A lot of people have been raving about the new dungeon finder tool, and I too use and appreciate it. It has two main benefits: you don’t have to waste time traveling, and you get into groups faster.

That said, the quality of the groups is no different than they were before. Potentially a net loss, since you can’t put horrible wastes of human flesh from other servers (ie: the Pugoids) on your ignore list. It does not, as many suspected at first, pair you up with people of similar gear levels, which is sad. It will however keep you out of HoR if you have an undergeared person with you.

In the end, I think the speed of finding pugs and lack of travel time makes the new tool a positive. I certainly prefer having it to not! However, here’s what the new dungeon finder pugs look like when viewed through Frostheim Goggles:

pugmeter

Don’t get me wrong, I can appreciate that heroics is exactly where people in blue gear should be, to get geared up for raids. I expect low dpsers and I’m happy to carry them, but come on. 1200? 1300? When I was in blues and green (and a couple level 70s) I never went below 2k.

And horrible dps is not the worst that can happen. Not by far. Interspersed with the random players you’ll be paired with are the Pugoids, the worst of the worst of WoW.

Here’s a short list of exciting Pugoids that you could meet on your pugs:

  • A DPSer doing less dps than the tank. On every. Single. Pug.
  • The hunter who asked to roll need on a thrown weapon, because “I run out of ammo a lot.”
  • The rogue in Halls of Refection who didn’t dps during the first add waves because “I just realized I don’t have any talents. Spending them now lol.” (We wiped.)
  • Enter Ahn’Kahet. I ask if we can skip the optional bosses. Tank says yes. Dpser says yes. No one else answers. Tank says we’re skipping. We clear trash, as we’re passing the first boss the priest suddenly shouts “Why R we skipping bosses? They drop badges!?!?” I say “because we agreed to when we got in.” Priest says nothing else, waits for the tank to pull, then degroups and ports out. (They wipe, I FD)
  • Enter the instance and someone immediately says “I need a few minutes” or “AFK” or “BRB.” You know, after they just seconds ago clicked a button saying they were ready to enter the dungeon. This is disturbingly common Pugoid behavior.
  • Enter Occulus. The tank instantly degroups. Every. Single. Time. Wait 10 minutes for another tank.
  • The pvper in all pvp gear, usually really bad pvp gear at that. These people drive me batty. That said, I imagine they hate me in their battlegrounds as well with my pve gear. Well, or not, as I usually top the lists for damage done, kills, killing blows, and deaths :)

And I’m sure there have been more glorious Pugoid atrocities that my mind has since blocked out.

So what kind of Pugoid activity have you seen in your pugs?

    ahhh yes, the drawbacks >_>
worst i’ve encountered was a so-called “hunter pro” (playing a droodle lol), who thought HE could tell ME how to play just because he has a 2700 rating =b. i told him to go back to his bg and leave the pve to the people that know how >_>. alas, ye arrogant punks!

  2. Owyn says:

Well… I started playing the game recently, came over from EQ2 and made a Hunter as it’s the most similar to what I enjoyed in other MMO’s (Beastlord in EQ1 and Ranger in EQ2). I’m up to level 74 and haven’t done a group yet because I hate being “that guy” by not putting out the right sort of DPS for the class. It’s hard to know what sort of numbers I should be doing while leveling up, since anything that isn’t the current max level tends to be irrelevant.

  3. 'nora says:

Pugoid activity? Let me count the ways! Hunters who can’t Misdirect. Rogues who won’t use Tricks. Healers who want to DPS. Death Knights who pop Army of the Dead right on the pull of a boss fight (AoD still taunts heroic bosses, try it on Cyanigosa!). Recount spam in party chat. There’s more, but I could be here all week.

  4. Echosnare says:

I tend to carry groups on my hunter by chain md ing, ccing, interupts distracting mobs onto me to buy time etc etc. Normally though, even with a shit tank most groups are competent enough to clear any of the old heroics.

On my dk tank I tend not to mind shit dps because they won’t do enough dps to pull stuff off me (terribad gear). My main problem has actually been toc25 geared players who think they dont need to pay attention to omen. They’ll pull aggro tell me I’m horrible and bitch at me to leave. The great thing is I’ve run into one of these guys again (a ret pally) on echo and spent the entire run mding aoe packs onto him :D then reminding him to watch his aggro

  5. Gilanth says:

I agree the “afk” “brb” between every single pull is very, very annoying , I had one the other day that said ” afk 20 minutes” seriously wtf

  6. Hailphage says:

I’ve just recently dinged an 80, and have been using the Dungeon Finder to run some of the instances on Normal first. The single most annoying thing that keeps happening? Players that join in the Pug only to go “Oh whoops, thought this as a heroic” and quit the group (9 times out of 10 its the healer or tank) leaving us to wait for another 10 mins before picking up somebody else. ::sigh::

  7. Scx says:

I agree 90% of the dungeon finder pugs are very very bad, but luckily we can save repair bill money with fd and carry most groups relatively easy. Now with that being said if you really really want to raise your blood pressure to 200/130 then queue for lets say lower lvl dungeons on alts while lvling. I “luckily” have an alt that’s lvl 28 guess where I get put GNOMER. I am a patient guy, but one group went through eight people in two hours. I finally said screw it, but if you can actually get into some good groups in good instances, the dungeon finder tool is a great way to lvl alts. With 2 frost badges per daily heroic the more alts = more primordial saronite. You can almost get one saronite per week, per alt.

  8. Omogon says:

I guess that I have been incredibly lucky ( or I’m really tolerant ??) with the dungeon finder. In over 100 groups I have not had a REALLY dismal one yet. Some have been weird, some sadly funny but I think I’ve only had to FD once to avoid a wipe. I have had a couple of tanks who could not tank ……they just “said they were tanks to get groups faster”…..so the pug kicked them and we got another tank . I have had some absolutely great ones as well. I was in one a while back which I thought was going to go badly. It was in UP I think….anyhow …there were two NE Druids from the same realm with similar names, one male one female…one is supposed to be the tank but has about the same HP as me….the other is supposed to be dps. On the first pull the male runs in and I’m thinking…….”this will not be pretty” but he switches to Bear form and he bugger has more HO than god !!! The female switches into a boomkin and lets fly with that stormcloud thing they do…..I got off one volley LoL.

I could have put Omogon on follow for the rest of the instance….I think they could have 2 manned the place :D

  10. Darkbrew says:

After reading this I have to consider myself very, very lucky. I use it every day, and have my pug pet (reward for running with 100 random people). For the most part my groups have been great. The only time I’ve run into fail groups has been with Halls of Reflection.

I had one bad Pit of Saron run where the tank asked if everyone knew the fights and everyone said yes, and it turned out that only he and I did. We finished two of the boss fight with only the two of us left alive (he was a good tank). Even then we managed to clear, and get the Don’t Look Up achievement.

So far this tool has been awesome, but like they say these things tend to even out in the end. Maybe there are some bad pugs in my future.

  11. You can cross server ignore and you won’t be grouped with people on your ignore list.

  12. Omogon says:

Great info Awsome Mom. I didn’t know that :)

  13. Lakland says:

I once spent a PUG with AotV up the entire time because I could not stop taking Aggro off the Tank. At the end he cheerfully pointed out he had been levelling a weapon skill from zero!

  14. Echosnare says:

An entire instance in aotv *wince*

at least the new md is freaking awesome, and can make up for things a bit

  15. BMfool says:

I’ve mostly been using it to supplement guild runs and it’s nice. It’s really nice to just have the group join the que get some one and teleport to the dungeon. It also reduces stress for the leader who would have to find someone and hear wining when the person is not good or would be taking the same gear as so-and-so. Since it’s not hard for the guild to support one or two crappy puggers, I don’t have any bad stories but I believe it and it was entertaining to read you all’s. One thing that has screwed people up in my guild is if some one was doing a dungeon before our raid then invite people to the same group for the raid we get the option to teleport to dungeon which is not where the raid is, lol. But I think everyone gets that now.

  16. Tlord says:

    Eliteists:

My Guild is what you might call a “harcore” raiding guild. So when we join these Pugs for our frost emblems, we have a little competition. After each run we post the recount in guild chat to see who can have the highest % of dmg done after the Dungeon is cleared (sometimes just on bosses). Our latest record is a mage in our guild with 56% for a clear and 63% by yours truly on a Boss (Corehound in VH). Sounds like a bunch of Elitiest Jerks but really, We are just making a sad situation a little fun.

  17. Bozanimal says:

Last I read Recount doesn’t work quite right with cross-faction PUGs. Has this been fixed and I missed the memo?

  18. Tlord says:

    Bozanimal:

    Don’t Ruin Our Fun! :P

  19. Iceveiled says:

Perhaps you can be constructive and write the opposite of this article: Pugging Etiquette.

Regarding how everybody was doing crappy dps, keep in mind that recount is not working properly in cross realm pugs. I had a tank berate and insult me after a heroic Utgarde Keep run saying “600 dps at level 80? How is that even possible? Go fail more!”. However my recount was saying just a shade under 3k dps.

Then again, most tanks are assholes so I just shrugged it off.

  20. Kytz says:

Entered HoR, and tank immediately says, “I don’t think I can tank this.”

We wiped on the first pull, and I left.

  21. Tlord says:

    Regardless:

It’s not that we are making fun of the fact that we see the low dps and ours as always the highest. We join the group, do our job, at the end say “good run” and thats that. After all is said and done we post it in guild (wether it apparently be flawed at the moment) it is just something to cheer us up after our backs hurt from all the carrying. Just friendly competition between guildies, I’m not trying to put down the seemingly low dpsers but again I just want to state that we are not saying ” Your Fail!!” in these groups. Etiquette/Manners is something my guild idolizes and Putting down people who are lesser geared is frowned upon.

  22. quivering says:

i get those about 80% of the time. the prot warrior who clicked damage dealer so he could flex his 700dps, the 71 blood talent DK who never hits 1k, the shaman who BL on trash. or maybe the 1 pull at a time tank, or the healer that calls people noobs for dying to unavoidable damage, or the guy with quel delar still trying to get hilts, or the tank that marks and doesnt even attack his own priority targets (thank god i have a targetfocustarget macro!), or the rogue that tells me im fail because im not gemming armor pen.

but occasionally ill snag a chain pulling tank, or a togc geared mage, or a dual butcher dual wielding warrior that makes it go by so fast. ive even gotten less rabi accidentally in a pug, and by accidentally i mean i interrupt the first transformation out of habit, but we kill him in like 17 seconds before he has a chance to do it again.

  23. Eidotrope says:

Awesome Mom is right about the cross-server ignore. I noticed that it ignores players by a combination of their character name and server name, so it appears you can ignore the correct Haloftw and not the one on your server.

Some say “/ignore player-servername” works, so that’s worth trying if you can no longer right click the player in some way.

  24. Cartar says:

Yeah the tool is nice. I perosnally only try to only pug at most 2 from outside the guild. I did one yesterday all pugs. Pally tank/holy pally/dk/retpally and me on my hunter. It was old kingdom and none of them broke 2k dps the entire time. I was over 6k on all bosses. It was funny.

  25. pr0gr4m says:

OMG…this is exactly what happened to me last night interestingly enough in HoR. I kept pulling aggro off of the tank. The healer pulled aggro off the tank. The lesser DPS’ers pulled aggro off the tank. Eventually everyone was in a their own personal battle some something. To try and ease my pain I switch to AotV and simply use autoshot and Volley and STILL pull aggro. At the end my recount looked exactly like yours…although my dps wasn’t quite that high.

  26. Moipouf says:

I have experienced all of these, but I have come to find The Oculus one funny. One thing I’ve seen in almost every group is pushy healers! Why is it ALWAYS the healer who demands to go faster, go slower, use this strategy, tell people how to play their class, and just generally be rude? I also think people take advantage of the kick member tool. If someone gets DCed, they will get kicked immediately. I see no harm in waiting a few minutes. But overall I agree, the dungeon finder tool is certainly worth it despite these annoyances.

  27. Ridje says:

My problem has been the fact that due to a high Gearscore I end up seeing myself mostly in the ICC heroics and that too HHoR and trust me wen you want those two Frost Elbelms you dont want it to be HHoR…. Funny part was when once tank and healer overshot the first ICE barrier in HHOR (the part where you run from Arthas) and I ended up tanking the first set of adds…lol survived at 50 health and dint wipe…

  28. Arthemystia says:

    Only Pugoid I truly hate:
    - The tanks/healers that roll on my ArP. trinket in FoS for their offset. There are many of these.

    Only Pugoid I truly love:
    - Afk Tank. Twice I’ve talked my PuG groups into letting me tank once our tank is MIA for longer than a couple minutes.

  29. Bowya says:

I has a toc HC group on my healer with a DK tank that really was taking so much damage it was crazy. I managed to keep him up only just by using everything I had, he turned around at the end and said ” I’m such a good tank i don’t even need to be def capped” I checked his armory after and he had 260 def rating some people really are retarded. I don’t have a problem on my hunter though even with a awful tank as MD is insane right now.

Oh i got another funny 1 as well. On my pala healer a sword dropped with def raiting on it, so i was like can i need for OS they all said yes apart from a rogue who seemed to think that he needed def raiting and he needed it and got the item RAGE!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. Irishwebbdad says:

I had a pug group from the LFG tool for HoR in which there was a mage doing a little less than 2k dps(the other dps did even less, leaving me to pull 45% of the dps and an even larger percentage for the damage) that was giving all the orders for the group. In the end after countless wipes on the last section I couldn’t convince them that is wasn’t ok to fight behind the lich king, lol, really. We never finished and when all was said and done, even with about half of the damage coming from me and having never pulled aggro, I got the blame for being a hunter. WTF? Brought back nightmares of BC pug days.

  31. Yorigrim says:

I call Shenanigans on dps meters for heroics. You will always hit ridiculous numbers, Frost, and because there is a finite amount of damage that can be done in a heroic, there is no way to make up for someone who deals almost all the damage faster than you. I’ve had that happen to me hanging out on alts with better geared people, you can expect no less from any other under-geared person. Of course they could still suck, it’s just don’t know how you expect them to compete with you sucking up all the health of the mobs ;)

  32. Chrysanthia says:

I joined a PUG Halls of Lightning on my druid tank, and start pulling… when I pull the boss, I die, and notice I’ve gotten no healing. I ask why, and it seems the paladin who had signed as a healer didn’t want to heal, and expected someone else to be doing it. I then left. ;)

  33. Orcha of Bloodscalp (eu) says:

I must agree with Yorigrim; i did a random the other night with one good pala dps and the rest was low geared ppl. We were doing HoL and at the beginning my DPS was around 4k and then for some reason the pala decided to bail out. He was replaced by a poorly geared MM hunter and all of a sudden my dps jumps up to 4,9k without getting any new buffs. Seen several times that my DPS on heroics and on raids like VoA and OS increases when competition is low.

  34. darponz says:

lets see worst pug i was in was back in naxx 25(on my dk who i dispise now) and during the last guy in construct(who’s names escapes me) all the ranged dps stayed on the ledge and fired from there. of course polarity changes nad all wipe and they thought they did nothing wrong.

  35. dd says:

a pally with queldelar who rolls need on the hilt.

  36. dd says:

    oh and wins it

  37. Backspace says:

Two things, as a shaman healer I simply never run out of mana, why would you be against me helping out on dps to speed up the run?

Also I don’t know if you’ve read about this but Recount is totally broken cross servers. I was in a random heroic on my hunter when I was told to “learn2play” by a rogue who appeared to be doing 1.7k dps while I was doing 4k. I linked him my recount numbers, only to have him link totally a different recount even though they were set to the same boss fight. We checked this on two other bosses and the problem seems mainly to be that melee dps and ranged dps get drastically different numbers.

  38. Frostheim says:

Aye, I’m aware of the recount issues; however, it’s usually pretty easy to tell when people are grossly underperforming based on how long it takes for stuff to die :)

  39. Rayan says:

In some of the regular dungeons I’ve done on my alt, I’ve seen DK’s trying to roll on int/spell power gear. Not just rare plate gear either, but like, 2 handed green axes. I still dont understand this. I’ve put a lot of work into my hunter, and its hard for me to not say anything to the hunter rolling on that stam/strength axe… But overall, I’ve had pretty positive experiences. No worse than a normal pug, at least. Cept better cause you can vote people out^^

  40. Partycrasher says:

How about this one: You get a full group and we are all inside buffed up and ready to go. Tank runs in and pulls a huge wave of mobs. I MD and mage and i start aoe. Tanks looses aggro on all but one mob, because he’s aoe tanking ability wasn’t very good.

Or this one tanks runs in and pulls 2-3 packs and we start aoe. Tanks die because the healer couldn’t keep him up. They wipe i FD.

  41. Geckko says:

For the most part, I’ve had decent to good experiences using the LFG tool. Tonight, complete PUG in hVH, I ran into what must have been a Pugoid. ‘Twas a pally, signed up to dps whilst wearing tanking gear. My Recount scores topped him at 900dps, and while I’m not sure that those were accurate given the comments I see here, I suspect they weren’t too far off. The dear fellow spent more time trying to skin the dead dragons than helping kill them.

He did other charming things, too, such as refuse to buff anyone. We probably should have kicked him, but after we wiped on the second boss, every one but me and Pugoid Pally left the group.

With the second group, he seemed to have changed his tune slightly. He laid out a Fish Feast, everyone munched, we thanked him, and we got going. That was as good as it got. Still no buffs, still the skinning, still the crappy damage, and when a set of BoE tanking shoulders dropped, he rolled “Need” and won them. Don’t really know why he “needed” them. Apparently he was wearing them. /facepalm

  42. Hyperion says:

    I have 2 very funny experiences…

    1) I ran across the rare BM melee hunter. Gemed and enchanted with STR and STA. When i asked why, “Because you dont see many melee hunters and i want to be the first to raid with one.”

    2) I had a group with a Spell Pen and Spell power hunter. I didnt say anything to him, as much as i REALLY wanted to. At the end of the run he whispers me and asks “how did you do that much damage?” I replied, “www.warcrafthuntersunion.com plz go and learn.”

  43. ShackleSoul says:

I’ve been seeing the ‘pugoid’ problem from both sides. My hunter is geared, skilled and easily wiping the floor with most of the other DPS. But I have an alt, a newer 80, and while I know how to play her just fine she lacks in gear right now. You can imagine, then, how sick I am of constantly getting teamed with people that vastly outgear me. It makes me look like a huge scrub, I don’t WANT to make people drag me through content but, nine times in ten, that’s how the system handles me on that toon.
On the other hand I’m not so keen dragging others, but I try to keep an open mind because of my own experiances – true some are very stupid but a fair few are in my alts shoes and just trying to get better. Can’t really fault them because the system screws us both over.

    ~K.S

  44. Vartimus says:

I hate when shadow priests try to heal.
Me: Just to let you know, your in shadow spec.(He is the healer)
    Priest: I know.
    We wiped the entire night

  45. Almerin says:

Been a closet reader for quite a while, and thought I should contribute as well…
My Pugoid experience was watching the Recount and seeing that I am beating a MM Hunter in 3/5 T9 Gear and mostly 200-219 ILvl stuff, on a DK that’s horribly undergeared, but then I notice this: he isn’t even using SS, and when I ask him to put it on he refuses because he thought it was annoying to keep refreshing it, then I just said that Chimera Shot refreshes it, and he responds cleverly, “I know…”
After the pug i kindly /w’ered him go to WHU, and I am hoping he is doing a bit better now =)

  46. quivering says:

i scored a good run other day in gundrak. tank was geared out his hind quarters and it must have been boring healing him cuz the priest healer was mind flaying most pulls just to speed things up XD

  47. Bradagore says:

So far apart from the occasional random bad DPS (the mage on an amber drake who literally ran away with the last boss, disappearing into the distance shrieking “Tank it FFS” while leaving all the reds far behind) I’ve had good experiences so far. Last night I was random DPS for 4 mad Swedes from the same guild, pulling 3 trash packs at once in Utgarde Pinnacle (and handling them without breaking into a sweat) and, whilst the Valkyrie boss was doing her long spiel, clearing most of the way to the next boss and then going back for her.

  48. Ilapa says:

Dunno if you have it much on your servers but on european servers I have a real problem with tanks running in no marking and pulling everything,While I use assist by the time I fire my first arrow the tank has shifted targets. The pre-patch heroics are, lets face it,easy emblems but i’m fed up with tanks moaning at me to watch my aggro. The again I’m usually over aggroing them anyways :)

  49. frugner says:

i was dps pugging on my DK one day with my druid friend. we ended up in HHoR. he and i can can both tank but we let a pug do it. well after a very frustrating hour with a true bona-fide “Huntard” doing abyssmal dps, cant MD, and is wearing pvp gear, plus a undergeared tank for HHoR, i finally got fed up and switched to my hunter. we never finished! there just wasnt enough dps in the group, even after i start doing 3K+ dps! need i mention the huntard wasnt halving that? there was the time everyone left group while i was tanking and had ONE bad pull…

  50. VG says:

Sure you can get some freaky situations w/ pugs, but the best one was when I was H HoS w/ 3 guildies + we pugged this beast of druid healer. He kept telling us to pull them all whenever we entered a room, which was all well + good, but then when we were protecting Bran where the adds come down the steps, the healer at one point was standing full-force in the4 laser, yelling “LET THE TREE BURN!!”
Needless to say we never wiped

  51. Snoggi says:

The most annoying thing I’ve come across so far is self-appointed pros that will tell you how you should play the game. Last pug I was in, a guy linked a damage report that showed that his dps was around 5000+, and mine about 1600. Now, I now I’m bad, but when my auto-shot and normal pet attacks combined already exceed that number, then there’s something wrong with it.

The thing is, it’s a random group finder, that allows you a bigger pool of potential players. When you use it, you automatically accept that there will be some very poor players among them. If you don’t like it, then don’t use the tool. But the ‘I’m good and omg, they’re such noobs’ complaints are getting pretty old. They very often do the best THEY can and you’re not better people than they are. Complain a lot about them and you’re worse.

  52. Orchewer - Cenarion Circle says:

Not too long ago my friend and his girlfriend queued up for a random heroic. Well, the healer was using Mind Sear to heal and it could possibly work if he had a 8804273409827503958 gear score. But unfortunately he had bout 2k on WoW-heroes, Absolutely terrible. ||||| Another story, I joined a 25 man ICC Rep farming PUG and on the single target I out DPSed a hunter in full 245′s and 251′s (including some 264′s). He was survival and i was MM. So thank you for all the things and guides you have on your server. ||| Your guides also helped me when I was a little nublet, I was able to outdps a WHOLE raiding guild in blues and a couple heroic epics. ||||

  53. Orchewer - Cenarion Circle says:

Oh and another thing, sorry to double post. I know what you mean about the PvPers. Some guy was yelling at me for telling him to put on some PvE gear so i put on my PvP gear. Well I have a Relentless/Furious set. That put him and his deadly to rest.

  54. Farstrider Aliha says:

Lets see I think my first Pugoid was the Druid who rolled Need on a BOE Blue in H UK, a leather piece that in no way benefited him but could have helped a very under geared “I just dinged” 80 hunter in the group besides me. Says “I don’t want no pallies rollin on my shit!” only with less letters and punctuation ( please note our party make up was MM Hunter (me), BM Hunter, DPS Drood ( read idiot) Disc Priest and War tank). This Druid then proceeded to port out of the Dungeon and stayed there in group for 5 minutes as he went to IF, we assume hit the AH, and sent some sort of flirtatious MT.

Me: Um… hey… you coming back into the run?
Idiot: what u talkin bout huntard?
Me: You know the run you just fail ninja-d on a trash drop BOE Blue and we figured we’d wait to see if you were going to come back to finish this… for actual loot… and emblems…
    Idiot: Oh…
    Idiot has left group
    Me: gorram moron…
    Tank: I’m sorry guys
Healer: did she just say gorram?
Me: What for? [thinking please don't leave]
Tank: I think that guy was from my server…
    Me: Gank him later?
    Tank: Will do lets roll…

So we 4 maned the rest because… its freeking H UK. If you think Heroics are horrid to pug… ask my troll Ele shaman how he tanked SM Armory or healed RFK with a S priest and 3 warriors- none tank spec ( and a tauren using DAGGERS… wtf I know.)

Needless to say… it has it’s uses. When you get a good group you plow through things… and then you get conversation pieces. And… that pug is ugly I don’t care what you say. It scrapes its ass on the floor and sniffs it… when I get it all it will remind me of is that druid and every Pugoid out there. But I need emblems, no one on server is really queuing up and I refuse to pvp to pass the time. Suck it up and deal fellow Hunters… just another due to pay.

the thing i keep coming across in pugs, people waiting till the last boss, and everyone else rolling greed on all the items, and then they roll need for everything.

  56. Riilin - KT says:

One minor quibble with the afk/brb at the start thing. In my realm-group, DPSers are waiting 10-15min in the queue. So yeah, I’ve clicked ready when I really meant “I’m ready but damnit I need a minute for a drink” or whatever, because I’ve missed the readycheck going afk just that long.

  57. Rhinochaser says:

I started out kinda plesently surprised with the new randon finder, but lately I have been having more and more bad experiances. I have been using it to PUG the new instances for gear for my Warrior and my DK. I looked at the loot tables and made a list and went on about PUGing. Had the 2 handed axe from HPOS on my list for both toons. Got lucky and got it on my warrior after 3 or 4 tries. The Dk was not so lucky but after 14 days it dropped along with a healing trinket. The Prot pally tank in the group promptly needed on BOTH items and won them both and left the group. Apparently he is a prot, ret, holy Pally. I became quite angry over this incident and created a toon on his server just to go there and spam trade that he was a ninja. Nobody cared of course but hey.

Today I was doing reg. POS for a plate DPS belt and helm for my DK and they both dropped. Prot warrior and holy Pally both needed on the 1st drop (the belt) and I protested. The Shaman and hunter in the group also did until the warrior gave me the belt. Someone made a motion to boot them both from the group but it didnt fly.
On the last boss the Plate DPS helm dropped along with a healers cloak and the Holy Pally needed both and won them both. Again I protested and he said. Im off spec heals. And I said well you are here as heals so you shouldnt need on DPS gear. He left the group with his loot. Paladins are really a problem as the system lets them need on everything except cloth, leather, and mail. I also see that some servers NEED on the frozen orbs where my server greeds. So I wait to see how others roll on the orbs before I roll now.

Just some bad players with crap ethics out there. I plan to boot anyone in the future that needs on anything NOT main spec. without asking first and to leave if the group doesnt boot them. This doesnt help if they do it on the final boss though. I think this problem will get worse rather than better as these d-bags realize there are no consequenses for their actions.

  58. Ajjaxx says:

Man this is hilarious (though frighteningly accurate).

My favorite was getting into ToC and having the druid tank ask, “Who’s the tank?” After a moment of pause, we all say “you,” to which he responds that he’s a healer. We point out that we have a pally healer and he says, “Lol, whoops, listed as a tank by accident” and leaves.

  59. Snoggi says:

Well, the need/greed issue on Frozen Orbs can be solved easily. Custom just has to change to everyone Need instead of everyone Greed. The latter is just too easy to take advantage of. Personally, always wait until everyone has rolled. If only 1 has rolled Need, then I will do to, if it’s just to make sure they don’t get it. Afterwards, if I won, I’ll add it to my guild’s vault. That way, it’s sure to end up useful to someone.

  60. Sarissan says:

dk in pretty decent purples in HPoS doing 800 dps at his high point…after 5 min of me and my other guild mates yelling at him to leave kuz we couldnt vote kick he finally responded and said “do you guys know a good rotation?”

Also I’m still seeing pally tanks with spell power weapons

  61. Chimy says:

I’ve met a druid who didn’t feel he needed to be in tree form to heal. (major wtf)
I’ve met the above-mentioned, I don’t wanna heal though I listed as healadin.
I’ve met my biggest pet peeve, the ‘that’s a tanking x, you’re taking a tanking x away from the tank’ bitch party. (Not as my hunter, as my 75 dk in a regular instance for a str/stam ring)
I’ve had the tank bail scenario happen in anything that might be long. (BFD, Gnomer)
I’ve had a lot of bad experiences (more so, on alliance), but I still like the new lfg.

The only thing I’d like to say about your article, frost, is that you have to remember that you aren’t the average player. You’re the player that people ask how to play. I remember being a 900 dps 80 MM in mostly pvp gear when I found your site. Now that I’ve read, and I’ve upped my gear, I’m doing in the realm of 2800-3200dps, which is better, but still not where I want to be. We’re playing with a very wide age spectrum of people, and some feel that this is a game and they shouldn’t have to do any math or reading to know how to play reasonably well, and in some respects this makes sense. Blizzard gives us a massive spanning talent tree, a set of glyphs, and a boatload of vague attributes and expects us to know what to do with them. Can we really blame the folks that don’t quite get it? The only ones that really annoy me are the loot hogs and the whiners. Low dps isn’t the end of the world.

  62. Kylaella says:

At the beginning of the patch, and more often than not, I have had very good results. Recently however, the PUGs are horrible. I think it might be due to all the kids out for the holidays. I usually try to go in with at least one friend so the fail won’t be as likely. Usually when you find a great group, they want to keep it rolling through more. This has also taught me that my realm isn’t all as bad as a lot of people gripe about.

The worst was a DK tank in all blues in Old Kingdom. I was using MD helper on him. After using it on the first 2 mobs I get:

    Bad DK Tank: misdirection?
(I think he means am I casting it.)
    Kylaella: Sorry?
    (Nothing from the horrid DK.)
Kylaella: I’m sorry, but I didn’t understand what you meant by “misdirection?” Could you please explain?
Bad DK Tank: You keep spamming it in chat. Why?

This ended with an explanation of what MD is. That’s called a red flag. Wipe. DK leaves group cussing us out about being gear snobs. Leftovers snicker to each other and LFM ftw.

    Now for my revenge story:
Running HPoS with my guildie heals drood and 2 of his friends. We pug a pally. We all try for the acheivement with the first boss (11 stacks). I have to admit I didn’t fully understand the ach and failed it. He says “Silly hunter. Learn LOS.” I say nothing. I say nothing until after Ick. On the last putrid before Ick, I hit the pally with MD and lay into the putrid. Tank picks up shortly after and we kill Ick after. Before we moved onto the ramp to clear those groups I break silence with “I’ll MD and silence the far caster to the pally, er, tank.” He replies (>_>) .

  63. Rahmitn says:

What Chimy said: because the starting point described is my main toon right now. I don’t get much time to play, so I PvP because it’s quicker and commitment-less …and because I don’t want to have to bail on an instance suddenly (I have toddlers; wife does the day shift, I do the night shift). Which means that based on this post and comments, I’m the stereotypical SV huntard with virtually zero dungeon experience, PvP gear, and godonlyknowswhat DPS (frankly, I’m afraid to see what recount will report once I re-enable it).

It begs an interesting question, one that might make for a good article, Frost: where do you start at 80 if you haven’t been instancing all along? Or is it a lost cause, and you should just stick to fishing & cooking dailies? :) The best I can figure is to start doing lower-level dungeons (on Normal) to start working my way up through the emblem/gear trees …which should also help me build my dungeon abilities along the way (proper target/focus macros, etc).

Having said all this (and laid it out there for ridicule), I still agree: rofling at the folks bringing no skills, PvP gear, and/or low dps to a PUG can certainly be funny (as I’ve gotten a chuckle out of much of the inanity reported just in these comments). But I think the context of each player’s situation is something to be considered — not to excuse outright moronness, but to bear in mind that those who are merely inexperienced-but-eager-to-learn do exist.

  64. Mike says:

I would love to hear Hrist on on the Hunter party podcast.

  65. Beardew says:

As Rahmitn already stated, there’s a certain number of players that would like to do more but because of real life commitments they’re not able to.
I’m one of those, I don’t have many chances to go raiding, so I mostly stick to the HCs for emblem farming and then equipment upgrade.
I have many characters but mostly play with my druid tank and my hunter. I created my other alts mostly for fun and throu the years I’ve realized how good it is to know other classes, and how much I’ve learned about how to interact with them in PUGs.

If I have to be totally honest, I think there’s too many people lacking the flexibility to adapt to different situations, but most important is how people behave. Beeing rude is not a good thing in real life nor in this wonderful game. Yes guys, this is a game, and a social game!!! This mean socialize while playing!!!!
I’m sure we all group up and go HCs (or raiding for those who can) with people we really like and that we’ve met in the game, while playing.

I’ve tryed some random raids in the past but I got fed up pretty soon by needers, blamers and whiners. I’m in a very small social guild atm, and we’re growing gathering people that would actually like to have fun, regardless what your average item level is, and what your DPS is. We’re growing togheter as players, we’re learning from our mistakes and doing better and better. We’re all getting better gear and we may be soon ready to go raiding. But we’ll do it togheter for fun, nothing else than fun, because the most important thing to us is respecting each other as persons.
I’m one of those that like to learn from more experienced players, so I’m always looking around on the internet (btw, great web site guys) and I will always accept suggestions, but at the same time I don’t use to make comments on people’s playing style or class knowledge, even with guildies cause I don’t like the idea of hurting somebody’s feeling. If they ask me for suggestions I’ll be more that happy to share what I know.

I’ve seen every kind of player that has already been described in this topic and believe me, it doesn’t necessarily depends on the person’s age. I’ve seen 13 years old kids beeing much less childy that 36 years old men.

I like the new LFG tool a lot, it gave me a chance to meet a lot of people and to get much better equipment. My hunter is still a lvl74, but my druid tank stays most of the time above the 2.5-3k DPS, it has 38k unbuffed HP, 31k unbuffed armor and generates enough threat to keep the aggro on a lot of trash mobs at the same time, giving the DPSers the chance to do their best. I’ve been running with people generating 5-6k DPS and still fully getting the kind attentions of trash mobs and bosses. Of course I also had bad experiences, but it’s simply part of the game and I accept it.

I’m sorry for the long post, but I like talking and discussing a lot so below you’ll find my conclusions. If you want, please let me know what you think.

I find myself more and more often making the same question to PUG players: “When did WoW stop beeing a game and became something else?”.

  66. Oyless says:

Someone might have said this already but one of the things that I’ve started seeing recently in my Cross-Realm Pugging is AFK Badges or Death Badges as I call them. When a Pugoid becomes group leader, which means they can NOT be kicked (which I personally think is STUPID!!!), and he/she sees that the group can handle the instance without him/her. That Pug will just go AFK or Die and not come back, let the rest of the group finish the instance to get the badges then leave. I’ve started getting the group to disband when this happens. I’m usually running with my guildies so we can get in quicker, so its easy to start a new, its jus frustrating.

  67. Knurl says:

I once had a druid healer go AFK for ten minutes, EVERY PULL!!!!! He managed to convienently do this during the space of time after combat that you can’t kick someone and would show up again with my finger on the button…..But that’s not the half of it, PuGing on my healer priest I got a hunter who decided the tank was going to slow so she speed us up by pulling a grand total of 5 seconds after we killed the last group. Now this is level 20-ish stuff in Wailing Caverns, tank kinda sucked so I had to waste most of my mana to keep us all alive. we wiped at least 5 times because I couldn’t type “healer oom” fast enough, and even when I did get it off she magicaly lost the ability to read!
