I ran Utgarde Pinnicle heroic naked last night. Well, not really naked, I had my gun and wore my tabard in the interest of modesty. But you get the idea — zero gear aside from the gun, which really is all a dwarf needs.
Suffice to say that I had reasons for the naked run that involved the collection of data. But that’s not the point. The point is the Reigns of the Blue Proto-Drake dropped – the first time I’ve ever seen the drop, and I got it.
I am very grateful to my group of regulars for tolerating the naked run in the first place (they were running for badges, not to entertain my experiments), but even moreso they all passed on the drake because they were on alts and felt it should go to a main.
But man, no loot was ever less deserved, I can tell you that.

Due to the quantity of fail tanks out there for pug dailies I have resorted to using the xbow out of utguard pinnacle rather than my Zod’s, downgearing yourself in the face of failure sucks but what can you do. Now I have never gone as far as you frost but thats because I am modest of my beer belly….
What kind of ammo were you using?
@Perren: why did you downgrade your bow? Not to overaggro? Well, our new MD + Volley is the best feature for tanks threat-wise in this patch. You transfer to him threat from around 40K damage and you cant overaggro him till the end of the pull, especially with FD….. I guess these two abilities are more useful to use than weapon 64 levels lower

LOL I bet the most annoying part of doing that Frost was the having no hit rating hahaha, truly painful.
@Scx: I dont think that was the most annoying thing because he had 6% chance to miss (i can see a draenei on the picture, therefore only 6%). I think that having 6000 AP, 2000 AGI or 50% crit less is what really hurts
See… just show a little skin and you can get anything you want.

I saw it drop for the first time a couple weeks ago. Probably been through there 30-40 times. Of course I lost the roll.

Grats on the mount. It dropped about a month ago when I was doing UP with some guildies and everyone rolled. I wont it by one point. One of my guild mates still won’t forgive me.

44 ..FORTY FOUR …runs through UP and it has dropped once …and I didn’t get it….but I don’t care ….I’m not bitter about it !!!
I won that drake on my second trip into hUP and I love getting random envious comments from people who see it, it’s one of the best looking mounts/drakes in the game in my opinion!

I’m curious as to what the experiment was…..the point at which we’re allowed to mock a PuG dps’er for mind-numbingly low meter numbers??
I’ve been really tempted to do an experiment that involves seeing who I can out damage wearing Teir 1 and using Rhok’delar, or more likely, how quickly I get kicked out for trying.

In my mad dash to 80 I somehow missed ever going into UP. Finally one night a guild member was looking for something out of there and I went in there and realized I had no clue about the bosses (not that hard, I just didn’t know). So the next day I go in there with a random group and guess what… not only do I get a couple of achievements, but the blue drake dropped and I actually won the roll (which I felt a tiny bit bad about because I didn’t make it to the end of the fight). The tank actually went as far as offering me 6k gold for it, but as I make a sufficient amount on my own, I turned him down. Congrats from a fellow blue proto-drake rider and welcome to the club. it would be interesting if you ran it again with the same people but with your full gear to see if their dps drops significantly.
Believe it or not thanks to the PUG system I have grped with tanks bad enough on bosses with dps that was crappy as well that MD and FD weren’t enough, I have pulled agro a 2nd time with FD still on cooldown, mainly just keep it for bosses
I switched to BM with my bear in the middle fo one instance just so I could pick up the threat with him if the miserable Pally tank lost it

By the way, when you said gun only, does that mean you didn’t use any ammo either? What did you shoot then? Your beard does look a little shorter… *grins*

On my very first OCC run, the noob DK tank rage quit after dying on the first boss. After 3 other tanks zoned in and immediately left after they saw it was OCC, I switched to my BM spec and had my Worm tank the rest of the instance. The healer was great about it and we got through it as a 4-man without anybody dying the rest of the way.

Congrats on the blue proto Frost! I’ve never even seen it drop much less had the chance to roll on one. I too am interested in seeing what the naked run will result in.

Hey just for everyones info i was doing Occulus the other night on my alt and notice that in the final chest after killing the main boss there was a sack of gems when i opened this up i got 3 gems , 2 truimph emblems and the reins to a blue proto drake mount, yes a mount. I guess blizzard got fed up with everyone leaving the instance they have now put a reward in place to kee[p interested so all you mount lovers theres one now in occlus too just remember each person must click on the chest to recieve there bag of gems.

The real funny thing is that you probably did as much damage naked as most of the guys that I ran heroics today with. Honestly, I ran with 2 guys today and they each pulled 800dps. I checked their gear – blues – which should have given them much more dps. You are right, gear just gets into the way, these guys simply didn’t know how to play the game.
The new lfg tool now allows for folks who never entered an instance to experience this content. That in itself is of course not a bad thing but weird, as if WoW turned into L4D.
Is that the trick to getting the damn protodrake to drop? Running naked in UP?
I’m gonna go back and try that right NOW!
