As we all know, the last big patch is out before Cataclysm hits, so it’s a good time to update the WHU on what we’ll need to know for tanking. So there’s a few nuts-&-bolts updates hidden inside my thoughts on tanking in general right now, as well as a video featuring the new content.
As you may have seen, we can’t check the “tanking” box for even regular-difficulty instances in the random group finder. Some small red text informs us that “your class may not perform this role.” I yelled into Vent upon seeing this, eliciting laughs from my guildmates who had already anticipated my reaction. But what it means is this: Blizzard doesn’t think we can be tanks.
But forget them, we know better. And they’ve made it a bit easier for us. With the 90% pet AoE avoidance without spec, it frees up some points in our pet spec. I’m currently running with the following: http://www.wowhead.com/?petcalc#0d0GbrMzbzoM
As I push forward into raids, threat is becoming more of an issue than survivability for me, so I splurged on Spiked Collar instead of something like Silverback or Last Stand. Either of those is appropriate for the final 2 points if your pet’s health is a bigger obstacle than threat, as it is for many who are new to tanking and are using a lot of raid gear. The WHU’s updated recommended pet tank build includes Last Stand, for example, which is prefectly fine for many tanks. And the new Culling the Herd, while a larger total dps increase, won’t amount to better pet dps than Spiked Collar, so avoid it for tanking.
And with the 100% resilience transfer to pets now, we only need 132 resilience to d-cap our pets (including the 4% crit reduction from their spec). Any tank set worth its salt should probably include some PvP gear anyway, so this should be a breeze.
There’s two other changes of note: One is that Volley works with MD now. Adjust accordingly on trash pulls. The second is that Cower no longer affects threat, but reduces damage by 40% for 6 seconds. After talents and on auto-cast, this will amount to roughly 8% reduction in total damage. It slows your pet’s movement by 50% while up, but I don’t really see a huge downside to that aspect of it. Barring special circumstances, leave it on auto-cast. I did notice one other thing: unless my UI is lying to me, our pets don’t get the 20% dodge nerf inside ICC like the rest of us do. I’m just saying…
Endgame Tanking
This is the part where I bemoan the lack of pet scaling with our gear. And not with avoidance stats… avoidance pieces would, frankly, kinda stink for tanking. Epic for soloing, but we’d be sacrificing a lot of threat. But I’m talking about crit, a higher percentage of attack power, agility, etc. Because we can compete with any average-geared tank in terms of health, armor, defense, etc. Not surpass, but compete. But we can’t generate threat like they can, even with the slight bone we were thrown in 3.3.
This can be dealt with even in lower-level raids (as with saw with Patchwerk, for example). Have some intelligent dps, give time for initial aggro, extra MD’s, stuff like that. But think about the dps you need to complete ToC compared to Naxx. The gap is gigantic. Intelligent or not, we can’t hold aggro against that kind of dps. Other hunters, ironically, could probably manage not to pull off of pet tanks since they have the best aggro drop in the game. But Warlocks, Warriors, and various other classes would have to nerf their dps a lot, which would result in frustrated players and wipes. Comprehensive pet scaling is literally the one big thing keeping us from being able to be decent endgame tanks. A long Taunt cooldown and inefficient kiting mechanics contribute, but I see this as the biggest culprit.
So no luck in 3.3 on scaling. But keep your fingers crossed, because as long as Blizzard plans to implement scaling, we should be able to remain viable almost-tanks.
Video Time: Forge of Souls Heroic Pet Tanking Pug!
New content, new 5M’s! And I tricked Blizzard’s role functions for this one. I grouped with a ret pally friend, he signed up as a tank, me as dps (we also grabbed a guild healer). Then we explained things to the random PUG’s once everyone was confirmed. They were cool about it, and we would’ve dropped group to let them find others if they weren’t.
Forge of Souls (Heroic):
Unbuffed Stamina: 2002
Unbuffed AP: 3808
Pet Buffed Health: 34.6K
Strats:
- I found the new MD Volley to be wildly useful for trash pulls. It might even be worth it to go MD, Multi-Shot, Volley on pulls of only 2-3 mobs to get those extra couple seconds of AoE threat.
- Pull the first boss to the side of the room for Phase 1, so that if you get the beam between you and the boss (where you want the boss away from you) you can run to the opposite side. If another person gets the beam, you can put your pet on passive and kite to wherever you need.
- Groupwide damage is more prevalent than most heroics even when you maintain aggro. It’s not a problem, just let your healer know beforehand to be ready for it.
- I’m getting better with hotkeys, but still revert to clicking occasionally. Still, it’s progress.
Expect more videos/strats/updates in the coming weeks and months, and Happy Holidays!

Is a Crock the best tenacity pet at the moment?
AE threat wise, yeap. I was the priest running through that instance, it was smoother than some with a real tank. The pet buff where they recieve over 40% extra healing makes it super easy on heals.
“Best” is a tricky term with this. Bears are the best single target threat, turtles are the best damage mitigation, and crocs are best threat for 3+ targets. I prefer crocs for heroics because of this, but any of the three are viable as tanks depending on the situation and your gear.
Also, fellow WHU reader Fejones was on his priest main as my healer for this (his hunter is actually his alt). I forgot to give him a shout-out in the article, but my thanks.
Also, it was my 2nd time ever in FoS here. Please excuse the occasional noob move, like Volley-ing the ghosts on the 2nd boss.
No apology required, it was a very impressive performance by you guys. Thanks for the 411 on Top tank pets by situation.
Could you expand on why crocs for 3+ targets, are better?
http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=52399
Xakhar – What Marty linked, in a nutshell. A bear’s AoE special ability will only affect a 180 degree radius, and any pull with 3 or more will usually have at least one attacker out of that radius. The 2 min cooldown on Bad Attitude is lowered significantly through talents, and a lot of downtime on it occurs between pulls, so uptime on BA is fairly high, meaning you’re getting AoE threat on all targets a large percentage of the time. Nothing wrong with bears, mind you. Either one is a viable AoE tank pet.
…
Also, Marty is an in-game buddy of mine, a skilled disc priest, and is very sympathetic to hunter tanking. I hope to showcase more of him in the future, since we’re trying some 2-man projects that I honestly didn’t think were possible initially, but are a lot of fun for hunter tanks.
Look forward to seeing more pet tanking videos. Would you mind showing us a breakdown of your gear and enchant/gem choices? I’m curious to see what your pet tanking gear set looks like.
Awesomesauce!
I wish that people on my battle group were nicer… i was hated on by the priest in my LFG because i rolled need on something i needed and that no one else could use, she didn’t heal me =(
34.6k Health is alot of health =D looking forward to more vids
Uru – The pet tanking link on the right hand side under categories will send you to a page showing everything I’ve written for the WHU. It includes everything you’re looking for, including gem, enchant, and gear guides. In a nutshell, it’s 2 pieces of t7 (and t10 now if you can), stam or attack power trinkets, and PvP gear, but the guides go into more detail.
That was a impressive performance, i often use crocs in heroics. I always companion by my bear, I’ve better try some type of pets. Thanks for a great vid looking for more!
Thanks for this article,
Here is an other website dedicated to pet tanking: Big Red Rinho with a smart forum: http://bigredrhino.wordpress.com/
What about hunter template ?
About Croc, Bad Attitude worth it only if you get hit but with 3.3 you can Misredirect + Volley. Then you just have to target pet target. I will give it a try.
Veldrin – Big Red Rhino is an interesting site. And since pet tanking is such an obscure niche, it’s one of the few others sites to talk about it in any depth. I don’t always agree with their recommendations for tanking, and some of their guides are good for general overviews but not specifics. But they’ve made some recent changes to improve and update the site, and they have some fun reader contributions, so it’s a good resource.
Vyrc – I’m lucky to have an understanding guild and a few really good healers, but it took time to gain respect and trust as a tank. With enough time, I’m sure you can get there.
I noticed on the last boss that your pet was 3rd on the threat meter. I also noticed that the paladin was doing a bit more “tanking”. I am a huge proponent of pet tanking and have done it in a few heroics, but i think that the key here was a good core group (healer, pally and you) and the rest was additional dps (especially, in this instance, the mage).
I think that this will eventually be possible, however, I’m skeptical that this is true pet tanking. It seems more like pet “off-tanking”. Sorry to be a downer on this, but I just don’t see this as viable right now. Just as Naxx wasn’t viable until ToC was well out and we could get better gear to compensate, ICC (level 1) won’t be viable for true pet tanking until much later.
I’m not sure what you’re talking about Selissa. There’s seemingly one aggro drop near the end of the final boss where he actually latched onto the healer for a second (the white bar) before I taunted him back. At the very end there was some sort of glitch as everyone showed up as 100% threat, and that’s it. The paladin was never above my pet, and it was among the smoothest pulls of the instance aggro-wise. You can follow it on Omen at the right hand side, as you can for many of the other pulls. And no, my pet doesn’t always have full aggro on all targets, but he usually does.
In the past I’ve posted dmg done meters from recount to support my tanking. Fights like the Patchwerk encounter (also here on the WHU) and other instances (some without any tank classes at all) show that pets really can tank all of this, and it’s not even terribly taxing with the right preparation, spec, and gear.
To illustrate my point, I’d encourage anyone interested to watch the Omen meter occasionally to see how the aggro broke down. For reference, my pet shows up as a bright purple bar…he has aggro during the entire first pull, in order to form a reference for future pulls. And for a counter-example, our over-zealous PuG warrior initiated the 3rd pull of the instance, and thus I wasn’t able to properly control it. Aggro there is all over the place, and the various Omen colors reflect that.
And to be clear, Selissa, I appreciate the skepticism. We should be critical of our own performances as well as material that we see that might not check out. I was the same way with various tanking videos that I saw as I began to make my own. But with our pets defense capped, and with a variety of ways to generate threat for them, I can assure you that this is all very real. Are we a “normal” tank class, and able to tank as well as them (assuming they’re geared and skilled)? Absolutely not. But we can still tank effectively in these settings.
Triple post ( /cry )
…anyway, I meant to say “Dmg. taken meters” in my first post. Dmg. done wouldn’t really demonstrate my point. Examples:
http://www.warcrafthuntersunion.com/2009/11/pet-tanking-heroic-hol/
or
http://www.warcrafthuntersunion.com/2009/10/off-tanking-naxx/
Yea, I can assure you his pet was receiving the brunt of the damage throughout that whole instance. The raid damage actually seemed to be slightly less than your average PUG tank too for the record. Watching that last fight again, the croc was top aggro until an aggro drop where I took top threat for some odd reason.
Do you keep Taunt on autocast, or do you selectively use it?
Selectively. Not only should we be able to maintain aggro most times without Taunt, but it’s on a long cooldown and shouldn’t be replied upon except in emergencies. As such, I try to save it for bosses. An aggro drop or errant dps’er on a boss is usually much more dangerous than one who, say, doesn’t follow a kill sequence and pulls some trash.
Have all these changes been made in the corresponding guides on this website?
ieat – Yes and no. Yes, in that a few specific things have been updated to old blogs, like the new resilience numbers and the updated pet spec. But not everything in these newer articles is a revision of earlier material. My guides on gear, gems, chants, etc. will not really need changed. The concepts will remain the same, even as the difficulty of the content and level of gear increases.
Very impressive Arthemystia I have seen really tanks have problems in there , be waiting on your next episode always a enjoyment to watch and learn something.
Arthe, I don’t know if Blizzard fixed it or meant to do it but when your fighting the first boss in FoS, and if your a hunter, when you get the Beam on you just FD as soon as possible. The orb doesn’t come out a hunter who does that. I’ve done this numerous times and it has worked everytime. Now, I haven’t been on in a week, its difficult to get on while traveling during the holidays, so they might have fixed it but I’ll check the next time I’m in there.
It works great if Blizzard didn’t change it.
Oyless – Thanks for the tip! I was actually still getting used to the fight mechanics when I tanked this, so I was barely aware of why I was moving away from the boss in the first place. And I’ve actually been tanking this place a lot recently, because we’ve been doing guild-only runs to get everyone their Scorpion dps trinket.
Fradin – Thanks as always. I have a couple ongoing endeavors (i.e. begging my guild to let me tank {insert challenge}), but whichever one they break down on first will be by far the highest-level tanking I’ve done to date.
ello question how do you get that much hp on your pet?
erik – http://www.warcrafthuntersunion.com/2009/12/pet-tanking-in-3-3/ will help a bunch with specifics for pet tanking gear. But it’s mostly 226+ PvP gear mixed with the stam-heavy Brewfest trinkets (there’s a few others good stam. trinket options from jewelcrafting and heroics). I’m also a Leatherworker, which has the benefit of giving me 8% Kings and Gift of the Wild at all times. Correct consumables help as well, such as elixirs (Guru’s + Protection), pet treats, and stam. scrolls.
Whoops. Linked the wrong blog:
http://www.warcrafthuntersunion.com/2009/07/pet-tanking-gear-chants/
Arthe, I’ve recently been back into FoS and found that FD on the first boss stills works like a charm when he tries to take your soul in order to heal himself.
On a side note, I finally got the Scorpion trinket. Woot!!!
(Forgive me, been away from playing hunters for a while, my raiding main is currently a Druid. I just stumbled on to this blog)
You listed Bear, Turtle and Croc. above and what they are each best for, but where does my old Gorilla fall in these days. Also, are the (old/new) exotic Tenacity pets something to stay away from (Worms/Rhinos) and if so why?
Aman – Gorilla’s got nerfed back in….I want to say 3.1. In any case, their special ability is better for PvP than tanking these days, and all tenacity pets have thunderstomp now.
As for the pets in general, my next tanking entry focuses in on pets and which ones are best for each situation. Turns out bears actually aren’t good single target tanks, so my recent raid entry featuring a bear was slightly in error. And it’s not that certain pets are bad, just that they don’t do anything the best. Any tenacity pet is a viable tank, but few are the best. But, in a nutshell:
Turtles: Soloing, Best Survivability Tanks
Crocs: Good AoE and single target aggro (heroics or bosses)
Bears: Good AoE tanks (heroics)
Worms: Good single target only (bosses)
Rhinos: Are awful. Kill them on sight.
If you want to tame only one, I’d recommend a croc. Or a turtle if you also try some extreme soloing.
I few days ago our guild ventured into ICC 10 and found the weekly quest was for Lady Deathwhisper. For this weekly we needed to tank the NPC out of harms way for the duration of the fight but his limited healthpool meant we needed to do as little damage as possible… I casually commented that my bear, Aldo, would be up to the task and was thrilled that I didn’t immediately get lol’d at hah! RL was open enough to see how well that would work and it was definitely easy to do.
Positioned Aldo in the back of the room. Aldo taunted the NPC off the start and I shot him an MD. NPC walked right into our little trap and stayed put the whole fight, safely out of harms way. I continued bringing the pain as a MM and made sure cower and mend pet were refreshed as often as possible. It worked like a charm and we all got free badges with minimal loss to our raids overall boss strategy! Hunter win.
Now to convince them to let me do this type of thing more often… hah thanks again for all the pet tanking tips!
ok nub hunter question wats a good pet for a lvl 29 hunter bm spec , also good and fast way to lvl 29-40 in 2-5days
GJ. I go soloing with my bear and me in pvp gear. Best I can get setup since I haven’t managed to get a couple t5′s. But I can manage most of Zg, chillmaw, mgt and almost Huntsman in Kara.
Anyway I chose the bear for the best AoE threat build up I found. I looked at Bad Attitude but never understood what it did. I read it as the pet strikes back as the mob hits me or something. But if it’s if the mob hits the pet, it strikes back, that looks awesome.
Which is it? I’d grab it and test it out but my slots are full until Cat and I like what I have stabled. Thanks for this discussion!
btw I’m new to the site and saw the other threads. NM the above post and thxs for the work you guys have put up!
This particular article focuses on tanking, which is different than soloing. You might be more at home in Frost’s Extreme Soloing Section:
http://www.warcrafthuntersunion.com/category/extreme-soloing/
That said, AoE threat is handled mainly via MD volleys in soloing, and Feign Death. You don’t need a pet with a great AoE ability unless you have others with you. Your best bet is probably a pet with better damage mitigation like a Turtle or Warp Stalker.
Between bear and croc though, I’d recommend the croc. Similar AoE threat, but the croc has better single target threat. And yes, every time a mob strikes your croc, it hits back when BA is up (which, after talents, is a fair amount of the time).
Hey dude, what spec are you in this video? Does it make a difference on how well your pet holds agro if i want to respec MM?
Zac,
This spec: http://www.warcrafthuntersunion.com/2009/07/pet-tanking-hunter-spec/
I’m not sure I understand the MM question though. Instances can’t be tanked in MM at all, you’d need a BM spec.
how can I increase the aggro of my pet? icc tried tanking, but my pet did not have enough aggro
This particular guide is outdated, as it’s from the last expansion. The first thing is to go through our Cata tanking guides (on the Cata Guides page linked at the top) to make sure you’re in the right spec (modified BM spec), using the correct pet (Turtle/Beetle), and are following general guidelines for tanking:
http://www.warcrafthuntersunion.com/2010/12/pet-tanking-in-cata-overview-and-strategy/
…for threat specifically, make sure you’re hit capped, tell your dps to hold off for 5 seconds or so to start the fight, and always, always cast Kill Command as soon as it’s off cooldown. And if you’re trying to tank more than one, use CC or it won’t work. Our threat is best single target.
