25-man raid night over the weekend, and right off the bat it was clear that we had a better class mix than usual. Our guild raids do not optimize for class mix with regard to buffs, so it’s pretty hit or miss what kind of buffs I’ll have. I have never, for example, had all of the buffs that boost hunters.

So it was a nice change to pick up an extra couple of buffs and I saw the difference right off the bat on Koralon. Now it’s been a while since I got an upgrade, so I’m pretty used to doing darned close to the same damage on simple fights like this. But on Sat POW! The right buffs can make a significant difference.

After clearing out VoA we wandered over to TotC where again out of the gate I noticed not just my dps higher, but higher dps across the board. The entire raid was killing stuff substantially faster, which helped make the raid much smoother sailing than our 25s usually are.

And then the magical moment. After a super sweet Twins fight (I got empowered twice, with well-planned cooldowns available both times) the Twins actually dropped Death’s Verdict. This trinket is frickin’ phenomenal, and I had been drooling over it for a long, long time now.

Now our guild uses a variation of the loot council, which is to say, Hrist.

Upgrades are handed out based on attendance, size of upgrade, who it would do most for, and in general spread out so that everyone gets their turn. The idea is to put loot where it will do the most good for the raid as a whole. Hrist’s general hatred of everything and everyone ensures fairness.

Luckily for me it has been a while since I saw any loot (and still haven’t got a trophy) and Death’s Verdict was a massive upgrade and BiS for the content our guild clears. And after close to half the raid put in for the darned thing and about 15 hours of waiting, I actually got the trinket. Shortly thereafter I got a tell from AFK Rogue that went like this:

AFK Rogue: That’s an awesome trinket. What will that do to your dps?

Frost: It will make it go up.

And indeed I cannot wait to raid with that puppy proccing me 450 agility every 45 seconds! Wooo!

Gratz ! very nice trinket :)

  2. Pathanther says:

Speaking of optimal buffs, what would be a good raid makup to boost a hunter’s dps in both 10/25 man raids

  3. Prelious says:

    Brilliant! Gratz on win!

    ‘It..make..you..kill..more..go..faster..yes!?’

    ‘Yuh..me..kill..more..faster!!

  4. Lyraat says:

    Pathanther,

2 pallies = kings and might
1 ret pally = judging wisdom
ret pally or BM hunter = 3% increase dmg
    mage = arcane brilliance
shaman or DK = Strength of Earth totem or horn of winter
feral druid = Mark of the wild, 5% crit, mangle (for MM hunters)
rogues = tricks of the trade (good luck getting that buff :D )
lock = Curse of the Elements (for SV hunters)
priest = stam buff (for SV hunters)
warrior = battle shout (if no BoM)
shaman, DK, or MM hunter = 10% AP

I think that’s it. Might be missing one or two (lots of redundant buffs.)

  5. Vael says:

Grats grats grats on that bad boy trinket! Best in Slot, right?

  6. Masumi says:

yes that is a sweet trinket..i have been drooling over that for a while too..questions for you.. is it on the same timer as the greatness card? would you use both the greatness card and death’s verdict or use mark of supremacy and death’s verdict?

  7. I just finally dished out 5.5k gold on Llane to buy a Greatness card. I was expecting a gigantaur boost in dps out of it, but haven’t seen a huge difference as of yet. I haven’t done a whole lot of raiding since I got it tho, so I’m sure I’ll notice when I get into the real stuff. That Deaths Verdict is flippin beautiful. At this point, i’d almost be pissed if I get it tho, wasting 5.5k….

  8. Rãd says:

They are two separate buffs. Even the 245 and 258 versions (non-heroic and heroic 25) are different buffs and can be stacked.

  9. Cyrisa says:

What nice is that it also procs with greatness and they are pretty much on the same timer so the majority of the time they proc you will gaining +750 agi.

On a sidenote, if you have the 4-Piece Windrunner’s set bonus you will gain a second Greatness buff that gives the 600 AP to your pet and it also is on the same timer for DV and greatness card. Being lucky and having all of those proc during a Heroism and popping Readiness and be a huge jump in DPS.

  10. Frostheim says:

Mark of Supremacy is actually better than Greatness – assuming you can actually use the hit of course.

  11. Purp says:

    I AM SO JEALOUS GRAAAAAAH
We’ve been doing 25toc almost every week since it came out and haven’t seen it drop yet :/
Not that it matters.. I’m still very far away from the top of the loot priority list…

  12. Purp says:

    @Masumi
Many top hunters are using greatness and verdict so yes, it does stack :)

  13. sonicross says:

WHICH TRINK IS BEST? Here’s the Math.

    Death’s Verdict
    Stat Bonus: +256 AP
    Random: +450 agil (15 sec)
    Cooldown: (35% chance) = every 45 sec

    Darkmoon Card: Greatness
    Stat Bonus: +90 agility
    Random: +300 agil (15 sec)
    Cooldown: (35% chance) = every 45 sec

    Mark of Supremecy
    Stat Bonus: +128 hit
    Use: 1024 AP (20 sec)
    Cooldown: 2 Minutes

    Fury of Five Flights
    Stat Bonus: N/A
    Constant: 320 AP
Cooldown: None (stops when you stop shooting)

Now using the EAP conversion guide – here’s what we get taking the random and bonus stats over a length of time. (The equation used is posted after the stats).

1 Minute Period what would your DPS increase on average.
    ———————————————————-
    BM SV MM
    DV 446.13 565.38 486.63

    DC:G 278.85 453.75 338.25

    MoS 268.59 340.26 319.15

    FoFF 320 320 320

    ———————————————————-

If we use the procs will “pop” every 45 sec (1 time a minute), which seems to be consistent with all testing.

    Stat Bonus x 60 (seconds) = A
    Proc Bonus x 15 (seconds)= B
    A + B / 60 = Average DPS increase over 60 sec.

Mark of Supremacy has a 2 min CD so the equation is slightly different
    Stat Bonus x 60 (seconds) = A
    Proc Bonus x 20 (seconds)= B
    A + B / 120 = Average DPS increase over 60 sec.

  14. Frostheim says:

Ah, I see the error in your math — specifically you made a mistake on Mark of Supremacy and only multiplied the stat by 60 (then divided by 120) rather than multiply by 120 and divide by 120. Also taking something with a 45 sec cooldown and dividing by 60 sec will give you some off results. Generally you’ll get the proc within one or two shots of the cooldown being available, so it’s pretty safe to theorycraft it every 45 sec (or more like 48 sec if you’re being conservative). Thus you get the following stats, with my personal EAP values:

Greatness (90 agil and proc 300 agil for 15 sec)
    Equivalent to 190 Agility
    EAP: 245.67

Death’s Verdict (256 ap and proc 450 agil for 15 sec every 45 sec)
Equivalent to 256 ap and 150 agility
    EAP: 333.98

Supremacy (128 hit and 1024 ap for 20 sec every 120 sec)
Equivalent to 128 hit and 171 ap
    EAP: 310.49

Now you can apply your own EAP to those values — keeping in mind that EAP is different based not just on your talents, but on your gear. Also remember that EAP (and spreadsheets) is a qualitative tool — it is not good at predicting dps: it’s only good at comparing how much better one thing is than another.

  15. Arthemystia says:

I read the blog title and said “Damnit, Frost got the ToC25 Trinket!” Not that I’m angry, mind you, and I’m actually happy for you. It kicks all kinds of ass. But it’s a cold reminder that I don’t have it, and may never.

Now go for the heroic one, which procs independently. Together they’ll be utterly insane.

  16. quivering says:

i was wanting the orgasmic combo of mjonir runestone and deaths choice (horde version)

im curious if ICC will drop arp proc trinkets. this may further put a dent in armor penetration builds. i know im getting sick of grim toll soaring me over the hit cap, wasting a static stat.

  17. Fradin says:

Congrats Frost thats one mighty fine trinket did you get one for us all lol .Unfortunately we dont have enough players for 25 mans yet and are still working in Ulduar to get the team work happening right.

  18. Bindura says:

My upgrades for the weekend saw me jump over 600dps for 10man raid buffs :)
Good weekend to say the least

  19. Cyrisa says:

Interesting stuff Frost, I think I might pick up the Mark and do some testing.

  20. Best upgrade I’ve gotten so far this week was the head from Ony. I do Ony every week hoping for the gun or the Polearm. But no. Never see em. Anyhow, I finally won the head, and went and grabbed the necklace. I didn’t realize that it had hit on it. Thanks to that bit of hit, I was able to swap out my T9 shoulders for the Triumph badge shoulders. Between the two upgrades, I ought to get at least a minor boost in dps. I’d trade both upgrades for that trinket tho…. /drool.

  21. Gratz, I scored Death’s Verdict just the last week. Man that thing procs A LOT! I love it!

A best Hunter Trinkets guide or posting might be nice. I was poking around using RAWR and it keeps telling me Darkmoon: Death is better than just about everything other than Death’s Verdict. I don’t really see it though.

  22. I had some raids and stuff filtered out or they modified their equations in v2.2.27 which shows other ones has being higher. :$

  23. Del says:

My rogue has all three trinkets mentioned above. I did pretty extensive testing on the dummy and noticed a signifigant dps loss with MoS vs Greatness. I am 315 hit with Greatness and DV and im guessing that im giving up to much for that extra hit. I returned it before the 2 hours had expried and got my emblems back.
