Blue says:

If you really know your class, and I mean really know it, and if you have good gear, the right buffs, and a group that backs you up, then you are fully capable of topping the damage meters on certain fights. Overall we do want to make sure the pure dps classes are slightly higher when all things are equal, otherwise there is no point to those entire classes existing. Do warriors beat mages on some fights? Absolutely. What’s the issue?

So this reinforces some stuff that we’ve talked about in the past, and that I think comes more into focus with dual speccing. It was one thing to be gumpy that a pally could tank and heal and dps — but really, he could only do one of those and for the most part had to commit to doing just one of those. Well now your healer pally can push a button and also dps. And if he could out-dps you, that would be just a little f’d up.

Blizz isn’t shouting out any numbers (though they did say that back in BC they tried to keep hybrids about 40% below pure dps (except their beloved warriors, who they considered a pure dps class for the sake of balancing -wtf?) – and 40% is just waaay too low), but I think we can assume that the 5% rule of thumb previously mentioned is probably it.

Basically here’s the deal: if you and the hybrid are equally geared, and you both really know how to play your class well, then generally you’ll do a bit more dps than the hybrid. Maybe 5% or so. However, some fights might favor his class, or punish yours, and occasionally he’ll beat you on a boss fight or two. Doesn’t mean he does more dps than you, just that he does more in that particular circumstance. But overall you should be on top.

Of course the rough thing about having hybrids balanced so closely behind us is that it can get really hard to tell the difference between having lower dps, just being unlucky with RNG, or being less skilled. I mean if you complain that the warrior out-dpses you consistently, an easy answer for Blizz is that he may just be a better player than you.

Okay, a warrior is a bad example. History has proven that Blizz loves warriors more than any other class. So much so that most Blizz developers sleep with pics of warriors under their mattresses, next to the hand lotion. So out of deference to their preference, let’s just look at druids/shammys/pallys when we qq.

Heh, funny that you think they love warriors…Okay maybe they do, but I think they are still trying to keep us in line with everyone else. After 3.1 warriors have fallen behind other classes, so /shrug. They’re going to make changes, we’ll see how it looks after that.

  2. Kalagdor says:

Hmmm thats interestin cause even tho i top dps charts (with ur help ofc) I always find that some sort of hybrid isnt far behind

Also were do u get this information from?

  3. Frostheim says:

All the blue posts come from a Blizz developer posting on the WoW forums. Just about all blue posts are pretty efficiently collected daily at: http://www.mmo-champion.com

Blues do not favor the warriors. I would know, I used to play one until last month. My main is now a SV hunter. Personally, Blizzard’s favorite son in this expansion is the DK class. And yes, pure DPS classes should out DPS hybrids by 5 to 10% (DK’s are NOT pure DPS class).

  5. Fradin says:

I am finding most of the warriors in my guild are finding it hard to make good DPS after the last patch i am general 300-400 DPS more than any of them if fact thanks to this site im the top in DPS in my guild :) . I find DK get spoilt more too they seem to be a tough class to beat especially in P vs P but thats a completely different story . Got my 1st invite to naxxamaras this weekend and cant wait the only thing is it’s 2pm server time thats 2am here in Australia but what the hell i can’t wait to get in there and check it out.

It’s so hard to actually know what classes are “doing well” because any of our experiences amount to only a drop in a substantially larger bucket that is WoW. As Frost said, it’s nearly impossible to when it’s gear, skill, or Blizzard nerfs a lot of times.

That said, I personally check Warcrafter.net (which forms a gear score based on data from the Armory) any time someone out-dps’s me in a PUG raid. Time consuming, but fun. To date, only people with better gear have out-dps’d me, provided it’s a “fair” test (i.e. I don’t have other duties in the fight or it’s a running fight or somesuch). So the good news seems to be if you play your Hunter well, the potential to top dmg. meters is always there, though supposed scaling issues with endgame content currently may make that progressively harder.

But yeah, Blue better nerf DK’s to the Stone Age. Button mashing sons ‘a bitches have had their moment for long enough.

  7. daragh says:

Well it’s obvious that the hybrids are getting out better than us pure DPS class cause they are worth more in certain guilds that have a shortage of tanks and healers…

It’s crazy to think that you can have a druid tank and then have that same druid heal… Or a DK that tanks and then swaps to DPS or a Pala, anyways you get my point. Whats irritating is that a hunter can go from doing a lil DPS to doing a lil bit more to doing a bit more… yeeeee!!!!!!!!! good one…

I got a retri pala in the guild that beats me on the DPS chart in certain fights and we are constantly neck to neck in the race… lets not even talk about the rogue class that has it rougher than us…

  8. zyperdog says:

in pve they need to do some simple things…

    1. NERF DK <— get them down from the top of dmg meter. (its not pure dps)
    2. buff hunters, mage, warlock (pure dps) “rouges have been buffed, and are doing HIGH dmg if you know how to play the char.

    so simple.

with the 3.1 they nerfed furry warriors and that where good, they know lays on a good amount of dps. when they also can tank…

thats just my point of view

  9. Sthellesta says:

    5% above hybrids? What? http://www.wowmeteronline.com/rank/classrank/7

I think hunters are needing some buffs…

  10. Templeton says:

Well, finaly hunters are getting some buffs:
Hunter’s Mark: The ranged attack power bonus from this ability has been increased from 300 to 500.
Master Marksman: This talent now also decreases the cost of Aimed Shot and Chimera Shot by 5/10/15/20/25%.

This isn’t coming out until 3.1.3 and i have no idea when that is, but nice to see an all around buff to hunters with the hunters mark, it doesn’t fix the broken bm, but still solid.
They also may have fixed the mana issues of MM, and with BiS item possibly making MM the next best raid spec (not by much though) there may be more of a mix between hunter specs in raid . Can’t wait to see your MM build frost, may want to keep these changes in mind, too incase it is now worth it to take Imp Hunters mark, and maybe the glyph.

Also they nerfed DK tanks so maybe they are trying to slowly bring DK’s down to everyone else

  11. Gim says:

they nerfing DK tanks? uncool for us levellers trying desperately to find a tank and having to resign to a nasty dk… it was their only redeeming quality imho
