The Voice

When we’re reviewing boss strats in MNK, either Hrist or I do the explaining over vent.  Hrist ’cause he’s in charge, and me because Hrist’s girlfriend is often working over the phone in the same room as him, and she apparently doesn’t want conversations about shooting and killing trickling onto her work calls. Normally I’d appreciate that, but they’re in Texas and as I understand it that’s normal conversation there.

At any rate, several times now Hrist has explained a strat and people didn’t really get it and asked for clarification. Then I’d say the same thing, and then they got it. The second or third time this happened, this conversation broke out:

Hrist: “Fine, I’ll just have Frost explain it since apparently you only understand when he says it.”

Healer: “He just has The Voice.”

Frost: “The Voice? What the heck is that?”

Healer: “The ‘learn it or else’ voice.”

Bella: “OMG yes he does!”

For the record, this makes no sense at all. Hrist sounds a lot more like he’s about to punch his monitor when he’s explaining something for the third time than I do. And after further investigation, The Voice is apparently not my normal voice, but rather when I’m explaining something it turns into The Voice. Learn it or else.

Anyhow, we had a nice raid last night and got the plagueworks ICC quest to do Rotface and Festergut (gotta kill the 2nd one without dying, basically). I love doing these guys back-to-back, because I love to compare the damage meters on them.

I figure Festergut is darned close to my max dps. I’m pretty confident that I don’t lose a single shot to moving, so vile gas is the only dps gaps I have (and I hate them so). Then Rotface is a fight that requires occasional movement, sometimes over significant distances. Both are single target fights. So I feel like comparing them really gives me a feel for how much dps I’m losing to sloppy movement. Last night it was 500 dps — lots of room for improvement in other words.

Which, strangely, makes me kinda happy. Because of that I know I don’t need gear upgrades to improve my dps. Just by working on it a bit more I can improve my numbers a lot :)

I think we need to hear a clip of “the voice” in the podcast :D

  2. nheco says:

I also hate the vile gas thingie….espeacilly cause that only happens to me if i cast Rapid Fire….every single time i see some procs active and i think “Great! Now Rapid Fire and lets dps the crap out of him!” BOOM, im vomiting all over the floor cause of stupid vile gas…

    and nice dps btw ;)

  3. Deepfriedegg says:

    Another fun story.
On another note: That DPS on Festergut is impressive (and Rotface even more). We have similar gear – basically the only huge difference is trinket: Death´s Verdict vs. Mirror of Truth :) Athough I know that DMC:G + DV proc + Rapid Fire is a deadly combo and I had to be the ranged guy that gives Innoculated to melee group once, does it justify 700DPS? I just wonder how much is a skill difference , how much is fact that it was only my 4rd attempt on this boss (and 1st to get past Pungent blight0 and how much is a group comp (compared to you I was missing 2% of kings, 15% of Armor reduction, 4% physical damage but had +15 stats from imp GoTW.

Yeah, I know I screwed timing of Rapid fire with Greatness proc once and movement wasnt ideal…

…does it justify 700DPS DIFFERENCE between your and my dps: 8200 vs 7500
…and also I had +13% magic damage from warlock while you didnt have it

  5. Ganuke says:

In my former guild the GM sounded like a drill instructor (in a nice way though).
When the group met each other at a guilmeeting it turned out he was a little tiny very small person !!
    Voice doesn’t say everything!

  6. Bloodbàne says:

Ewwww….breaks my heart to see your Festergut 10 man dps since mine is lower…a lot lower – still #1 in my guild but I could be smoking my guildmates :) And if I compare us on Wow-heroes, we are pretty close gear wise and probably have the same pieces, just itemizing differently with rings and trinkets.

Time to do some more practicing. *grumble grumble stupid dues i gotta pay grumble grumble

  7. Omogon says:

    8.1K !! Gawd……I’m soooo happy when I break 7K. :D

  8. Thorntas says:

My girlfriend calls it the “Professor Voice”

    I should start raiding…. :-D

  9. Oyless says:

For anyone who wants to learn this voice they need to take “Voice 800″. For Educators its a requirment, essentially its not a class in itself but rather a method that is taught throughout your educational learning carreer. Every class dwells on this during each lesson. Those who don’t pick up on it won’t get the response that those who learned it do. The nickle and dime explanation on “The Voice” is… Be confident, you have to have made a decision and stand by it before anyone questions it kind of tone, assertive yet understandable (not rage/hate filled), Authoritative, and being able to explain things in a 1000 different ways in just a few words without even thinking about it. The best “Educators” are those who can pull it off. People think that having a class that always ask questions is good and a class that doesn’t ask anything is the opposite. Yes and No. Just because they don’t ask doesn’t mean that they don’t understand it, seeing the results after the explanation shows everything.

I think I went off on a Tangent, Oh well. Basically it sounds like you could be in Education, though having the patients to deal with students is another factor.

  10. Arthemystia says:

I am an educator. I have never heard of such a course or method. I just pop the mental equivalent of bloodlust any time I need to get something done, and generally things fall into place. Keeping it off cooldown for the right moments is probably the only challenge.

The good news from this post is that my current dps is damn close to Frost’s on Festergut. The bad news is my Rotface dps is considerably further off, meaning I’m losing more to movement. As always, your posts provide excellent benchmarks to shoot for.

I’ve been known to zone out before during boss explanations, though. My learning is almost entirely visual, so even with a great explanation, about 90% of the time I won’t actually understand what’s going on until I’m in the fight.

  11. Myrdreon says:

You loose 500dps due to movement, but the paladin gains 500dps… did he find some imba gear that first run or was there something else going on?

  12. Frostheim says:

The pally died on festergut and spent a chunk of it dead before getting b-rezzed.

  13. Sargaents says:

Frost i gotta ask man. In that recount table against both of those bosses which of your specs were you using cause if you were using mm spec then i need to step it up a notch cause i cant hit that mark on either of the bosses and i only slightly lower gear score then you. Please let me know so i can decide on whether or not mm is best for my laggy computer. Maybe you can tell me if i am doing something wrong. Here’s my character. http://www.wow-heroes.com/index.php?zone=us&server=Vek'nilash&name=sargaents
    Thanks.

  14. Arthemystia says:

Sarg – Before Frost answers that (though I’m presuming the answer is MM), my own guild runs with me as MM and another hunter as SV. Similarly geared as Frost, etc. And while Frost’s dps totals usually elude me, both of us have come close to these totals (well, on Fester at least). And while I’m normally ahead of our SV hunter, I rarely go an entire night beating him on every boss. I consider it to be evidence of the oft-repeated maxim that how you play the fights is much more important than spec or gear.

MM is producing the highest numbers right now on nearly every boss, so that’s probably the way to go unless your raid needs you for something else. But the minutia like stacking cooldowns and not missing auto-shots is what the top hunters do better than the rest of us, so that (fortunately or unfortunately depending on your outlook) is just as important to work on.

  15. Frostheim says:

I was MM in those fights. I only use SV for saurfang so far, and the BM spec is for soloing.

  16. Theronas says:

I’m wondering exactly how essential is the t9 2p set bonus – I have t10 2p set bonus but not t9 as I have never ever won a single trophy from TotC25. However, would it be worth it to discard my ICC10/25 pieces and use 2 t9 conquest pieces instead to get the set bonus?

  17. Squirrelly says:

For me, Koralon is the boss to test DPS on, not Patchwerk. Easier to get into, drops stuff of value, lasts long enough. Sure, there is a TINY bit of fire to move from, but it’s a lot less than Festergut movement and less impact when it does happen than the 6 seconds (or however long it is) of puking…

  18. Bindura says:

Damn; I am not even sure if I had full 25man buffs I could break 8k. My best dps on Koralon is 6.8 in 10man. There is some gear discrepency between us but certainly not enough to warrant +1000dps. I of course would like to blame my 450ms of latency…but we know that won’t make that big a difference either.

I figured I was in between competent and skilled but you have just shot my ego to tatters, so messy all splatterd on the wall…you using buckshot in that cannon of yours? In saying that I think your competent hunter should be pulling more than 5k dps on Saurfang add duty in 25man…thats what I pull in 10man in roughly equivalent 245 gear.

  19. Bindura says:

Remembered as I posted, I don’t use epic ammo on Koralon, that helps ease the pain slightly. *scraps some ego off the wall and gingerly bandages it back on*

  20. Deepfriedegg says:

    @Theronas:
It is character dependent but generally if you have 2 T10, 2 T9.5 and you are MM, then the bonus from 2 T9.5 is so essential that you dont want to lose it until you can replace both 9.5 pieces with two T10 (but preferably 1 T10.5 and one T10), assuming you can maintain cca +19% damage boost to SSt and SSt portion of Chimera (from 2T10 proc and CotH). The stats increase from any other piece of armor is probably not going to outweigh DPS that brings you 2 T9.5

  21. Eena says:

One word comes to mind after reading some of your blog: dedication. If you’re gonna do something, do it well and you guys give hunting dedication a new meaning. I’m seriously depressed but also inspired to break out of the ‘huntard’ category. I have never heard of pet food with bonuses before – what is wrong with me? Seriously though, any chance of some videos demonstrating advanced hunter techniques, with the Voice of course.

  22. Deepfriedegg says:

Well, pet food… Spiced Mammoth treats is a 30str/30sta pet food, that give ICC10/25 geared hunter 15 DPS which translates to roughly 5000 damage over the course of the fight. So, if you are sure you move perfectly and dont miss a single autoshot (yeah, one autoshot crit makes more damage than this buff) and wiped because boss had 5000 HP left, then go for it. Otherwise just make sure that your pet is happy and is doing 125% of its damage.
I know it is not much in line with what a good hunter should do (maximizing buffs), but this pet food is not something that is going to earn you a boss kill.

  23. Oyless says:

Arthe, “Voice 800″ that I was referring to is a high level graduate music class that music educators have to take. Unless you are in music I doubt that you would have heard about it. Of course all Universities have different class set ups and names. I was just able to modify what I learned and found that it was taught by many other classes as well. It sounds like though you like to make your students use their Critical Thinking skills as much as possible, hopefully all educators do this.

  24. Theronas says:

But that’s the thing – as I said I have never won a single trophy, I can’t get my hands on 2 t9.5 pieces, I could only get 2 t9 pieces with emblems alone, and those are definitely worse than what I have now, except for the set bonus. So should I still go for that set bonus with just t9 emblem pieces?

  25. Schmevan says:

I actually know exactly what you are talking about. My 25 man group has different people raid lead and there is one that has the “Airplane Voice” that we all know and love. Personally I think I’m more on top of my game when he is calling out blood beasts, bonespikes, and spores more than the arrogant one who thinks he is the leader of every raid he is in and calls out EVERYTHING. Personally I only call things when there isn’t a need for tank or healer communication. DPS just needs to do what deadly boss mods tells them while still doing as much damage as possible. Sometimes when I’m not leader there is so much QQ about “DPS get on this or that” that I mute the raid leader so I can concentrate. Anyway I for one believe, “The Voice” is a very real thing and all raid leaders should have it XD.

P.S. its “Airplane Voice” cause he sounds like a flight attendant giving instructions lol

  26. Bloodbane says:

Woo dues paid! 8551 dps on Festergut :)
