How to Hunter Solo Golemagg in Molten Core

So I was cleaning out my video files to make room for a new project I’m working on when I discovered I never actually put together the video of the Golemagg solo, so here it is!

Golemagg the Incinerator is one of the most difficult bosses in Molten Core for a hunter to solo. He and his core hounds do punishing amounts of damage to your pet — actually so much damage that you can’t even heal though it. However, there’s a trick!

Hunter Solo of Golemagg the Incinerator: Molten Core Solo

YouTube direct link: Hunter Solo Golemagg the Incinerator in Molten Core

Talents: Max Health Extreme Solo Build
Pet: Turtle
Pet Talents: Extreme Solo Pet Build
Gear: 2 pieces of T5 (see full Extreme Hunter Solo Gear article)

Golemagg has a couple of abilities that you should be aware of as a soloing hunter: the first is that he periodically launches a pyroblast at a random target. Over the course of this long fight, that will kill you. The second is that he has a stacking debuff that is put on any target that attacks him in melee — this means you pet can never attack Golemagg (many thanks to the reader that told me how the debuff worked!).

The secret to the Golemagg solo is all positioning, and the fact that your pet won’t attack Golemagg.

Begin by sending your pet straight in, but then use the “stay” command to stop your pet a bit in front of Golemagg. The reason for this is you need your pet to be on your side of him (not behind him).

Golemagg and the dogs will aggro a moment after your pet stops. Target one of the dogs and send your pet at the dog. Then position yourself so that you are at max range — at max range you’ll be out of range of the pyroblasts – but be sure you’re still in range to heal your pet (the reason your pet needs to be on your side of the boss).

At first you’ll just be shooting the dog your pet is on — you have to keep shooting to get enough healing on your pet. Every time MD is available you want to switch to Golemagg and MD to him. Eventually through MD and thunderstomp your pet will build a good amount of threat on Golemagg and you can go all out on him.

Remember, you need to be dpsing constantly to keep your pet healed, so early on if you’re getting too much threat on Golemagg switch to one of the core hounds to dps.

You’ll also need to use Shell Shield almost every chance you can. I found that when I was in viper I wasn’t healing quite enough, so I went into viper every time shell shield was up.

It’s a long fight, and a bit of a stressful one in the first minute, but if you have the positioning right, don’t pull agrro, and if your pet has enough health, it’s totally doable. For reference my pet had about 29k health on this fight — I used everything to boost it, including foot, stamina scrolls on me and my pet, and drums of the wild and kings.

Nice video man, and have to say, I love the music. The whole video I couldn’t get out of my head that Golemagg was thrashing to the music :P
    Well done

I’ve run into music problems with my vids when I pick my own songs. Youtube has a habit of muting them for copyright reasons. So like Frost, I’ve found that scrolling through youtube’s pre-approved songs to find one of comparable length is usually easier. And the techno/electronic list is longer than most, and also has many tracks that are long enough to accommodate longer WoW videos.

Is this the last of MC then Frost? Congrats even if it isn’t. Tearing up MC is a hell of an achievement.

I actually don’t scroll through the youtube song — I pretty much just try to pick ones I think are obscure and hope for the best. Things song, for example, was created by a guildemate of mine (and it won’t be the last you hear of it).

Yup, this is was the only MC boss I hadn’t put up a video for – MC is completely clear.

Nothing to do with MC, but just wanted to share… My alliance hunter is currently level 64, and I’ve been using the Extreme Solo builds (for hunter and pet, as talent points will permit) to level her. Just want to say, these builds are working fantastically for my hunter. She is able to solo most elite quest mobs, and burn through multiple-mob fights. She is using a croc for a pet (first croc I ever used), and I am impressed with his ability to hold aggro. So thanks for posting those Extreme builds- I know they were more intended for level 80′s who were going on solo raid crawls, but these builds are also making the levelling experience much better for me.

Awesome guide Frost! This was the last fight i was stuck on in MC. I successfully completed solo MC a couple weeks ago. Been farming TF every week for a while now, but now i got myself an Eye of Sulfuras! And I can get more rep per week! Thanks again!

With T8/T9, is it still worth getting the 2 pieces of T5 for heals? Or isn’t it nessesary anymore?

Yes, 2 piece of t5 is still necessary. It doesn’t matter how much damage you do – all that matters is how much you can heal your pet.

You’re welcome for the tip, Frost. I’m happy to see u finally put this up to complete your guide. I couldnt have done my MC clear without your extreme solo guides.

I really am having an insane time with this fight. Lol managing pet heals, agro, threat, and staying at max range is really tough for me lol.

It’s best to stand on the ledge that looks down on Golemagg. The beauty of this is that if you pull agro, Golemagg has to go all the way around to get to you – plenty of time to FD, or even start running for your life if you somehow lose your pet and FD is on cooldown. You’ll always be at max distance, and if you do pull agro, when you FD, Golemagg will go right back to where he was – optimal placement for your pet. But agro wasn’t really an issue for me. Using eyes of the beast to charge in with your pet gives you precision over placement. (Also, if you try to send him in to attack while standing on the ledge, he’ll go the long route, pulling every trash mob in the way, which is kind of funny to watch once.) Always have your pet attacking a dog, not Golemagg. Be careful – when the dog dies and then resurrects, your pet sometimes will change its target.

I followed Frostheim’s strat and got this down on my first attempt. Gear level around 232 and using a modified “standard” extreme soloing build:

I have not yet had need of the max health build. My pet is at 28.3k health with the build above and I down things much faster than with the max health build. I have the two tier 5 pieces, furious gladiator helm and boots, and the standard extreme solo buffs (food, mammoth treats, fortitude scroll and drums of wild and kings).

Man, soloing MC is fun. Thanks so much for the awesome strats and advice Frostheim :)

So THAT’S how the debuff works! I just tried this fight late last night after breezing through most of Molten Core, and only got him to about 50% when my pet died. I was using my T5 2 piece(chest and shoulders) and the iLvL 232 PvP badge gear, with Frost’s max health build – my pet had 33.4k health fully buffed. Looking forward to giving this another attempt with the this strategy. Thanks!

great set of soloing guides, worked perfectly. I just got my two pieces of t5 and the first thing i did was go solo MC! got the first 8 bosses down nice and easy, tonorrow ill have a go at Majordomo & hopefully rags.

btw i did this guy with some pretty average gear and only a couple of ilv232 pvp pieces for resilience (i only hit 80 last week) and didnt get all the buffs i could have, my pet only had 22k life but alternating cower & shell shield was *just* enough to keep him alive for the length of the fight dying right at the end, after i screwed up at about 20% and had my pet swing at Golemagg for a couple of secconds getting the debuff. It was frantic and awesome :-)
