10-man raid night last night, and it was awesomesauce.
We started off with server instability and crashing, and moved on to people unable to even log on to a character in Dalaran. We finally go our first Ony attempt in and on the wipe it took about a half hour to release, rez, and re-enter the instance.
We finally all got back in there and took Onyxia down, which was huge, huge fun. There are way more whelps than I remember from back in the day, and they seem to have more health, which makes for super fun aoe madness!
Other than the swarms of whelps and new adds, the fight is pretty much as I remember it. Now I’m looking forward to maybe one more week of Ony and then start hitting some of the Onyxia achievements.
With half our raid time burned with server issues we made our way to TotC (bypassing Dalaran, which was still a death sentence). We had some silliness on the Beasts, but then proceeded to one-shot the rest of the instance, clearing it in record time. I love the Faction Champions nerf – their reduced damage made them sooo much easier.
The 10-man group is already chomping at the bit to take on heroic mode. I’m thinking we should take at least one more week of farming more gear from it, but who knows, maybe next Tuesday if we do another one-shot clear we’ll use the extra time to check out heroic Beasts. I bet they suck sour donkey balls. I can’t wait.
All in all a good day for raiding. Love that dragon. Dead looks good on her.

nah, I had to go and they replaced me with a tank. I’m a little lower on the dps meter then I would like, but i was trying out a new spec that I wasnt geared for (though 3600dps is nothing to sneeze at).
err make that 3812dps.
Went there last night..wiped twice and had to go to bed….my SV Hunter buddy replaced me…..don’t know yet if they took her down…….but for the first time ever I topped the charts on both fights

Yeah, Ony was a BLAST! When those “Warder” adds first started popping, we had a wee bit of disorganized chaos panic and well…we wiped. But, on the second attempt, it went smooth as butter and we ended up getting all of the achievements, much to our surprise.
Hope the calendar shows the correct reset and she reopens again today!
The only downside of the buggy night was that I (and 2 other guildies) never recieved my Triumph emblems off of Icehowl, thanks to the craziness of patch day. He stayed a corpse thru the whole run, showing a lootable bag with the emblems in there taunting us. He even FELL THRU THE FLOOR with us on Anub, lol! We’ll see if my ticket gets answered sometime in the next week…
And yes, you should totally start on Heroic mode ToC…and then discover all the hidden secrets and share them with us. The challenge is fun, but damn, I’m tired of wiping on the WORMS! *grin*

The hunters in your Ony were slacking seriously
I noticed that topping the dps meterr is simply using volley a lot. I was on my mage alt.
And if that is your task in the raid, that is fine of course. However, we had 3 hunters and some one had 60% and the other 70% of their damage volley. The best hunter was the lowest dps, but was doing pretty much dpsing her down in phase 2 allone, as the rest of us all forgot it …
The hunters job was mainly to dps Onyxia during p2. We all pounced on the first wave of whelps when they spawned (which killed them in 1 volley with everyone on them) and after that all ranged were chasing Ony around the whole time.
So volley was a very small % of damage for us, alas.
After she came live yesterday we tried her on 10 men. To bad we wyped the first 2 times because there where some confusions by some people.
Butt our 3th try we got her down with no deaths.
In phase 2 a Warlock and myself kept on Ony untill all the first whelps where rounded up, then one volley and back to Ony.
You got to love a Volley hitting 38 mods at the same time.
Ended the fight with 6.2K dps so not bad i with only one volley in it.
Got my Headpiece aswel, butt i will only use it for Old School looks.
My T9 badges one with setbonus is better.
we just killed her on 25 man, it is a much more fun than 10 man which we did yesterday. AoEing all them extra whelps in 25 was hilarious. Blizz really need to make stuff more challenging tho

Our role was
1) Nuke Onyxia till adds came
2) Switch to aoe the whelps then back onto Onyxia
3) Every time a Guardian came, we switched to it on single target mode until it was dead.
doing that and having to run about to grab guardians i still manaaged a nice 8500dps in 25 man
Trust me, it can be real challenging if your in a small social guild and has to do all your raiding in PUG’s. After failing in three different PUG’s on Ony 10 and four on Ony 25, (including hunters using Acute Shortbow, http://thottbot.com/i36622, and druids in blues & greens) I am starting thinking about leaving my friends for a proper Raiding Guild… But I really like my friends so it hurts to much…
However, on Ony 25 just 30 sec onds into the fight I got a big flock of whelps in front of me, I had not even started DPS’ing Ony. I dropped a volley on the pack and saw my DPS meter going crazy.
I am quite new to this game and had never before seen my DPS hitting incredible 21k during a couple of minutes. I guess you all can figure out that we failed just 30 secs later but it was still fun.

I am playing a MM hunter and been playing this game for 3 years now, raided in endgame guilds and many pugs. I have the same problem with Ony I had 2 different pugs in 25 man, decent geared people and decent players. We had about 10 tries in 2 different raids. My dps was awesome first or second with another hunter, we had a problem with finding the right tactic. What do you do when Ranged is on Ony is phase 2 but melee fails at aoeing the adds :S ? so we had some tactic changing but we still failed, anyway has the right one.
PUGs can be nice if you have decent group and some progress, I haven’t been in an endgame guild for several months, I have pugged everything except TotC gonna try that next week. The fact is we had a pretty nice raiding guild in Vanilla and TBC, but after 2 years the guild started breaking up cuz everyone had RL stuff to do (university, moving, etc). I am still in this guild with 1 or 2 RL friends, since the rest quited wow or changed some random endgame game. To make a long story even longer: Never ever leave your friends, not even in wow, cuz things will never be same.
(Another solution could be changing to a endgame guild with a bunch of friends.)
Mormodre, I just finally finished Ony 25 man on my hunter ad we had the same issue: phase 2 tacts. We wiped like 8 times total. But the fact the pug stayed intact proves the players were all raiding material.
What I found, is that melee only on adds fails, but of course too many ranged away from Ony makes p2 last too long wiping also. What I did is possition myself at the entrance where the big adds come, and stayed there. Our Ot 1 would pick them up. When Ony was there above, nuke here, but when she flew away nuke the big adds. Also when welps are there (with OT 2 putting them in center), put viper on (mana regen) and volley.
Me and one other hunter did that, and this proved to be the right balance. But of course it all depends on your makeup of the raid. Both of us specced to have 3 x Hawk Eye, which I know most hunter’s consider a non-dps talent, but here really ruled.
Another failure was often, when we started at p3, the MT wasn’t having agro back yet because dps all switched immediately to her. Which of course is a failure anyway, as it is best to first kill the remaining big adds …
Anyway, the big gun dropped: Rifled Blastershot Launcher. I roled 71 with 5 hunters total … and still won. So it was worth the wiping
Armin, thanks for the advise. Hawk eye is something that catches my eye always when I am speccing is some situations it actually does increase our dps

Today the server resetted, so we could have a second try and the same tacts as above worked again. This time however was the only hunter doing this tric by standing right on the orther side if the entrance then were our OT 1 would pickup the OT. The melee dps was strong enough it didn’t require more assistance. Just keep a priority welps,big adds, ony and it pretty much went by itself. We hunters (OK and mages) are the only class that can do all three well so we are good backups, as you never know how a pug turns out as players are not handpicked and most likely there is no natural balance.
Except some unnessesairy first try wipe because the tank dc’d we one-shotted it.
Oh en the gun dropped again. We were with two hunters. He roled a 2, but since I got it last week, he went still home happy
i have also a rogue (appart from the hunter) and in Onyxia 25 did 7490 dps overall thanks to Fan of Knives on the whelps…. but Fan of Knives could be used continuously, whatever energy the rogue had…. i wonder if it is a glitch. Got killed on phase 3, so I am anxious to test it again and also see what the hunter amounts with Volley.
