My earlier guides recommend a croc or bear for tanking. But when I started my pet tanking guides, I had no aspirations beyond Northrend heroics, and the guides were geared toward that. And in heroics, AoE threat is our biggest concern, so bear or croc remains your best bet.

But my last entry here on the WHU showcased my new bear for single target tanking. But then WHU reader and Big Red Rhino contributor Durante posted a big Wall O’ Numbers about the bear probably not being the best single target threat. And the great thing about doing science to things is that there’s very little subjectivity; either you’re right or you’re wrong. And it turns out he was right. The small, small number of hunter tanks out there ensures that the few of us writing about it will often be feeling around in the dark, so I’m always happy to see other contributions, even if it’s to point out that I’m wrong. So let’s revisit the topic.

The Candidates:

All our potential tenacity pets have a base damage ability: Claw, Smack, or Bite. All of these do equivalent damage. Problem is, some pets’ special abilities do less damage than this ability, and use up GCD’s in the process. A bear’s Swipe for example is great for AoE’s, but will actually waste a GCD on a lower-damage single target ability than his base attack (Claw). So we need to find a pet whose special ability exceeds the base attack, or provides the same damage with less focus cost. These include the Boar, Rhino, and Worm. None of these are bad choices, but we’d like to narrow things down a bit. I also looked at the croc, because while his Bad Attitude ability uses a GCD, we get multiple attacks from a single use of it.

I’m assuming for the purposes of this that focus isn’t a problem. The recommended tanking build includes 2 points in Go For the Throat, and most of the raid tanking we’re able to do is largely or entirely stationary. We’ll be critting a lot, thus generating focus. So while our pets won’t be attacking every second for the entire fight, there will be very little downtime in activity.

The Winner:

The two winners are Crocolisks and Worms. And why not a single winner? Because, frankly, it’s very close between the two. A lucky run with the RNG could put either one on top on a given fight. It’s also hard to approximate data for the croc, because while we can generate an average for their Bad Attitude hits, we can’t account for boss attack speed or BA’s uptime, which are wildly variable depending on the boss and fight length. But suffice it to say it’s close enough that either one is a viable single target tank.

Bears are still great heroic tanks (maybe even the best) because the downtime for the croc’s ability can hurt you for an entire pull occasionally. But for single target, croc it is, or a Worm if you’re without an armor reducer (Warrior or Rogue). I’m sure my bear Archibald will be devastated, but Witwicky will undoubtedly be a happy croc.

Swiss Army Tank:

Turtles are great backup tanks for their damage mitigation. Bears are good AoE tanks for heroics. Worms can be useful in the right setup. But if you’re hurting for stable slots and want a single pet for all your tanking needs, level a croc. Excellent single target, AoE, and all the survival talents that come with any tenacity pet. And please remember that tanking isn’t soloing (a surprisingly common mistake), where you want a turtle.

Tanking News & Notes:

1. As stated earlier, bears are still great for tanking heroics. But turn off Swipe for boss fights. Taking it out of the rotation will increase your single target threat.
2. The 2-piece t7 set bonus is still essential to tanking. But the 2-piece t10 makes an excellent complement. Most of us have the badges for this by now, so it’s something to look into if you tank.
3. This article, and indeed any of my pet tanking articles, shouldn’t just apply to those who are trying to tank Northrend raids/heroics. For example, a while back some guildies and I wanted to run MC. There was only 4 of us, and we had no tank, so I tanked it. Yes, I know, Frost solos MC. That’s not my realm of badassery. It wasn’t an epic achievement, but we had fun. So regardless of your level of tanking, I hope anyone who is attempting to tank is finding some fun outlets like this to showcase their talent.
4. In a small nod to the roleplayer in me, I name all my pets after Transformers (my original WoW guild was Transformers-themed). But I haven’t settled on a name for my new Worm. A genuine WHU pat on the back to whoever comes up with the best Transformers-themed suggestion.
5. Thank goodness Rhinos didn’t come out on top here. They’re loud, they’re smelly, they make targeting a nightmare, and as we see below they can’t defend themselves from aerial assault. Judging by the level of hatred Frost harbors for elves and bows, as well as other writers like Euripides hating feral Druids, I can increase my readership exponentially by loathing innocuous aspects of the game. So add Rhinos to the list.

Rhino

Happy Tanking!

As a noobush Hunter of a sorts, I do not claim to doubt your science, yet there’s something I do not entirely understand. When tanking, the idea is to generate as much aggro as possible. While it’s defenitely true that the worm’s special ability will increase the damage it deals, doesn’t it also increase the damage of the rest of the group? Thus negating any additional threat the worm may get relative to the other damage dealers? In fact, since armor reduces damage by %, doesn’t that mean that your team will actually deal more additional damage than your worm gets from it (assuming they deal more damage than the worm, which seems likely)?

Please tell me the flaw in my reasoning. ^^

    Rhino FTW !!!

    Joking… :D
Sorry, I’m an elf with a twoll inside…
This is something I haven’t had time to try : pet tanking… Sad hunter… I miss my BM spec. :’(

  3. Soogluk says:

Excellent article as usual. The turn off swipe thing with bears should really help with my tanking…..don’t know why I haven’t thought of it before! Oh by the way, I think Scorponok would be an excellent name for a worm pet…..it just fits >:D

  4. FerrioClef says:

Hey Arth, great article, I’ve never considered a Croc for a pet before because I’ve always underestimated Bad Attitude on Petopia, but I’m definitely considering one now for my newbish hunter (currently on hold because I plan to roll a Goblin Hunter when Cataclysm hits).

As for the worm’s name, if you match a Transformers’ personality to the pet, then OBVIOUSLY he’d have to be StarScream. However, if you’re looking for a name that’s more stylish and appropriate, I’d go with Blot (http://transformers.wikia.com/wiki/Blot), one of the Terrorcons. (Side note: I rolled a Robot Mastermind back when I played City of Villains. I named all of my robot minions after the Combaticons).

  5. Gunho says:

Naming pets, always such a problem. But with a name theme you’re already halfway. Perhaps a variety on spittor? http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Spittor_%28BW%29

  6. Durante says:

@Snoggi You bring up an excellent point that the worm’s armor reduction can be a double edged sword in that respect. Since the worm’s increase in TPS stems from reduced target armor it won’t increase the DPS of any spell caster, so if you’re group is caster heavy your worm should see its threat increase relative to those DPS.

If your group has more melee it won’t increase your TPS relative to those players, but it still increases your total TPS. While it may lead to some players having to wait on threat, it will still give greater total DPS allowing you to down bosses faster and beat enrage timers.

  8. Vael says:

Good to know, Arth…I’ve still got my slime-with-an-identity-problem (“Ralph”) in the stable that I will certainly apply your info to, as I’ve never really done any pet tanking. Might be good for a laugh to whip it out, sometimes!

  9. Garson says:

I would put in a real life transformer for a pet name. Try Ribeoria as the name…go ahead, look it up.

But if you must I vote for the Transformer name of Retrax for the worm.

  10. Bernard says:

    UNICRON!!!!!!

  11. Rades says:

    Repugnus!
    Skalor!

  12. Snoggi says:

@Durante: Yes, of course. I keep forgetting that armor doesn’t affect magic damage in WoW. And of course the total damage per second increases. ^^

But I don’t agree with you on Rhino’s…they deserve a better special ability, because they’re totally awesome!

  13. Valacia says:

It saddens me that my favorite tenacity pet int he game isn’t the best for soloing :( I love my warp chaser, Scotty. It’s true that his special is most definitely NOT a damaging attack, but man I just love tooling around with him. While I’ve never tried raid tanking yet (my guild laughs any time I mention anything that ludicrous… /cry) I have done my share of soloing and I love him. I just couldn’t imagine walking around with a crocolisk or worm. I am a Draenei afterall, why, Scotty and I practically grew up together!

  14. Arthemystia says:

Thanks for all the transformers ideas. There’s definitely some good ones so far.

As for a worm’s armor reduction, I have to be careful to keep my focus on exactly what it should be: pet threat and tanking. Yes, the worm has some extra utility. But that isn’t directly applicable to our tanking, it’s an entire-raid thing. Frankly, most raid groups have armor reduction in some form. And both his acid spit and t-stomp won’t benefit from the reduction. Add those to the fact that a worm is only good for single target, and can’t tank heroics and such as effectively as bear/croc, and it becomes hard to endorse worms beyond very limited circumstances.

Whenever I’m doubting my choice in playing a hunter I simply log on this site, find and article and remember why we are the most bada** Mf’s in the game.

Btw, pets name should be OptimusSlime hands down.

  16. Fradin says:

Love the post Arth thanks again for your knowledge , i have a worm called wiggles as i thought it was very funny and approiate, but affter reading your 1st posts I rolled a croc as well I find the croc is great on agro i normally pick up about 10 trash when im soloing and then just md volley them down however you need to be quick coz if your using bestial wrath and kill command they don’t last very long and if you dont get a hit in you dont get loot. Still working on a couple pieces of gear before i try main stream tanking but with ICC and the Frost Emblems and guild raids lately have not had much time to try and gear up and practice , looks like i need to get back into nax and pick up 2 piece 2 tier set that i had long ago lol .

  17. Arthemystia says:

Good luck Fradin. I forget for sure, but there might be some t7 available through emblems (ilvl 200 though, not the 213′s). Gear is getting to the point where a lot of tanks, even casual ones, should be able to handle tanking heroics. The new PvP season that started today also opened up some great gear that we can grind out with just honor. So we don’t even need an arena team to gather upgrades, nor do we need to sacrifice emblems/badges that could go toward dps upgrades.

  18. Sorter says:

I say Starscream, just because Starscream had a slithering worm persona lol.

  19. Arthemystia says:

Starscream was always failing and betraying and stuff, though. Awesome name, granted, but I don’t know if I want to feel like my pet is plotting my demise at all times. That’s the job of the top rogue in my guild, and I don’t know how much more ill-intent I can handle.

    ;-)

  20. Kit says:

No one has suggested “Meganfox” for your worm?

  21. BaggyG says:

I’m thinking Ironhide for the name… Given it’s a tanking pet.

  22. BaggyG says:

Oh… and for the record my worm is called Fishbait. ;-)

  23. Arthemystia says:

Heh. You’d be the winner Baggy, except my turtle is already laying claim to Ironhide.

I have to research some of these names and pick one in the next few days though. “Worm” is just such a bland name, I won’t be able to stand it for much longer.

  24. Gravity says:

As a DK tank blogger, and former hunter alt, I like this site when it brings my interests together; and this is one post example why I enjoy it! Pets who tank are so win. I’d love to play dps with a hunter who was properly geared to run a heroic with me.
I really like the worm’s looks, to be fair (the northrend one) but I like how easy it is to target over the top of a croc.

  25. Foughorga says:

Dirge… the perfect Transformer name for a worm…

  26. Foughorga says:

    Or maybe Bonecrusher…

  27. Goshawk says:

Now I have a question… I have soloed mc all the way up to golemagg and although it doesn’t seem serious I would like to be able to solve my problem. I face two issues, maintain my pet living and maintaining agro. Now is it entirely necessary to use a turtle, or can I have my cake and eat it too with a crocodile.
And by the way, I have ironically named my turtle Zod. I pray I get to Arthas and his 264 gun. =D

  28. Arthemystia says:

Goshawk – Your question is an excellent example of the difference between tanking and soloing. I recommend a croc for tanking only. For soloing, you want a turtle, no exceptions. Between MD and FD, aggro should never be an issue when it’s just you and your pet. Keeping him alive is a different issue. You’ll want to get your hands on some t5 if possible for the healing set bonus, and if you haven’t already you should look into the “Extreme Soloing” guides Frost has here on the WHU. There should be a link on the right hand side of any article to the Soloing section of the website.

    Good luck!

  29. djh60185 says:

    worm name….. birdbait
not transformer based, but first thing that came to mind. More James and the giant peach thing.

  30. Mehkaela says:

this might have been mentioned… i looked but didn’t see it, my apologies if I’m repeating someone,

but i have to say i vote for Skullcruncher.

I doubled checked it on Wikipedia, and it said that this was the name of a decepticon Headmaster (one of the ones who’s heads were a seperate Con) and i had to shout it out cause i think it is an awesome Worm name… just look at the massive jaws those things have! XD lol.

  31. Arthemystia says:

I’ve decided to go with Spittor! Thanks to Gunho for the suggestion. From the link posted:
“Spittor is a typical Predacon toady, full of arrogance, overconfidence, and, most of all, stupidity. His arsenal of poisons more deadly than a Cybertron razor snake, however, make him a force to be reckoned with when he can focus his anger. One touch of his membranous skin can pump enough toxins into a Maximal to drive them to dementia, and then he can head-butt them into submission with his tongue. ”

….anyone who can headbutt with their tongue HAS to be a badass.

  32. Yukayoh says:

I love your tanking articles, inspired me to start trying abit myself, i used to do it a lil back in vanilla, but only in a leveling capacity, never with any legitimate end game content. And @ ur justification for naming the worm – i agree, anything that can headbut with a tongue has to be badass.

  33. The Darkling Thrush says:

You know, I have a pet from each category so I can feel them out:

    Silverclaw the Frostsaber (cat/ferocious)
    Ornery the crocolisk (tenacious)
    Turquoise the owl (cunning)

I find the cat to hold threat just fine as long as i send him in before I start firing. Holds threat better than my Devilsaur for some reason. And with Heart of the Phoenix/Bloodthirsty/Lick Wounds he is actually more survivable and lower maintenance than my tenacious pet! Plus the advantage of stealth for hiding and scouting. For solo PvE, give me a cat.

As a bonus, Silverclaw is also my mount (or me and guildmates pretend so anyway – after all, both pet and mount are big white frostsabers!).

  34. Arthemystia says:

I agree with most of what you said Darkling, but my articles deal with pet tanking. Any dps pets, which would include the cat and devilsaur, are too squishy to survive tanking instances, raids, or even difficult soloing endeavors. They lack the crit defense, extra avoidance chance, and health pool to approach “normal” tanking. Their threat will be fine for most of what we do as hunters, and are probably the best choice if you’re not tanking instances and just soling quests and such, but there’s a limit to it.
