We had another developer chat. The hunter-specific section was small, but some new info there:
Q. Will there be any new pet families added, or will we simply see more additions to existing ones?
A. We’re not sure yet whether we’re adding new pet families or not. It’s possible. Expect to see some monkeys, foxes and other new pet possibilities though!Q: Does the Marksman mastery (Double Shot) work like the Wild Quiver talent (provide a free autoshot) or like the Lightning Overload talent (a free whatever spell you just cast)? In other words, can Double Shot fire a second Chimera Shot?
A: Double Shot is a half-strength autoshot. Wild Quiver will increase the damage of the autoshot to 60-70% (or something similar). Lightning Overload (the talent) will likewise increase the magnitude of the Elemental Overload mechanic.
New pets = sweetness. Happy hunters abound. I’d be a little surprised to see a whole new pet family. Don’t get me wrong, that would be sweet, but it’s hard to come up with a strong niche for it to fill that isn’t already covered in our tanking/pvp/dps trees. A 2nd dps family sounds good in concept, but realistically we’d just figure out which tree was “best” and ignore the other.
If they were going to add a new tree, I’d love to see them split tenacity into a tanking and a soloing tree. So the soloing tree has pets talents that let them move faster and help you out (restore your mana & health, etc). Alas I’m pretty darned certain that Blizzard does not want our pets to ever compete with an actual tank class and take that raid slot from them.
Over on the MM end, we finally learn how the MM mastery bonus works. And it’s… well, it’s just kinda boring. Not that it shouldn’t be, these are supposed to be passive things and whatnot, but the thought that we’d duplicate an existing shot was neat. I’m not really worried about this bonus being too weak or strong — it’s really easy for them to tweak the proc rate here and there to make sure it’s on par with other mastery bonuses.

foxes and monkey’s should be pvp oriented
. i’d love to see a non-gorilla monkey that behaves a bit like my own pet rogue.
I would love to see a marine pet family. We could have sharks or killer whales, maybe seals or walruses. For this to be any fun, we would ofc need some more underwater action where we could have our pets swimming around doing swoop like attacks for high numbers of damage. Normally I don’t like underwater stuff because of the low swimming speed but that would also be quite easy to fix. How about an underwater version of EoE, instead of a dragon you would be fighting a giant octopus and in order to stay alive you need to move around between big air bubbles that will burst from time to time. Instead of riding dragons in the second face we could mount dolphins and attack the boss in swarms like fighter jets…
Oops… now I got carried away again… Dwarfs don’t swim very well do they? Just forget everything I said…
So… if you pvp as MM you’ll ignore mastery on gear since it wont benefit you at all? Or if you are designed to kite/cc stuff you’ll ignore it as well?
Sounds like a great way to get people to choose between some mastery on gear or some other stat: simply make the mastery bonus useless.
That really gives you confidence that they’ve realized hunters need to move arround. Also really helps in trusting blizz on not gimping focus (hello steady shot qq) either when it comes to movement.
Is blizz expecting us to never move in pve/pvp with such designs on focus/mastery?
Double Shot sounds kind of lame but to be expected, what i want to know is since they are removing a melee attack to make us more range focused are they going to remove the dead zone on our shot?
I don’t want to see a tank loose a raid slot to my pet either. Yet I’m with you on the split idea, I’d like to have my pet to have a bit more functionality while soloing or even in 5 mans, they’ve stated that pets should have more functionality and use in 5 mans in the past. I’ve yet to see it come to fruition save for at the lowest levels, I don’t believe that’s by design though.
I do want more pet options though no matter the talent tree I’m specc’d into. I can live without my spirit beast and have done so on my 80 when I finally quit holding out and dropped BM in favor for MM/SV right before the “buffs” went live in the last patch. I’ve enjoyed MM/SV both, but I’d like more options than a wolf.
OT: I’m still holding out for tameable druids. I’ve always felt since Vanilla our hunter pets should be able to double as our mounts. Feasible, probably not, but it’s an idea I think would be pretty cool.
Hammershot of Icecrown /Kiruch of Sentinels
Have you ever heard of the shoot and scoot Myrdreon,
At least in PVE hunters should almost never miss any autoshots and a skilled hunter in PVP should not be missing that many either.
The only thing this mastery bonus does that the others don’t is it gimps your dps if you move poorly. Movement punishes most classes and it is a true measure of skill to minimize the losses.
Lol at an underwater family of pets. A shame they could never go anywhere useful.
I personally think Blizzard is scared of hunters. They’re making us switch from mana to scare away large numbers, and they’re reportedly taking away resilience for crit defense. They can’t handle the awesomesauce they’ve created.
I’d be all for a split between soling and tank pets though. Would help immensely.
How about a gathering or farming class of pets? Monkeys and magpies would be great at that
I had high hopes when Wrath was released that I might finally get a moose pet. Sadly, I think that one will just have to remain a fantasy.
“You guys are just begging to face the moose!”
But Monkeys aren’t too bad …
I would love it if pet tanking was viable for raids. Seems only fair since tanks can take dps slots.
I’m sorry but everyone bitching about Doubleshot needs to look at the BM and SV bonuses. Increased pet damage an increased elemental damage, both passive. Doubleshot fits with the MM feel and is in line with the bonuses from the other trees.
And I must say that crying about focus regen is about the dumbest thing I have ever seen. Wait until the is hard data, and you actually use it to formulate an oppinion. Napkin math =/= Ingame Experiance.
Oh and not having to use a wolf is going to be awsome, I really love my Raptor
I think that they were asking about new families (like “Wolves” or “Cats”), and not new trees.
I’m new here, but from what I’ve been reading on the WOW community site there is going to be a huge increase in underwater stuff in cata. I would so love to have an aquatic pet.
I also think that doubleshot is in line with all the other mastery bonuses that have been released so far. I just hope that blizz will allow it to proc other thing when it goes off. more shots=more procs.
Foxes
I’m thinking that foxes are going to be taking Rouge’s places by finding traps
?
A fourth spec tree for pets… how about having some pets with utility? After the fight your monkey goes over and picks the lock on a chest. Or he stealths and saps an ogre. He could even wave a voodoo rod in combat and give a priest some mana back. You would lose out a bit on the DPS, but he would be usefull in other ways.
hey frost i was lookin at your gear and i saw u still have the t9 pieces i wanted to make a suggestion to see what you thought. Since t9 gives you the SS bonus with critical strikes of SS yea its decently good. no i was looking at you hit and its 188. t10 pieces have hit and hast like the sanc legs and gloves whish i do have. i think u should take the t10 pieces ovr t9 since you do have Death Verdict and Deathbringers Will. then you would not have to gem for hit only agi boosting your dps an you get a new SS bonus that increases your AP also incresing dps. right now im working on my trinkets and my fourth pice of t10 for the bonus trying to get DW right now i still got terrible trinks but i was easily pulling 10k deeps in a ToTC 25. just a suggestion comment me back!
Toon: Torous Dawnbringer Server
lol mispells typing fast sucks
also forgetting to put i pull 8.5-9k + dps in icc 25 and close to 7k in 10
They need a rabbit pet. One with bones, teeth, and a mean streak a mile wide!
Dasean – Frost pulls 10k on fights with heavy movement…he knows what he’s doing
. The T9 gear over T10 gear has been talked about plenty, and T9 is hard to beat…T10 gear is higher ilevel and higher other stats, but the T9 bonus adds TONS of DPS that outweighs the T10 4p + other higher stats. And the T10 legs are terribad, loaded with haste that we don’t need – worst piece of the set.
I am looking forward to be able to tame new pets in Cata. The fact that they are expanding the number of pets that we can store in the stables, goes to show you that blizz is going to be making new pets to get.
Squirrelly if u noticed hunters will need soome haste as of cata. and also if u noticed the top hunter in the game wheres 4 pieces of t10 for the bonus and hes a mm just saying but if u noticed it was a suggestion and a question.
lol first i hated blizz for making us stick with the t9 2set bonus for so long while pretty much every class ditched their t9 as soon as they could get their hands on anything 251 or higher. i still have 2 pieces till i can replace them with 264 t10 4set. now it’s kinda funny the amount of comments i get from people about my 2 t9 pieces and how i can outdps a other classes with their 4 piece t10.
just running the spreadsheet, even when i get around to gettin t10 4 set and the crafted 264 legs, its only a measly ~150 dps upgrade over the current set up of 2xt9+2xt10.
Agreed – it’s nigh impossible to get rid of the 2P T9 bonus in 10man gear. I just wish I could upgrade my 232s to 245s, but I have bad luck in TOC pugs and VOA rolls.
I’ve spreadsheeted it out ad nauseum and it just doesn’t make sense to go for 4P T10 at iLvl251, even with the 264 crafted legs offset.
hi Zyrinx, i think the combination of betters stats plus 4set bonus on t10 might be able to put t10 ahead if you are only using 2 pieces of 232 t9. even then i think it’s a ridiculous amount of emblems we have to spend to get something like a 200 dps boost. 195 emblems for 2 tier pieces + 184 more for the saronite if you are trying to get the legs crafted that way (i’m too lazy to farm gold for 8 primordial saronite lol) including the other crafting mats and dkp on the marks of sanctification.
Dasean,
the best geared hunters in game surely wear 4 T10 pieces, but all of them are sanctified (ilvl 264), some of them even heroic (ilvl 277). And NO well geared MM hunter is going to prefer tier pants over pants from Deathwhisper or the crafted piece.
And we surely noticed that haste will be good in Cataclysm for MM. But we also noticed that 1) ArP will be converted to Crit and Haste so we will have haste 2) We dont know ANY numbers yet 3) and most importantly, you know, this is still Wrath and we are fighting the Lich king, not Deathwing.
Put your character to http://www.femaledwarf.com and you will see for yourself what is better.
I really should have posed the question about opening up all three trees to all pet families. I think that could do a lot to open up variety in pet selection for raiding hunters. I love my Dragonhawk, Ethan (see what I did thar?) and would love to be able to spec him to ferocity to raid with. I also think that making Loque a tenacity pet would be pretty awesome for soloing since I am in love with that roar.
Either way, having moar stable slots means that we can have a large selection of pets for any occasion and still have space for the pets we are sentimental about (means I can finally go back and pick up Peter, Purr and Deathclaw, my Spider, Ghost Sabre and bear that I remember so fondly from leveling.
I want the monkey to jump on their faces and stun them until they’re dead like the snowbolds in Gormok in TOC
I agree with Gastan. When they mean new pet families I’m sure they were talking about hyenas, boars, spiders, etc., not tenacity/ferocity/cunning.
I completely hate yes HATE the idea of Double shot, i hear my shammy friend talking about the dumb spell stuff a little hunter wannabe gets. well i don’t want to switch to a shammy just to get there little spell stuff that sounds way cooler than double shot! I LOVE MY HUNTER! Thats why he is the only 80 i have! And i love MM its by far my favorite i dont want to go to BM to level to 85 or SV because the mastery is more effective than double shot! think of something more intuative! your paid to think out side the box! we have a talent that fires a weak shot we don’t need a passive ability that does it to unless it has a cool looking effect some bonus to our SS DoT and fires basically every 1-2 shots fired(including Chimera and Aimed not just auto shots!) this is making my hunter look alot less exciting in end game and final talent choices… yes this is QQ but its QQ for everyone who is afraid of the OP rogue going “suck it up you big baby i don’t have a problem with any of my abilities” (always this is said as they slaughter you, never during an actual conversation, rogues can’t hold conversations they kill the person they are chatting with because they whinned about something!) Yess QQ but please make Double Shot more interesting! /cry /cry
P.S. Frost Do me a Favor and let BRK know what I said he holds our hunter futures in his little alpha level 1 hands!
