A Good Night

10-man raid night.

Our 10-man raid has problems, this is true. Summer has hit us like it’s hit many raids, and it’s been a long time since we’ve been able to actually get our two raid nights in a week. The result is frustrating — we keep clearing the same Ulduar bosses each week, then on our follow-up night we’re missing one or two people and end up skipping the raid, with the knowledge that we’ll be starting all over, again, the following week.

On Tuesday we had yet another clear of all farm bosses (despite some tardation on some of them) and last night it looked like for the first time in a long time we’d have a full group and get to finally work on some new content.

So there I was fifteen minutes before the raid: I had all my consumables, I was repaired, I was sitting outside the Ulduar entrance, waiting for a couple more people before starting invites. I was playing in windowed mode so I could also answer WHU emails, and I was tinkering around with a cool new plugin for the site. The plugin was written by a non-native english speaker so there were some interesting translations. I decided to go into the raw code to try to fix some of those, and of course I ended up killing the entire site. I couldn’t even access the backend.

Then with a POP the power went out. In the whole house. The entire block. And oh look, about time to start invites. If I had a dog, that’s right about when he would barf on my priceless 100 year old bonsai, assuming I had one of those too.

So that’s how the night started.

A candlelit hour later the power came back on, I went back online. The raid still hadn’t formed, and even with me back online we were one short. I went to try to fix the WHU, which I eventually did (and once again told myself that I should really be backing this thing up). Then Arust logged on and in we went — to finally tackle Hodir after a month of not even being able to get an attempt on him.

We were trying a new plan on Hodir — we always die around the 2nd frozen blows, so this time we were going to try to lessen the strain on our healers by putting everyone across the board in FrR gear. A few attempts later and Hodir finally went down. Hell yes! Don’t get me wrong, I know he’s no end boss, but back when last we could get two full nights in we wiped on him at least a dozen times in the evening, and more times before that, and before that. So let me tell you it felt good. Really good.

Then we moved on to Thorim.

We were running out of time, but on our third or fourth attempt (2nd attempt at actually getting to Thorim), like magic, he went down. In fact he was pretty easy, once we learned the abilities of all the guys on the timed gauntlet run and could get to Hodir with no problems.

So despite losing tons of time, over a third of our raid time slot, we had two new boss kills. We’re finally more than halfway through Ulduar. And hopefully we can pick up the pace now, add Hodir at least to our first night of clearing. Push deeper into Ulduar.

Yeah, sometimes despite everything, it’s a good night’s raiding.

Progression nights are satisfying -- but they really hurt the damage meters.

Grats on your firsts! My ten man spent something like 6 hours working on Vezax last weekend, and I’m not afraid to admit when we finally got the bastard I shed a tear. That was without a doubt the most frustrated I’ve ever been with raiding.

We like to wipe on Hodir for no good reason too, or occasionally other farm bosses. Then our MT / Guild Leader gets pissed at everyone. And two hunters end up leading the dps charts, though I’m usually second…

    ….wait. Am I Arust?

No, wait, I’m Horde. I can’t be. Still, the similarities are uncanny. Our Shaman healer is cheerleader, our occasional pally healer gets the AFK moniker, and everyone’s a bit suspicious when our MT is in a good mood. I like reading raid posts, because it’s like looking into the past or future. If an incident hasn’t happened with our group yet, it probably will at some point. Now if we could just get one of these mythical good nights…

Congrats on your firsts, especially hodir! Our ten man managed to get FL +3 down last night took a bit of dieing and readjusting how we were doing some things but we did it and it felt good. Theres nothing better than getting a boss down and having good team work, and hearing everyone over vents shout YES!!! good job everyone.
In our 25 man the other day we did hodir ( we did have a couple of noobs, myself included i had only done the fight once before) we wiped several times people seemed to not understand to not get frozen. I was that person the first 2 times as i couldn’t see the runes at all, so i had to up everything on my screen (makes my computer laggy as heck) but sad to say i only got to try a couple more times before they called the raid and left hodir up. Seems like our 25Man have been rather chaotic lately for my guild. People are extremely grouchy and that night we even had two initiates ninjalog. Which imo is wrong and they need to be booted or not invited to raids for a while. but im not an officer.
10 man again tonight and heres to hoping we can actually clear a few more bosses :)

you need only turn on projected textures for the icicle stuff. It will show you were the stuff will land. All my other settings are on minimum and I have no problems.

Congrats Frost its a nice feeling when you finally down a boss after so many attempts , unfortunately we had 4 of our officers leave our guild including the GM for another so i got a promotion and we got a new leader so it will be a while before we get back into uldar. However on the brightside everyone seems alot more happier under the new leadership so we decided to hit up nax with some of our noobs and managed to clear 2 quarters with only 2 wipes and half of them had never been there felt so good to down the 4 horseman again and we were pleasantly surprised how well everybody learned the new fights so things are looking up for the future.

Sometimes even on a progression night its possible to have a good time raiding. A rare occurence I know. Raiding is only there to destroy our souls and consume time. It feeds on time like a whale feeds on plankton. But now and again a whale finds a piece of plankton that drops an epic tooth and he’s the better for it and therefore happier.

The moral of the story is that whales are evil and you can’t trust them.

    Grats on the kills.
