I’ve written before about my belief that the key to topping dps meters in raids is All the Little Things that you do, from never losing a second of dpsing, to having flasks, food, and all the rest. We also refer to this here at the WHU as paying your dues.
While raiding this weekend, I realized that there is also an opposite to this. The simple basic things that if you aren’t doing, you simply don’t deserver to be on the raid. You are not ready. These things are just common courtesy. I’m not talking about that gray middle ground of not bringing food or flasks, but the things that are just plain disrespectful.
You Shouldn’t Be at the Raid if You:
- Show up with a pet lower than level 80
- Show up with a tenacity pet
- Have gear with empty gem sockets
- Don’t have enough ammo for the raid
- Ask anyone at the raid for money to pay your repair bills
- Ask for flasks, food, enchants, etc during the raid (unless your guild policy is to provide these at the raid, of course)
This isn’t a random list. With the exception of not having ammo, everything on this list is something that people did at actual raids I’ve been on in the last couple weeks. Seriously. Even the going around and asking for repair money.
And before you say it, ungemmed is not an option unless you just got that piece of equipment in the raid. It literally takes less than five minutes to go to Ironforge, buy a gem, and port back to Dalaran. If you’re broke, buy a cheap green-quality gem for a few gold. Don’t have a few gold? Then you’re too broke to raid (see: repair bills). Don’t have five minutes? Well if you can’t show up 5 minutes early to take care of it, I question your commitment to the raid.
I’m prone to a bit of friendly exaggerating and hyperbole here on the WHU, but I am not exaggerating this time. I truly feel personally insulted when this shit happens. It is disrespectful. It is saying:
“Hey, I don’t actually care enough about the raid to put in even five minutes of thought or prep. I have no intention of actually contributing, I expect the rest of you to carry me through it. You can be sure I haven’t put any work into this. Oh, but I plan on trying for every bit of loot I can get. Kthksbai.”
These people are lucky that I wasn’t the raidleader. I would have kicked them from the raid on the spot. I’d be totally willing to raid short a person or three – because it’s never just one thing. Those people aren’t going to be a significant contributor to the raid, and if they’re doing shit this stupid and disrespectful, you’d better believe there’s more coming. I’m a big fan of designing policies so that they encourage good behavior. Sometimes that means tough love. Other times it means being mean, and that’s why we have Hrist.
Oh, and one final note: this isn’t on the list because it’s just too ludicrous, but it also happened: someone put in for, and won, a piece of T7.5 loot that he was already wearing.
Anyone else have horror stories to add?
One of my guild buddies has one pet (a bear), which he claims to have “an emotional attachment to”. His gear is fine and he isnt BM (MM if i remember correctly) is this a time for tough love ?
Maybe Arust should answer this one…
I was on a pug for sunwell on my garbage server so I should have known better; but all the same I guess I felt that if a person was able to hit lvl 70 or better they should have SOME sense… must be the night elf in me or just my unholy desire for the Kil’jaeden bow drop(want it so bad…).
After waiting 45 minutes in the entrance area of the raid for this flock of morons to get their act together and watching the group wipe 2 time because some curious moron aggro’ed one patrolling Sunblade Protector. When we were finally ready we all wiped on the same %^#^$# mob and I was like “wtf”.
Then a cursory look at recount showed my lvl 76 BM hunter at the top of the DPS chart which is fine if our group wasn’t mostly 80′s (including a huntard who didn’t pay his dues, I think I saw him melee’ing most of the time).
At that point I might have yelled some “choice” words and hearth’ed back to Northrend to get something actually accomplished. Choice words…
this is more common with pugs i suppose, but i DESPISE yellin for summons. yes i know there are times when its required (such as a last minute addition to the raid) but if the raid has been schedule for a week, dont go out to the middle of burning steppes without a hearth 20 minutes before start time.
i carry a high personal standard, and im not a leader, so i dont really complain about or impose my standard on others. and i know we all have off nights, we all make mistakes, all that can be accounted for. but wow is serious business. seriously
if you dont bring your A game, youre wasting peoples time.
but ive learned the hard way youre gonna hurt feelings if you expect even the slightest bit of excellence or integrity. ive come across this with folk in discussions about hunters rolling on weapons (im thankful my guild leaders are understanding and considerate and mature, a rare trait to find) so i assume when you start talking about raid ettiquette and paying your dues, peoples feelings get hurt and here comes the drama.
The only acceptable allowance for improper pets is Gnolldeath. Anyone else who brings a bear to a dinosaur fight should be awarded the ==[Fail]== belt.
I have def been there when i rolled for t7.5 and the person who rolled against me had them in her bag not actually on and so she didn’t think she had them. so pissed… but i got them last week so thats just the past now….
Frostheim what pet do you currently use
We have 3 steady raiding hunters and 6 hunters total. One SV, one BM and me (MM). The BM is consistently in the teens when it comes to the dps charts and is better geared than either me or the SV hunter. We consistently beat him on the charts (always top 10, usually top 5 thanks to you and Arust). He insists on rolling for the T7.5′s over his T7′s even though the two of us have 200′s in those spots. I actually respecced BM today so I can show him how poorly he performs, and when I beat his numbers once again, I will definitely be bringing it up to guild leadership.
I brought a 79 Spirit Beast into Naxx which I had an attachment to since I had spent so much time getting and leveling the damn thing. I whispered the GL if it was OK, and he responded, “you’re the Hunter”. Also I was sick of all the complaining about the noise/size of my devilsaur. BTW, my spirit beast is now 80 and dps is still vastly inferior to the devilsaur, which really sucks. Might just have to tolerate more complaining about “Thumper”.
I’ve also had my stupid N4000 break in a raid. I had recently installed a new mod which posts gear condition, but I didn’t realize it was an AVERAGE of all gear. I figured I was fine going into the raid @92%, but of course only my gun really gets any wear so it was likely @35% by that time. And I’m obsessed with repair at any opportunity, and have wads of cash. It was just trusting a new mod which I didn’t totally understand. I ended up doing melee DPS on the 4 Horsemen for 8 minutes. Didn’t do too bad, either. We brought ‘em down, anyway.
Everyone makes a boneheaded mistake every now and then. As long as they’re not all “LOL” about it, people should get second chances to do better. No thirds, tho.
Frost uses a white tiger named Scratchfury, though I suspect his full title is supposed to be Scratchfury, Destroyer of Worlds.
Of course, if that was his full name, he should be orange, and not white.
I use a cat. Specifically, the super cool white lion. So far they seem to be on par with the raptor. I will be a sad dwarf if the raptor comes out on top after 3.1 though, ‘cuz they’re ugly.
BM should use the Devilsaur. ‘Cause it’s better, and will eat anyone who complains about it. At least that’s what mine did.
(/high five for a fellow white lion afficionado!)
Luckily, I’ve never been in a raid with someone who couldn’t pay their repair bill. Seriously, this happens? Crikeys, go run some dailys for a few days and you’ll be rolling on all that fake money!
Prolly my most irritating raid instance recently was on 25-person OS, when the lustworthy “Fury of the Five Flights” trinket dropped. My guild has a pretty free rolling system in place, which usually is totally fine….except I lost the roll to a guildmate who was there just messing around on his DK alt. His *FOURTH* LEVEL 80 ALT. Who he plays maybe ONCE A WEEK!
I’m still smarting from that one.
/agree Frost. Even after covering that gent’s repair bills and TELLING HIM SO, he still asked for more money during the raid.
I’m personally quite happy, that, although I’m mostly retired, the hunter force is still strong in the Axebrew family.
It brought a tear to my eye, it did, when you guys were doing this weekend’s (successful) Kel attempt and Heedlife shouted from across the room, “Hey dad, I’m right behind Frost on the meters!”
Should I no longer trust recount? I know you’d never slack.
Oh, man…did you ever hit a sore spot with me. I have such a player in our guild, who most unfortunately is a fellow Hunter. Never brings food, never has a flask or even an Elixir (“but I bring my own Runic Healing pots!”). He also advertised his desire to get a turtle for raids, at which point I told him that I would refuse to join any party with him in it.
To make it worse, his wife plays a lock with exactly the same attitude. And of course, they are both out-dpsed by players who aren’t even 80 yet…no surprise there since they have unenchanted equipment. /sigh….
And when I confront them about the lack of enchants, they claim it is too expensive. But they sure manage to have all the vanity pets and loser achievements. As you say…it is never one thing.
I smell a /gkick coming…maybe two.
Ghost kitty >>>> white lion
Once in naxx we started to pull the 4 horsemen, when I realized my ranged weapon was broken, Fortunately I had 10 repair bots, so I quickly put one down and repaired before he made it to his corner.
Other than that I can’t think of anything, the hunters in my guild are really good, and I have a challenge beating them, were pretty close to each other in DPS.
Here’s one: how about tipping the guy that drops the feast or places the repair bot? Its always nice to drop a couple of coins in their coffer after having them go out and get the mats needed for their contribution.
Golgat – Maelstrom
ok i get pet attachment i us my pet Baal a lynx the first pet i ever caught but that doesnt stop me from getting a better 1 when its called 4 like when ravagers were all the rage in tbc if i was bm poor baal would go to the stables and if some other dps pet became better i would damn well catch that and bring the old kitty out 4 party functions as 4 the actual post all i can say is amen….just amen
Now, I can see bringing a pet that’s 79. Once, right after you hit 80, and you’re doing a farming type raid that same day. But I’ll see your 79 and raise (?) you a 71 (“he’s my raiding pet.”)
Ah, but it’s not just huntards (and yes, they qualify as huntards).
-Shaman who don’t drop totems (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE, YOU BLUE-SKINNED CAN-CHEWIN’ SQUIDGOAT).
-Classes who can heal but don’t. Ever. Even when told to by the raid leader.
-Folks who die to the same thing. Every time. For 3 months.
-Pulling agro before the tank does.
-Tanks who position dragons (and other large beasties) so that breath, cleave, etc, hits everybody… and then reposition the beastie again so it does it AGAIN after the rest of the raid has put themselves in the right spot.
-Folks who do any of these and then tell other classes how to play.
I’m sure I’ll have more, but the trick is narrowing down the list. I hate everybody.
Garethgobble reporting from Azjol-Nerub
Axebrew I also hate everybody.
I have often told ppl (in a kind manner) that getting buff food and flasks for raid is really important. They then yell at me telling they can out dps me anytime and any day of the wow hour. I lock up and abandon all hope of ever speaking to them again. It annoys me that people dont see that if all buy flasks, buff food and enchant + gem before raids all will go so much slicker. I especially hate stupid people who think they know sooooo much more than anyone else.
Gar out
tipping feast and bot givers is a good idea imo. or at least help with occasional mats.
and raptors aint all ugly. get one of the zul drak raptors the trolls ride in front of drak. it has 2 color palettes it switches between when summoned, keeps everyone on their toes, is it black, or purple, black or purple
yes me and the ROFLraptor have much history together.
Frost is a racist and only uses white pets. Are there even any white raptors in the game? I honestly don’t pay that much attention.
Note: The proceeding comment was made for comedic purposes only…for all you people who cannot detect sarcasm over the internet.
Lol, I had a DK ask me if I had forgot to train FD, after we downed Archavon on heroic. Mind, I never pulled aggro or had a reason to FD, but they were annoyed I was at the top of the aggro chart. I kindly explained to him that I was ignoring my pull warnings and attempting to burn Arch down before he enraged as he and I were propping up the raids dps (he and I were around 3500 and the rest were around 2500)
I was rather annoyed about being told how to play by a glorified Alt. Mind your own biz, Alts.
Yay for devilsaur love in the comments!
I never LOL’d so much in my life. Oh fuck off people, go out and have a life, this is just a game. I’m horrified by the things you write. Seriously =)
just a note…sarth +3D…bring a tenacity pet,a crab to be exact so u can sacrifice and ease the jobs of other classes…also…i totally undertstand ur pissed…but it really depends on ur guild progression…i was allow to bring my lvl 75 crab to naxx due to the fact that we were clearing everything as usually that week(not doing immortal to be exact) we still manage to get patchwerk within 3 mins…so it really depends on the situation…i think what ur saying is really about certain players that just wanna do nothing and get free epics
another note…i do have to agree with shoo…it’s a game…the dramas in the game don’t mean anything…just have fun…i mean my real life friends play wow too, so i asked them to help me with my red proto drake(only had less rabi left)…they told me to fuck off because they think achievements r retarded and getting the red proto drake means nothing…did i get mad at them???no…everyone is different…so take it easy
