I agree with most of what you said Darkling, but my articles deal with pet tanking. Any dps pets, which would include the cat and devilsaur, are too squishy to survive tanking instances, raids, or even difficult soloing endeavors. They lack the crit defense, extra avoidance chance, and health pool to approach “normal” tanking. Their threat will be fine for most of what we do as hunters, and are probably the best choice if you’re not tanking instances and just soling quests and such, but there’s a limit to it.

You know, I have a pet from each category so I can feel them out:

Silverclaw the Frostsaber (cat/ferocious)
Ornery the crocolisk (tenacious)
Turquoise the owl (cunning)

I find the cat to hold threat just fine as long as i send him in before I start firing. Holds threat better than my Devilsaur for some reason. And with Heart of the Phoenix/Bloodthirsty/Lick Wounds he is actually more survivable and lower maintenance than my tenacious pet! Plus the advantage of stealth for hiding and scouting. For solo PvE, give me a cat.

As a bonus, Silverclaw is also my mount (or me and guildmates pretend so anyway – after all, both pet and mount are big white frostsabers!).

I love your tanking articles, inspired me to start trying abit myself, i used to do it a lil back in vanilla, but only in a leveling capacity, never with any legitimate end game content. And @ ur justification for naming the worm – i agree, anything that can headbut with a tongue has to be badass.

this might have been mentioned… i looked but didn’t see it, my apologies if I’m repeating someone,

but i have to say i vote for Skullcruncher.

I doubled checked it on Wikipedia, and it said that this was the name of a decepticon Headmaster (one of the ones who’s heads were a seperate Con) and i had to shout it out cause i think it is an awesome Worm name… just look at the massive jaws those things have! XD lol.

Goshawk – Your question is an excellent example of the difference between tanking and soloing. I recommend a croc for tanking only. For soloing, you want a turtle, no exceptions. Between MD and FD, aggro should never be an issue when it’s just you and your pet. Keeping him alive is a different issue. You’ll want to get your hands on some t5 if possible for the healing set bonus, and if you haven’t already you should look into the “Extreme Soloing” guides Frost has here on the WHU. There should be a link on the right hand side of any article to the Soloing section of the website.

Now I have a question… I have soloed mc all the way up to golemagg and although it doesn’t seem serious I would like to be able to solve my problem. I face two issues, maintain my pet living and maintaining agro. Now is it entirely necessary to use a turtle, or can I have my cake and eat it too with a crocodile.
And by the way, I have ironically named my turtle Zod. I pray I get to Arthas and his 264 gun. =D
