ThinkGeek Cool Spy stuff

Hrist and I logged in early last night for our 10-man raid to test out our new headsets and figure out how the whole WoW ingame chat thing worked. Despite being quite simple, there were a couple of sneaky ways for it not to work – all of which we found – so a bit of a learning curve.

Hrist has two girls. I can't imagine they'll survive for long.

But after a bit of work we got everything up and running and spread the word to the raid group. It was strange hearing everyone’s voice for the first time. If you were to judge by voice, one of our healers is a 8 year old girl. We assume she’s not because we know she’s married, but then she is from the south. You never know how they do things down there in the bayou.

Hrist wisely decided on push to talk mode to avoid letting too much of his hatred spill over.

I still predict that voice chat delivers twice the Hrist hate as typing ever did.

So we went into TotC with voice chat going. We had our best, fastest, and cleanest takedown of the Beasts yet – waiting 45 min for a DC’d healer – then blew through Jaraxxus, and then after a lot of work, we were finally able to get past the dirty stinkin’ Faction Champions. It was a good night, and we got a nice easier fight ready for us on Thursday :)

So let’s hear it for voice chat! Instant communication mid-fight that no one misses. Yeah, I guess there’s something to be said for that.

Never Question the WHU

So I had posted on here as we were discussing switching to voice, and several people had some headset recommendations. Overall the consensus was to go with a USB headset, and to spend the money on something comfortable as many headsets can get uncomfortable with hours of raiding.

So naturally when I was looking at headsets I went ahead got a cheap $20 one that seemed like it would do the trick. Holy crap after 1 hour of raiding my ears frickin’ hurt. So yeah, I predict I stomp these into oblivion soon and go get a good pair.

Had I just listened to you guys in the first place… *sigh*

Not really a fair meter tonight, as this includes a *lot* of Faction Champs attempts - so CCing and kiting and stuff were the main duty for a ton of the time with many of us in pvp offspecs.

Isn’t that an album by The Levellers?

  2. Shootengiggs says:

    Yes. Yes it is.

Apparently just “yes” is too short a comment. :P

  3. KahliTorah says:

Oddly my mobo seems to have a strange issue of running out of USB bandwidth. So I can listen to everyone on vent, But not talk. Still confuses me. My old comp was about 6 years old and had 7 usb ports all with something crammed in. Never ran out of bandwidth. But this new mobo does if I just plug in the headset. @.@ So I get to listen to them pick fun at me, but I have to defend myself with typing. Lol.

  4. Omogon says:

Your dps never ceases to amaze me. I am always SO happy to consistently hit 3 K lol

  5. Quivering from phone says:

its also a biblical reference :P

i usually have high pew on faction cuz im a nuker.

i have a turtle beach headset but i use an old logitech. i put it around my neck, use the set mic as input and have output through speakers.

  6. Frostheim says:

Wow, Trilobite with the reference almost instantly! Yup, I was thinking of the first Levelers album.

  7. Hrist says:

    Yay more Levellers fans!

  8. Yorigrim says:

I have no idea who the Levellers are. Point me to something!

  9. Dervisch says:

Headsets are a pain in the backside! I must have gone through five before I found one that doesn’t make my ears hurt after a few hours. It was expensive too, but I love that it’s wireless. I can get up and get a drink without worrying that I’ll miss the pull or a particularly funny joke while AFK. Also, I can let my dogs out and listen to a strat. Super convenient! Best Christmas present EVAR! <3

  10. Boz says:

    Good afternoon:

This is completely off-topic, but I tanked Trial of the Champion (normal) yesterday in all i200 gear with my bear with only one wipe on the Confessor, and I was considering trying to tank a few heroics. I’ve read your pet tanking guide (thanks for that, by the way) and I was wondering if you had:
1 – A list of the heroics you believe are pet-tankable
2 – The heroics you have tanked yourself
3 – Any feedback you had from the healers or different healing classes (to let them know what to expect)

Even just a list of viable heroics would be great.

    Cheers.

  11. Kantsuu says:

Boz, you’ll probably want to talk to Arthemystia about that; he’s the one that put together all of the pet tanking guides.

  12. quivering says:

you realize youre gonna have to start hosting audio segments now, right? you cannot deny us the hate and wit that your raid chat snapshots have gotten us addicted to.

  13. Cameron says:

Frost, your ears probably hurt because you’re not use to the headset, give it time and I’m sure they will get comfortable.

And if they don’t, crush them. :P

  14. Aerlynn says:

Voice communication is awesome while playing WoW especially in raiding, its alot better than typing stuff out then you look at your screen and realize you just got crit by a monstaaaaa.

  15. Purp says:

Gunna need to get some vent recordings on here, even just post the sound on youtube and link it. :D
Gunna miss all of the hilariously funny screeny’s of guild or raid chat xD

  16. Fradin says:

Yeah headsets can be a pain i would recommend Logitech i brought a receptionist usb set as they wear them all day long to transfer calls and mine is very comfortable but i have noticed they have released a gamers set thats behind the head that looks nice the G330 gamers headset for $50.00 US . Glad you liked the voice once you have it you find you can’t live without it. Address is http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/speakers_audio/headphones/&cl=us,en

    See what you think .

  17. Ablimoth says:

    Gyar!!!! I’ve had enough!!!

Please stop posting ‘Overall’ recount numbers. All that shows is that you AoE’d better than the other players (ok, ToC would be the exception because there is no trash).

other than that, I love your site!

  18. Frostheim says:

I disagree about the overall recount reports. In Naxx that was certainly more true, but in Ulduar there wasn’t nearly as much aoe, and in TotC of course there’s no trash at all.

I always use overall because I feel it gives the best reflection of overall dps contribution to the raid — any given boss fight might favor you or your class, or you might have been lucky (no slag pots on Ignis, etc.) or whatever. But over enough bosses, that stuff tends to average out. If there was a way to make recount ignore trash I’d do it in a heartbeat.

However, I will try to make a point of grabbing the occasional screenshot of single bosses as well as the overall. Alas we don’t have any new Patchwerks that are truly representative in the new content.

  19. Ablimoth says:

Koralon would be close, although not perfect. But no, there is no straight tank’n'spank anymore (yay!).

  20. Jgulr - Lethon says:

Koralon has to be the closest i would agree – did 6900 dps with no Hero and none of my CD’s but call of the wild of which is bugged for me and i cannot turn it off lol. Was the best i have seen from myself in awhile and was really nice to see!

  21. Jgulr - Lethon says:

ALSO – did you guys really just start using vent??? omg! nubs!!!! lol – no j/k you guys are great i just cant believe that you just started using vent! honestly pretty impressive to me, vent is just a necessary when playing.
