BRK Saves the Day

So while you could argue that every blog is different in its own unique way, there’s one thing that every popular blog has to deal with, and that’s comment spam. It is satan’s tool of death and destruction right here on this very planet. It’s worse than even dirty Hordies. Seriously, it’s that bad.

Our comment spam has been getting out of control. Most likely (hopefully) you’ve never seen it, since I go on the backend at delete hundreds of spam comments several times a day. It’s like playing whack-a-mole. Of course in a perfect world, the various spam filters and spam plugins would stop them from getting on there in the first place – even on the moderated list. But they don’t.

Finally I asked BRK, the granddaddy of hunter bloggers at www.BigRedKitty.net for help, and he responded immediately with a solution. I am therefore making BRK an honorary member of the WHU. Clearly this is a hunter who pays his dues (not that there was any doubt of that).

Since installing wp-spamfree I have had no spam comments to delete. Sure, occasionally it eats a legitimate comment, but I think that’s a valid price to pay (hint: as long as you have cookies and java enabled, it shouldn’t eat your comments. Mostly).

Today when I looked at the admin dashboard I saw the most beautiful thing ever:

spamblock
So a big thanks to BRK for paying his dues and saving the day.

    Very nice.

Now, set down the pint an’ go moderate my 2 comments in Myr’s guest post, ye grand bastard.

Sorry, my missus reminded me to mind my manners. So, “Would ye please set down the pint an’ go moderate my 2 comments in Myr’s guest post, ye grand bastard?”

    This is not a spam.

I find Akismet works great; did you have that plug-in? My record in any one day is 113 spams caught. After that, it seemed to drop quite a bit. I am not sure if that is because the bot that is doing the posting gets notified that it is being caught, or maybe it checks later on to see if the “comments” got posted.
