A Good Week for the Ego

Posted: by Frostheim

There are good weeks for the ego, and there are bad weeks. Somtimes you’re in a raid all night and don’t realize you had your pvp gear on until afterward. Or you pull aggro, or spend half a boss fight in Aspect of the Viper – or all the other little ways a hunter can fail. Then there are the good weeks.

WHU reader Drool recently commented to a post saying:

A buddy gave me your website to look at and I am very impressed! At 1st I thought some of your damage meters and such were BS but then I stared to use some of the tips and tricks from ur blogs. Very awesome!

As a dps class, about the biggest compliment you can get is to show your damage meter, and have someone think that you’re lying :)

This actually reminds me of a comment a healer made in our 10-man group after we hit the berserk timer on Maly and wiped.

I didn’t realize healers even paid any attention to dpsers, other than to keep us standing (and thank you for that. Seriously. We love you.)

Then it all got polished off by success on Patchwerk trying out some new stuff with some new gear yielding my best dps yet (though most of my closest competitors on the dps charts were not at the raid, but still, this was total awesomesauce).

So all in all, a good week for Frosteim’s ego.

having just broke the 3k dps mark (still outfitted with some pre-Naxx gear), I can attest that this entire site has helped in every aspect of play for me. I am absolutely and utterly thankful for every bit of information that you pass along on this site. WTG guys. Keep up the excellent work!

P.S. Has your non-WoW roommate started her character yet :) ?

So, as a SV hunter, I’m pretty much all 25 man gear equipped and just cannot seem to pull the most DPS I think I could. If you don’t mind, can you share with us your basic rotation where you pulled off 5.5k DPS? Most I’ve ever been able to do on patch is a 25 man is 4.7k. /shrug

ive got my rotation down, hit capped with only 1 talent in MM talent (forget its name), gemmed, enchanted, using best bullets from bullet maker, using battle and guardian elixirs, pet buff food, and haste buff food for me, and even with my CD (rapid fire and loatheb’s shadow), im lucky to break 2k on maly pt1. i get 3-3.5k consistently in other raids, im pretty much in 10 man naxx gear, some lvl 213.

i suppose the fact when he casts vortex, im usually in melee range so i melee the entire vortex. stupid ginormous hit box.

still working toward the goal. need moar haste.

Sandwich: first of all 4.7k on patchwerk is nothing to sniff at. That’s good dps. You can certainly up your dps by tweaking your talents. You only need 2/3 in Expose Weakness and 2/5 in Hunting party to have them up all the time. Take 3 ranks in Noxious Stings — that gives you +3% to your dps right there.

Quivering: I hear ya man, but p1 Maly is a poor measuring stick. I’ll often do around 2.7k on p1, but be at 7.7k by the end of the Maly fight from the awesomeness that is p3. 3-3.5k in 10-mans is very respectable.

See what happens when you kill Maly without me!?!?! You have to relearn the encounter! :P Unless you guys brought sub par DPS, then it’s their fault. Since I wasn’t there I clearly have no idea.

    Hi Frostheim
    One question:
I have black Ice Polearm and i have also Journey’s End Staff.
Wich one would you prefer ?
Black ice gives you more agi and Journey’s End gives you more attack power

  7. Deepfriedegg says:

to cpdragon: if you are hit capped, use Journey´s end. If not, use Black Ice. (sorry but i still think that someone that has both of these two best hunter statsticks should know which one should he be wearing :)

  8. Sandwich says:

Thanks for the feedback Frostheim. I’ll change up my spec as you mentioned and see what happens

I know your readers have been demanding a lot from you, but, I was hoping you might compile a list of good consumables that help bump dps during raids. food buffs, battle/guardian elixirs etc, anything that you can think of that might be considered useful or a necessity.

sorry if I’m missing some older post that might have contained this, but I looked and did not find.

    Great blog, fun and useful!

    hi frost,

being a sv hunter, there are alot more things to look out for other than being a BM hunter before woltk release.
usually my eyes are on these few key factors
    1) EP CDs
    2) Serpent stings DOT timer on target
    3) Mana reduction during fight
    4) LNL proc from stings or trap

how do you maintain checks on all these? I have a poweraura addon which monitor the serpent sting and LNL procs. Addtional addon to monitor my mana during fights. In the midst of all these action, I am just spamming the Steady/Autoshot macro. But somehow, at the end of the 25men raid, my dps just will not break the 4K mark, when other dps-ers are churning 4K+dps. I know there’s something which I have done wrong. But i do not know what’s wrong.

I have seen other hunters critting at almost 75% of their EP, whereas mine is critting at only 50% of the time even tho I am making use of the extra 10yards bonus etc. Why is that so even if my crit rating is higher than his?

Love to hear on your advice to improve myself and clear my doubts.
