Just made the trip back from ICON. If you were there and had trouble finding us due to some program book snafus, I apologize. Also, the hotel internet was terrible (as anyone there can attest). We spent over an hour on the phone with their provider’s tech support, bought new hardware, tried everything possible, but it was just crappy and the hotel completely mis-stated their internet capabilities. I think our record for the weekend was 15 minutes online without being dc’d.
Despite that Bella (the Cheerleader) and I had a great time. We played with our characters projected on the big screen and we got to talk to a bunch of people about WoW and hunters and strategy.
One of the most interesting things about the weekend from my perspective was running around with Bella in real life. Now I’ve hung out with her before, but never for so long a period of time. I think it’s always fascinating to see how much people really are like their characters. I guess I always expect the online persona to be more different.
Now, we’ve all been afflicted with tunnel vision from time to time and I think healers are more prone to it, since they’re typically watching 25 health bars complete with debuffs. So in our 10-man we’ve been known to laugh about bella standing in the fire, burning away and healing away. We also mock her mercilessly for refusing to use a mouse. This is good natured in the sense that it’s mean and meant to succeed in changing her behavior where repeated suggestions and logic did not.
But here’s the thing: she’s kind of like that in real life too.
It started when we got to the hotel. I was carrying some computer gear and she was pushing the cart with the rest of the stuff along. We took the elevator and met the con organizer. I got off, and the three of us chatted. Then we watched as the elevator doors started to close on her, shouting “Bella, get off the elevator.”
But we were too late and she went for a ride.
Later we were at Best Buy desperately looking for solutions to our internet problems and I realized that if I stopped walking, Bella would run into me from behind. In the interest of science I successfully repeated the experiment several times. Eventually she started hitting me so I stopped, but I think we can agree that she needs to use a mouse to move.
Also she locked her room key her hotel room. Five times.
On the other hand, true to her nature, Bella made friends with every person we passed, or were on an elevator with, or was within chatting range. I pursued a strategy of efficiently moving from point A to point B only talking to people when they talked at me first, generally looking intimidating to prevent that kind of sidetracking. But I was regularly foiled in my efficiency when I realized that Bella was still back at the elevator with someone she just met, but who is sharing their deepest secrets and dreams with her and braiding her hair.
Overall I think we made a good team though. Bella was cheerful and talked to everyone and made them feel welcome as she showed them her cute little toy computer and made friends. And I carried around a spare key to her room.

Ahhh…. young love blossoms, how sweet
Looks like u had a lot of fun
“But we were too late and she went for a ride.” – loved that part, hehehe
Heh… she was totally like that in high school too.
/hug
love ya Bella!
Btw, Frost… not everyone is like their characters. I mean, I’m not a mean, vindictive, cocky bastard that finds amusement at others suffering, am I?
Must have some photos to share too?
Haha! Awesome Frost. It sounds like you guys had a great time. Wish I could have seen your panel. Seriously though, Bella sounds like me, and I play a hunter, not a healer….although there are times I find myself standing in the flames and the healers yelling at me….;)
Thanks guys! At least you feel my pain.. in my defense.. this is how the scenario went for me….
So after 7 hours of driving through snow and sleet and what not. we finally get to the Con. We brave the entrance and find the registration table. We find Talasien (our esteemed host) and start discussing things like broadband and other techy stuff… when we finally find a cart. We load our luggage onto it.. and Frost proceeds to walk toward the doors… naturally, being a helpful person, i begin to push the cart as no one is behind me to do the task. You have to know.. that Frost is a staggering 6’2″ man and i am a 5’1″ woman…. so i figure.. he will take over the pushing of the cart… but no… he and Tala are embroilled in a deep discussion that really does not involve me. So we are riding up the elevator, and both men walk out.. simple as you please.. while i am stuck inside trying to get the damn cart over the lip of the elevator and not succeeding… and they are standing there.. looking at me and laughing, yelling me to get out of the elevator… i mean really!! Maybe instead of trying to change me.. they could have stepped up and pulled the damn cart out of the elevator so I wouldn’t have to do the job myself!! (and in my defense.. i am not the only one who stands in fire.. i am just the easiest to yell at since… well.. i have no idea why:D
But i agree… it was a great time, and i think it was a great beginning of a grass roots movement to keep the WHU at ICon! Pictures to follow…
6’2″!!???…and he plays a dwarf?? Could it be the first recorded case of reverse compensating?
If I were like my character I’d be an elf with boobs. Reverse compensation indeed.
You can also say that you, frost, are also like your toon in that you notice something going on and decide to test your theory multiple times to see if it holds. =P
Hehe was laughing for a bit at the key losing comment
Anyywho anything interesting happen with the actual presentation stuff you did? And I’m also curious to find out what you found was the most broken class in wow hehe
Love the 2 conflicting storys looks like you could of been more a gentleman Frost and gave the Lady a hand with the trolly however i guess it would not of been so funny then. So what was the feedback like from people you talked to there were people instrested in wow , did the internet hold up long enough to put on a show by the way you orginally posted i guess not. Did you meet any non wow gamers and manage to convert them or get them interested maybe you should see if you could get on blizzards payroll for introducing new members or free monthly membership would be nice. But really glad you both had a great time by the sounds of things and promted the WHU.
Bella and my versions I think are compatible — I wasn’t just ignoring her and making her push the car — I was carrying the computer equipment, which I think was a bit more of a pain than pushing the cart
Alas at the Science of Broken panel the audience unanimously wanted to see various in-game stuff rather than debate brokenness, so we did that instead. I guess we’ll have to determine the most broken class at the next con!
You are the easiest to yell at because you stand in the fire almost 3x more often than the next highest person.
Could have sold tickest to Follow you two around. Woulda been a hit!
Sigh… i really do try not to stand in fire….
Thanks Dark:D Frost and I really did have a good time together, and interestingly enough, we work really well together:D Must be that opposites attract…
(and then they fight to the death! just kidding!
)
