As many of you no doubt already know, in yesterday’s patch Blizzard made a wee tweak to ranged weapons. Specifically, ranged weapons with item level 226 or higher were getting their dps boosted!
Now they never said by how much, so I was eager to check out my Envoy of Mortality as soon as I logged in for a night of painful raiding. My gun went from about 154 dps to about 176 dps. A boost of over 20 dps! That is awesomesauce!
The logic behind this, by the way, has to do with how Blizzard likes to taunt us hunters mercilessly.
I’m sure you all remember before patch 3.1 when blizz announced that they were going to do away with consumable ammo and do something unspecified but cool in its place. Of course then they changed their mind and decided they couldn’t get around to it, what with all the hunter nerfs they were busy implementing.
Well… part of a hunter’s scaling with higher levels and higher gear levels is us getting new ammo. We should have gotten a new kind of ammo for Ulduar level raiding. But we didn’t, because they thought ammo as we know it would be gone by then. So as the powers that be look at the hunter class slipping behind with high-end gear, they start to realize the error.
So rather than try to come up with a new level of ammo on the fly, they just boosted the dps of the high end guns. And, frankly, I think we can agree this is a fantastic solution for us. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still looking forward to whatever they do to improve ammo, and hopefully make it nice and customizable (and still crafted by engineers). But I’m also thrilled to have gotten a free upgrade overnight.
It makes me happy in my pants.

I’m still a wee bit bitter, since I’m in Ulduar with the Kel 10-man gun, so no DPS boost for me. Ammo would have been yummy!
Maybe the Random Loot Gods will someday smile and grace me with an ilevel 226 shootey-killey machine.

This is all fine and dandy, but im stuck in a RL friend 10man only raiding guild.
Now i have the gun from KT 10man.. but.. this means i now have to make the decision.
Stick to absolute crap item scaling, there for stay at 4k dps forever, or leave all my Rl friends and go join a 25man raiding guild that will probably turn out to be a bunch of L33T you have to raid 900000 times a day idiots.
A buff is a buff ill admit that, but.. seems they want to devide 10man and 25man capable hunters and only treat the players who manage to raid 900 times a week.

I’ve noticed some hunters still use ammo bags and I’m wondering what the point of it is now other then to carry eleventy billion ammo? wouldn’t it make more sense to just carry stacks in your bags since the speed bonus is built in?
Small DPS upgrade. In reality, it’s only a 1-1.5% DPS increase. Don’t get too excited over this. All this “buff” did was beat around the big problem, which is our scaling.
I don’t really use all my bag slots anyway, so I just never got rid of my quiver, AFKR. Besides, I like keeping eleventy billion bullets and not having to think about ammo for weeks.
i still use a ammo bag, i found when i dont ammo ends up just about everywhere
Plus i tend to over do it with crafting ammo so walking around with a good 28ks worth of ammo means i erm… yeah never run out lol
Oh great my gun is a nesingwary 4000 which is 200 level no bonus for me
but it cost me 850g to get one too. I need to start raiding !!!!!!
ive done KT countless times and never so much as seen this thing dropped. finally, in a pug last night, i saw it drop and i rolled 100 :O. it was a nice upgrade over avalanche, around 29 dps.
