You know, as horrible as it was to get super nerfed, then nerfed again, then stealth nerfed, then nerfed again — it’s now paying off. After dreading every blue post and patch note, we hunters are finally in a place where Blizz has aknowledged that we’re a bit too weak and scale poorly with gear.
Now every time we hear something about hunters it’s good news. Here is the latest good news:
Ammo is too expensive
We agree with the comments that ammo costs have gotten too high. It was acceptable when hunters realistically did not die as often, and thus didn’t have high repair bills. But it has gotten too high now.Pet scaling
Pets need to scale better. As soon as you have a hunter choosing say AP over crit because one helps the pet and the other doesn’t then that’s a problem.Traps in PvP
I’m not sure if the healer can out-heal your damage or not. That’s a longer discussion about how much damage a healer should have to heal through and if the only healer counter should be CC. But we did design the hunter around having potent CC, and we don’t think their CC feels scary any longer. Traps are probably in most need of some attention here. We’ll try and go into more detail in the class Q&A if it isn’t too far away.
So for the first topic, ammo… I have no idea what this means. Is this a hint that they’re finally going to implement the “non-consumable” ammo idea that they wanted for patch 3.1, or are they just going to lower the cost of vendor ammo? Or will they make the engineering ammo much cheaper to make? Or maybe put in a new vendor who sells the engineering ammo for a silver a stack? (I can hear engineers everywhere weep at the thought of losing their only way to make money).
Pet scaling is, without question, the thing that we hunters are most excited about. If you’ll recall from the last time that Blizz talked about it, they said they were going to make pets scale with resilience, and could conceivably add any other stat to the scaling. So at that time they were clearly looking at PVP, and it’s really nice to see them now clearly implementing this across the board!
What really interests me about pet scaling is what stats they’ll have crossover. It seems crit for certain, we already get AP and Hit — but we’ll probably also see haste and armor pen. But will we get any more defensive stats? Specifically I’m thinking Dodge, which could allow for some new levels of extreme soloing. But what if they also had the Defense stat transfer in part to your pet? Then you could legitimately collect a set of avoidance gear for your pet tanking (though you dps would be total garbage).
Now that would be cool.
I should also point out that in Patch 3.2 Blizz will be giving professions a bit of an update, mostly to scale their unique profession enchants to keep pace with gear, it seems. Mining gets more stamina, skinning gets more crit, etc. etc. You can see the full list of what they’re doing Here.
yeah, ammo cost on top of a 60g repair bill is no fun. glad skinning is getting a crit buff i was just about to drop it for jc. thanks for keeping us updated frost.
It sounds very good, I levelled engineering mostly because ammo was so expensive, but I don’t dare to hope for anything until I see it. I really like the idea of armour for pets, I hope they will implement it some day. I don’t have much hope for that though.
This is all Hawtsauce, but will be nicer when it’s actually implemented. We were promised no consumable ammo before, you know.
And I used a trap to pull Auriaya yesterday. It was the first time in….well, a while. CC does need a substantial change. Wyvern is the only PvP-centered power I normally ever use.
Now, if Blizz improves trap damage, won’t that penalize the SV hunter? With BA tied to the same cooldown, I rarely have a trap available when I might suddenly want it. For example, when battling Ignis or Freya, using the Frost Trap is helpful, but helpful enough to lose the effects and bonuses of BA?
I would be excited about better pet scaling and more DPS. Of course, I’d also like to see the pets level a little quicker when the hunter is already lvl 80. I recently picked up a lvl 75 wolf, but since I’m only really running Ulduar 25man – he isn’t leveling. I hit up a heroic for the first time in months. arggg.
Keep in mind when they’re talking about traps, they’re talking about CC. So frost and freezing traps, which would not affect PVE much at all.
Honestly one way to fix traps would be to let you damage people while they’re stuck in your frost trap. Maybe give it a minuscule chance to break on damage. Sure, it would be broken, but it would be on par with abilities of most other classes. (rogue, pally, shaman, warlock, priest, mage). Would also make it more useful for PVE, since as it stands now Death Knights literally cannot not break a trap (or so they tell me) making our raid CC pointless as well.
There’s lvl 80 wolves available for taming in Storm Peaks, Diax.
Yeah being a Enchanter /Tailor hunter i buy my Mammoth Cutters at about 20-25g per 1000 rounds but you can only get them from AH since a engineer must make them so if Frostbite bullets fall in valve i cant see the mammoth cutters dropping unless they make them available from vendors. Everytime i go to AH i always buy 10 stacks of bullets at least wouldnt want to run out in a raid ! and there not always available on my server. As for pet scaling cant wait this could open up alot more soloing possiblities and maybe it will make BM a spec worth keeping . I am just starting to raid uldar so im still in SV spec and was looking to change my BM spec to MM once i got some more gear looks like it might be worth hanging off to see what happens.
I can eat the cost of ammo. I knew going in it would cost. But I keep hoping to hear from Ghostcrawler that they are finally going to scale hunter damage up to match with the rest of the geared raid members. Adding the bonus to ONLY 25 man specific boss drop ranged weapons sucks – especially if you are a troll who prefers bows. /end QQ
Finally… some hunter love, it’s about time. I like the idea of less expensive ammo for sure. Although it’s fairly easy to eat that cost, it adds up over time. Now being raiding hunters as we are, most of us solely rely on engineered ammo. Blizz is likely to entirely mess this up and only discount vendor ammo… tisk, tisk.
I’m curious if pet scaling would give us enough added damage to bring BM back from the depths of retirement? Hmmm…
Well the ammo change isn’t such a big deal for me regarding mammoth cutters since I’m really, really lazy about farming gold and paying overpriced charges for Mammoth Cutters. I still use Timeless Shells from Scale of Sands.
Maybe if they make Mammoth Cutters available from a vendor I might be more interested.
