it. There’s an excellent boot enchant that gives you 5 hit, there’s rings in the guild bank that give you 4, and most of us were spec’d into all 3% hit. I was still missing at about 4% (we figured out that the hit cap was about 12% for the run), but that was the lowest I could get it to.

Rhino – Chinchilla for the minimap. I was getting frustrated with the default UI so I just imported everything from my main.

  11. Gamgan says:

Is there any chance for a list of those UI’s your using? Your set up looks very neat and organized, would love to test some out

  12. Beergasm says:

It looks like an un-setup bartender mod to me..

Anyway, looks like you had fun. I personally detest gnomeregan possibly more than any other instance in the game. I don’t even like running lowby guildies through there on one of my 80′s, so props to you.

  13. Arthemystia says:

lol Beer. I used the same button placements as on my main. Trouble is, we only have a fraction of the tools that we do at lvl 80. But I didn’t want to relearn hotkeys. As a result it looks incomplete, but there’s method in the madness. It’s looks sloppy, but it made sense to me.

Gamgan, there’s nothing terribly special. Bartender for bars, Chinchilla for the minimap. Omen and Recount. Pitbull and Grid to clean up unit frames. A couple smaller ones like Onebag and Power Auras. And I marked targets for most of the run because I had an addon for it, Hatty’s Mark Bar.

  14. Flintlok says:

thanks for the 2nd perspective on that incredible run, arth!

how do you feel the ravagers turned out for you guys? did their stuns help a lot? i have a hyena i’ve been using to maintain slow (along w/ concussive) in pvp, but was considering trying a ravager since slowed targets can still hit and cast… it may only be 2 seconds, but for the target it’s 2 seconds of absolutely nothin’… i kinda like that…

  15. Arthemystia says:

Ravagers would definitely be PvP viable, though I’m not a pvp expert (though I do arena regularly), so I can’t say they’re the best. As for the run, the pet choice definitely helped, with Ravagers stunning, the Tallstrider making them miss more, and the moth being able to heal itself.

At higher levels the best tank pets will start to coincide with the best lvl 80 tank pets (Turtle, Croc, Bear, Worm depending on the situation). But at this early level this worked out excellently.

  16. Frostheim says:

I got hit the following ways:

    – Rogue heirloom shoulders: 4 hit rating
    – Rogue heirloom chest: 6 hit rating
    – Deviate Scale Belt: 3 hit rating
    – Feet enchant: 5 hit rating
    – Simple Pearl Ring: 4 hit rating
    – Heirloom dagger: 1 hit rating
    – Focused Aim talent: 2 ranks

Total Hit Rating: 23 (10.87% hit)
    Total Hit Chance: +12.87%

I never missed; however, my pet did still have 1% misses

  17. Dyinside says:

nice mission impossible track in the middle of the video lol. great job on both videos

  18. Rhinochaser says:

Arthemystia: Always enjoy your contributions to this stie. Thanks again..

Still sad I have a lvl 22 Dwarf Hunter on Ice Crown that nobody wants. Why didnt someone tell me not to go past lvl 19? I would have stopped…:o(

The WHU guild has opened a whole new level to the idea of a hunter playing “community”. A new level of playing the class we all enjoy and im sure for a lot of people, a new level to the game as a whole. Thanks everyone!
