Long time WHU member Vael had this interesting story in the comments:

My guildies are currently putting together a 5-man Pally VS. Druid race thru UK, and I want to play along. Think a group of Hunters who know there stuff (and have some bad ass tenacity pets in the stable, of course) could compete?

UK is soloable by a single hunter, so hunters could certainly do this; however, beating the pally’s will be hard as heck. Possible? Maybe — hardest part is getting 5 good hunters together.

Since this is a fascinating thought experiment, I thought it’d be worth looking into. Let’s see if the combined brain power of the WHU can find a winning strat for Vael. Here’s how I would do it:

The Team

I’d have 2 BM hunters with tenacity pets, tank builds, and tanking glyphs (mending, beastial wrath). You probably only really need 1, but I figure it’s worth it to have a backup since you can’t afford any lost time. The other 3 hunters would be MM or SV, with optimal single-target dps builds.

The Set Up

Assign one BM hunter as your main tank, and the other is a backup. All pets should have some kind of speed boost – either Charge or dash.  The MM/SV hunters should have Heart of the Phoenix on their pets for instant rez.

All the hunters should have their MD macros set to the main tank pet – except one MM/SV with one dedicated to the offtank pet. Everyone should be flasked with Endless Rage, have well fed food, food for the pets, and also have health potions, mana potions, and bandages.

Ideally all hunters would have the PVP trinket, and would have the minor run speed enchant to pick up their movement a bit.

There will be no time to stop and drink — that spells failure. Viper and pots should cover your mana regen needs, and as you will see, you won’t be fighting that much anyway.

The General Strategy

My overall strategy, which is pure evil, is what just might make this winnable for the hunters. Here it is:

Don’t fight the mobs.

Seriously, you just can’t gather up as many to aoe as the pallys or druids can. Here’s what you do: you get in the instance, and a BM hunter sicks his pet on the mobs inside the door, then you just run past. The next BM hunter sicks his pets on the next group of mobs, and you all run past. Keep doing this.

If you toss a mend pet on your pet before running past, your pet should stay alive long enough for you to get out of range and the pet will vanish. Once you’ve cleared a good amount of space, all of the hunters FD, and the mobs will reset. Note: this will only work if there are no pets for the mobs to go after! It’s probably best for the MM/SV hunters to have their pets dismissed and only call them when needed.

The reason I say the BM hunters send their pets in first is this: the first couple you are guaranteed to get far enough away that the pet will vanish. The later ones the pets might still be close enough to not vanish and could get killed. The MM/SV hunter pets are disposable and if they die, oh well, you got Heart of the Phoenix for insta rez.

The hunter sending in his pet should have a misdirect on it to tag any mobs the pet misses. Also the hunters should leave a trail of frost traps to slow down anything that does come after them.

This general strat will let you make crazy fast progress through the instance and you should only have to actually kill the mobs right before a given boss.

Boss 1: Prince Keleseth

Kill the 4 mobs immediately before the boss. Then all hunters should dismiss their pets except for the main tank. Send in the pet and cycle your misdirects. When the first wave of skeletons comes – all hunters need to FD and stay FD for a bit. The skeletons will leave, and never come back.

Then bring out all the pets and blow the boss away. This fight is helped if you have the PVP trinket to break you out of the frost trap. Big red pet will also break you out.

Boss 2: Skarvald & Dalronn

You’ll have to round up and aoe down the mobs before the twin bosses. Send main tank pet after Skarvald and backup tank pet after Dalronn. Split your dps between the two and blow all cooldowns, go all out and burn them down. It should be very short and very easy.

Boss 3: Ingvar the Plunderer

Kill the last set of mobs before the boss — you may have to deal with the ones before that as well. This boss is super easy for a pet tank to handle. Just send in the main pet tank, misdirect cycle, blow all cooldowns, and he’s done. It’s a cakewalk.

Be Flexible, and Practice

The running past the mobs thing is the key to doing this fast. And, on occasion, things will go wrong. You’ll screw something up, have a pet chain the mobs to you, etc. A good group of hunters will only lose a minute or so from this, with the pet tank gathering them and 5 hunter aoe downing them in no time.

However, it’s important to stress that you cannot be cautious at all. You must send in the pet, and then FLY on through. You should know your pet order so people are ready. You should never be standing still waiting while you’re going through mobs except for when you all have to FD. Some kind of vent is probably very helpful in making this work.

Most important is getting in there ahead of time to practice. The bosses are the easy part — it’s managing to skip over the mobs at full speed that will take some work.

And Vael — I hope you have 4 other hunters in your guild capable of doing this, ’cause I’d love to hear how it goes!

Anyone else have suggestions to add? (Note: please no suggestions involving profession-specific things. Let’s find a generic hunter strat).

I love your strat Frost especially the run past and feign death thing that will definitely get you some time there especially since you can use cheetah or aspect of the pack to run even faster i think its definitely do able. Infact now looking at it im sure the hunters have a excellent chance of coming out on top the only other class that would be hard to beat is rogues . I wish we had 5 good hunters in my guild as i would like to give it go sounds like it would be very interesting and great fun competing against the clock and different classes.

  2. Frostheim says:

Keep in mind the druids can just stealth past the trash. The hunter advantage is rather than moving slow, we can move extra fast while doing it.

  3. quivering says:

    wow thats pretty genius.

  4. MrJackdaw says:

I’ve done similar things when soloing before. If the hunters are Night Elves don’t forget Shadowmeld gives them a second FD should they screw-up. Not that this will happen of course.

  5. Arthemystia says:

My only additions to your advice are cursory things:
    - The MT should be gemmed and ‘chanted for AP instead of agility, to maximize pet damage (and thus threat). I also roll with an Austere Earthsiege Diamond on an old helm for my pet-tank gear. Stam + increased armor. Both translate to the pet.
    - At least one MM and one SV is a must. Not all one or the other. Mana batteries + Trueshot. Maximizes everything.
    - Maybe have one of the SV hunters not quite optimzed for dps, and throw in some CC stuff. Could help in a pinch, and 5 good hunters will be >>> dps than the other groups anyway.

Sounds epic. Kick their asses Vael.

    :D

  6. Gamgan says:

Might help to have a plan before going in as to the FD locations. A printed zone map, and a little scouting ahead of time with tracking can help you find some * safe * spots to avoid patrols while you lick your wounds if any from dodging mobs.

Some extra speed pots, a gnomish pocket knife for a chance to rez( yes engineer only- but lot of hunters are eng for the free rounds !!)

Is there any invisiblity pots in the game? I know there where some trinkets but dont know if theres any pots for this

  7. Kayoon says:

What a great idea!!! You will have to tell us all how it pans out.. better yet record the thing so we can see it!
Wish my guild had 5 hunters period! There’s only 3 of us at the moment (well regulars, but there are a couple of alts but really… they don’t count)

  8. Purp says:

One thing I swould change (not really a strat at all) is simply instead of setting people for specific md macros for tank or OT just have them each have one for both ._.
Also, once again, you’ve proven your genius. I really want to try this out with my guild now, I bet we could beat those pally’s. They’ll just be happy we’re not there to bug them for buffs.

  9. Armin says:

Invisiblity pots with cheeta on, are pretty much a mandatory item I would guess. Or at least a very usefull addition to the Frost tips. They would make certain parts a lot easier.

Using them I for instance got my SSC attunement during BC, because nobody was willing to join me at that time to deliver the quest …

  10. silentdante says:

isnt UK the instance you can’t run past the trash mobs at the beginning because you have to clear them out to remove the fire walls? or is that heroic only? i have never run it on regular, haha!

    Great strat though, souns fun!

  11. Vael says:

You all rock and rock hard!! Thanks much for the strategies…I hadn’t even thought about the pet distance despawning trick, but that could be a GREAT way to buy some time (especially when racing those sneeeeky kitties.)
And I’m glad to her your thoughts on Ingvar – I too, thought it would be pretty cake for a tough-pet tank to handle, so that was reassuring to hear. *grin*
I may have to recruit another good hunter to run this with us, but she’s pretty game – so heres hping I’ll have some “Pally vs. Druid vs. HUNTER” results to entertain you with here soon! Thanks again!

  12. Zyrinx says:

You just have to aggro the guy operating the bellows to remove each fire wall in turn. Many people, myself included, soloed the Elder that was in this dungeon during the Holiday Event this way.

  13. Yorigrim says:

Yeah, you have to clear the trash in that first room with the fire, but it shouldn’t be too hard, plus everyone else will have to do that as well so it’s not something that is necessarily a problem.

  14. Blackthorne (Vaellix's GM) says:

figures, the only way a hunter group can win is to CHEAT! run past mobs and Feign death tsk tsk tsk

BTW the original plan was for Heroic UK and to do a full clear. But after further consideration, and in order to prevent those devious hunters from cheating, I am thinking a full clear of VH might be a better. can”t FD past those mobs :) .

  15. Frostheim says:

I don’t think the strat is cheating — I think it’s using our class abilities to the greatest advantage, which is what we do. It’s how we become the death dealers that we are :)

However, if you want to change the rules to add a handicap, why not also handicap the other classes. Such as: no stealthing for the druids, or no bubbling for the pallies

FYI: VH is a timed event — a race through VH basically just means who can kill the last dragon fastest. Barring wipes, it will take everyone literally exactly the same amount of time to get to the dragon.

  16. Kantsuu says:

Frost, you are some kind of mad genius. XD
This sounds like a lot of fun, it’d be great if someone was taking a vid of all three runs for all three classes and we could compare them to see how each class uses their abilities to tackle this challenge! (Barring the Pallies, of course, as there’s no creative way to spam AoE and bubbles). Good luck, Vael!

  17. Blackthorne (Vaellix's GM) says:

Ya I wasn’t sure if the portals spawned at a set rate or if they spawned X seconds after the last mob died or the max time allowed, which ever came first. It just seemed that the total time to complete the instnace was much less with a very well geared group. but it could just be me….

But anyway the original intent was to FULLY clear the instance not by pass mobs. For as you said druids could just stealh past most of the instance and thus it wouldnt’ be much of a race. I commend you on your creative thinking in how to run the instnace with an all hunter group. The reason we thoguht of druid vs pallies was because they are the only 2 clases with a Tank, Heal and Dps spec. The original conversation was more about which would be better to raid 10mans with, all pallies or all druids. The race idea was just something fun we thought to try.

Of course the next question would be which would win in an 5 man PvP team, but i don’t really do much in PvP :)

  18. Frostheim says:

VH spawns on a set time. If you wait too long, you get multiples at once. If you kill them really fast, you sit around waiting *forever*

Pallys? Pfah. Druids? Pfah. A Jedi craves not these things. Hunters are tank, heal, and dps all in the same spec!

Best 10mans would clearly be all hunters.

5v5 team would be pallies, but either way it would be a long fight.
