I recently realized that the WHU passed its one year anniversary a little while ago. So I thought this would be a nice time to check in with you guys once again and see what you’d like to see from the WHU.
Let’s cover a few ideas and random thoughts:
- New Years List: I seem to have some vague recollection of writing a WHU new years list of stuff I wanted to get to, but after looking for several minutes (perhaps not a conclusive effort, admittedly) I didn’t find the post. So no inspiration on that front, which is too bad since I figure there’d be plenty of stuff there I’d forgotten about.
- PVP Guides: I know a lot of people want WHU PVP guides, and I still get emails about this fairly often. I don’t PVP often enough or hardcore enough to be anything of an expert on PVP. I did post looking for a pvp writer at one point, but was unable to find anyone who met the two qualifications: high arena ranking (proving pvp skills) and able to write. I got a couple of emails from people who suggested that ability to write wasn’t necessary and that I could just re-write the guides. I think I’d kill someone trying to translate that much illiterate leet-speak.
- Webcomic: looks like this one is going to happen. I’ve heard from several illustrators now and have to decide between very different styles. But hopefully this’ll be a weekly feature soon. I know some people were concerned that this isn’t what the WHU is all about, or that it will detract from more important hunter educational posts. I have to admit that made me chuckle a bit: maybe one fifth of WHU posts are at all informational. Most are philosophical ramblings or random stories. I figure the WHU is about education and entertainment both.
- Forums: We broached this topic once before. I was a bit leery of the idea of having WHU forums, and general opinion of those responding was that you didn’t want them either. However, I’ve been getting increasing requests for this so I thought I’d raise the issue again. The upside is it’d be a place to chat with other hunters, get advice, etc. A community thing. The downside is that forums bring out the worst in some people. A small percentage sure, but that small percentage is pretty horrible, and I dread creating something that becomes remotely like the WoW forums. Also, if we made forums, I would not frequent them often at all – it would not be an all-access pass to Frostheim’s brain

- Podcast: So the Hunting Party Podcast is not something that was remotely planned; it just kind of happened. What do you guys think? Worthwhile use of time and blog space? Too long, boring, and generally pointless? I know the majority of the WHU readers don’t listen to the podcast, and I’m curious why that is.
- Moar Guides! I should, of course, point out that if there’s a specific guide that you want to see that isn’t here, it’s very likely that I simply haven’t thought of it. Let me know if there’s something you’d like to see!
- In-Game Events: The Level 1 Dwarven Hunter raid on Hogger and Ysondre was wildly successful and great big fun. Should we do more of those?
So, that’s about all I have floating in my brain at the moment. Is there anything else you’d like to see? Any parts of the WHU that you’d like to see more of? Things you’d rather see less of? Crazy ideas I haven’t even thought of?
Please take a moment and post and let us know what we should be doing!
I suspect I’m not alone here, I’m a hunter that levelled as BM then switched to SV. I’m now all ilvl 245 geared and are toying with the idea of switching to MM for moar dps, but are worried that I need to change my gear and play style so much that I won’t be an effective SV or MM Raider for a while. Maybe a guide, or even a post on key points to switching would be useful?
For instance, my problem is, I’ve used the spreadsheet, and changed my talents over to your suggested MM spec and lost loads of DPS and can’t work out why?
With the new patch out soon, ideally I’d like to be ok with MM before then, but able to play SV if I’m not, is that possible with one set of gear?
I would love to see Boss guides for Hunters, that would be very beneficial. Even the odd Hunter tip like the jump shot vid was really helpful. I never had to jump shot before (rolled my hunter during BC), but now that I know how, kiting has become a hobby
In game events are definitely a must. Whats more fun than doing a raid with 90 other randoms hunters? These type of things make coming back and playing the game that much more fun. And then reading about it in your post the next day that much better.

No forums – it would not bring a whole lot more to the table (and not something undone in a thousand other places anyway) and would bring in a host of other problems. Stick with the blogs, guides and videos – those are all awesome.
Frostheim,
I don’t post on websites as a general rule (except my guild site) but you site is truly an inspiration to all hunters out there, and has made me break this rule twice now. The content and the accuracy are pure awesomesauce. When I get whispers on my server from other hunters for gear choices and general tips, the first thing I tell them to do is to get a pen. When they have one, I simply tell them http://www.warcrafthuntersunion.com. Almost always, I get a whisper back within a few days with comments like “OMG, that site you gave me is awesome!” or “I wish there was a site that good for my other chars.” I am sure I am not the only hunter to be spreading the “gospel of Frostheim” either.
You mentioned a few topics that you are considering and as a avid follower of WHU, I thought I would chunk in my 2 pence worth.
PvP: I don’t PvP either. Typical PvP for me is… Where are they? Why am I dazed? Why can’t I drop any traps? Oh, I’m dead… hummmm…
Webcomic: Looking forward to it!
Forums: Sigh… Alas, I agree with you. Forums are not the best for accurate information and usually just evolve into a few hundred people all with differing opinions arguing their case with very little evidence to support their claims. When people read your guides, they are sure as can be that you have studied, tested, reviewed, tested more and evaluated the information to provide accurate and informative information that can be trusted. The opinions of hundreds of people who “know differently” wouldn’t help, but I feel just confuse your dilute your work. The “comments” sections on your site provides a stage for people to air their views if they have any.
I do see a fair few people asking you for help in the comments section if their DPS is low for some strange reason and they can’t figure out why. Maybe to keep the comments clear of these sort of distractions, an “Ask Frost” section would help. I can understand that you wouldn’t have time to answer all of these questions, but there are a lot of hunters out here that I am sure would be happy to make a few suggestions to those people, but I do find it strange that they can’t find most, if not all of the answers on your site somewhere (maybe they just need to look harder).
Podcasts: I really enjoy the podcasts and it’s great to hear people talk with such passion about the best class in the game! I listen while at work and a few episodes ago someone asked how to get better DPS as a BM. Your reply was slow in it’s build till you answered “respec to MM.” I was then asked “what’s so funny?” I was laughing out loud, and after trying to explain it, all I had were confused looks… Please keep them going, the up and coming patch details and guests are great. The information you get from these is invaluable and to have insights from pro gamers on the show is great too.
Moar Guides: I have read every one of your guides and tbh, I can’t think of a single thing that is missing. I am sure others will suggest some, but almost everything needed is right there on one page.
In-Game Events: I am sorry to say that I missed the last one as I am on an EU server, and after seeing the fun you had from the last run, I really wish I had come. Next time I will be. So, should you do more of these? DEFFINATLY!
As I said, I don’t post on the web as a rule, but your site has given me so much information and above all enjoyment, that I felt compelled to put pen to paper (fingers to keys) and post you my inane ramblings. I am serious when I say that WHU is without a doubt the best hunter resource on the web. Please find the time ( and I know how time consuming these things can be) to keep up the great work. Now… If only I could find a site this good for my Druid tank…

I agree with Scott G. There are plenty of forums out there already. My experience is that the more successful ones are fairly well monitored which means a lot of work for somebody. IMO …not worth the trouble.
The Pod cast is fine if you have lots of time to listen to it. Personally, I prefer to read a blog than listen to a podcast.
I think the comic is a great idea…probably because I love comics
I find that your guides are very good and very useful. The same goes for the guest guides and articles. I am sometimes able to “out dps” guys with better gear than me and I believe that it’s mostly due to what I have learned here. Somebody mentioned “boss guides” There are a number of them on the “Out DPS” site which is listed here.
Hunter Events. The Level 1 Hunter Raid was one of the all time highlights of my time in WoW
I’m just not sure how you could ever top it ! I think that such things are great fun, but they should be “EVENTS” in other words, they don’t happen very often and are unique; otherwise they cease to be memorable.
My lvl 2 (almost 3) hunter is hanging out in the Stonefire Tavern waiting for the next one. The trouble is ….he’ll probably be a hopeless drunk by the time it rolls around
I also agree with Scott and the other posters: please don’t introduce forums. I love the idea of the comic though!
Unfortunately I won’t be able to take part in the hunter events (EU-Server)… how ’bout founding a European WHU?
Another no vote on the forums. The comments section is already a de facto forum.
I, like Zeea, very rarely post on blogs, but I figured i’d help shape this into an even more awesome hunter site
New Years List: You did write one, and most of the things on it have been done! http://www.warcrafthuntersunion.com/2009/06/what-next/
PVP Guides: While it would be nice to find a guest blogger for PVP, I rarely find myself caring much about it. Since you’re branching out into so many parts of huntering, though, why not if you can find someone? If not, don’t worry about it too much.
Webcomic: Should be awesome
You’ll never beat out Flintlocke’s Guide to Azeroth, but Hunter Webcomic = awesomesauce.
Forums: Not needed. They generally turn into useless banter. The current format promotes debate over topics as brought up by you, and works very well
Podcast: Listened to the first couple, need to listen to the last 2 still, but love it. Good to have in the background as I’m browsing around the site.
Moar Guides! Moar guides are always good, if you can find the topics to create them on. I’ve mentioned once before how our wonderful departed BRK was doing a ‘Baby Hunter’ series, in which he described the usefulness and got you using each spell effectively right away as you got it, slowly going through the levels. He demonstrated how to jump-shot and kite mobs from 1-10 rather than melee-ing. Would love to see a series like this if you have the time, to form confident, competent hunters right from level 1!
In-Game Events: Missed the raid
But LOVED the follow-up video! Looked amazing! You’ve got great cinematography skills using the limited resources you have. Would like to see more of these, and maybe moar music videos?
I, and everyone else here, understand that doing all these things is incredibly time consuming. So please only do what you have the time for! Don’t let the blog become more of a chore than a hobby!
Keep up the awesomesauce!
they all seem like good ideas to me. everything has the potential for good, and for bad, it’s all a matter of what you decide to do with it.
my one question about the comic is ; are you going to do horde an alliance equally? because that could be hysterically funny.
Please don’t introduce forums.
One of the main reasons why we come here and love your blog so much is that you know what you’re talking about and you update your content. This is something that a standard Google search can’t do for you because of all of the bad information online.
I’d like two things especially, from your list.
Guides.. I’ll read anything you come up with.
In-game events. I would like to have a toon on your server if for only this reason. Maybe with the cross-server pug functionality, this will be an option. A lot of us have alts.. so, maybe we can put together a WHU raid night.
Also, If you want me to translate the leet speak on a PVP article prior to your getting your hands on it, I’d be happy to do so.
Please, Please Frost put up some boss fight videos, Uld, ToC, ToGC, from a hunters standpoint. PVP guides, thats something you gotta kinda learn on your own imo.
Webcomic could care less. Forums definitely not. Podcasts can be informative and good
for passing time at work but they can also be long and drawn out. Short and simple.
Guides for all the instances and dungeons would be nice, AQ40/20, SSC, Black Temple,
Mount Hyjal, because Ive seen 20 level 80′s nicely geared, go into Black Temple and not
clear it because they didnt know the fights. In-game events DEFINITELY.
Like others, I don’t see where a forum would be an addition. Just say no to it.
I very much enjoy the guides and get much from them. I herald your site often. Your site is well organized and straightforward. I can get clear, helpful answers. Should I need to seek more, I am confident you would respond.
I know I’ve only scratched the surface of all the material you have, though I’ve read tons of it. (I haven’t found time for the podcasts but that doesn’t lower their value).
My PvP interest is severely limited. If you add it I’ll read it and may do more but I don’t miss it.
The recent lvl 1 hunter event (I missed it) is a spectacular idea. Even my wife – a ret pally who won’t roll a hunter – loved the video and was sorry she missed it. I don’t want it to get old but, however, more of those runs would be fantastic!
Above all, I like the attitudes of those who write here. I see none of the arrogance or pompous attitudes I’ve seen elsewhere.
I love the pod cast, getting to heard from some of the world most notable hunters is amazing, especially the quadriplegic hunter. Topic liek this are boring to read through and much more interesting to hear the persons thoughts and idea formt hier own mouths. So major yes for pod casts.
Your collaborative hunter podcast is excellent; and drives me to your blogs for additional info and reading all the time. You guys are doing a great job.
Regarding pvp, I would advise you to advertise on arenajunkies, because some of those people really know their stuff. Webcomics and forums, I can do without.
The podcast is amazing and I wish you did it more often, even if its just you three guys talking about whatever. The in game events look pretty fun, just from an outsiders pov.
Frost, i think you are doing awesome:D
I love your random “Frost-goggles” posts, and your guides, and your videos and your….:D I hope you get the picture:D
I think that this site is an awesome reference to me (even though my main is a healidin) because it reveals nuances of the game that i had not appreciated before. It is amazing to see fights from another perspective, and to be privy to the inner workings of a hunter’s mind:D
I would say.. keep on with the good work and keep the hunter love flowing:D
Forums: I’ve moderated internet forums. Take it from someone who has tried to maintain them…they won’t be worth it. I realize that people love the WHU, and not without reason, but there’s ample hunter-related forums in cyberspace for them to frequent if they wish (Elitist Jerks among them, and probably the most respected of the bunch).
Webcomics: Always a good time. Looking forward to them.
The Podcast: Is awesome. But looooong. I think the length turns off many. Otherwise, it’s win, and I honestly see no reason to change it, even if the numbers who listen to it are fewer than normal.
Wish List: An Arth cameo on the podcast?
Joking, but I really have no wishes. The WHU is a better site than I can fathom for huntering as it is. Cheers on its birthday!
i guess ill throw my 2 copper in on this
*PVP Guides: i think this would be nice to make the site more well rounded, but obviously its dependant on finding a knowledgeable, experienced, and well written person to lead it.
*Webcomic: i love this idea, though i think it would be cool to let users submit them as well as having them professionally done.
*Forums: bad idea imo. this requires moderation, and if places like wow forums or mmo champ forums are any indicator, its a festering pot of ignorance and trolls. more trouble than its worth.
*Podcast: personally i love them. hearing you talk about things, i catch things that i dont read in posts.
*Moar Guides: obviously would be a good idea. i am honestly surprised at so many wanting hunter specific boss guides, i dont find that many uses. use tranq shot on icehowl. stuff like frost trap and aimed shot in faction champs. maybe something like gluth were a hunter is really flexing, but for the most part, i cant think of much to put here. a guide i would like to see, tho, is a current patch gear guide, specifically weapons (not so much ranged but 1 2H vs 2 1H) and trinkets. other pieces are usually easy to figure out with EAP, but sometimes trinks and weapons can be a little harder.
*In-Game Events: i loved it, and will attend any and all events organized i can. it was boss.
ill say the same thing i did last time tho, i appreciate all the work and effort you put in it but please dont let us wear you out. id rather have 1 post a week and have you stay refreshed and having fun than 7 posts a week and you burnt out.
No forums there are plenty out there already and it would just clutter the site.
As far as guides go I would love to see a updated gear guide with regards to which gear to hunt down from where, similar to what you have now but updated to include which emblem gear to buy etc.
I do listen to the podcasts but do think they should be at a hour max.
Do you mean this NYE list?
http://www.warcrafthuntersunion.com/2009/01/happy-new-year-whu/
My favorite part of that is “I don’t see why anyone would spec as SV” hehe, times change eh?
I vote for boss-specific strategy guides (Pike had a good series for Naxx, would love to see a Frost-eye view of the more recent raids).
No forums, I think it would take the focus from the blog.
I missed the lvl1 raid, would love to have more shots at it.
I don’t pvp, so don’t care if there’s any pvp posts here.
yea forums bad and everything else is good but i would really like to see is a pvp guide cause i love to pvp now and then pissing off people by killing them over and over and over is fun to me lolbut my dps in pvp gear sucks so would like to help in that department and also a thought maybe a guide on wuts the best current gear for wut specs since most of the gear atm has armor pen yet sv build u dont stack it and even in mm some dont stack it so really would like to see something on wuts pieces r better and on a side note is the tier 2 bounse worth passing say bigger upgrades over i know not related to this post but still would like some feed bak lol
I agree with the many points on the forums – it has “bad idea” written all over it.
As for the podcasts, I absolutely love them! Mindless grinding isn’t so bad anymore since I have the podcasts to keep me interested. Because of them I also now read Euripides’ and Darkbrew’s blog as well. I guess lots of others like having them be an hour, but for me they could be as long as you guys like!
Thanks for everything you do with the site and can’t wait for the webcomic!
Well the WHU has produced some seriously awesome content since its start; and has raised Huntering to new a level with the Pet tanking series. (Hats off to Witwicky! Oh and Arth). I seriously cannot think of anything that you guys can add to you repertoire that will be beneficial to the site.
Note: Out DPS does PvP and hunter specific guides to bosses…Link across to their guides? also note that having hunter specific guides are pointless if you can’t implement them with your own raid group strategy (point taken from Out DPS).
Perhaps its time to update the enchant guides to include the Head; Leg; Shoulder and belt enhancements. These have been covered in comments but should be included in the main guide…so the information comes from an Authoritive figure. Also link the profession enhancements in that guide for completeness.
Other than that; your blogs are entertaining; a pity about voice chat…slowing down the random Hrist in raid hate screen caps. Haven’t been many since Ulduar. Those were always good for a chuckle.
Keep the blogs coming for some WoW-centric humor…main reason I now read this blog daily as I’ve pretty much out grown the guides.
Woah! I LOVE the podcasts. A few hunter mates and I on Saurfang listen to them each week, usually in the background and chat about them in the N Dal Bank. Please don’t take those away, as they are packed with info, and just generally amusing.
Also, more WHU events would be awesome. Thanks Frost!
Mensan of Saurfang
Oh yeah! Congratulation’s on one year.
Yeah i would dump the idea of a forum to many people have to much to bitch about and no one wants to spends hours sifting through the crap to find out there might be a answer. I would love to see more raids perhaps on a friday or saturday realm time that way us aussies can have a go too !, cause if it is the weekend i dont care what time i will be there. I real enjoy listening to the podcast and have learned a bit from them too and its always interesting to get someone elses perspective on things. I would suggest to keep up what your doing it all seems great and I am sure all the hunters who come here appreciate too !.Keep the awesomesauce coming !
* PVP Guides: I don’t PVP myself so not bothered. If you can’t find anyone else (owing to your own lack of PVPing) to do articles I wouldn’t worry about it.
Please please please organise more of these. Having an event once every month or 2 I think would be fantastic.
* Webcomic: oh great, ANOTHER webcomic I’m going to have to keep up with.
* Forums: I love forums for interacting but I agree with everyone here and say you don’t need them. The comments section allows ample enough discussion and helps keeps things organised and specific to the topic.
* Podcast: These are good but unfortunately I often don’t have the time to sit down and listen to them fully and I suspect others may have the same problem. Still do them though but maybe watch the length or try and break them up a bit.
* Moar Guides! The guides you have now are fantastic – I can’t think of anything else specifically you could do more on, apart from the popular suggestion of boss fights and the like.
* In-Game Events: The raid the other week was AWESOME!
Heya Frost,
My opinions: Pvp guide would be nice, i just dual spec’d to MM for pvp (its something to do between dailies and raids), and i would like a little bit on that =).
Cant wait for the webcomic =).
/agree on the forum issue, i’d rather not have morons starting flame wars all over my favorite hunter site =(.
Podcast: Never really got around to downloading/listening to them lol =p. one of those things where you tell yourself “Yeah, ill do it in a few minutes” and never do.
The guides? keep doing what you’re doing =).
In-game events would be kickass. i missed the lvl 1 hunter raid, unfortunately, but it looked like alot of fun =).

Long-time Reader, Yet this is my first comment ;D
Hey Frost,
Still regularly reading your site and referring other hunters to it, I’ll give my 2 cents
PVP – always a help, I’m not a big PVPer but any tips would be good.
Webcomic – noice!
forums – not so much, happy to leave comments on stories, but I think we would end up with flaming huntards rather than due payers.
Podcast – have got into them, but you’d need to offer something different and entertaining as I am still a big fan of the Instance and haven’t found anything WOW related similar in info and entertainment.
Guides – love them, really helpful by all means keep them coming.
In game events – may not work for me being an Aussie player but they sound like fun.
Keep up the fantastic work, this is my number 1 hunter site!!!
your site’s always one of the first i refer to when i have questions.
PVP – some of this would be good. i’ve been getting more and more PVP time since the new patch isn’t out yet. more info on this would be appreciated.
Forums – agree that this is a huge can of worms. likely wouldn’t frequent it if created.
Podcast – i actually listen to you on the OutDPS podcast which i find very informative.
Guides – always appreciated, and a more raid-centric set of guides would likely prove useful.
In-game Events – i live in asia so likely wouldn’t be able to participate. photos of these events would be nice to have tho.
Cheers!

No forums and I don’t pvp (cause I am 2 suk 11 at it) so there’s my vote on those two. I suspect that once 3.3 and then Cataclysm go hot you’re gonna have plenty to talk about. I’ll be following closely to see you recommendations on spec tweaks and revised huntering strategies. So if I can recommend anything it’s continued vigilance on upcoming content and how it’s going to affect us. Side note: Have you posted anything regarding suggested raid consumables? I think I’m using the wrong stickies and chewies for max dps.
Forums – Another no-vote for the forums. The whole reason your site is so awsomesause is that you research and keep the guides up to date. With a forum you will soon end up with a lot of un-moderated, un-researched and out-of-date stuff that never gets cleared, and they do tend to be Troll magnets (not my Darkspear friends I may add). If you must have a forum and you can’t moderate it yourself, pick a few of your trusted dues-payers and give them some moderating rights.
Guides – A big vote from me for the Boss-guides-from-a-hunter’s-perspective. Maybe also a guide to other recommended hunter websites. Rather than the simple list you already have, something along the lines of : “If you want fun Hunter RP stories WHU recommends Pikestaff’s site….If you want to know everything about pets WHU recommends Petopia….if you want to know about hunter PvP WHU recommends OutDPS….etc., etc.”
PvP Guide – I’m another one from the school of “what the feck is going on….. oh, I’m dead again” so unless you can find someone who articulates their skills and experiences as well as you do, I’d suggest skipping this one.
Webcomic – Not for me, but looking at the comments it seems to be popular.
One guide I would like to see would be a mount boss guide for soloing all the bosses that drop mounts. I know the last time I tried, some of the bosses in zul grub were difficult, but that was when I was in t7.5 and no t5. So guides for places like that might not be needed, but some of the others like the kara boss, if its do able, might be good, even if its just which ones they are and the fastest way in.
One leet addition could be youtube hosted videos of you rambling about stuff wee bit like Lore/Aliena do on the Tankspot website…I know seeing Aliena in that Nelf/Belf get-up is weird and seeing Lore with his Frodian antiques is weirder…but i am assuming to put faces to the voices is always fun and an entertaining act in itself.
PvP’ing could be a big addition to this website. I know you are short of talent in that aspect( as in you dont have resources at your disposal who can write authoritatively on hunter-PvP) but trust me, many hunters out there in Azeroth have PvP ambitions and I can imagine the hunter in you all always grins slyly when you have successfully kited a DK or a warrior to his/her grave. Having said that Hunter PvP has enormous scope for literature given the various roles/comps that hunters can fit into right now. We got the Beast cleave with elemental Shaman(quite popular right now after the recent MLG,Anaheim), the traditional hard hitting and kiting MM hunter, and the master trapper survival hunter. Also having those recorded PvP video links posted on the site with accurate description of strategies used in the video will be awesomesauce
….just my 2 cents.
Meta-Analysis of Responses:
Forums – 19 against; 1 for
…I think we have at least one consensus.
Also, Bindura is my new favorite WHUer…for the day, at least. And I tried to get a comment from Witwicky concerning his thoughts on the direction of the WHU. But he’s vacationing in Stranglethorn, and only texted me some pics of Blood Elf models from the secret STV nude beach. I can only assume that means he wants to run Sunwell in the near future.
A huge yes vote for the podcasts. I love those hunting party podcast more than The Instance and Wowinsider show. Keep them coming.
OK, the rundown,
1. Forums, bad
2. PVP, if one can find an articulate toon stomper, (I do LOVE spanking DKs!!)
3. Webcomic Good
4. Podcasts, great, (when I have time to see em)
5. Moar Guides, yup yup yup yup
6. In Game Events, Lvl 1 Dwarf Hunter raid, was one of the best times I EVER HAD playing WOW. I still pick at my guildies for not comming and have the Vids posted on our guild site. So the occational event would be great but should be few and far in between to keep em special!
My 2 cents
Roarithaar
If, by any chance, u were completely bored and had an afternoon off, id really like to see the BEST gear for Surv, MM, and BM, and i mean Frosts wishlist to UBER DPS!!!!
I have been trying to do something like this for myself. Unfortunately im a good ol fashioned knuckle dragger. I had to send my laptop to my nephew to get him to install my addons, let alone try to figure out the spreadsheets i keep reading about.
If u could do that, (especially for Survival spec) im sure a lot of ppl would be appreciative!
