Arust and I are going camping this weekend, assuming we find a campsite (some wrenches thrown into the plan at the last moment) where we’ll no doubt tell tall tales of slaying dragons and conquering undead hordes around the flickering light of the campfire.
One area of discussion that always comes up when we hang out is the WHU, and what the top priority guides are that we need to get done.
Since we first started it I’ve had a list running in the back of my mind of the guides that I need to get written, and suddenly I find that I’m just about done with the list. Don’t get me wrong, there’s tons more on my want to do list, but I feel we’ve finally reached a place where all the basics are up here.
So while we’re out conquering nature, with our down sleeping bags and coolers or booze (yeah, it’s that kind of camping – the wussy kind) I’d like to ask you, the dedicated members of the Warcraft Hunters Union, what else you’d like to see us tackle on the site.
To Get Things Started
Just to get things off the ground, here are a handful of ideas that I’ve been kicking around, or that people have suggested to me:
- An addon guide
- Jump-shotting / kiting tutorial video
- Boss strat guides from a hunter perspective (and if so, bother with naxx, or just Ulduar?)
- Extreme soloing guides – section focusing on gear, spec, etc just for extreme soloing
- Moar Frostheim Boss Hunter vids!
- WHU Forums (I keep getting requests for this, and I keep resisting)
- A Hrist the Hate Tank spin-off blog
- More achievement guides
- Guest bloggers
- More Arust blogs
- Just plain more blog posts
- More WoW news reporting (I usually only post hunter-specific news, and only if it’s pretty significant, figuring that most people use other news sites for the latest info).
And that’s just what I have sitting on the top of my head — so you tell me, what of these would you like to see? What that we haven’t thought of would you like to see?

Actually camping in Minnesota looks more like this. But we're gonna try to find a river site. Well honestly we're just gonna try to find any site at all without having to drive 3 hours away from the cities.

I would love to see a Jump-shot guide!!
A Hate tank spin off would be great also. That said, any and all other classes would be great. 8P I have not found another resource for any other class as complete as this one.
Resist the forums!!!!!

The blog ratio is already fairly high. No need to give yourself more work. And I’d personally hate to see the focus come off of Hunters and cover all aspects of the game. Not that information is bad, but you guys do “hunter blogs” really, really well. Expansion might dilute that. A Hrist tank-centered blog might be hilarious, though. But I don’t tank, so I don’t have personal interest.
Jump-shotting seems like it will be helpful for many. And an add-on guide would give many people ideas who dislike their interface. I’d rank those fairly high.
I’m personally going to try to tackle some additional aspects of pet tanking in an effort to contribute to that realm here at the WHU. That aspect of hunter-ing is extremely fun for me right now, and I’d enjoy seeing more about it. I also want to actually beat you to one of these solo’ing novelties, since you seem ever so slightly ahead of me when it comes to them.

Boss and achievement guides might be useful, but I don’t see them as necessary. And forget Nax. I’d stick with the highest end-game content first, then work your way down if you ever get there.
I think your first two ideas are the best: addon guide and jumpshot/kiting guide. Thanks for all of your great work on this blog!
I’d love a boss guide. Now, as from my own selfish perspective I’d like it to start at Naxx, because I just started playing this year and am only now getting in there. But I could understand the desire just to start at Ulduar.
I’d also like to see what you think of the various addons out there.
BTW, just found this site the other day and I love it. Tons of information, with lots of depth but clearly presented and understandable. And I like the tone of the writing too — plenty of confidence and swagger, without being, well, elitist jerks
* I always love the videos! Make more
If you your looking for a quick camping getaway, both my family and my kids Cub Scout pack
like to go to Lebenon Hills in Eagan/Apple Valley: http://www.exploreminnesota.com/listing.aspx?EntityID=2292
They also have a group camp sites that are bigger, and a bit more private. The groups sites cost more, but they provide the firewood and have great campfire set ups. No water near the groups sites either. Call the park if you are interest in that. We went June 13th, and the group sites were mostly empty.
BTW, The wood and deer ticks are very bad right now.
I vote for the kiting video – its been a long time since i tried to kite Drak away from the group, twice, both times wiping. but i made it to the bridge the second time!
But yeah, it just seems like a really useful skill – I’ve been a hunter for a long time, and I always regret not being able to kite properly, when my sod flatmate whose highest hunter is lvl 24 can kite indefinatly.

my 2 cents, fwiw
fun vids that you do, like extreme soloing, id say do that all you want. if thats fun for you, thats all that matters.
I wouldnt worry about achievement guides, WoW news, or boss vids. we got plenty of wow news sites and id hate to see your focus distracted on that. achievement posts id do as YOU want to, as a fun thing, but again id hate to see your distracted with that. the boss strat vids from a hunter POV would be nice, but i personally think we could live without that. that would be just another thing to keep up with, and theres plenty of vids of various encounters available. i see this as a nice, though a bit superflous addition.
hrist blog would be full of win. guest bloggers and arust blogs, all those would be awesome. kiting and jump shotting would be nice, as these are hunter staple abilities. i could benefit from a circle kiting strat, i never got that down pat. straight line kiting im fine with.
addon guide, imo, would be the most beneficial. addons can make or break a players dps and efficiency
my 2 cents boils down to 2 points when you strip everything away. point 1, dont let us make this a job for you. if you get burnt out or burdened with something you really dont want to do, we all lose. its a great thing youre doing, i wouldnt wanna see that disrupted. i heard a wise man say that if you want to make a man fail at his goal, give him another one. broken focus *can* be destructive. point 2, i would hate to see you spend a lot of time and energy into things that doesnt further the cause of the site, which i understand it to be along the lines of something you said in a post a while back “my only loyalty is to dps.” obviously theres fun posts and information post, but i would hate to see your time and energy divided a dozen ways, only for that main focus to falter.
or so it seems to me.
have fun yall
Don’t be tempted to stray too far away from your core – do what you know. That’s the motto of any solid writer, and you guys are doing great. My vote would be a boss strat guide from a strictly hunter perspective! And please include the hunter loot from each boss too
Would love to see more blogs on theory crafting Vs Real gameplay.
For example, recently a lot of other “Hunter” Forums and discussion is based on Gems/enchanting for Arp rather than Agi as MM to do max dps. That is great on a spreadsheet and a forum showing how elite you are (that could be a clue
) but when you get to your raid and you find out you can’t actually stand and nuke and the Raid leader is shouting at you to stay alive – well that extra 500dps is not going to help you.
The flexibility to switch between 2 specs on Ulduar hard modes is important and if you gem for Arp well im afraid my SV spec suffers a great deal but if I spec Agi then my SV is fine and I only lose a little of that “extra 500″ dps as MM. So in theory yes MM with Arp is best but not flexible i.e. MM is 100% effective but when switching to SV for a fight well you only operate at 70% because of the Arp gems. If you choose Agi gems then your MM will be at 90% as effective as it could be and your SV will be 100% as effective as it can be – yes its not the max dps you could do but its maybe more balanced?
Sorry for the essay but a full description of what goes through some hunter’s head at the moment may give you some direction with future ideas etc.
Love WHU and long may it continue
* Jump shot/kiting
* Extreme soloing
Although I am tempted to vote for a few other things, the great beauty of this site is that it is focussed on well updated, clearly written, entertaining HUNTER information.
Other sites I look at, mainly for my tank, are in no way so clear or well updated.
The fact that you change the original guide, rather than burdening the guide with hundreds of “update” posts, is a really effective and unique method.
And I’ve already asked Hrist if he would do a tank blog – sadly he said no. *sigh*
Oh, and although I’d love it, I think a forum is a bad idea as well – they can easily spin out of control.
My vote is for some boss guides on the more difficult fights (for hunters).

This is what i want to se in here.
More achievement guides <— REALLY WOULD LOVE THIS
Boss strat guides from a hunter perspective (and if so, bother with naxx, or just Ulduar?) <– well would you would feel . many dont know naxx but more ppl dont know ulduar.
Extreme soloing guides – section focusing on gear, spec, etc just for extreme soloing <– could be so cool.
Moar Frostheim Boss Hunter vids!
best regards

I’m with, what looks like, the majority on this. I’d love to see a jumpshot/kiting guide and an add-on guide.
Also, people seem to be able to voice their opinions via these comment boxes anyway so is a forum really necessary? It’d take a lot more effort to manage and it wouldn’t look as tidy. It might seem daft but that’s one of the main reasons I enjoy this site; it’s clear and concise.

Please remind Arust he cannot tame bears IRL.

Enjoy your camping trip and stop trying to coerce me into making a blog.
C’mon Hrist, you know you want to! Imagine being able to vent your hate to the masses! Hmm… psychodynamic theory would then suggest that venting all your anger might make you less mean in the long run, so… erm… never mind blog writing!
Would love to see an extreme soloing guide. Would be great for gold and achievements.
Kiting and jump shooting would be great as well. I agree that there are plenty of videos and guides for bosses such that it would be a waste of your time. Maybe an updated best in slot gear guide for Ulduar and beyond based on actual gameplay rather than depending on theorycrafting.
Come on Hrist – you know you want to *grin*

actually a gear guide may be beneficial to, prolly more so for weapons.
i have a theory. i take all possible upgrade weapons and compare them. i compare the 2h against all possible 1h combinations to see whats best. i pick a couple of things to aim for and stay focused on them. because hunters share weapon skills with so many melee classes, this minimizes the “hunter loot” drama. i see hunters that dont do homework and just roll on anything that drops they can hold and i really dont care for that method. end up hoarding weapons and taking them from deserving people. thats just how i do it, i focus on a couple and try to get them, instead of rolling on everything.

I would like to see an article about keyboard level play style. I personally am very clumbsy when it comes to trying to launch attacks using my keys (I don’t type). I use my mouse for almost everything. I know this has to hurt my DPS. I was at GENCON a year ago and noticed that most of the people trying out the game at the Bliz booth were also using the mouse for everything. I’ve found almost nougthing written about keyboard level play styles and strategies and would be interested in seeing something written here. Do you move with your mouse? Do you use AWD? etc…. Discussion about these sort of things. BTW, this is probably the BEST hunter site I’ve come across. I really appreciate the advice I’ve read here.
Yes, PvP would be extremly helpful
And I LOVE this site, WHU ftw!!!!!!!!

I’d love to see:
An addon guide
Boss strat guides from a hunter perspective (Ulduar first, Naxx if you have more time)
Extreme soloing guides – section focusing on gear, spec, etc just for extreme soloing
I think this would also be nice for newer hunters:
Jump-shotting / kiting tutorial video
And I also believe resisting forums to be the best decision.
I think a addon guide would be awesome i use a few but there are so many and with most having no instructions what so ever its like try and see and if nothing happens delete it lol . I installed power auras but nothing seem to happen so i just removed it as i wouldnt have the foggest on were to start if it doesnt auto start . So far got Auctioner, cartographer, deadly boss mods , pawn, and im about to look into omen as it would be nice to have a tthreat meter . But whatever you do please keep up the good work this sites rocks!!!!.
Love the website–it’s very informative
In terms of things to add:
A guide to useful hunter addons would be excellent.
Tutorials are a great idea: kiting, jump-shotting, chain trapping,
A PvP Guide (including Gear/specs/strategies) of some kind would be really nice: that doesn’t seem to have been discussed much on the site.
I agree with Stokes–I do not think a forum is necessary at the moment. Also forums are a lot of work to maintain, and finding useful information among the clutter can be difficult.
My last sugesstion is: keep this site a home for hunter-related information only. Trying to do everything will probably exhaust you considering the time you guys take to test things in game. For WoW news and general information, maybe just provide links to popular sites on your website or other helpful blogs about hunters & other things.
Thanks for the work you do! Hunters everywhere appreciate it

The reason I keep coming back is the guides and suggestions you make regarding being a good hunter and not a huntard. The solo stuff doesnt really bother me but I really like the spec tweaks and shot ideas you use to making us really great hunters.
I reckon addons, kiting and maybe 3.2 trapping.
I’d like a “link to other classes” section. We ALL have alts and I’d like to find more info on making them better as well. As of yet, I’ve NOT found a site as good as this one for any other class, maybe you guys could recommend a few decent ones?
Addons and UI’s would be great, I’m always looking for different setups.
Well I had my @rse handed to me last night by a lvl 77 pally, further proving my poor skills at PvP. Even a basic build/pet/enchant guide and basic Hunter strategy to PvP would be useful. With Dual Spec we can then quest/farm in PvP mode waiting for some poor schmuck to try it on, then switch to PvE spec when raiding.
I realise its not your guys level of expertise, but maybe there are fellow readers who could comment?
I’ve looked on the web for this info, and nothing comes close to the awesome, well thought out, researched info that we get with WHU.

Interesting comment from Grihm regarding playing styles, I am also a ‘mouse’ user for all attacks/spells along with view-panning and just use the keyboard W-A-S-D for moving around. Is this the most efficient way or is keyboard-mashing more productive? Great site by the way, I find it an invaluable resource as I’m currently leveling up a Tauren Hunter. Maybe some more guide on leveling as well as all the endgame stuff you do (e.g. shot cycles for us lower levels). Maybe also discussions of the advantages/disadvantages that each race brings to the hunter spec.?

Pretty much agree 100% with Shyrak. Those are also my interests, and a discussion on the BEST addons (and even specifics, like how you have Power Auras exactly configured, for example) would be very informative.
Hope the Camping mobs weren’t too hard!
@ Nnof and Grihm: Dig out the manual or consult help to see the keyboard commands. You’re missing out big time by not Strafing. (Is it possible to strafe with the mouse I wonder?) Strafing is a very important way of facing the mob while running away. Strafe right = E and strafe left = Q. Practice makes perfect.
I would like a Macro guide for Raiding, i dont know if it sounds stupid but ive never macro’ed before, and for those of us who have the bad habit of looking to out cooldowns, a Macro guide will be awesome!
