How to Solo High Priest Thekal for the Swift Zulian Tiger Mount

High Priest Thekal in Zul’Gurub drops the coveted rare Swift Zulian Tiger mount. He’s a fairly straight-forward fight and not terribly difficult. And with the 3-day reset timer, you can farm him twice a week. Personally, I think the Swift Zulian Tiger is one of the more distinctive and attractive of the rare mounts.

When you first engage Thekal is there with a couple buddies and a pair of tigers. Start off by wiping out the tigers, which will go down really fast, then work on the boss trio. All three of them must die within 10 seconds of each other.

Press control-v to see health bars over their heads to monitor who you need to be dpsing. You’ll need to switch targets a lot.

From time to time your pet will get blinded (or put to sleep, or something) and they’ll all go attack you. They don’t do much damage, so this isn’t a big deal. More significantly Thekal will occasionally heal someone. You can try to interrupt his heal with Intimidation, but most likely he’ll be getting them off. I didn’t find this to be a problem – just switch to the target with the most health and keep dps.

When they’re all below 20% health, start vollying them all down.

Once their down Thekal will turn into his Tiger God form. At this point the fight is actually even easier. On occasion he’ll charge you, but again he doesn’t do much damage. He’ll do some power punch think for some aoe damage, and he’ll summin in a pair of tigers from time to time. Just dps the tigers down and keep on the boss.

And that’s all there is to it. The mount drop chance is now 1% – good luck!

Another way is to put your pet on stay in the archway, misdirect to him and feign death. Boss will continue to your pet and the adds will reset and you only have to deal with Thekal. It’s easy but not as fun.

Quick correction here Frost… It isn’t Thekal that does the heal… it’s the initiate with mana that does it. The way I’ve managed to solo it (quite often actually) is to just burn Thekal and the non-mana buddy down, forcing the one to heal (wasting her mana) and keeping a viper sting up… it’s slow going, but works 100% of the time for me!

You mean it wasn’t 1% chance before for these mounts? Hah…. no wonder I only ever saw a rare mount (raptor) drop once, ever :D

I found taking a gorilla along to this fight to be the best.
I just take pummel off auto cast, make a macro and when ever I see the casting bar I hit the macro. Boom, no more heals.
(To make sure the cast bar shows up all the time set the mob as you /focus. This way you can keep switching targets for even damage and still see the cast bar).
Before the patch it meant standing closer to the mobs, but now the name plates have a longer range you can stand future back.

Like you say, they don’t do a lot of damage so the turtles Shell Shield isn’t a necessary. (I don’t even have the 2 pieces of T5 for the extra healing, although I have stacked STA in my solo build.).

how can you solo him if you cant enter ZG alone?

Just have someone party up with you and convert it to a raid. I have gone into raid instances with someone who has just been in Dal doing tradeskills, mining/herbing, ect. So long as the other person isnt doing quests being in a raid doesnt affect them at all. The other person does not need to be in the instance with you.

I usually group with a friend while I’m one of my alts, log out, then have my friend invite my hunter. The friend is then free to leave group and I’m in a raid group with my alt. :)

You can also Aimed shot the heals. Works pretty well :P
