Frostheim’s Power Auras

Posted: by Frostheim

In any given week I’ll get at least one email asking for my Power Aura settings – many more than that if I mentioned Power Auras in a blog or posted a video. And after the Hunter Addons Guide post on Friday, the requests have gotten a little crazy.  So I’m finally putting them up here so you can import them yourself.

w-frostauras

But first some discussion: I do not suggest these are an ideal setup – this is just what works for me (typically meaning it’s the first thing I set up and changing would be more effort that my lazy bum is willing to do). I’ve seen some pretty impressive Power Aura setups in the past – sophisticated streamlined and downright attractive.

Mine are not that.

I go more for the smack you in the face approach. To me, Power Auras are idiot lights. 90% of the time my fingers are going through my shot rotation regardless of what’s happening on the screen, regardless if even if I’m thinking about it. I don’t need a reminder to let me know when Kill Shot is available, or Chimera Shot is off cooldown. I just hit them, because it’s habit.

Of course, the other 10% of the time I am an idiot, and that’s where Power Auras comes in.

When Lock & Load procs, I want it to be big, and moving, and have a loud sound, because I do not want to miss that! Things like arcane shot or aimed shot being available are less of a big deal — but serpent sting not being up (OMFG in MM) is a big deal. And damn I want to know if I’m in viper at full mana – so I don’t want subtle, I want it to smack me upside the head for forgetting.

So here’s what I got if you want to import it into your very own Power Auras. Since the import strings are crazy long, here is a list of what all my Power Auras options are, so you can see the basics of what I got without scrolling down forever.

  • General Stuff
    • Buff warnings (based on my 10-man group) – puts text on the upper right of the screen letting me know if I’m missing blessing of might or wisdom, or if I don’t have my flask on. I should really add others like GotW and stuff on there too. Only shows if I’m in a raid.
    • Kill Shot available
    • Serpent Sting – warning when it’s not up
    • Viper Warning – displays a warning if I’m in viper when at nearly full mana. I know we’ve all had one of these moments in raids — well no more! Only shows when in combat. (Note – this one is a tad tricksy – so be sure to read the notes).
  • Survival Stuff
    • Black Arrow available
    • Explosive Shot available
    • Lock & Load proc
  • Marksman Stuff
    • Trueshot Aura warning text on top of screen if I don’t have TSA up
    • Chimera Shot available
    • Aimed Shot available
    • Arcane Shot available
  • Extreme Solo Stuff
    • Mend Pet – warns when it’s not up. I disable this one when I’m not doing extreme soloing, of course.

How to Import It

Download and install Power Auras. Type /powa to open it up. Click the Import button. Copy and past the Power Aura strings below into the field. That’s all there is to it. Once you have them imported, you’ll very likely want to play around with the look of them to make them your own.

If you have any questions here is the place to ask – or shoot me an email. I’m no expert, but I’ll be happy to answer any questions I can.

Lacking a Buff Notice
Simple text on the far right of the screen — fairly inconspicuous. Basically a raid checklist. This one is for blessing of might, but you can just copy it and change it to whatever buff you want and adjust the Y axis position. Note: some people have difficulty changing text – the secret is you have to type in the text, and then hit enter. It won’t take unless you hit enter.

Aspect of the Viper When Near Full Mana
Large obscuring pulsing graphic and sound effect. Only shows when in combat. This is a tad tricksy, and is actually two auras combined. First, add this aura, which is just a notice that you are over 92% mana — it’s invisible and doesn’t show anything on your screen at all.

gcd:bofalse; soundfile:st; owntex:bofalse; b:nu1; anim1:nu1; duration:nu0; g:nu0.29803921568627; thresholdinvert:botrue; ignoremaj:botrue; opt2:nu0; speed:nu2; multiids:st; icon:stInterface\icons\Spell_fire_meteorstorm; size:nu0.10000000149012; torsion:nu1; stance:nu10; stacksOperator:st=; realaura:nu1; combat:nu0; customname:st; timer:bofalse; mine:bofalse; begin:nu1; off:bofalse; optunitn:bofalse; anim2:nu0; textaura:bofalse; party:bofalse; isdebuff:bofalse; wowtex:bofalse; groupany:bofalse; customsound:st; timerduration:nu0; target:bofalse; exact:bofalse; unitn:stOnly for raid/group.; bufftype:nu9; threshold:nu92; aurastextfont:nu1; stacks:nu0; isenchant:bofalse; focus:bofalse; customtex:bofalse; raid:bofalse; isdebufftype:bofalse; texture:nu22; buffname:st???; inverse:bofalse; opt1:nu0; r:nu0.22745098039216; randomcolor:bofalse; y:nu-403; alpha:nu0.10000000149012; aurastext:st; x:nu-4; texmode:nu2; symetrie:nu0; ismounted:bofalse; targetfriend:bofalse; sound:nu0; isinraid:bofalse; finish:nu1

Then as a second aura, we add the aspect of the viper notification. You will have to slightly edit this after you import it. In the edit window (activation tab) you’ll see there’s a text box just below (and a bit to the right) of the box reading “Aspect of the Viper.” In that box you need to enter the Aura ID of the previous aura we just imported. You can get the id number by scrolling over the icon of that aura, and it will show up in brackets – for example [15]. Just replace my number with your number.

What this does is only trigger this aura if the other aura is also triggered. I noticed that there’s a bit of a delay when it triggers, which is why I set it at 92%, though it turns off instantly when you leave viper. Either way, it will stop you from being in viper for half of a fight. Okay, here’s the viper half of it:

Do you know how to set the TSA warning so that you don’t get it flagged when the buff is temporarily overwritten?

I’ve had Power Aura’s set up for a while (thoguh slightly differently), but keep getting freaked out in raids and groups when my TSA ring lights up thanks to some DK being helpful!

  2. Garfunkel of Hellscream says:

Great post, every hunter should now about power auras, just amazing
I use it for almost everything, but I also like Viper Notify, I have it set to play it’s sound at 95% mana, it’s a nice little “chickens’ done” kind chime – once I hear it one more shot then back to hawk

    happy hunting everyone

  3. Omogon says:

My dwarf mind reels at all this stuff. I have Viper notify and I like very much…..but this Power Aura thing looks very complicated to me !

  4. Rapidan says:

i have only used Viper Notify, because everything else seemed very complicated… i mean i got a computer to play games with, not write code with. however, i know you’re not fans of Macs, but i am going to have to see if i can import these on my Pro… gods forbid i should have to type those strings! thanks for your insights, too, really heps me!

  5. Frostheim says:

I feel the need to point out that while the strings look complicated, Power Auras is very simple and intuitive to set up. You just check some boxes and type in the name of the ability you want to track. The import function lets you copy other people’s easily, and that’s where the strings come in!

  6. Arthemystia says:

“Smack you in the face approach.” Heh. I’ve determined that Frost’s #1 goal in WoW isn’t epic dps. It’s ensuring that he never looks like a huntard.

    ;-)

  7. Tinson says:

I use Power Auras also and one I use is a display when my Hunter’s Mark is removed. Especially nice since I have imp/glyphed HM. If another hunter replaces my mark with one that’s unimproved it will still replace it even though it is lesser. Mine sits at 750 AP bonus and I hate wasting a GCD during combat to regain that 250AP when my HM notifation starts flashing. It functions only to notify me, at all times, whether my mark is not up on a hostile target.

  8. Zat says:

Thanks for finally putting together the addon guide. I’m going to try and get the auras in for my raid on Tuesday. I’ll report how well it worked.

  9. Anarka says:

to Rapidan, im using linux and i just use ctrl v on WoW to paste.
Another solution could probably would be to use a pre made config file, which is located in the directory:

    World_of_Warcraft/WTF/Account/AccountName/ServerName/CharName/SavedVariables/PowerAuras.lua

  10. Kantsuu says:

@Tinson, if you have used HM on a target and mouse over the debuff, does it show that 750 AP bonus? Whether I have the Improved HM talents or not, all I ever see is +500. I was wondering if this is a glitch for everyone and though it says 500 it still works as 750 or something wrong with mine for some odd reason.

  11. nekomancer says:

Is it possible to somehow change icon displayed for specific aura on page #x? For example like you set up that icon for “Mana” indicator?

  12. Frostheim says:

Yes, you can change the icon, the size, the color, and the position. Open up Power Auras, select the one you want to change and click edit. Toward the top will be something called “Texture” with a slider bar. As you slide the bar you can see all the different icon options. You can also slide the X and Y axis bars to chane the position.

  13. Zidor says:

I’d like to think I’m an intuitive guy but I could not get mine to work with the simple fields. First, I wasn’t sure which category to put something like Lock and Load proc under – I tried spell action, and checked the boxes I thought were correct. Nothing. Rinsed and repeated with different boxes checked, different spellings, reading forums, reading the simple tooltips so many times I started to feel like I was in kindergarden… was going mad (love the different visual options and fiddled with that a lot, but with no productive results in world activity, it was all just tinkering for naught).

When I saw your code strings, this was the kind of stuff that was being posted on some of the forums I’d visited to figure out what I was doing wrong (as well as other posts by fellow mod devs who really did get into the lua code with suggestions of improvement). My little dwarf head just went in circles with the stuff (not to mention my own lazy bum that was suggesting to drop the whole gig).

Thank you once again for posting this. It’s gonna be great to have the auras up so I won’t ever go through a fight wondering why my dps just took a nose-dive (Viper curse), miss an L&L proc, or lose SS on the target. I guess another year or less of needing something like Viper and then it turns into something else hehe. That will be an interesting phase.

  14. nekomancer says:

@Frostheim – I mean if it is somehow possible to change the icon which is displayed in Power Aura menu – like for example icon:stInterface\icons\Spell_fire_meteorstorm for “Mana” ‘invisible’ aura in your example (basically just the image of respective aura button in the interface – so far if I create new aura from scratch, aura display in combat works fine, but there is only question mark displayed in menu, which is annoying). Maybe I am doing something wrong though.

  15. rapidan says:

Frostheim, Anarka… the CTRL-V worked just fine on the Mac, thanks.
on another note, now i have to test each one separate to find out what’s going off, lol! but i like the icon flashes and the sounds, coolness…

  16. Titen says:

    I swear I commented on this already….

Anyway great post, really made my powa aura’s shine!

  17. Fradin says:

I can see the viper being handy and the TSA mind you TSA is always up unless i die lol which does not happen to often these days, I can see the buff list being handy too just incase someone in the raid is sleeping and has not buffed you correctly. Might still be worth a look thanks Frost for the advice :).

  18. Renin says:

Could you post the Mend Pet aura?
I’ve been working on it for awhile and can’t seem to get it right.
    Thanks for all the info!

  19. Frostheim says:

Sorry, accidentally left that off – I just added it to the end. Pretty simple — buff, Mend Pet, cast by me, show when not active, show in combat only.

  20. Mike says:

Have been using this ever since you posted it and think it is amazing thanks again!

<—Hoping that if he keeps telling you he appreciates the work and thanking you, you won't stop posting =)

  21. muhn says:

POWA is fun to use, but I have copied a couple of your strings, thanks!

  22. elrith says:

I’ve installed the current version of Power Auras but cannot import code strings. I type /powa, click on import, press ctrl-v, I see the string pasted in the box, click on accept and nothing happens. I see the box with the string pasted and the two accept and cancel buttons. If I click on cancel, the import box closes as it should. What am I doing wrong that will not allow importing?

  23. Purp says:

Heh I found this addon after you posted your first vid a while back and love it.. thanks mang.
ALSO an actual question… I’ve been wondering what chat addon you use.. that gives the [R] for raid chat etc. Anyone able to tell me? :x

  24. elrith says:

Uninstalling and reinstalling worked. Nice addon!

  25. Frostheim says:

The chat addon I use is called Prat — it lets you do lots of things with customizing your chat. The only reason I have it is so I can size my chatbox to fill my screen and take screenshots of our guild meetings — thus I can post the meeting notes afterward and refer to the conversation without needing a billion screenshots :)

  26. Midos says:

Sorry if this has already been answered elsewhere, but what do you use to get your UI to look like that? It seems a lot more subtle than Bartender (particularly the vertical columns).

  27. Kasugano says:

You can make vertical columns with bartender — just tweak the column width options, and combine small widths with high button numbers.

Though that looks like it may just be standard WoW action bars to me.

  28. Tyrik says:

Curious to know if anyone else is having a problem with Text Auras? I cannot get text to display… never have. Any thoughts?

  29. Frostheim says:

The most common problem with the text I this: if you just type the text in the text field, it will not display. You need to type in the text and hit enter for it to be accepted.

  30. Frostheim says:

I just use the default game UI. To reduce the size of the display as I have go to the Video menu and check the “Use UI Scale” box. Then you can move the slider to shrink everything down.

  31. Shyrak says:

Thank you for posting some auras for MM hunters. I have tried to get some working on power auras, but my mind is too feeble to work it out. Looking forward to getting that little bit more dps now I don’t have to look at my keys :)

    Thanks!

  32. darkcraft says:

Hi, at first, i’d like to thank you for this. Very useful, thanks a lot!
At second – could you please make a string for rapid fire? It would be great :) Thanks again!

  33. Goshawk says:

im having problems with version Power Auras Classic 2.6.0-30000
i installed manually and my addon interface says its out of date, anyone have help?

  34. Hailphage says:

Thanks for this. Now I can actually spend time watching the battle instead of staring at my cooldowns all the time LOL. :)

  35. grim says:

thanks for the great guide, but I am trying to do something similar for Multi-Shot but can’t get it to work. The icon for the aura is always a question mark (meaning it doesn’t recognize Multi-Shot as a spell). Any ideas?

  36. grim says:

nvm, I had to close the interface for it to work.

  37. Bjeffwoff says:

can’t get mend pet to work :(
could u check if there’s any errors or something?
    tried several times.. /:

  38. Bjeffwoff says:

ok it works now, but only in BM :S

  39. Bjeffwoff says:

    failed in BM now..
and some others keep messing up when i change specc ;S

  40. EyerThund says:

Nice guide. I love the 92% mana and aspect of the viper combination!

I tried to make a cooldown aura for the turtles Shell Shield, that shows if the ability is ready again… but could’nt get it to work :(.

  41. cecchina says:

I did one for Hunter’s Mark. But I don’t manage to change the logo in the menu. It works well for me.
    Here is the string:

  42. MM till Death says:

Great Strings.. tyvm for posting… & just cuz im a Real huntard and cant seem to figure out the set up of Power aura.. any body got a string for The Greatness Proc off of the Darkmoon fairy card…. would like to have a slap in the face when it goes off so that i can hit Rapid fire or Readiness. Thanks again!

  43. kayoon says:

Frost did you change any of the sounds for these? my roommate is hating that when lock and load procs its the raid ready check… and i keep getting the evil glare! suggestion for a good place to download new and distinct sound effects?

  44. Bolvay says:

Could You post pls the string for the Darkmoon effect

  45. Nitzh says:

Hey! Great information in this text, gj!
Im wondering if and how i can show when my Mjolnir Runestone procc?

  46. Soogluk says:

    Hey Frost,

I imported everything like you said. Specifically, the Survival stuff. The image pops up fine, but there is no sound when I hit the test button…Am I doing something wrong?

  47. Furwall says:

When i use the viper aura it turns the pulse on the entire time i am in viper not at 92%. What can i change to cause this to only go at 92%.

  48. Goshawk says:

    Several problems
i had a problem with mend pet not working. First, i believe it only works if your pet is your focus. Second, in the edit menu, the button invert MUST be checked. This makes it only on when mend pet ISNT up.
Secondly i also have the issue of viper always being lit up when i use it like Furwall. Can anyone help?

  49. Alixx says:

hey maybe im just retarded but i cant get the Viper aura to work, am i entering the id with or without brackets? is it considered a “buff”? should i leave stack at “=0″? as of right now it will never activate

  50. Alixx says:

edit: So it turns out I AM retarded, haha I misread “box next to and below Aspect of the Viper box” as “Aspect of the Viper box”…

love the addon and your codes though, after a bit of minor tweaks I couldn’t ever go without it.

    Best Regards

  51. Gibby says:

Hey there, im trying to figure out how to set it up so aura goes off when my trinkey procs?

is it the trinket name i write in? or the buff that comes up with it procs?

    thanks

  52. Raild says:

Buff that comes up. Use Exact name

  53. xiamegaman says:

What about something to watch the cooldowns for your shots, Chimera? Aimed? may be a countdown number using Power Aura as I am NeedtoKnow for the CDs.

  54. Hero says:

I have a question about auras, is it possible to set one out when you don’t have you pet out? Sometimes on progression kills we move pretty fast and it slips and i don’t pull him out until half way through fight when i’m looking for my wolf buff.

  55. Fuarghan says:

Not to annoy anyone but i was doin some searching for some PA strings and came accross this site it has some Hunter stuff in regards to PA

    http://powerauras.wikispaces.com/HunterExports

    hope it helps

  56. Gahrune says:

I Like the BRK setup simple and effective http://www.wow.com/2009/02/01/bigredkitty-power-auras/

  57. SmakenDahed says:

What about the T10 4PC bonus? And the Ashen Verdict Exalted Ring proc? All good things to get warned about for reapplying Serpents Sting (maybe not the T10 4pc if you’re mixing T9 2pc with T10 2pc).

  58. Darkling Thrush says:

lol – am giving myself huge immersion course today. Power Auras, new SV spec, and trying to develop key binding habits at same time… (yes, I have still been mostly cliking buttons). Thanks for these Frosty; at least it gives me a head start. Am back to running regular LK dungeons until this all feels natural :p

  59. WalkSoftly says:

With respect, Frostheim, Power Auras, now Power Auras Classic, is most assuredly not intuitive in the slightest… not until you are well immersed in it. If you aren’t copying/importing, you get the creation screen, with all sorts of things on it, you click on and are confronted by a plethora of options that are dizzying. As you get used to it, ideally with a calm friend on vent, things start to make sense, but there is ENDLESS possible tinkering with it – once you understand it, and even then, hmmm, is it a debuff or a buff, trying this or that (mage for example) – hunter is more straightforward, but too many alerts and you run that “what was THAT one for and wow my screen is busy” while trying to maintain raid awareness and not trip over anything in Putricide’s room… too busy is not good.

It’s a very useful addon, but as the Dwarf stated above, viper notify is bare bones very very helpful (although I like your combination to create a notification) and will end up copying several of yours.. still, not all; I don’t want, don’t need to know and memorize 15 different PAC notifications and deal with the noise/color/pulsating auras – the ones that matter – Lock and load when in survival – absolutely. Kill shot up? Yes. Black arrow, yes… and several others, but not sure I need to be be notified when arcane shot is up, for example or aimed or chimera – since I’d be using whatever was available and I’d be looking at it.

I guess one could learn to hit things based on aura notification alone – and never look down, but there will be some lag associated with that. I use a game pad, I wonder if dps would go up if I memorized a PAC notification for EVERY shot and then reacted the gamepad, or whether that lag would bring it down.. I watch the quartz cast bar carefully, and try to cut out any dps loss due to server lag… I’ll have to try it, but I suspect ideal is somewhere in the middle – using the notifications for both, but also keeping an eye on the Quartz bar and not having a notification go off every second…

  60. WalkSoftly says:

@Gahrune – I didn’t notice this before, but thank you for the pared down version from BRK, I miss him, glad he’s gone on to other things though. I like his simple and effective set up also – thank you for the link. I’ll take some from here and some from there.

    Thanks again :)

  61. Kryselyn says:

I would like to point out (yeah, I know it is months later but this shows up on google searches for hunter power auras) that you don’t have to learn lots of new symbols. I have my power auras set up to show me when arcane, aimed, chimera, kill shot, and kill command are available, as well as when serpent is not on my target and I simply use the icon of the shot/ability. For me, they are in a row above my action bars, but you could place them where ever you want them.

For trinket, tier set, engineering, etc procs you can set them up to show the icon or a symbol. For me, I don’t really need to know what item proc’d exactly, just what it affects. What I mean by this is, is it giving me an AP boost, a haste boost, a damage boost? Instead of me trying to keep track of (and learn the symbols for) each item that procs, I set mine up so that all AP procs are an exclamation mark with a triangle around it, damage procs are simple exclamation marks, and haste are zig zag exclamation marks (just happened to be the symbols I thought I’d remember easiest). Then I further refined them by assigning a color (red for pet buffs, blue for AP, green for haste, and yellow for damage) to each type and making the highest buff in each category the darkest/brightest and dimming down the colors as they get weaker. That may sound like a lot of effort… (and I admit it took some time to find the names of procs and what they did and then set them up) but what it has allowed me to do is time my reapplication of serpent sting/when I hit rapid fire/etc for when I know I have a strong AP buff and haste and/or damage boost to help increase my DPS but it allows me to do this at a glance (simple colors and shapes) instead of having to process the symbols I’m seeing and whether they go together well or not.

I also agree that it can be difficult to figure out how to set things up in Power Auras. I cheated and had my husband do it or I copied the strings from others (like BRK and here) and then just changed icons and settings to suit my needs. But I do find that the more I play around with it, the better I am getting with it. I was even able to set up some simple power auras for my shaman and warrior alts based on some of my hunter auras, including a huge pulsing star for when Maelstrom his 5 on my shaman (I can’t miss it and although it is somewhat transparent, it is very annoying so I want it off my screen ASAP!).

And that is really the best part about Power Auras, that it can be customized for almost anyone’s play style or needs.

  62. Urfeck says:

Great article, I have put a link back to it from my “Epilepsy and WoW” post on my blog. Let me know if you’d like the link removed. Thanks!

  63. Countryjuggalo says:

Great write up,but sadly these do not seem to work anymore with the launch of 4.0.1 Is there another post I’ve missed for an updated version or does this just need to be updated?

  64. Doke says:

Agreed to Update is more then welcome

  65. Factoid says:

Would love to see an update for this, and if anyone in the hunter community actually reads this still could you let me know how to set up power auras to track the CD on pet special abilities. I have been trying to set one up for my pvp spider’s web but have not gotten it to successfully track the CD. Any help would be much appreciated.
