That’s right, today is Patch day! Set up your dual-specs! Explore Ulduar! See if MM really did come out on top! It’s all happening tonight!
Full patch notes can be viewed Here.
Here is the Hunter section of the Patch notes:
Hunter
- Ammunition: All types of gun and bow ammunition now stack to 1000. All quivers and ammo pouches no longer provide haste. 15% ranged haste is now built into the hunter’s Auto Shot.
- Aspect of the Pack is now raid wide, and radius increased from 30 yards to 40 yards.
- Call Stabled Pet: This new ability lets the hunter remotely access the stable. 30-minute cooldown.
- Cunning, Ferocity and Tenacity pets now all have +5% damage, +5% armor and +5% health bonuses. This should make more pet families feel viable, while additional talents have been added to distinguish a pet’s abilities based on its specializations.
- Disengage: Cooldown increased by 5 seconds.
- Frost Trap: If the target who triggers Frost Trap is immune to its effect, the Frost Trap area effect will no longer be triggered. Now reduces speed by 50% (previously 60%).
- Pets now inherit more spell hit from the hunter. Pets with magic attacks should not require a player to stack additional hit compared to pets with physical attacks.
- Viper Sting redesigned: Stings the target, draining 4% of mana over 8 seconds (up to a maximum of 8% of the caster’s maximum mana), and energizing the hunter equal to 300% of the amount drained. Only one Sting per hunter can be active on any one target.
Beast Mastery
- Animal Handler: No longer reduces the cooldown of Master’s Call, but instead increases the duration of the Master’s Call effect by 3/6 seconds.
- Improved Aspect of the Hawk now has a new spell effect.
- Marksmanship
- Chimera Shot: Mana cost reduced from 16% to 12%.
- Concussive Barrage redesigned: 2-point talent. Now causes your Multi-Shot and Chimera Shot to have a 50/100% chance to daze the target for 4 seconds.
- Efficiency: Increased to 3/6/9/12/15% up from 2/4/6/8/10%.
- Piercing Shots redesigned: Your critical Aimed, Steady and Chimera Shots cause the target to bleed for 10/20/30% of the damage dealt over 8 seconds. The damage done by this talent no longer receives modifications from effects that increase or decrease damage done by a percentage.
- Ranged Weapon Specialization: Points reduced from 5 to 3, 1/3/5%.
- Rapid Recuperation redesigned: You gain 2/4% of your mana every 3 seconds while under the effect of Rapid Fire, and you gain 1/2% of your mana every 2 seconds for 6 seconds when you gain Rapid Killing.
- Silencing Shot: No longer on the global cooldown.
- Wild Quiver: Chance increased to 4/8/12%, up from 4/7/10%. Damage increased from 50% of an Auto Shot to 80%.
Survival
- Entrapment redesigned: When your Frost Trap, Immolation Trap, Explosive Trap and Snake Trap are triggered, you entrap all afflicted targets, preventing them from moving for 2/3/4 seconds.
- Explosive Shot: Base damage lowered by 10%. Attack power scaling reduced by 12.5%. The periodic damage from this ability no longer triggers Judgement of Wisdom and Judgement of Light.
- Hunting Party: This talent has been reduced to 3 points, and now increases your total agility by an additional 1/2/3%.
- Lock and Load redesigned: You now have a 33/66/100% chance when you trap a target with Freezing Trap, Freezing Arrow or Frost Trap and a 2/4/6% chance when you deal periodic damage with your Immolation Trap or Black Arrow to cause your next 2 Arcane Shot or Explosive Shot spells to trigger no cooldown, cost no mana and consume no ammo. This now has a new spell effect and sound.
- New Talent: Black Arrow: Fires a Black Arrow at the target, increasing all damage done by you to the target by 6% and doing periodic shadow damage for 15 seconds. 30-second cooldown. Shares a cooldown with all other traps.
- T.N.T.: Increases damage done by Explosive Shot, Immolation Trap, and Explosive Trap by 2/4/6%.
- Trap Mastery: This talent has been moved up to tier-2, up from tier-9, and is now a 3-point talent.
- Trap Mastery, Resourcefulness and T.N.T. now all affect Black Arrow.
- Improved Wing Clip: This talent has been removed.
- Wyvern Sting: Duration increased from 12 seconds to 30 seconds. PvP duration reduced from 10 seconds to 6 seconds.
Pets
- Bullheaded now adds 20% damage reduction for 12 seconds along with its current CC-removal effect.
- Cornered: The critical strike reduction when this ability is active has been increased.
- Feeding Frenzy increased to 8/16% damage up from 6/12%.
- Furious Howl (wolf special ability) now stacks with Battle Shout and Blessing of Might, however, it only affects the wolf and hunter. Its effect and cooldown have been doubled so that it provides the same benefit but isn’t up 100% of the time.
- Gorillas now have a new family ability, Pummel, which works like the warrior ability and has a single rank.
- Grace of the Mantis and Roar of Sacrifice are now also available to Cunning pets.
- Great Resistance increased to 5/10/15% magic damage reduction, up from 3/6/9%.
- Roar of Recovery cooldown decreased to 3 minutes, down from 6 minutes.
- New Talent: Shark Attack: This new 2-rank talent is available to Ferocity pets. It increases pet damage.
- New Talent: Silverback: This new 2-rank talent is available to Tenacity pets. It heals the pet when Growl is used.
- Roar of Sacrifice can be used on the hunter only.
- Stampede (rhino) only affects 1 target, but adds a 25% bleed damage debuff (that does not stack with Mangle etc.) in addition to its knockback.
- Thunderstomp is no longer a gorilla-specific family ability and is now available to all Tenacity pets. It has been reduced to one rank.
- Turtles and Crabs now dwell in waters of and off Eversong and the Ghostlands, giving Blood Elf hunters access to local Tenacity pets.
- New Talent: Wild Hunt: This new 2-rank talent is available to all 3 pet trees. Increases the contribution your pets get from your stamina by 20/40% and attack power by 10/20%.
so many questions! my guild wants to run right into ulduar tonight and im thinking whoa, i got hours of testing to do lol
i know its been reported that mm and sv are close now, with mm possibly edging out ahead.
im curious if, overall, do we go up or down in dps. if i was doing 2600 on a dummy yesterday, will i be doing that much today? that is, if we can find a dummy free. oy.
im actually curious to see if resourcefulness boosts dps much. more up time, means more time for lnl to proc. cheaper means can be cast more in the long run.
Well…I am breathless with anticipation! I finally feel comfortable enough to try MM now that I can keep my BM spec…any recommended builds for MM with the new patch?
Long-time WHU reader, first time poster. Awesome, awesome site. Anyway:
The only SV nerf seems to be Explosive Shot dmg. and it proccing less, and also the Sniper Training nerf for mobile bosses (which Hunters are already horrible at). The only question will be if the buffs to Trap Mastery (Black Arrow), Hunting Party, and the Black Arrow bonus itself compensate for this. Testing will be fun, but I’m guessing SV will remain roughly the same, and still more mana-efficient for long fights. With luck, this represents MM coming up to SV, not SV going down to meet the others.
I also assume that I get to find out if my own musings about an ideal MM build match with the WHU’s, since we currently only have BM and SV.
Long Time reader first time poster I was also wondering if you guys have a recommended MM build I am currently a SV. Just wanted to say that this site is great and has a wealth of info!
awww jelous of u alll here in england we have to wait 4 tomorrow
intrested to test mm and see what others find the whole idea sound crazzy due to blizz kicking it down 4 sooo long
Don’t worry Eddras. The delays have been purple (epic) all day. It looks like we’re waiting until tomorrow as well.
I’m also staying SV for a while, simply in anticipation of the mass exodus to MM. Trends are for sheep, and I’ll stick with what I know until the new numbers are in, either from my own tests, watching the meter in raids, or Frost’s number-crunching.
Question for you Frost,
Have you been testing out the pets new trees on the PTR? Any ideas how it will change and what to spec your pets for (in reguards to surv dps)? I know they are changing things up, I dont want to leave Rupert out of all the new changes
Hey, I have to laugh about the mass exodus to MM that’s coming… I was one of the black sheep who was specced MM coming into WotLK, stayed MM during the SV craze and now I’m STILL MM… I was MM before MM was cool, lol.
But seriously, I am psyched to see MM becoming more mana efficient and a boost in damage. In response to Arthemystia, I have to say as a MM hunter, I have never had a problem on mobile bosses. Sure you take a little damage nerf, but overall MM is about the instant shots, and with new glyphs to reduce the CD on 2 heavy hitters in the MM arsenal (Chimera and Aimed shots), I only see good things to come!
instant shots are boss. nothing like getting the killing blow on heigan during the dance
I love being MM! I was helping some guidies on H Nexus yesterday and managed to get 3 kill shots off for over 10k each, lol (1st KS, Readiness, 2nd KS, “Okay guys, I’m gonna sit here until my KS CD’s… hope ya’ll kill her before that”… 3rd KS) It was a fun run overall, lol.
I have to laugh as well.. short time reader and first time poster here. I am fairly new to wow and being 80 (about month and half into) and i am still learning.
My guild also wants to run straight in to ulduar as well (looks like it might have to wait till tomorrow as well) but im feeling a bit apprehensive as i just respec’d about 2 weeks ago to SV from BM and i am still trying to get used to the rotation. I am excited now for dual spec even tho as a hunter its not as critical as say a warrior. Will any of you do dual spec anyways? I am thinking im going to anyways and go BM and SV, i brought my hunter up as BM and i really miss it. I only respec’d for the raids so i could have higher numbers and try to feel like i could keep up with the big boys. Its all exciting tho and cant wait to see how this all pans out
So when we can login Frostheim are you going to confirm the MM spec is the new DPS leader.? If so can you please link your spec build? Also does this the change the enchants and gems we should be using for MM Spec? I went off your enchants and gems and AP was big for SV is that the same for MM ?
Right now it’s not looking good for me getting online tonight
I will certainly try to figure out the optimal spec asap (I think it will be MM). This will change your gem choices: for SV you wanted 16agil; for MM you will want 32 AP.
Ashamel, MM is certainly better for mobile bosses. So yes, if MM is indeed tops now, it will help for such fights. With more instants and less time for Steady Shot spamming, that is certainly one of its strengths. Having never run MM for longer than it took to get annoyed by the dps drop, this may be my first real experience with it.
The front runner for the top DPS spec from people over at Elitist Jerks, who have been trying out the new talents on the PTR and the hunter spreadsheet, appears to be a 1/15/55 spec. http://www.wowhead.com/?talent#coZ0eVooZx0ci0cIhedAhsk
Server shut down 17 min ago… Lets hope that this patch will bring something new to the table. Hope I can move back to MM specc since I like that specc the most.
Nedd to get the guild up so we can tear trough Ulduar with arrows, swords and shoes. Seems like its gonna be a really hard and different instance.
Happy hunting

My brief (very brief) tests are in rough agreement with Yarsh’s link, though there are obviously small discrepancies. It could be because I want SV to stay on top, however, so I will wait. I might try to post some more thorough results in a few days, with links to the specs I used. I also realized today, embarrassingly for the first time, that one more point one would get us both Explosive Shot and Readiness. /cry
Well, I will just let Frostheim figure out what is the best spec for dps mean time i will sepc back to BM and go get me the new spirit beast. So frost hurry up already =)
Been looking trogh some numbers for some hours now. Can’t get online, so i’m preparing =)
Have been reading some simulationcraft reports and it shows that survival is still on top.
Here you can se the complete list of dps.. (druids, warlock and rogues above us)
http://code.google.com/p/simulationcraft/wiki/SampleOutputPTR
So the best spec is 1/15/55
Here are some info on the 1/15/55
http://code.google.com/p/simulationcraft/source/browse/trunk/Hunter_T8_01_15_55.simcraft
And the link to the build: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent#coZ0eVooZx0ci0cIhedAhsk
The best glypths is: Steady, Serpent and explosive shot.
And the best pet is now wolf.
Rotation seem to be: Rapid Fire, Black Arrow, Kill Shot, Explosive Shot, Serpent Sting, Aimed Shot, Steady Shot.
Remeber this is just number, I have not been testing this myself. Just wanted to share it with you =)
And btw.. I think http://www.wowhead.com/?petcalc#0Md00ccz0hooo is the best spec for the wolf.
http://code.google.com/p/simulationcraft/source/browse/trunk/Hunter_T8_Wolf.simcraft As you can see here, the talents who adds dps is listed here. I added Dash, Charge(to get to target faster) and Avoidance(to get rabid)
yeap so i did lots of tests so far and MM is way ahead for me —–
Then i go to my trainor and realize im a total NUB and forgot that with a new talent came 37 more ranks lol – so black arrow was a joke while i was testing, still, there was a huge dps difference and MM was nice to go back to, im leaning towards marks just becuase i feel like a damn lock with surv now, guess its not that bad, but its more of a finger workout than mm is
O and HURRY UP and get to your testing
maybe its the way i play and how i have my addons set up, but i dont find SV more complicated to play. sure its got a new CD from before, but MM has just as many. i have to reconfigure mstb to alert me when serpent sting is ALMOST UP (for chimera) instead of when it is gone. heres hoping it can!
im wrackin my brain choosing glyphs. i got them narrowed down but my server is young and i saw new glyphs for over 200g on the AH and by the time i was ready to reglyph, my guild was in ulduar lol
plus im thinking (or maybe hopin) the wolf will become a major player with furious howl changes. wont be able to find out until i find a free dummy /sigh
Pls moderate my comments here. they wont show up, think its becasuse it have some links in them.
I personaly spec’ed back to SV and noticed about 32.2 more DPS then before. I have been using a wolf (plague hound) for while now, due to what I have seen from Petopia. It does seem that the plus to pet damage has in fact fixed some of the aggro issue’s I have been having, due to high damage, Etc. It’s looking good. But I always wait on the final word here. Sadly, I cant join others in hope for a top MM spec, I’m not all that fond of it. But I go where the damage takes me.
Survival is King. All other specs bow down.
btw 1st week of 3.1 is over and we are 8/14 in 25 man Ulduar.
Can’t wait for week 2. =)
