While you’re toiling away eagerly waiting to get out of work and explore the new patch, here is the Frostheim mini 3.3 guide, for those of you who haven’t been scouring the internet for details. With any luck, the new Hunting Party Podcast will be up a bit later today (we discuss ICC, the talents, the changes, the loots) for your patch downloading entertainment.
3 New 5-Mans
There are 3 new 5-mans available in patch 3.3, and the heroic versions drop ilvl 232 loot (equivalent to 10-man totc) — this includes trinkets, rings, necks, etc. So you may very well find some upgrades in the 5-man that can help us along until you get better from the new raid.
And if you’re still seeking an armor pen trinket, then you can get one from Forge of Souls heroic. Needle-Encrusted Scorpion should tide you over for your armor pen needs, if that’s the route you’re going.

Emblems of Frost
Yes, I have my very own emblems this patch. All heroic and old wrath bosses will now be dropping Emblems of Triumph.
You get Emblems of Frost from:
- Raid bosses (drop 3 each (I think))
- Daily “random” heroic (2 emblems)
- Weekly raid (5 emblems) – more on this later
The gear you get with Emblems of Frost is fantastic. Some of it better than 25-man ICC drops. In addition to being a higher item level, this gear is itemized incredibly well (meaning it has more of the stats you really care about). This gear includes your new tier 10 set (ilvl 251) as well as many others that are ilvl 264. Here is a list of the emblem loot: http://www.mmo-champion.com/index.php?page=904 You’ll need to click on the “emblems” tab. These items are pretty expensive:
- Tier 10 Hands and Shoulders: 60 Emblems
- Tier 10 Chest, Legs, and Head: 95 Emblems
- Trinket: 60 emblems
- Cloak: 50 emblems
- Waist: 60 emblems
- Chest: 95 emblems
- Hands: 60 emblems
- Thrown: 30 3mblems
- Relic: 30 emblems
Tier 10 Armor
We will have access to new Tier 10 armor – the unfortunately named Ahn’kahar Blood Hunter set. There are 3 versions of the t10 set armor, and it is working slightly differently than before.
- You must buy your ilvl 251 basic T10 set pieces for Emblems of Frost.
- To get the next step up, ilvl 264, you must already have the ilvl 251 version and then get a token drop from the 25 man that lets you upgrade it. You don’t have to pay anymore emblems to upgrade it.
- To get the best version, ilvl 277, you must already have the ilvl 264 version, and then get a token drop from the heroic v25 man that lets you upgrade it.
Note that unlike TotC, the “trophy” that you get to upgrade your item is specific to a mix of three classes, rather than generic for all classes.
You can view the tier 10 armor Here.
Weekly Raid
There will be a new weekly raid that will award 5 emblems of frost (and 5 triumph, but who cares about those old things). These weekly quests can be completed in either 10-man or 25-man (but not both for double reward) and can be done on normal modes or hard modes.
The weekly random raid boss options are:
- Sartharion
- Anub’rekhan (naxx spider wing 1st boss)
- Noth the Plaguebringer (plague wing 1st boss)
- Instructor Razuvious (military wing 1st boss)
- Patchwerk
- Malygos
- Flame Leviathan
- XT-002 Deconstructor
- Lord Jaraxxus
- Lord Marrowgar (ICC 1st boss)
Icecrown Citadel
Of course the big new thing we get in patch 3.3 is the new raid instance, Icecrown Citadel. ICC will have 4 wings, a total of 12 bosses, and at the end of it we get to fight Arthas the Lich King himself! But not so soon….
ICC will use a gating mechanic similar to what TotC used. At first only the first 4 bosses will be available, and that’s all there’ll be for the first several weeks. Then we get another wing for several weeks, and so on. In theory the soonest we’ll see Arthas himself is in February, and more likely March.
Once the 2nd wing hits, we will only be allowed 5 attempts on the final boss of the wing. Then we’ll gradually be allowed more and more attempts as time passes.
ICC has normal and hardmodes. We are not allowed to do any hardmode until we defeat Arthas himself — and it will be months before he’s available to fight. Also ICC is much like Naxx in that you can’t fight the final boss (Arthas) unless you defeat the 4 toughest bosses first (Professor Putricide, Blood-Queen Lana’thel, and Sindragosa).
Blizzard has also built in a noob-raid compensator. Long after ICC is all available, they’ll have a zone-wide aura that increases your damage and health and healing, and this aura will get stronger and stronger over time. So there will be plenty of time to complete the instance before this kicks in and it’s there for the fail raids that would never get to see the end content on their own merit. For the record, I fully approve of the noob-raid compensator.
The first 4 bosses that will be released with launch today are:
- Lord Marrowgar (http://www.mmo-champion.com/index.php?page=897)
- Lady Deathwhisper (http://www.mmo-champion.com/index.php?page=894)
- Gunship Battle (http://www.mmo-champion.com/index.php?page=893)
- Deathbringer Saurfang (http://www.mmo-champion.com/index.php?page=900)
Of these Marrowgar looks really easy. Lady D looks to be challenging.
You can take a peek at some of the awesome loot available in ICC at the boss links above, and here: http://ptr.wowhead.com/?new-items=3.3
Ashen Verdict Faction
The new faction, Ashen Verdict, will be available with ICC. You level your rep by killing stuff within the raid instance, and it looks like it’s going to be a bit of a long haul. However, there are some awesome advantages to AV rep:
You get a ring from the Ashen Verdict, much like the old Kara ring. It starts as the Ashen Band of Courage. It may not look that awesome at first, but as you attain new levels of rep you can upgrade it for better and better versions of the ring.
There are a bunch of crafting patterns that you get for rep, including blacksmithing, engineering, leatherworking, and tailoring.
You can see all the AV rep rewards (purchases) here: http://www.mmo-champion.com/index.php?page=910
Shadowmourne
If you haven’t seen it already, go ahead and take a look at the new legendary weapon, Shadowmourne. Marvel at the awesomeness that we will not be allowed to wield. Why, oh why, has the only hunter legendary every been the hardest to get, held by the fewest, for the shortest amount of time? Lament, my bothers, lament for our plight.

kool first one to post ok frost i know this isnt directly about 3.3 but since triumph emblems will be easyer to get now my question is is the t8 bounse worth keeping over the rest of the t9 and say the shoulders from emblems and the crafter chest cause for me to to those items i would have to break my t8 bounse cause i currently got http://www.wow-heroes.com/index.php?zone=us&server=Drenden&name=faòl
Mm indeed this looks like an interesting patch. I was looking at the patch notes and Misdirection has been completely redesigned, which would help with aggro control. Now we can use Volley and have more than the first 3 arrows be misdirected to whoever! :3
Thanks for this overview.
Excellent loot guide, Frost…I have been scouring teh interwebs for weeks and still managed to forget about that ArP trinket outta the 5-man. Thanks for the reminder!
Servers willing, who’s stepping foot into ICC tonight?
*raises hand*
This is awesome… I was wondering what all was coming out with this patch. Wasn’t sure if it was coming out today or not. Sure am glad that it is. They have made some great looking loot as well…Can’t wait to get to it.
Just not looking forward to the lag that started last night. It took 2 mins to loot 1 item. Man I hope that has passed. It seemed like everyone was getting it because people were talking about it in Trade.
Excellent overview! I have a question about T10 set bonuses – are they worth dropping 2 piece T9 for? 2 piece T9 is awesome, especially for MM hunters out there. I currently use the Triumph vendor shoulders, and the crafted chest, so when I get my first piece of T10 it’s going to be tricky to maintain that T9 bonus (unless of course I replace the chest or shoulders first
) Is it worth losing for the new set bonuses?
first of all i thought the legendary weapon would be for ppl who could use it for instance hunters can wield 2 handed axes druids can’t like that is wat i thought they mean’t it just keeps getting worse for hunters and with cataclysm with focus coming who will want a hunter that can’t even wield an axe send in the druids they might be better at it then us u never know they might let bear form wield axes i know this was long soz i am frustated why they won’t give hunters a break if i have said anything wrong with this plz tell me
Great guide Frost…thanks. Our guild won’t be seeing the new raids for a long time as we are just starting to get into TotC but I’m looking forward to the new 5-mans and resulting loot. Would be be nice to see an analysis of the bonus (T10 vs T9 vs T8) combo’s. I’m currently running 2xT8 and 2xT9 for their respective bonuses.
woot! SO ready for ICC! I am hoping we head in there tonight after our ToC25 run. Even if we fail I will love it!
@wolf: I am in the same predicament now. Except I have two trophies waiting for the 150 triumph (that I have been spending on orbs for my shamy) to get the 4 piece all at once to replace my t8.5 2p bonus.
I really like the 8.5 2p, but the 245 t9 gear, and the t9 4p combined out weighs the 8.5 gear/bonus, and I want every advantage I can get going into ICC. That being said, the 232 T9 gear is not very attractive for me, as it is only a minor upgrade, leaving it up to the 2p bonus vs the t9 4p bonus.
I was just wondering…Does the new Pet Talent “Culling the Herd” stack with the Wolf’s Howl ability?…Here’s the official patch not for it.
Culling the Herd: This pet talent has replaced the Avoidance talent in the pet trees (Hunter pets now gain that benefit automatically without expenditure of talent points). Culling the Herd increases pet and hunter damage by 1/2/3% for 10 seconds each time the pet deals a critical strike with Claw, Bite, or Smack.

Sorry for the double(triple now)post…/wrists at bad connection
Can AV rep be earned from the 5 man?

O_o???
Yeah, can you provide a source for the noob-raid compensator or its actual name so we can read up about it more?
Here is your source.

Last paragraph has the related info, but the whole this is worth a read.
Found this in a blue post:
“In the weeks and months after all twelve encounters are unlocked, additional attempts against the final four boss encounters become available. This represents the Ashen Verdict growing more powerful and gaining a stronger foothold in Icecrown Citadel. To further help raids, Varian Wrynn and Garrosh Hellscream will begin to provide assistance by inspiring the armies attacking Icecrown Citadel. This is represented as an additional zone wide spell effect applied to all players that will increase their hit points, damage dealt, and healing done. This effect will also increase in effectiveness over time. Players may opt out of the spell’s effect if they so wish.”

Aw crud, I should have refreshed once more before posting. Thanks Hrist.
I’ll tell you what has me most excited: the bosses for the weekly raid-daily thing. Why? XT, Sarth, and Jaraxxas are all on my tanking wish list. An excuse to down them well past their relevance is awesome.
Also, I’m against any measures to “dumb down” encounters for raiders, even in the long-term. My guild doesn’t clear everything, but I enjoy earning every boss we down. Any kind of progressive de-scaling cheapens that experience.
thanks so much for the patch guide Frost, yours was way easier to read and understand than Blizz. Also… /cry over the legendary axe drop. When will us hunters get our own legendary drop again?? … probably on the day Blizz give us maces. As far as the Noob-raid compensator, i look forward to it, it means that some of the lesser geared of my guildmates will be able to partake in more and more of the weekly raids, thus getting more gear and being able to do more raids. After all the biggest problem i’ve found since i got high enough to finally raid, is that no one wants to raid with someone who is under-geared, but the only place to get gear is to raid…. on top of the general hunter discrimination i get all the time in LFG it causes tears of frustration. all in all, this looks like it is gonna be heaps of fun and i can’t wait to get around to beating down Arthas’ front door. >:)
Thanks hrist and thanks frost for giving us this breakdown. Unfortunately I can’t even get past the login screen at this time :’(
Im spewing tried to log on this morning before work however all the realms would not let me connection looks like its bugged already. It would log me in then show all the realms active however everytime i tried to connect to a realm i just got dissconnect looks like blizzard has some work to do i hope they get it fixed by the time i get home from work in another 9 hours. So if you can not log on it could be blizzards wonderful new patching !
As an EU player this is a really good intro for all the stuff we hope to be facing tomorrow, if the servers are on our sides
. Good work, Frost. Posted it on my guild forums; this little guide is even awesome for the non-hunters around!
So my launcher was disappearing and wouldn’t take me to the log-in screen. So after a trip to Blizz’s website and following the steps in their troubleshooting on the problem…..it got worse. After the requisite spiral into tears and anguish, I’m currently reinstalling *all* of WoW. See you guys in about a week.
great overview! I wonder though…. why no mention of the new Spirit Beast, “Arcturis”? This too is huge for hunters. =)
/salute
Oh Arth sorry to hear that I posted Before that i could’nt get into the realms you can log in and see all the realms are active but it would not let me join any of them , i just keep getting disconnected by the server another great patch by Blizzard lol .I even tried my old Aussie realms and 2 US realms could not access any looks like blizzard has alot of work to do today/tonight I just hope its working bye about 2.30am Grizzly Hills US realm time as thats when i get home from work .
Same boat as you, Arthemystia. After original patch Wow just wouldn’t load on my desktop. Laptop worked fine, but can barely run the game.
Then the Account Management pages were down… finally downloaded, installed, and now in the middle of patching… I hope it works…
One thing i really dont like in this new patch is the new epic ammo
Is it really gnomish engineering to make arrows and goblin for the bullets.
Wonder whats the point is there ?
