I get a strange number of questions about my UI, including many requests asking to know what UI addon I use in my videos. I figure it’s about time to address it. This is what my UI looks like:

For those that are unaware, the is the default UI – no addon. I just use the UI scaling feature to shrink the buttons down to give me a slightly larger field of view.
You can do this by going to your video settings (under resolution) and check the “Use UI Scale” box, and the move the slider to wherever you want it.

In general, I prefer to use as few addons as I can get away with. They’re a pain in the ass to update after major patches and they suck up computer resources.
I’ve seen some truly gorgeous UI setups out there, but ultimately I can see everything I need to see on my screen and my main abilities are all keybound, so changing my UI isn’t really going to improve my performance.
Mind you I have no objection to UI addons – some people love them, and for other classes I’m told they’re downright essential. But for me it’s just another addon to update.

Nice to see someone else who doesn’t feel the need to modify the UI beyond all recognition! I use many addons, but mostly for little things (all in one bags for instance) or important things (DBM, Vuhdo) but i don’t really alter the look of the game, I figure it’s a decent interface and quite usable.
And I spent most of the 90s working as an interface designer 0.o
Sure, the default UI in WoW is very clean. But from a raid-leader perspective it’s just horrible, and having my unit frames up in the corner results in 50% of the raid looking in the top left corner instead of on my raid.
You make me feel SO much better about my UI:

Fool´s joke? Or you got rid of PA, Recount, Omen and DBM just to be able to write this article :p
yall seriously dont wanna see my ui. i love it (though im always trying to better it). stuff like coolline, msbt, quartz, xperl, skinner, bt4, chinchilla etc etc. i guess it really varies from playstyle to playstyle
and yes, updating is a pain, but clients (like curse’s) make it easier.
at least you have Prat =)
nUI+ all day it takes a little memory but it does what several add-ons do and, I have less to update come patch time. Though I think Blizz could update with out pwning our add-ons every time; there is a nUI for PTR so, when it comes out my update is tested and ready to run patch day no waiting for whoever to update it. The default ui is gigantic even scaled it covers too much. I used to click my toolbars by accident and destroy my moves in a fight later trying to figure what I lost… Now that never happens because my toolbars are not in field where I am trying to target the Rouge or Pali who is circling me.
Deep: of course I still use PA, Recount, Oment, and DBM. I use as few addons as I can get away with — but if the addon will increase my raid performance, then I use it
Finally someone else who uses the default UI!
I commend you frost
Oh thank you so much Frostheim! I was wonder how i could adjust my UI so i could have more space to see, but not have to mess around with carbonite and some of the other weird stuff i see people using. It’s probably dumb that i’ve been playing for just about a year now and had no idea how to do that. i just use QH, bagnon, Skada (for my dps meter) and gatherer. I have healbot but i leave it turned off unless I’m running with my shaman, and of course DBM, which i nearly cried when i realized there was an addon that would tell you when a boss was targeting you with attacks…. i need to look this stuff up more often lol -blush- ty so much for explaining that for us again, i am so so grateful!
I use this one:

Its kinda like the original, but a little cleaner and a bit more stylish.
Its from this guy

Hooray, another default UIer! I cop a lot of flak in my guild for not liking addons
I always wondered why anyone would stick with the default UI. Obviously Frost takes care of his business very well with it, and many others do as well, but with literally thousands of mods and millions of UI combinations, there’s at least one out there that will do something that you’ll like. The learning curve involved with some is daunting, but I always saw it as translating to a more smooth play experience in the long run.
Not trying to give anyone flak, or saying that default UI is inferior. If it does what you need it to, it’s not worse than any other. But I’ve always been of the mind that a 15-minute search on Curse, wowinterface, or another similar site will have something for everyone.
not really a bash but your UI is pretty lame you should take more pride in it.
i find a UI, and mods, are determined by many factors ranging from personal preference to computer specs. i really like mine but it drives some folks crazy (mainly the fact i have 2 chat frames, one on black background for all guild, party, raid, whispers etc, and one above for global channels and emotes etc)

as it is now, i want to change xperl as my frames (my raid frames is where the orange box is) and im not sold completely on iceHUD as my HP/MP bars. other than that, i like it.
Lol’d at your pet’s name, quiv.
Personally, the one big thing I love about keeping my UI simple is being able to log on at say a friends house and not having to move spells etc around
If anyone is interested in a fancy UI designed specifically for hunters, and downloadable, take a look at this one: http://huntsmanslodge.com/4238/the-garwulf-ui-v-3-0.htm
I also raid the the default UI…no scaling…only picked up Power Aura’s last week. I believe Frost and I might be gimping our dps a bit because of the reactive nature of “Powa”. Powa has helped my survivability and is great to show when a trinket procs but because I’m reacting to a Chimera etc being ready I feel that I am losing dps. I might look up Kripparrian’s UI…but it looks too different I’ll probably hate it. I also have never needed DBM; I found I can raid adequately with out it. Blizz’s giant txt warning/a roar/cast is usually enough of a warning.
If I ever start losing to my guild’s other hunters for damage done on a regular basis I will probably look for a predictive UI…
Mmmm, I think of power auras mostly as idiot lights — you should be doing your rotation proactively, not reactively. You should fire each shot when you know it’s ready – not waiting for the light to pop up. But if you screw up and miss something (which is going to happen), power auras is there to catch your mistake.
And of course Power Auras is nice to warn you of procs and stuff too.
I use the standard UI too but i dont worry about the 2 bars on the right hand side , its seems there is enough there for me to operate well and everyting i need in a hurry is only a click away.
I have Power Auras help me with my rotation, but the lights pop up as soon as a shot is off of cooldown, regardless of the GCD. So I have forewarning for shots, and no down time waiting between the light and my keystroke (since I also keep a GCD timer by the lights). So it works for me, though again there’s thousands of ways to do dps “right” in terms of one’s UI.
I admit I have a rough rotation mapped out in my head from tapping it out so many times. I also keep tabs on GCD and autoshot in my head. But when a haste buff is present it throws a spanner in the works and the rotation cycle also goes out the window. I find that I end up reacting to my lights too much and I feel I lose some dps because of it. If you don’t feel the same way because your rotation is dialed in “bravo” there is a difference of skill. I must work harder.
I use MSBT as my idiot lights, but i use coolline as a way to help me anticipate when things are going to be available. I used to use some time based timer to anticipate cooldowns ending but the visual fits me better.
Agreed, I have just shrunk down my ui and mainly use a couple of macros (just for attack and pet) and power auras.
Not much else required
Thanks for the tips. I guess I need to clean up my UI now and, remove all the clutter. I may also use the UI scaling feature to shrink the buttons down to give me a better view.
I’ve also fallen in love with nUi+, before using this i tried all kind of addons to make my ui look the way that suits me. At the corner where omen is I can click the button there to bring up a big map of the area, dps meter or combat log. also u see where my debuffs are, I use satrina buff frames for debuffs, as didn’t like the way nUi did them, now I can place them to be where I want and usually keep them on that spot so I def don’t miss them.

Whilest not directly related to the UI going on here…. has anyone bothered to question why the “dwarves-over-everyone” hunter is riding the pansy night elf mount?
