I watched a mage friend, KILL one of the doggies, and it stayed dead. My best guess as to what happened, is that he one shot it before it could get the 'can't die' ability added when the fight started.
Just thought you might be interested.

After the 4.0.1 patch released, the talent hawk eye was no more. The range of hunter shots have been increased, but it’s just not enough to stay out of range of some of the boss spells (like this one with pyroblast). So what you want to do is down him as fast as possible. With the new mend pet (healing 25% health of your pet) and the new mending glyph (extra 3% healing per tick), mend pet heals 40% pet health over its duration. Also, because armor penetration has been removed, most hunter gear has a huge amount of extra stamina. In other words, you won’t have any problems keeping your pet up with mend pet and the T5 bonus. You actually heal enough for your pet to attack the boss instead of tanking one of his adds, because he lives through the debuff. A turtle for his special ability turtle shield and cower are advised skills though. Because you get hit by pyroblast in patch 4.0.1 all the time, you want to dps the boss as much as possible. But even with not very good gear it should be doable. Just go all out on the boss, including your pet.

Just adding a little guide here for the people who want to solo him on 4.0.1. I just got my two pieces of t5 and the first thing i did was go solo MC! got the first 8 bosses down nice and easy, tonorrow ill have a go at Majordomo & hopefully rags.
btw i did this guy with some pretty average gear and only a couple of ilv232 pvp pieces for resilience (i only hit 80 last week) and didnt get all the buffs i could have, my pet only had 22k life but alternating cower & shell shield was *just* enough to keep him alive for the length of the fight dying right at the end, after i screwed up at about 20% and had my pet swing at Golemagg for a couple of secconds getting the debuff. It was frantic and awesome :-)

great set of soloing guides, worked perfectly. I just tried this fight late last night after breezing through most of Molten Core, and only got him to about 50% when my pet died. I was using my T5 2 piece(chest and shoulders) and the iLvL 232 PvP badge gear, with Frost's max health build - my pet had 33.4k health fully buffed. Looking forward to giving this another attempt with the this strategy. Thanks!

So THAT’S how the debuff works! I have not yet had need of the max health build. My pet is at 28.3k health with the build above and I down things much faster than with the max health build. I have the two tier 5 pieces, furious gladiator helm and boots, and the standard extreme solo buffs (food, mammoth treats, fortitude scroll and drums of wild and kings).
Man, soloing MC is fun. Thanks so much for the awesome strats and advice Frostheim :)

I followed Frostheim’s strat and got this down on my first attempt. The beauty of this is that if you pull agro, Golemagg has to go all the way around to get to you - plenty of time to FD, or even start running for your life if you somehow lose your pet and FD is on cooldown. You'll always be at max distance, and if you do pull agro, when you FD, Golemagg will go right back to where he was - optimal placement for your pet. But agro wasn't really an issue for me. Using eyes of the beast to charge in with your pet gives you precision over placement. (Also, if you try to send him in to attack while standing on the ledge, he'll go the long route, pulling every trash mob in the way, which is kind of funny to watch once.) Always have your pet attacking a dog, not Golemagg. Be careful - when the dog dies and then resurrects, your pet sometimes will change its target.

It’s best to stand on the ledge that looks down on Golemagg. It doesn't matter how much damage you do - all that matters is how much you can heal your pet.

Yes, 2 piece of t5 is still necessary. Or isn't it nessesary anymore?

With T8/T9, is it still worth getting the 2 pieces of T5 for heals?
