This guide is for optimizing the Marksman MM Hunter Shot Rotation in WotLK.
Marksman hunters have a varied and flexible shot rotation, and while not as difficult as it was in BC, MM hunters have a lot of choices in their shot rotation. The basic idea is a priority-based shot cycle. Because so many shots in the MM hunter rotation have cooldowns, you want to use the most damaging shots whenever you can, and move on to the 2nd most damaging shot, 3rd, etc. Steady Shot is your last resort when everything else is on cooldown.
Marksman MM Hunter Shot Rotation:
Hunter’s Mark
Serpent StingChimera Shot
Aimed Shot
Arcane Shot
Steady Shot
Silencing Shot (whenever available)Use Kill Shot as top priority if it is available.
Repeat steady shot until Arcane is back off cooldown, then use it, Chimera, and whatever else is available in the priority order. The MM hunter shot rotation is basically playing wack-a-mole with your available buttons. For the most part you’re smacking whatever one is available.
Arcane Shot note: If you have a good ranged weapon (ilvl 264) and around 450 armor pen, you’ll want to drop arcane shot from your rotation. This will make your standard rotation: Chimera, Aimed, Steadyx4. Still use your arcane when you need an instant shot on the move.
Be sure that you don’t miss Chimera Shot. Not only is it the MM hunter’s single most damaging shot, but you’ll then have to waste a Global Cooldown (GCD) reapplying Serpent Sting. (Also, don’t use Chimera before you put up Serpent Sting — serpent is a nice part of your Chimera shot damage!) And an important note: Chimera does it’s full damage regardless of how long serpent sting is up — the serpent sting portion of Chimera Shot’s damage is based on the full potential of serpent sting, not how much is left or how much has already been done.
Note that you do want to use Silencing Shot whenever you can. Sure, it doesn’t do much damage, but it’s also not on the global cooldown — so you can macro it in with your other shots.
As a MM Hunter you always want your hunter’s mark up because it increases your crit bonus damage as well as your base damage. Start your shot rotation with it, and put it back up every five minutes, even though you’ll have to interrupt your rotation to do so.
Macros: Don’t Do It
It is possible to create a one button MM hunter shot cycle macro using castsequence; however, you will lower your dps as a result. Any time you’re building a shot rotation macro to lower you dps… it’s a bad idea. Just pay attention to your MM shot rotation instead.
You should, however, macro your Kill Command and Silencing Shot onto your shots, as we explain in the Essential Hunter Macros guide.

Do you think that mm is better than surv? (Frostheim don’t kill me ^^)
Admin
If by better you mean “more fun”, then for me the answer is yes.
If by better you mean “doesn’t make me a sell out to any of my past beliefs”, then the answer is yes.
But, if you mean, “Does it do more DPS (until Blizz’s whim changes)”, then no, MM is not better (atm…)
Since this post is about MM – Is Trueshot Aura dispellable in some way?
In our last few downs of Obsidian Sanctum w/ 2-3 drakes up, I was putting out the dps, when suddenly my mod shows Trueshot Aura removed… I was like WTF – and sure enough it wasn’t on my buff bar.
I switched bars and started spamming TA, until I was doing nothing but spamming TA and watching my buff bar waiting for it to kick in. In my frustrating I failed to watch for Void Zones — and of course I died.
I could find nothing in the combat log about it. Then it happend again and I ignored it despite the dps loss – but it was definately frustrating to lose 420 ap pts for me and the dps raid wide.
Help?
The only way MM is better is the Trueshot Aura – if you are in a melee /hunter heavy raid and the only MM — you could potentially be giving the raid more dps than you could as a survivalist. But it depends heavily on the spec of the melee and their gear.
In 25 man heroics you could be giving anywhere from 150-300 dps preraid buffs.
And if you have feral druids that could be closer to 300-500 dps
But if you are looking to be the one topping the charts, a survivalist will quickly strip you of that ability. By averaging double your dps.
I totally agree with you about using macros for shot cycles. Even with BM, where the shot rotation is as simple as it gets, it makes no sense to create a macro using cast sequence. For instance, if you miss on Serpent Sting, you will want to try to reapply it as soon as possible. But creating a macro for each of your big shots is a great idea. That way you’ll never miss a potential chance for Kill Shot or Kill Command. I did this for my Steady Shot but not yet for my Arcane.I will definitely be doing this as soon as I log in. Thanks for the great idea!
Just wanted to ask some questions. I have always been playing MM, but after the buff of sv I chose to try it. Skilled back after two weeks. Missed MM to much:
Why is arcane shot included in the rotation?
Could you maybe make a MM raid spec guide, would you change anything about my mm spec?

A got this shot rotation from scattered shots and I find it tops w/ DPS and a bonus of being easy on mana.

Note depending on your speed you may need less SS between cooldowns.
IMO Aimed to too mana expensive for it’s output. I know you may be saying Chimera before Serpent? Well worth the additional DPS my friend.
Admin
JohnHenry. Couple things about your cycle.
First of all, Chimera will refresh your serpent sting for you. So you fire serpent sting once at the beginning of the fight. Thereafter you will never need to hit it again — chimera takes care of that.
Aimed (or multi) is indeed a costly shot; however, it’s also a *lot* of damage. MM hunters have two different talents dedicated to making this shot your hard hitter. With a ret pally in your group you should be good on mana, or maybe need to use a mana potion. But the dps boost is well worth the cost.
Also note that MM will be getting some better mana efficiency in patch 3.1. Hopefully more than is on the PTR now though.
Frostheim, by firing chimera first you get in more chimeras overall thus boosting your dps. Look at your own recount breakdown serpent sting is responsible for very little of your overall dps, while chimera accounts for most. Serpent sting can wait until later in the rotation.
Again this is the rotation recommended by Scattered Shots and I have not put them to the test at the firing dummy, but I used to use a rotation similar to yours and this has boosted my DPS dramatically, at least from an anecdotic perspective.
Many MM hunters on the WoW forums are advocating not acquiring Aimed shot at all because of the mana drain w/ minimal if any DPS bonus. Time to drink a potion or going into viper will drop your DPS. I still get the talent to have another instant cast for kiting but that is it.
Test it. I would love to know your results.
Admin
We have done a bunch of tests with various MM shot cycles and various talent builds. I can see that multi/aimed wouldn’t be worth the drain if you didn’t have the talents, but they account for a *lot* of dps with the talents.
With Serpent Sting, here’s the thing: casting it first delays your Chimera by 1.5 seconds, sure. Now, Chimera’s does 125% weapon damage, PLUS 40% of what the serpent sting total damage would be (if serpent sting is up). Chimera without a serpent on there is doing WAY less damage. Never do that!
Serpent Sting is what makes Chimera shot do so much damage. Otherwise it’s just 25% better than an autoshot, but with a 10 sec cooldown.
Edit…your Recount chart shows Explosive as your big DPS generator not Chimera, but the concept still applies. In my rotation I am getting off two Chimeras by the time you get off one.
Admin
I’m SV specced, only because it is the highest dps spec. However I regularly run other specs (particularly on the PTR, looking to see how things are changin).
Putting Chimera before serpent is like getting an extra auto-shot. Blah. Chimera is only a high damage shot if you already have serpent sting on.
Also, you get off one Chimera by the time I get off one, using Arust’s shot cycle above
I could agree that chimera should be the second shot, but serpent *has* to be first.
Oh so now your advocating a different rotation
Hi there. I wanted to ask a question mainly because the maths behind it are too complicated for me to be bothered with. If the changes on the PTR stay the same when 3.1 is released, would it be best to not bother with arcance shot at all?
My reasoning behind this is in two parts. Firstly, arcane cannot trigger the bleed effect granted by the new Penetrating Shot talent. Following on from that, improved steady shot can boost the damage from chimaera and aimed shots further. Since the 15% damage bonus from arcane can’t grant the extra 30% on crit from the penetrating bleed effect, arcane has a far, far lower damage potential than aimed now. And since the damage is so much lower, isn’t that kind of a waste of the potential damage that improved steady shot can grant? If you skip putting points in arcane shot in your build you should be able to get at least 3 points in barrage, making aimed shot pretty damned deadly, once you combine it with a bonus 15% (from imp SS) and a 30% bleed effect.
Any thoughts?
Frostheim and Johnhenry, as a MM you want to cast Chimera at the beginning of a boss fight ONLY if you have MD up, so cast rotation would be:
Hunter’s Mark (pre-pull)
MD (pre-pull)
Chimeara Shot (opening)
Aimed Shot (MD)
Arcane Shot (MD)
Serpent Sting
Steady Shot
Steady Shot
Arcane/Aimed
Arcane/Aimed
Chimaera
The reason for my suggestion of this shot rotation is that it gets three instant cast, high end damage abilities onto the target to get threat on the tank. Of course this also means you must be moving while you have MD up, otherwise your MDs are wasted on Autoshots. After MD is over, park yourself at a safe distance from the boss and pump out our hits. Plus shooting out a Chimeara at the beginning means that when your serpent sting is about at half to three-quarters of the way through, your Chimeara shot will be available to fire. If it were not for this reason and the additional threat to MD, you are correct Frostheim, you would want to put out serpent sting first, but the additional threat to a tank is quite nice and is well worth sacrificing approximately 200 damage (since the 40% is 40% of damage already done by serpent sting, not how much it is able to do).
No offense, but when I read the post defending the use of Aimed shot, and saying the damage was well worth the mana, i thought “someone must be used to the mana efficiency of SV”…. sure enough i was correct lol. Multi-shot is worth it in certain situations. Aimed shot never is. I even tried it with talents, glyphs etc. (over 55%crit on it) and it still wasn’t worth the mana drain it does to MM hunters.
Admin
First, I’ve been trying the ‘no aimed or multishot’ build the last two weeks and I’m underimpressed. As in not impressed. I used to be only a couple hundred DPS behind Frost. Now I am like 500 or more DPS behind. I still go out of mana either way, and still end up in Viper, and thats popping a Pot, with a Ret Pally and a SV hunter (Frost) in my group. Mana regen on MM is a Joke and Blizz has said as much. If I’m gonna go OOM, I might as well do as much damage as I can, and everything I’ve done and see says Steady Shot is not the shot for MM for that.
I have less specials. Those specials fire off on basically a 1.5 second CD (the GCD), where as Steady Shot is 1.6 to 1.7 with my haste. Those 0.2 are like adding in all my latency again and slowing down all my shots. I can only say that seems like it adds up to a ton of damage on a long boss fight. Longer casting shots that hit for the same or less, is less overall DPS.
I also take Aimed over Steady because being 500 behind Frost is not as good as being only a couple hundred behind when I used it. Thats my emperical evidence. I’ve also done repeated dummy tests, and it neither spikes as high when I use my Mirror, or is as steady without the mirror. Marks is about Burst DPS. Aimed shot is about Burst, as is Chimera and Arcane.
Say what you want about Marks, but I’m at the top of the chart in those first few seconds. But once I’m out of instants, and have to fall back on my Steady Shot, my DPS just goes down down down. If I had another instant, or something with a 1.5s CD, and I could use those exclusively, life would totally own.
Last, the MD thing. I haven’t had a tank in a long time that actually needed MD on the pull. Most tanks have superior threat in those first few seconds, or at least our tanks (who I consider awesome like Hrist or Soul). They only sorta need MD on long rotations, but most DPS classes should manage their agro with dumps. MD only buys a little margin on long fights. So I consider, as you did, that I put up HM before the pull. On the pull, I let the tank grab them and I serpent sting. Then I MD, and use the 3 main shots, Aimed, Arcane, Chimera while I’m running and the tank gets max thread in 4.5 seconds (or as close to that as my lag allows).
Admin
Or I MD before the pull and lead with Multi if there is a big pack of mobs. That rarely gets me killed, but hey, if this were easy, a Lock could do it
“It is possible to create a one button MM hunter shot cycle macro using castsequence; however, you will lower your dps as a result.”
Could you please briefly explain how a macro that you’re spamming say, 5 times a second to *overcome* lag can reduce dps, esp. dps lost due to lag? My understanding of /castsequence Shot A, Shot B, Shot C, Kill Command, Shot D (or w/e) is that rapidly spamming the macro results in the next-available shot *always* being fired, while shots/abilities that are on cd (meaning, they are not available to use atm) are simply skipped and the macro tries to do the next item, until it finds one that can be used. In this way, even if your little shot icons are lagging behind the actual game and showing the shots still on cd when, in fact, the game “thinks” that they are available (but you don’t know it yet due to lag) the macro overcomes the lag by *always* sending *all shots* to the game server if you are spamming it fast enough- meaning that the server will always and constantly fire whatever shot it can fire.
Of course, I realize that this depends on setting up the macro consistent with your personal fastest (“best”) shot rotation, driven by your weapon speed, haste rating, etc. So some of us may need 3 Steadies before Arcane, Aimed or Chimera are available again, or Arcane may be consistently faster than Aimed (w/e) and others of us may need only two Steadies to fill in the wait-time.
Thanks
Admin
There are a couple of reasons why /castsequence is the devil and will hurt your dps. Part of it is that in a priority-based shot system with flexible cooldowns (due to not just your haste rating, but haste procs) there isn’t one set sequence.
More importantly however, is that /castsequence only works in ideal situations where you just stand in place and hit your macro. This works on the target dummy and Patchwerk, but the vast majority of boss fights require you to move around – during that time you usually aren’t shooting (unless you have instants available) and when you are ready to start up again you don’t want to just go to where you left on in your sequence.
The reset command doesn’t alieviate this, because even two seconds spent running can radically alter your optimal shot cycle.
This isn’t even taking into account that sometimes you might want to hold off on a shot for a couple seconds because you know you’ll want it soon (keeping an instant in your pocket when you know you’ll need to run in the near future, for example).
Thanks for your fast response, and I understand exactly what you are saying.
BTW, why can’t I find a “max-dps MM build” example anywhere on this site? I found BM and Surv (gag) but no build info for MM.
Thanks again, just found this site and 3 pages are now bookmarked.
Noc
When will you guys get a MM Build up?
they said the MM build is on the agenda so hopefully soon.
im trying MM, i like MM despite the oom issue (been trying to weave viper sting in when possible). I specced for replinishment and rapid killing but since rapid killing doesnt proc on bosses or adds in ulduar, it feels like id get better use with a couple more points in effeciency. plus the fact auto shot is my highest damaging shot in MM freaks me out a bit.
Hi excellent guide on the MM shot rotation. I’ll be sending my guildies here for sure.
One thing I noticed on hunter’s mark is you did not update it to reflect that it now last 5 min. instead of two.
Other than that great work as always.
“Start your shot rotation with it, and put it back up every two minutes”
Admin
Thanks for the note on the two minutes. Changed it to 5 minutes.
so iv been 80 for a while and the top hunters in my guild say survival is the way to go. and i see it is but atm i switched to MM and my DPS went up? i switched back to survival just to check and it was true! i went up about 600-800dps with what i am. If i could get the shot rotation and the specc you use as a sruvival hunter that would be great right now my specc is http://www.wowarmory.com/character-talents.xml?r=Draka&cn=Bashel&gn=Angels+of+Mortality
i listen to the hunters in my guild but i want to see my name in the #1 DPS slot not the rogue in my guild that hogs the glory that rightfully belongs to the hunter =P. so please help thank you
p.s i know i need a new helm and ring and such i was working on that but account shut out for a little while =/
found the shot rotation and specc. my bad didnt look hard enough
hey arust is it better for MM hunters to stack crit cuz we dont have master tactiion or whatever its called that SV hunters have?
Admin
Stacking anything once you’re past the Hit Cap is purely based on the EAP you find works for you.
I generally agree with Myrl’s post on the subject, as he’s the smartest hunter I know (and an elf).
I tend to favor Agil, but I don’t overlook anything with more EAP. So if something has 40 agility and something else has 82 AP, and with nothing else on the item of value, I’d take the 40 agil. But if the AP thing had 83 AP, I’d take that.
alright thanks =D
Arust i have another question. I found the best glyphs for SV but i haven’t found a guide for the best for MM or are those just the best glyphs over all? because i know there is a glyph for trueshot aura that adds crit on chance or something. I am just wondering about it because i want to MAX out my DPs for MM because I am the MM hunter for my guild and still want to see my name near the top =D
my opening rotation for any fight is always:
hunters mark
serpent sting
chimera shot
arcane shot
SS till chimera is up
chimera
rinse repeat
with the bonus of imp SS for the extra 15% dmg and 20% less mana, it just makes sense to use that chance on chimera. Being that as MM you most likely have the 3/3 improved stings+the glyph for 6 extra seconds(that are supposed to add the extra dmg to chimeras 40% hit) and the new tier bonuses they released, my chimeras crit for about 11k and hit for regular 8-9k with the imp SS up. I also have the 2/2 in survival instincts, so on top of the pretty huge boost to serpent sting and thus, chimera, i almost always have the piercing shots ability up since i am only using chimera, arcane shot, and steady. (i kicked aimed out of the picture for the pure fact of i can get more out of crits from steady with the same amount of mana and have all the extra bonuses and procs come from SS, esp with the SS glyph.)
Pretty much my entire rotation and spec procs off of eachother, chimera feeding off of Serpent and SS, which are both fed from glyphs/talents, which both proc the bleed effect, which is enhanced in dmg from the 8 seconds after the initical critical hit (im at over 50% crit with kings/gotw/feral aura). I dont rely on the sake of instants, but building up the power and dmg capabilities of those instants so that when they do go off of CD, they hit like a truck.
All of this is based off of a 165 with 3/3 focus aim hit cap and 2.2 base attack speed. Also have the 5/5 imp hawk, which i use to just shove move SSes in when i can inbetween the arcane and the chimera.
Also to note, the serpent sting itself,(even with glyphs and talents) may not do a huge amount of your recounted dmg, but remember it supplements the chimera, which is the biggest shot you have as MM.
honestly, my only problem with dps in raids, is that i more often then not, forget to turn off “track fish” after doing the daily just before raid time…..being specced into the extra dmg i lose out on that out of pure ADD stupidity. WTB autotrack back so i can focus my attention on more important things, like which pet to have out for the raid.
“It is possible to create a one button MM hunter shot cycle macro using castsequence; however, you will lower your dps as a result.”
You may want to check out the /castrandom statement:
/castrandom Arcane Shot, Aimed Shot, Multishot, Kill Command, Chimera Shot
/castsequence !Autoshot, Steady Shot
This is an oversimplified version of the macro I use, but mashing it (via strong fingers, assigning to the scrollwheel, or hardware key pulsing) will burn the long cooldown shots as soon as they come up. If the randomly chosen shot isn’t available, it proceeds with the castsequence normally without affecting the GCD. The error messages can be hidden with the /script statements that toggle the error frames.
I’ve found that the dps from playing whack-a-mole with a half-dozen keys is far, far exceeded by the macro and very fast keypresses, even with the possible delay inserted by a series of bad random choices. It also allows you to free up a lot of your attention to watch your Rapid Fire, Misdirect, traps, and incoming environmental/AoE damage..
Hi All,
First time on the site and it is AWESOME, glad a guilde told me about it.
Anyway I have a quick question, it may have been answered already but I didn’t see it. I see some posts saying in the shot rotation you should do Chimera shot right after Serpent Sting but they way I read Chimera it does 40% of the damage done by your Serpent Sting so I always use my Chimera shot just before my Serpent Sting is about to complete.
So I’m wondering is the wording of Chimera shot a bit “off” or is it me?
thanks
Fire Chim shot as soon as its off global cooldown. It does the same damage if fired at the start or end of sting. It takes the total dmg the sting will do. If you fire chim shot as soon as its up every time you will see a big increase in your dps. Also if you have a wolf blow both +AP buffs then sting, sence the sting scales with AP.
Hope that helps
Slivlayer – Troll MM Hunter from day 1
oh see i didnt know that about chim shot. before i respecced to sv a few patches ago i was using chim at the end of the sting.
Does this mean the serp sting glyph would increase the damage that Chim shot would do?
Dues Payer
i was gonna ask some questions but ill wait till you can put up the MM glyph guide. im sure itll answer my serpent sting/chimera questions.
I was wondering if you could make a macro that either casts Arcane Shot or Aimed shot, depending on whats ready first.
Would a simple macro like this work? Since if the first parameter isnt possible it would jump to the next?
/cast Arcane Shot
/cast Aimed Shot
Uhm just noticed that this question has pretty much already been answered. Gonna try /castrandom. Thanks.
guy idk why u leaving aim shot after chimera and arcane u first shots should be serpent , aimed then chimera {or arcane w/e u want } to get the bust of the 5 damage from aimed in chimera damage too
Why multishot with 3/3 barrage and 3/3 imp barage isnt better than aimed shot?
I think that +12% dmg and +12% crit chance is better than aimed.
Sry for my bad english.
Admin
Cubancrazy: Chimera does more damage than aimed, which is why it’s first on the priority list. Note that aimed shot does *not* increase the damage of any other shot.
Rava: those talents also increase the damage of aimed shot. The +dmg and +crit chance apply to aimed as well as multi-shot, and aimed shot is an instant, and it’s less mana.
If you mean talent Improved Steady shot so he has only 5-15% chance to increase dmg, but barrage and improved barrage have increased dmg and crit change everytime.
And multishot is also instant.
Admin
Multi-shot is not an instant – it just has a short cast time. This means that you cannot shoot it on the run, or jump-shot with it.
I was kind of curious about glyphs. I currently use serpent sting – increase duration, steady shot – increase damage with sting, and kill shot – reduced cooldown. My question is with the recent changes to hunter mark would it not be more beneficial to a MM speced hunter to take the hunter mark glyph for additional 20% more damage and then fill out the other 2? BTW Arust and Frost keep up the good work.
please disregard previous post, i fail at reading thru the site my question was covered previously. My apologies.
Cubancrazy: Chimera does more damage than aimed, which is why it’s first on the priority list. Note that aimed shot does *not* increase the damage of any other shot
then why the aimed shot say that increase the range damage by 456 to 457 , that damage dont sum to the chimera shot????
In my experience MM is much Better then SV in SV the guy still has a lot of his health when he charges toward you but in MM one melee hit is all it takes
What i’m going to try for the next few weeks is a MM build without arcane shot. (i actually put 1 point into Imp Hunters Mark ZOMG) With the 4 piece 8.5 bonus(chance on steady shot to increase attack power by 600) and the improved steady shot, (15% chance to increase damage/reduce mana of aimed/chimera shot) there is plenty of reason to spam that button! Arcane shot does more damage than shot does, but it may not be worth it due to the buffs steady shot gives you. Besides, arcane shot does not proc piercing shots, so thats even more against it.
Lets just pretend that you’re in a boss fight and all the debuffs are up, along with serpent sting. The rotation would just be chimera shot, (silence shot through GCD whenever up) aimed, steady steady steady…. repeat…as long as serpent is up. Forget the start of the pull for argument sake.
I disagree. I am solely a MM Hunter. And Aimed Shot before Serpent and Chimera is the way to go. You get a much bigger hit/crit from Serpent/Chimera if Aimed is already up. So your DPS takes a few extra seconds to get to the top of the chart. Who cares?
Admin
Jennifer: I think you have a common misunderstanding about how aimed shot works. Aimed shot does not affect the damage of any other shot – you can read our explanation here: http://www.warcrafthuntersunion.com/2009/04/aimed-shot-explained/
With the Account Bound bow, I usually open up with a Concussive Shot, Steady Shot, Arcane Shot, Aimed Shot, Chimera Shot(or maybe a Steady Shot), then Concussive and again.
On boss fights, or mobs that are immune to daze…I tend to use Serpent Sting, Arcane Shot, Aimed Shot, Steady Shot, then right before Serpent Sting wears off, I toss a Chimera Shot…because Chim Shot says “Instanly deals 40% of the damage done by your Serpent Sting.” Now does this mean 40% of the damage that has already been dealt, or 40% of the damage Serpent Sting is ‘supposed’ to do?
Mobs with tons of hitpoints that I can get dazed…it goes Concussive Shot, Steady Shot, Serpent Sting, Arcane Shot, Aimed Shot, Chimera Shot, and Concussive Shot, Steady..blah blah.
Now..if the tank pulls more than 2 mobs. In the past, I’ve layed down Explosive Trap, Serpent Sting everyone, and throw Volley after Volley. Its mana heavy…but the DPS stacks high.
Granted Im only level 61 and playing around in Ramparts. Toss me some tips on how to improve dps. Im fully into MM spec atm, and I have the wolf out of ramps tamed. How do I maximize my dps?
Admin
For your level, if you really want to maximize your group dps (rather than just focus on leveling) I recommend SV and the SV rotation. Concussive shot is not part of your rotation.
can some1 post a good MM build ive seen mixed ones not sure which one to choose
Contributor
The main guides page has everything you need for maximizing your dps, including spec. Enjoy!
idk who said MM isnt better but it definetly can be, once u get more ulduar gear with ArPen then MM is much better
@Fritrish
I’m not sure what your opening statement is in regard too. Do you mean for normal mobs, say as in grinding etc for a quest? If you do, then you’re wasting time with concussive shot and your shot priority is incorrect. MM damage is rather high at the minute due to improved Ulduar weapons. You aren’t using that but you could still kill mobs within 3-4 shots. Long before they reach melee range.
I suggest you open up like a raid boss with Serp Sting then immediately move onto Chim shot. If you crit on both it will take a good 1/2 of any mobs health. Follow it with aimed and arcane. If its still alive at this point use concussive and then disengage. Repeat until dead. Chances are it won’t have much HP left after that and shouldn’t be in melee.
On a boss fight, your priority is incorrect as well. Serp deals damage based on the total amount of damage it would have done over the period. so 40% of either 15s or 21s if you’re glyphed. Behind autoshot this should be your biggest damage ability. Use it EVERYTIME it’s off cooldown. It’s your #1 shot unless Killshot is available. In which case you should be using
1) Serp Sting
2) Chim Shot
3) Aimed Shot
4) Arcane Shot
5) Steady Shot if nothing else is off cooldown.
If 2 things are about to come off cooldown, use the higher priority one in the list.
Also make sure you check Frost’s macro’s to macro a silencing shot with every shot. Chim, Aimed, Arcane and steady. It should be used every chance you can, due to the fact it has no GCD so it’s basically a free shot, just like autoshot. It won’t interfere with your rotation.
Edit:
Forgot to mention. Killshot when it’s available becomes your priority shot and takes over for Chim. So it would be:
(assuming serp is already on target)
Killshot
Chim Shot
Aimed
Arcane
Steady.
Make sure you glyph for increased Serp duration, reduced CD on Killshot and reduced cooldown on Chim shot.
im a Surv hunter with mainly 25 naxx gear and a few 10 man naxx gear with 3/5 val and 1 piece of conq… do you think marks is better for me? if so, when should i change specs?
Contributor
Depends on the theorycrafting source, Garg. You’re on the cusp of what most places consider to be the switching point. So the truth is that right now, probably either spec is viable.
Morale of the story: get your butt into Ulduar/VoA, get a t8 set bonus, and make the problem easier for yourself.
haha thanks im working on that… im sopposed to be in ulduar as i speak but the authentication problem is killing me…lol
I don’t know if anyone has mentioned it but the few dps specs (elitist jerks builds) for MM atm seems to be just dropping arcane shot, i had 3 points in there for moar arc damage and used your rotation. About 2.6-2.8 on the dummies.
By Moving an extra point to Rapid recuperation, go for the throat and silencing shot i’m minimum 2.8 on the dummies even after a sloppy run, most ending at 3.2k ( and 100k extra overall damage) just by moving a few points around and swapping arcane for a steady. I thought this would be because its a lolnukescenario. I went to grobbulus 25 where i’m practically always on the move and pulled around 3.9k. i know right now you guys are thinking lol i do moar. But i have a naxx 10 bow <3. Just some honest research to consider.
My conclusion is silencing shot and go for the throat = 400 dps? no wai. Must be the rotation change.
Also i never go oom in 25 mans. 10 mans i tend to just ninja innervates if we are running a low dps group.
hey i found that mm is good but my fav is still surv
A good shot to macro Silencing in with is Chimera Shot.
Silencing has a 20 second cooldown, Chimera has a 10 and that should be getting popped off every time it’s up.
I’ve recently began doing a lot of BGs with my MM hunter. I have found it very useful to add Silencing Shot, Rapid Fire, and Kill Command into my Serpent, Chimera, Aimed, and Arcane shots. It pretty much guarantees that I will always use them when they are available. I use the rotation that is recommended above with just the macros added to them.
Here’s the macro I use for Chimera, all the others are the same just replace shot name
#showtooltip Chimera Shot
/cast Silencing Shot
/cast Rapid Fire
/cast Chimera Shot
/petattack
/cast Kill Command
It really pisses casters off when they see my mark pop up and as they are turning to wail on me they get hit with a 3 sec silence and a sting:) and while they are waiting to cast I hit them with Chimera and Aimed. The Silence may be wasted mana on a tank or rogue, but I try to go after the ranged dps and healers in BGs and let the tanks beat it out.
Hope this helps. Enjoy!!:)

Silencing Shot and Kill Command should usually be macro’d to a few shots anyway, but it’s decent advice Dive. I’m surprised you PvP as MM though. BM and particularly SV have more abilities that are geared toward PvP. Or you might just be trying to use your raid spec, and don’t have a specific PvP spec, in which case this advice is fine.
Contributor
I also like to target casters, mainly because melee classes scare me more in PvP, though the strategic edge Dive mentioned is another good reason.
I got a good question.. it´s like this, I shot a Chimera and crit 10k and get the bleed effect from MM spec, and then fire a Aimed shot and crit 6k, and to the question.. Does the Aimed shot bleed effect replace my Chimeras even if the Aimed shot crit is lower ? because if it does, it´s not better to have Aimed before Chimera in the rotation to get higher tick on the bleed effect will there is cd on Aimed and Chimera?, ( sorry about the Bleed effect =P, forgot the name of the talant spell, )
Contributor
I think you mean Piercing Shots. The fact that you cited 4K as the difference between Aimed and Chimera crits (not sure whether that’s average or just 1 example) should be as much data as you need to answer your question. Even if the bleed affects don’t stack (I don’t actually actually know if they do), which would mean the affect will be more powerful for the Chimera, the fact that Chimera is doing SO much more damage than the Aimed Shot means that you’ll always want to prioritize it higher, even if the Chimera bleed would be slightly more. A slightly better better DOT isn’t going to be worth losing 3-4 Chimera’s in a boss fight because you’re putting it after Aimed.
The fact that Steady Shot, the least powerful of the 3 that is affected by Piercing Shots, usually gets cast more than either of those, further complicates the matter. There’s no effective way to manage that in a rotation to both hit the right shots *and* maximize bleed damage.
It’s still a good question about whether or not the bleed affects overlap. I may try to find out, or if someone else knows, please share. But unless I’m missing something big, it shouldn’t affect your rotation.

Hello, just want to say this sight is beyond the best i have found, i am a level 50 MM hunter, i have only been playing the game a short time and am trying to be more affective, what would be a proper shot rotation for a hunter of my level? also, there are other shots aka concussive shot , why are these shots excluded from a shot rotation? and at which point do they become a viable shot to take, thank you all in advance for any and all help!!!!!!

…so my Arcane Shot is doing more damage than my Aimed. WHU-recommended MM spec, glyphs, pet, etc. etc. The only thing difference between me and most MM hunters is that I stack AP instead of agility (for using some raid gear as tank gear).
Now, this isn’t a post-patch Armor Pen. nerf thing. I noticed it before the patch, and every time since. It’s a confirmed trend for me at this point, not an anomaly. And the difference over an entire raid has been as much as 400 per shot in favor of Arcane (though that was today, post-patch). I haven’t run with any other MM hunters yet to compare their numbers.
Am I affecting my shot values with AP stacking? Did Aimed get nerfed below Arcane in the patch because of ArP? Or am I just a weird exception?
….
Devillok: at your level, go Beastmaster spec. Far easier for soloing and leveling. Your goal should be to get to 80, and don’t worry a ton about your rotation until that point, except to learn the mechanics of the class. This rotation is for raid dps. Concussive is for PvP and possible soloing.
Contributor
Ah crap, and now I remember the 10% bleed affect for Aimed, which probably puts it back over Arcane Shot overall. If I’m missing something, cool, but I may have just answered my own question.
*hangs head in shame*

Ech, but Piercing Shots is only for crits! And if we’re being cautious (maybe 40-45% crit for Aimed, which tends to be a bit lower than some of my other shots in raids), we’re looking at adding maybe 4-5% of my total Aimed damage onto base Aimed dmg. THEN compare it to Arcane.
With some of my recent discrepancies however, which have been substantial, the totals will still end up being close. Just not the Arcane landslide I originally thought it was.
tell me what you think
of my spec : simskat-spinebreaker
Hi guys my name is Rick or Galvatorex as I am known in game, I have only been playing just over two months and my hunter is an 80 speced for BM. Currently I am hitting about 1.5 – 2k Dps with a shot rotation that i came up with thats easy to learn and does ok. I want to push my DPS up for raids and so forth so I can start getting better gear. What spec do you recomend for max DPS and where can I find an example of the talent build? Also with that spec what would be a good shot rotation? Thanks a heap in advanced! And GREAT site.
Learning is a daily routine unless you are dead.

Rick, the main page has everything you need to maximize your dps:

And my brief Arcane v. Aimed crisis (detailed above) was resolved when I realized that Aimed criticals do 30% bleed damage. Assuming about 50% crit in raids, that’s 15% base damage as bleed damage. I do still get higher base values for Arcane than Aimed most of the time (it’s usually quite close), but not 15% higher.
Damn it epic post failure
A question on MM shot rotation used in Shandara’s spreadsheet.
If you plug in SS-Chim-Aimed-Arcane-SteadS and ignore Silence Rapidfire and readyness you are given one set of gear choices. If you start including them in various places in your shot rotation you are presented with a second set of grear choices. Mostly stays the same except some gear that is quite close.
What do you belive the best and most accurate representation is for shot rotations in Shandara’s spreadsheet?
I have a few questions regarding Chimera Shot. Does it do more damage at the end of the duration of Serpent Sting? My recount shows the damage bonus from serpent sting as a really wide range of numbers i.e. 1000-4000. Could this possibly mean that it would be more beneficial to use Chimera Shot towards the middle of the rotation?
so ya this rortation is way better then what is posted here
use your hunters mark as always then pop kill command
but this is the rotation here
steady shot
serpent sting
steady shot
arcane shot
steady shot
aimed shot
steady shot
chimera shot
and then continue that rotation, pop huntes mark if needed, but it shouldnt be and also remember to pop kill command when its cool down is up. this rotion is perfect, all your shot cool downs will be ready when u stay with this rotation
Angrod – Im no expert but follow this forum closely as I am trying to learn too. But I think what the “experts” are trying to say is – “Here is a list of your most effective shots – and Shot A may be dependent of Sting B or event C for max effect”
So as I understand it, you need to get your Chimera off as soon as possible as its your “big daddy number 1 shot priority” with big DPS as well as to maximise the DPS efffect of the Serpent Sting. So Chimera has to follow Sepent for max effect.
As to where you want to use rapid fire (another big DPS) and how you want to weave in the rest? Its up to you. But read between the lines and you will find theres a good reason why Arust and the WHU team have selected the order they have. Just to throw the cat amongst the pidgeons – from theory craft spreadsheeting for best possible DPS, this is the actual “supposed best rotation”:
Rapid Fire > Readiness > Serpent Sting > Chimera Shot > Kill Shot > Arcane Shot > Aimed Shot > Steady Shot
Make of that what you will!
But it seems to me as if chimera shot does more damage towards the end of serpent sting.
i use the exact same rotation and find myself higher then the survival hunters nowdays, i can reccomend for raiding. rapid fire and any other haste cooldowns (i am troll i have bezerking) first be used for mana regen (viper and steady shot spam) “note: dont forget chimera while getting mana back because losing that sting damage could be costly” and then readiness and rapid fire again to boost your dps back up.
Also, chimera shot is uneffected by the time of serpent sting, it would be displayed if it did.
Both my wife and I have level or hunters together form 1-80 side by side in the Icecrown realm. She is a Beast Master and I’m a Crit Marks Man. I say “Crit” MM cause I’ve always focused my talents and gear for crit %. Over all I’d just like to say “ITS FUN!”, watching my hunter spit out huge crit shots one after another is awesome. I believe its almost the only way someone should play MM, although very difficult its very rewarding. I often play my wife’s BM and in honest comparison I’m more powerful then her. She is does however live a lot longer than me. I’d also just like to say that “Aimed Shot” is my best friend and TOTALLY worth the mana if you gear and spec in crit. That shot is by far my most powerful. Over all I’ve never played with a survival hunter, I ponder if they really could do more damage then a “Crit” MM. The way i see it, even if SV does more DPS then MM, I’ll still have more fun with a crit MM and that’s the whole point of the game =). I’d just like to add a simple macro that i find is also very fun and I hope people find it useful.
/cast disengage
/cast frost trap (or snake trap)
I find it a very useful macro. It will drop a trap at your feet at the same time you disengage. Also with the use of at least one point on the talent “entrapment”, makes it handy in both PvE and PvP.
I have very good success with a rotation of:
Serpent Sting
Chimera Shot
Aimed Short
Steady Shot x 4
My hunter’s Mark is macroed to my pet attack, otherwise it would be in my rotation.
I did a lot of testing on the dummies and in raids and leaving out Arcane and Multi consistently gave me improved dps. I know there are some advocates of putting Aimed before Chimera but, that’s really dependent on how far along in your gear you are. If you are in BIS gear, with a lot of Arpen, it might pay off but, not my a large amount.

I was chatting with one of the top hunters on my server today and he had some interesting advice. He doesn’t stack ArP. but still removes Arcane from his rotation. Why? Extra bleed dmg. from Steady Shot crits, 3 talent points that don’t need to go into Improved Arcane, and he loads up on Improved Steady Shot, meaning that the extra Steadys also contribute to extra Chimera and Aimed dmg. It was prefaced with the need for 350 ArP just through gear (which I have, actually), but he has no ArP trinks nor gems.
I ran some of my data from a couple raids to check this. It came out slightly in favor of Arcane, but I don’t have an accurate way to calculate whether or not redistributing those 3 extra talent points would close the gap needed to actually make Steady more useful. It would be damn close, however, at least given the raids I was working with (I will be testing more, of course).
The lone question I had that he couldn’t answer is whether Piercing Shots stacks with itself from multiple crits. If it does not, this entire theory is invalidated. To be clear, I have no qualms with the recommended rotation, but this may be worth looking into. I’ll be running tests to try to form some tentative conclusions for myself.
Here is my rotation..
Hunter Mark
Then Aimed shot because it gives ranged damage bonus of 457
Then serpent sting
Then Arcane shot because i get mana refresh glyph when serpent sting is on target
Then Chimera shot and it makes sense to have chim shot last cause u get that +457 bonus from Aimed shot.
While am doing this i am using steady shot every time so theres always a shot going on.
i have a 10% extra crit strike rating when true shot is active.
Please tell me what you think
Contributor
Aimed Shot – http://www.warcrafthuntersunion.com/2009/04/aimed-shot-explained/
…so you’re working under a flawed premise there. Not that it’s your fault; Blizzard’s tooltips for shots are notoriously confusing, none more so than Aimed Shot.
I’ve been living a lie!!
Admin
Arth – that’s interesting. It’s not the first time I’ve heard the 350 armor pen rule, but I’ve never heard any reasoning or logic behind it. As far as I can tell in this case, there is no bleed advantage to what he’s doing.
Piercing shot bleeds overwrite each other — so as long as they’re always up, there’s not a lot of advantage in overwriting them more often (especially with steady shots). In a quick couple target dummy tests my piercing shots bleed was never – ever – down, even without any raid buffs.
It does make sense that at some level of armor pen your steady shots would be doing about the same damage as your arcane (though around 350 armor pen myself, arcane shot still does a lot more damage).
So I think I’m going to consider the 350 armor pen rule still a myth unless someone else knows of the reasoning behind it.
Contributor
While 350 ArP does seem arbitrary, in my tests I found that while the bleed affect overwrites itself with each crit from the shots in question, the ticks seem to do more damage when it is from two or more of them.
I say this because, after hundreds of shots at the dummy, the Piercing Shots DoT damage was always equal to 30% (or within a few tenths of a percent) of my crit damage from the 3 shots that proc it. If one bleed affect completely overwrote another, this wouldn’t be the case. So unless I was doing the math or test wrong, Piercing Shots does stack with itself, even though the debuff on the target seems to suggest otherwise.
I’m still not sure if that would be enough to validate my friend’s theory. But it’s something.
I’m not even close to as geared as frost or arth but after looking at the spreadsheets I gave taking out arcane myself, granted I didn’t respect but I ended up spiking to 3.8k unbuffed and ended at 3.2k and with arcane shot I spiked as high as 4.2k unbuffed and ended at 3.4k. Not a lot of difference, however respecing for more improved steady shot instead of arcane shot maybe even it out a bit more. My other thought was not necessarily not ever using arcane shot, but saving it for the times in fights where I have to move, it would mean that I’m just about guaranteed to have an instant up to use while on the move, which may decrease the dps loss from moving, what do you guys think?
and just a note, I did not use rapid fire, readiness, or CotW during these tests, I did use kill command because I use it on a macro and didn’t feel like changing up my action bar for the quick test
Contributor
Schmevan, you’d have to respec to do more accurate comparisons. As it is, I’d be shocked if you had come up with different results given your spec (which includes Improved Arcane). Also remember to remove any proc’ing trinkets for such tests.
I’m going to continue to run my own. I’ve raided both ways now and haven’t seen an appreciable difference, but raids include far more variables than dummy tests do. I only tested to see if Piercing Shots stacks (it does according to my results, since it overwrites earlier ones but each tick does more dmg. when stacked), but haven’t compared the two specs fully. Based on the few comparisons I did with hypothetical dmg. if I had re-spec’d, I’m still leaning toward the WHU’s spec/rotation. But I’d like to know for sure.
Also, like you said, either way it would be advantageous to keep Arcane up on your UI for the extra instant during running fights, spec’d for it or not.
Hey guys I was wondering if anyone could look at my talent and glyphs and see where I might have made a mistake somewhere and if so how I might go about improving it to help raise my dps. I am also grateful for the awesome shot rotation ideas I will give them a try and see how they work out. Here is my hunter’s armory link I would be most grateful for any help. http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Uldaman&n=Shadowtiger
I respeced for the improved steady shot and put 1 point in improved barrage for the extra aimed shot crit. What I noticed was not an improvement to dps but an improvement to damage done. To clarify I do my dps tests by shooting my rotation until oom, viper until mana is at 90% and go to oom again. With arcane shot total damage done was 884590 with a dps of 3473. Without arcane shot total damage was 976861 with a dps of 3357.5. however all one needs an SV hunter or a ret pally for a mana battery and any of the problems that could come from extra mana useage go right out the window. (I have never oomed or had to go viper on any fights in the current content with either of those two classes in the party). I suppose the next test I will need to try is a timed test that sees how much overall damage each spec can do over the same period of time.
after a little more testing arcane shot has come out on top for me in the end, I don’t really aim for mana conservation. My armor pen is at 354 and I see significantly better numbers with arcane shot both in burst damage and in overall damage over a set period of time. Maybe in theory if my armor pen gets higher the without arcane shot build will be better but I’m not wasting any more gold on respecs to find out, at least for the time being.
Contributor
Comparing overall dps might not be the best route. Because you include a lot of other shots (i.e. variables) that we don’t care about for the purposes of Arcane v. Steady. It would probably be advantageous just to compare the shots themselves in their respective specs. And make sure you’re include bleed damage and the increase to Aimed/Chimera from Imp. Steady Shot procs in your Steady Shot totals (including the extra crit % to Aimed from Imp. Barrage), because a strictly shot-to-shot comparison will favor Arcane in a landslide. Steady will always be beneath Arcane (barring insane ArP.) but it’s the bleed dmg. and boost to other shots that bridges the gap.
My own tests favored Arcane as well, but by a slim enough margin that we could easily attribute it to the random number generator (RNG) built into the program. It will remain better for mobile fights, since we get Arcane either way but it will be stronger with the Arcane build. But the Steady build will be more mana efficient not just from Imp. Steady Shot procs but also because Steady’s base mana is less than Arcane’s.
Still, no reason to change spec/rotation from this. However, I do think that the point at which Steady passes Arcane is sooner than many realize due to these factors, since I am in no way stacking ArP. (358 with gear, no ArP trink), but my tests (3 in all to this point, including several thousand shots) have Steady Shot interestingly close to Arcane.
Contributor
To clarify, normally total dps comparisons are fine between specs. But the builds Schmevan and I are discussing are exactly the same, save a few points. Counting all else equal, I just think it makes for a more focused analysis to eliminate the ancillary material and focus only on the dps difference where it is affected by the point changes.
The main difference that I noticed between arcane and steady shots are that while arcane does more damage per shot, I can put way more steady shots in the time it takes to fire one arcane shot, especially with the haste bonus from improved aspect of the hawk meaning that while arcane is doing a good thousand to two thousand more damage per shot more damage is being done overall by stead, however the more tests I did the more the burst damage from arcane made dps a little higher. It would take quite a bit or armor pen to change that I think. While the two builds I used were close in the end, my arcane shot build spiked higher than my steady shot build. Granted I did not use the glyph of steady shot because the spreadsheet showed a signifcant decrease in dps with the steady shot build if I replaced any of the current glyphs, hawk, serpent sting, and hunter’s mark (I use hunter’s mark because since I am the MM hunter I am always the one marking the boss and if I can give the other hunters in my 25 man raid group a significant buff that will also increase my dps I’m going to do it, even if another glyph would increase my personal dps more.)
MM is really only better then survival when u have 600+arp(with grimtoll or runstone) and 1k+ without it, right now i have about 1k arp(with a food buff) and am usually in the top 1-5 on the charts averaging about 6.5k dps(single target)
also probly the best pet for a mm hunter is a wasp since it gives 5% arp to every1 in the raid
Contributor
The wasp’s ability doesn’t stack with the druid’s identical ability. So they will thus only be occasionally useful in 10-mans, and almost never in 25M’s. If you run with a steady group that doesn’t include one, they might be a safe bet. Otherwise, no.

Hello guys!! first of all thank you for this website that u guys made, it really helps a lot.
Well i have a lvl 80 MM spec hunter and i’ve been struggling on my dps. I made a macro for my burst DPS and im pulling almost 4.2k thats with self buff with Flask of endless rage, but on my median dps i always pull 3.5 to 3.8k only, it sucks when im on 25m raid coz the max dps that i can get is only 4.9k sometimes less. ive been experimenting a lot of rotation so that my dps could increase but its useless. heres the link of my toon http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Bonechewer&n=Yhannoby and also this is my recent rotation on my spec. Trinkets, rapid fire, kill command berserk (for my burst dps) HM-Serpent sting-Chimera-arcane-aim shot- steady shot- arcane-chimera-aim- silencing shot- steady shot steady shot. please help me to increase my dps and share some rotations.
Ok, I need some help. I am a Survival Hunter who’s had to play his resto shammy for our 10 man Raiding Group. We have an MM Hunter in our group, what I know from MM is what I’ve learned from reading this, for the past year or so, but have never really played the MM. The problem is this, I don’t know how the damage meter should look for MM, the MM hunter is our group is very similarly geared to my Surv Hunter, and my dps is WAY higher then his. He was under 3.5k dps in 10 man ToGC, easily the last place dps in the raid. I was healing, but I looked at the recount and saw Auto Shot has being his number one damage dealing ability at 32-35% with the next ability comin’ in at 15-19% depending on the fight. That really doesn’t sound right, imo. I was worried about confronting him being that I’m not sure if that is how it is supposed to look. I know in Survival, auto shot is down there on number 4, 5 or 6, depending on the fight. I would’ve thought Chimera, Arcane, and even SS would be higher then auto shot, considering he has 2 piece tier 8 and 2 piece tier 9, am I crazy or do I need to address his dps?
Odi
He may have dps issues but even if he was doing 6k you would still see auto as top damage done, for mm it is haste that gives so much autoshot damage.
k, thanks, yeah, shows what I know, was trying to see if I could help his dps out, he’s mentioned a few times, that he thought he was capable of more dps, and I’m sure that he is. Will just assume he’s doing it right then. . . thanks again.
hi guys, read some of the comments regarding MM build, primarilly im an SV hunter doing top end raids and hitting between 5.5k and 6.5k depending on buffs etc, anyway i tried MM spec with tier 8 gear and found it pretty lame in DPS compared to SV but once i had picked up my tier 9.5 gear which seems to be over the top with hit rating, i gemmed up with some armour pen and obviously agility and OMG my DPS was hitting 7k +
So my opinion is that if you get top gear MM is the one, if your gear is still pretty low stick with SV
Drog
okay, my DPS is ultra bad……. about 1.8k lol i am a MM hunter and i have been using the shot rotation from this website and my DPS did go up to around 2k lol i get kkicked from some raids due to this and its really getting me down any tips on gear… it does need enchants i know but if any friendly tips can be given, feel free thanks all!
(contor – sporregar or what ever lol)
I have read Every one of the posts in here. I must say props to the admis and contributers for a debate that fosters ideas instead of a ePEEN fluffing.
That said, here is my thoughts…
I play MM and have for some time now leaving SV behind when I was tired of the rotation. I noticed my DPS dip a bit during this time until I got the rotation down to a science.
I placed the abilities into the addon “Watcher” and hotkeyed everything through bartender. Placing the shots in this order.
I open with this….
#showtooltip
/stopmacro [noexists]
/run for i=1,GetNumTrackingTypes() do local n, t, a, c = GetTrackingInfo(i); if string.find(n, UnitCreatureType(“target”)) then if t~=GetTrackingTexture(i) then SetTracking(i); end end end
/cast Hunter’s Mark
/petattack
(that changes my tracking to the appropriate target type automatically and casts hunters mark and pet attack)
I next follow up with this
#showtooltip Serpent Sting
/cast Silencing Shot
/cast Rapid Fire
/cast Kill Command
/cast Serpent Sting
This is kind enough to blow my KC and RF for me and shoot s SS and Sting at the same time it starts my autoshoot.
From there I use
#showtooltip Chymera Shot
/cast Silencing Shot
/cast Rapid Fire
/cast Kill Command
/cast Chymera Shot
this makes sure I keep my abilities poppin whenever I chymera
after that I ….
Aimed Shot
Then….
Steady Shot…. unti my cooldowns come back
Chymera Shot
is priority #1 and Aimed Shot is #2
This set of buttons has made my DPS go through the roof!
Hey all,
Is there an addon that depicts available shots on screen AND prioritises them for you?
I’m aware of the cooldown addon that flashes shots as they come off cooldown but is there something that works in conjunction with that and shows available shots (in order of customised priority) for you to mash?
Yes, I’m lazy…isn’t that what a lot of addons are about?
Thanks in advance

Hi guys! ive been reading information on this site and all the posts, and well im debating also about MM and SV .. and agility Vs ArP , im doing SV right now, and i have tier 9 gear, .. jsut recently got duel spec to try MM but i saw a decrease in my dps, from 4.5k in 10 man ToC to 3.4 k, not to mention the fact that it sucks in heroics since things die so fast i cant go through half my rotation ..
im always second to rogues, and warlocks.. and mages >.> and now fury warriors are kicking my butt too, dont mine the rogues
my husband is one of our top dps in our guild, but we are both geared and i will like to be closer to him on the dps charts.. he pulls 6-7k dps in 25s and im down to 5.. i know i can do better, hunters deserve to be top dps
so plz help, heres the link to armory http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Velen&n=Sheccid any suggestions. comments, etc will be appreciated.
Glyph steady shot and take the 3 points out of focused aim and put them into improved arcane shot and use the rotation above, you are way over the hit cap and focused aim isn’t doing you any good, Another option is to put the points into improved steady shot and take arcane out of your rotation, but when I did that I saw a dps decrease…possibly due to the fact I don’t stack armor pen at all (Currently attempting to get my hands on the armor pen trinket from forge of souls…so far unsuccessful), once you do that you should see a nice dps increase, if you are doing 5k as it is I could see you at 6-7k with these improvements.
I am Looking for the best MM Build, If anyone has some advice It would be greatly appreciated

Hey Frostheim. Thank you by the way for the advice on Marrowgar, I will bite the bullet on the Sorbid Sting lol, which is okay because it is better for the raid<<Mission Objective. But I have another question if thats okay. I am decided to resec in MM, and I get the shot rotation that you put down and I will practice religiously before I bring my new self to raid. But I tried too look for where Readiness falls into the battle (please let me know if I am mistaken and overlooked it). What is your opinion on when to use it and how to use it for best results in accodance to damage done? Also, does the trinket play into the replenished Cooldowns? Thanks again in advance.
Member
Did 10M ICC last night, found out that Readiness doesn’t replenish your trinket. But Readiness is extremely helpful on Suarfang because I had the wonderful (<<Sarcasim) job of kiting the Blood Beasts woot(<<< Also Sarcasim), it was very hard. If I was getting backed into a corner and all my movement impairing and SV spells were on CD, pop a Readiness, and back at it. By the way, sorry to add another question to my previous post, but is you Strats on Saurfang on the way? Suppose still workin on it lol, I know that you get every intracate detail and you don't feed up BS so I completely respect and understand. Happy Hunting Frost.
Once again i will say you cant find the best spec through a forum. The creator has differnt gear then you gemmed differnt and there is so many factors to consider. You have to test them out through a spreadsheet known as Shandaras spreadsheet. Search it on the interent download it and if youfollow it correctly you should get a dps increase. I dont know where some of you guys are getting your facts from saying that surv is better then MM depending if you have high enough Armor pen? That is inccorect. You should transition to MM depending on your GEAR! Uld, TOC, and ICC all top damge Hunters use MM becuase it matchs there gear to give them more dps. Use a spreadsheet and compare. DO NOT go to a target dummy and assume this spec or this talent point is better becuase i can do more dps on a target dummy. Its for a small use and a general idea. Impornat thing is to follow your rotation and have a mindset of waht your going to do ,Addons help and definialty Learning from ELITIST JERKS helps you increase your dps. they answer almsot all of your questions.
The BEST MM build eh?
Short answer is, there isn’t one.
It depends on several things, your ARPen score, hit rating, rotation ect…
I routinely am top DPS in pub raids on my server, you can check my setup.

My macros are above with rotation.

In my opinion, I don’t like the idea of macro’ing shots together, especially Silencing Shot. There are so many occasions where I need that to be off CD at set times, and not on CD because some macro spam’d it. In the following situations, I have found it VERY useful… Rounding up caster adds, especially in the new ICC five mans and Lady Deathwhisper, interupting Jaraxxus, pissing off the Faction Champions, and stopping the Twins from healing. Yeah, yeah… A rogue could do it but I enjoy being at the top of both the DPS and the interupt charts. Feels good.
On a possibly elitest side note, if you find macroing the pressing of two buttons into one makes a noticable difference in your DPS, you may have more problems to solve then macros. Don’t get me wrong, I use macros for shuffling targets, quick targeting bone spikes and snowbolds, and fight specific MD sequences.
Wait which is best DPS since patch 3.3? Still SURV?
Ok got a problem i have hit a brick wall, and even regressed in my dps for survival since i have improoved my gear. I use to do like 7 k dps in raids. Now IM LUCKY IF I GET 5 K. My gearscore is 5477. I am very frustrated have tried different variations of the standard cookie cutter surv spec and nada. My shot rotation is HUNTERS MARK, BA,SS,EXP,AIMED, AND STEADY SHOT. I time my cooldowns so i use exp as a priority and steady as much as i can all the while keeping my ba and ss up on target ofcourse. My priority if ba and ss is up is kill, exp, aimed, ss 3x’s if i can. I just got my 2nd spec to mm from your guide, hopefully this will get me back into 7k land and im not getting beat by dks with a gs of 4450. I have heard that surv isnt can hurt your dps bad when you have high gearscore. im hit capped but my haste is only at 12.72 or 417 rating. could this be the problem with my survival? i use to be at 453 haste with my older gear.

DPS4U – http://www.warcrafthuntersunion.com/2009/09/the-best-hunter-dps-spec/ should help.
I dont know what the hell is going on can someone help me out here? im seriously bout to delete this hunter…i went from high dps to crap dps since i got my new gear . redsmith ner’zhul why am i getting nerfed for having better gear? i just did mm spec and rotation same dps as surv maybe a little higher..am i at a point where im just between good gear and great gear? do i just have to wait to get geared up to 264 all the way to get my 7k dps back?
i had 47 % crit with my darkmoon card of death replacing mark of supremacy trinket ..did get more.. got to 4.5 k on dummy as opposed to 3889 k dps i did with mark of supremacy. now mos is an item level 245 and darkmoon card is item 200. will 2 % points more crit make that much of a difference?
@Aurial
While it’s nice to have silencing shot available for the rare times you could interrupt, you’re losing dps by not using it every time it’s available. My focus is on raiding, and hunters are never looked at as a primary source of interrupts. Other classes are much better for that role. I’ve looked at raid logs and I gain about 100dps by having it macro’d to every shot. If anyone is looking for more info on how to improve dps I would strongly recommend watching some youtube videos by Kripparrian. He’s one of the best hunters in the world and I’ve seen a noticeable increase in my dps after implementing some of his suggestions.
To all SV noobs, here come “s the mighty MM all go to hell…………….

hey guys im new to this site, i have some serious problems with my hunter.. i have top end gear, im rolling the fel-glaceir bolter(bow wont friggin drop in icc) and i was wondering if its my noobishness or if others are having a similar problem..but my dps is shit to put it bluntly
i can manage to kick out 4.5k on the hc test dummie and around 6k in the right circumstances in 10/25 i mean theres mages with rubbish gear doing more dps than me, im marksman specced recently changed from sv cos i heard its best suited for higher end gear and i have just over 800 arp..still farming fos hc for the trinket but it will never drop..anyway i got the gear/spec ( i think) i was just wondering if any1 could help me out a bit
I VERY rarely get beat in DPS… Ever.
I am MM and PVPMM.
Surv is NOT the high DPS NOT NOT NOT
This is a eyeopener for alot of people. As far as the new gear goes… watch being overstacked on hit rating and low on crit agi and arp.
You will have to look at your stats.
If you wanna be epic dps as a hunter your going to have to do some homework on what your caps are and where you are at. What can you improve on?
Petts we are basically all over hit… i think i speak for everyone when i say the crit and haste on 251 thru 264 geared mm hunters suck for haste and crit.. the question is which stat is bringing our dps down is it crit or haste…Crit i agree but you cant gem for crit cause geming a 20 crit gem will give you less crit then a 20 agility gem will. so if we are all maxed out on agility gems like i am and still only have 48.89 % crit then wtf do we do??? My HASTE is at 285 (8.69%) the haste cap for mm hunters is somewhere around 453 correct? So if you cant increase your agility cause your maxed out, and your haste sux and crit sux what do you do? find different combos of gear that are lower lvl but increase your stats in those areas ok…but basically being a high gear lvl hunter sux please if you have 245 gear and lower surv hunter keep your gear you have so you can keep putting out that 6k dps because your crit and haste is higher that this shitty 251-264 gear.
lol why use arcane shot? i got 900 armor pen and the global cooldown coming from arcane shot just messes my dps up. i get more from steady then arcane.
Well its good to hear, I guess, that other high geared hunters are having the same problems with our dps seeming to regress with the better gear. I’ve been pulling my hair out trying to figure out my dps issues, I have about a 5900 gear score and I am the highest geared dps in my guild although I am sick of getting out dps’d by other classes that I used to blow out of the water. I’ve tried bringing haste up, arm pen up and messing with my build but nuthin seems to change where I’m at my dps isn’t horrible but definatly should’nt be getting beat by DK’s and locks. I just need to know if im where i should be or if I need to keep working on stuff. My dps with only my MM buffs and HM is about 5800 on the heroic target dummy and about 7800 on the expert dummy, Does that sound about right? My toon is Gonore, The underbog. Feed back would help TY.
Ok from what i saw that shot rotation is not the most usfull for max dps in raids in my experiance i have used :
Serpent sting/chimera/steady/arcane/steady/aimed shot/steady/chimera
if done properly chimera has just come off cooldown and you will not have missed any shot dmg.
as a not you should use rapid fire in place of arcane shot seeing as it is you lowest dmg shot and same goes for readiness. also my talents have a big thing to do with my overall dps (granted in a yr this will be all null and void)
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent#cxdMzZ0eAfoAzGhsx0Aoc:aihz0M
Wow, that build is so bad words simply fail me.
3/3 Hawkeye instead of getting Improved Tracking?
You took 3/3 IHM, 3/3 Imp Arcane and 5/5 Efficiency while skipping Rapid Killing, Piercing Shots, Silencing Shot, Rapid Recuperation and Wild Quiver. Your BM choices, while I like where you’re going with that idea. The tradeoff to get there simply isn’t worth it.
Your rotation is suspect, you want to get your instant shots off first then cycle through several steady shots. It isn’t necessary to weave your instant shots in between your steady shots. Maybe I’ll do some target dummy testing just to be sure, but it doesn’t look good my friend. Just for giggles I plugged your build into female dwarf and it came back with a 2276.62 dps loss for me. Might be back to the drawing board time.
I really don’t fully understand all the rotations starting (or close to) with Chimera Shot. I’ve always used it at the end on my rotation, and this a marks hunter that has yet to be beaten out on dps by a sv hunter unless they grossly out geared me. Chimera does 40% of damage DONE by your serpent sting, not damage it will do. So those of you who are using it at the start, yes, getting that additional damage in comparison to a normal auto shot, but not as much as you would using it at the end of your rotation. I know it’s made up later on in the rotation, but I don’t see the point using it at the start. As for the Aimed Shot deal, that’s is always the first shot of my rotation (obviously HM and serpent sting always go prior) increasing my damage with all of my shots for it’s duration, then again, I am spec’d to make it one of my heavy damaging shots. It also took a while to realize that most of my damage output (just because of global cd’s and such) has, and probably always will be my auto shot, since you get more auto shots in in comparison to anything you could possibly pump out.
Now, I’ve tooled around with the hunter for over 3 years, changing specs, leveling, raids, pvp, and custom rebuilding my specs without the need or want to copy anyone’s spec, just doing it to learn, and fully understand the capability of my class. Obviously, I’m pretty sure it’s already apparent that it’s going to be a close competition between mm and sv for best dps, and I’ve seen some sv hunters do some insane dps, but so far, equal gear, I haven’t found one that can keep up with a skilled mm hunter.
well i shall try your way but the rotation and build is for proc trinkets and just right haste while also staying in a long fight without running out of mana, because we all know that it isnt good dps if you have 5kdps for 1-2 mins rather than the 4k dps over the full fight . i will admit though a few talent changes have been made since i had played my hunter last, damn friends moved to alliance server so must remake lol.
Cyrena, you want to use Chimera Shot early to get the most benefit out of it. You lose out on dps by waiting to apply it untill that much later in your shot priority.
Kajirr — You shouldn’t be going OOM anyway. The only time I really run into mana issues is when I’m in a 10 man without any form of replenishment. Even then I just drop to viper for a few shots then switch back to hawk.
Well i have tried my way with the MM hunter and i love that specc… But i cant see why Arcane shot is in the rotation.. Tried it out and my dps actually dropped a bit..
My rotation atm is :
Hunters Mark
Serpent Sting
Chimera Shot
Aimed Shot
The just spam Steady shot untill global cd is over on chimera or aimed…
Arcane i only use when moving around as i cant use Steady shot before i cant stay on the same spot for the cast time..
Member
Hello my Dps i belive is crappy low for my g/s which 5592
my shot rotation is
hunter mark
serpent sting
chimera shot
arcane shot
aimed shot
than steady shot
my dps is in the low 4′s white and low 6′s for special shot
my speed is 2:37 my a/p is 6329 hit 309 (over) crit is 53.49
what should my dps be..i hear all these ppl saying how there highest on dpsand im in the mid to low end
thanks for any info
Well i had that same problem a few weeks ago..
But then i was told by a friend that i should remove arcane shot from my rotation And just go with
Huters Mark, Serpent sting, Chimera Shot, Aimed shot.. Then just spam Steady Shot till cd’s are over…It raised my dps a lot.. And if u are MM hunter u only need 7% hit rating.. And around 600+ ArP… If u got Needle-Incrusted Scorpion from FoS Hc… U got great crit chance… My opinion is that Arcane Shot is a waste of mana and should only be used when moving around… And it worked great for me.. Rasied my dps with 2,2k…
But if that dont work for u i would say get recount if u dont already have it and go for the training dummies and see what rotation works best for u…
Hope u can use this info..
I have found I get my best DPS using the above recommended rotations, however when fighting single targets(and sometimes multiple if the tank can hold good aggro) I substitute Multi shot for Aimed shot due to the fact that Aimed shot resets Auto shot. Those of you with Recount know Auto shot is still where we get the most damage and a poorly timed Aimed shot will hurt you, where as Multi will not reset Auto shot. I still use Arcane in my rotation, but after reading some of the recent posts, I will be re-evaluating that as well.
Hey everyone, must say before i say anything else this site is awesome deffo glad i came across it.
Everyones talking bout optimum rotations etc etc and the old To arc or not to arc is coming up…i only bother using Arcane when Silence is off CD and tie them up together coz of the no global on silence apart from that its mildly useful on the run if you’ve got a prolonged movement in which case it gets popped at the start of my movement
Also on the topic of Talents…
i must say i prefer being mm to surv, in my guild im the only mm hunter everyone else is surv and we’re all resonably geared the same and my dps is always 100,200 higher than theres. No doubt they have bad rotations as everyone else says surv should beat mm…but MM all the way for me!
Why does the elitist jerks “best possible dps” topic say that AiS goes before Chimera? It looks like it’s been updated, and I don’t think that the “top guys” there would be stupid enough to be fooled by the tooltip, would they?
Generally I’ve been reading here, but I still check those forums from time to time.
AiS gives a debuff to the target that increases your damage to it. … get my macros from above and this is the BEST rotation I have found.
Hunters Mark (macro to autotarget)
Serpent Sting
Aimed Shot
Chymera Shot (macro above)
Steadyshot till aimed comes up
Aimed shot
Chymera Shot (macro above)
Steadyshot
Steadyshot
Readiness
then aimed and chymera every cooldown and steady between.
Makes a BIG difference in DPS.
And keeps rapidfire and other cooldowns firing as soon as availible.
But aimed shot doesn’t actually do that, it just decreases healing on the target. Read right on the site here, the aimed shot explained column.
your right lol… I read it wrong, redoing rotation now
@shadedragon
idk if soeone already answered u
whole thing is tl;dr
but that happened to me too and there wass a buff on me called Abominations might (increases AP by 10%) some DK thing probably
but i think it replaces TSA
also it kept refilling time on it so i guess that might be it
@consort
yes its called watcher
So far I’ve only tried two different rotations: the one mentioned on this site and
Hunters Mark
Mark of Supremacy (your usable trinket here)
Rapid Fire
Serpent Sting
Silencing Shot
Aimed Shot
Chimera Shot
Steady Shot
then Readiness after Rapid Fire is over
and of course Kill Shot when available
My dps on the dummys stay between 3.5-4k but according to max dps i should be doing a lot more. barely going to hit 5 barrier on gear score so i know the gear is pretty decent. anyone have the most up to date rotation that can maximize my dps as a mm?
Member
Apologies if this sounds stupid (I’ve only just hit 80 about a week ago, and it’s my first 80 so I’m definitely still a n00b). Firstly, the rotation above has helped my dps 10 fold, so thanks a bunch. The question I have though is why is Serpent Sting the first shot instead of Arcane?
If I’ve understood the OP correctly, steady shot is basically our last ditch, when everything else is on cooldown. What I’ve found by using the rotation above is that i have to use steady shot 3 times before my arcane shot comes back up. So basically my rotation ends up being:
Hunter’s Mark
Serpent Sting
Chimera Shot
Aimed Shot
Arcane Shot
Steady Shot
Steady Shot
Steady Shot
Arcane Shot etc.
I’ve found if I start with Arcane Shot I can get another Arcane Shot in before I have to do my Steady Shots, so then my rotation ends up being:
Hunter’s Mark
Arcane Shot
Serpent Sting
Chimera Shot
Aimed Shot
Arcane Shot
Steady Shot etc.
Is it just that arcane shot is pretty mana inefficient? Or does it have more to do with the talents that boost steady shot so steady shot is worth more than arcane?
Again, apologies if I’m sounding dumb lol. Thanks a bunch!

Ok guys I need help. i can’t seem to break about 4.5k consistantly, and i know i need better gear (trinkets especially. But i don’t get to raid much because people on my server don’t seem to want to do the non ICC stuff anymore. I use the shot rotatation listed above, and have tested it out on the spreadsheets, and found that with the addition of another steady shot, all my cooldowns mesh nicely, but I am still not happy with my dps. Any suggestions? All my stuff is gemmed pretty much per the guide here I think.
Note: i usually run witth 4 piece Windrunner Conquest set, but have been trying to put together a solo set so my Armory might reflect that instead
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Thorium+Brotherhood&cn=Gungadiin
i keep seeing u mention that surv is the highest dps spec, but i keep hearing 7/57/7 is the highest spec, and all the big hunters i see use it. do u mean surv is highest for u at ur current arp lvl, or did i miss something somewhere.

@ Norey
“the serpent sting portion of Chimera Shot’s damage is based on the full potential of serpent sting, not how much is left or how much has already been done.”
I used to think that by using the shot that has the quickest cooldown I would be able to use it again (and for the most part this is true). But (theres always a but) through experience, it is always better to use your HIGHEST damage shot as soon as you could. In this case it would be Chimera shot (if your MM build). It is pretty much the same logic as the arcane shot, you use it first so it can come off cooldown first. The more times you use your Higher DPS shot then the more DPS you can make.
Steady shot is like our last ditch but then again is not. If you have recount, go practice on a dummy in org for a couple of hundred ammunition and youll notice that our #1 DPS is auto shot, #2Chimera and #3 Steady Shot. So it is important to not disregard Steady Shot and a dump shot. I know Arcane looks appealing because its an instant shot, but the truth is, in a raid boss fight, Steady Shot is our number three before Arcane. There are multiple reasons that I’m not going to mention here why Steady is so beneficial (Frostheim has done a good job at doing so) but if you follow the model above during a sustained boss fight, you should do nice DPS.
I think that the main problem your having is that your probably using your second shot rotation for trash mobs which is ok but you shouldnt pay too much attention to trash mob DPS. Although hunters have some pretty good burst DPS, a trash mob is never a good DPS indicator.

Thanks so much, that was a huge help
I want to know just bottom line is surv better and is amorpen okay to use with surv or only for mm
I like MM so much more than SV, but it seems SV does more dps…boo! I’m going to stick with MM anyway
well im using silencing shot i got it so should i get rid of it or what
i really need help im only doin like 3.5k dps in i have gear score of 5.2k and armour pen rating 491 35.08% fricken stressin me out i do the rotation as it says and i have the build it says to have like 46% crit what am i doin wrong T-T
Are u moving around while u are fighting that could be it if ur a hunter u dont want to move around that much unless forced to if u do try to time it like run and count out the speed on ur bow or gun then stop shooot the auto shoit then move again. Also what is ur spec are u survival or mm i find that arp only helps in the mm build. also are u gemming arp or wat? my arp lvl is 776 without trinket proc and im at 8k dps but soemthing else could be your trinkets. What type of gear are u wearing?? set peice gear or some raid gear+heroics??? another think watch ur hit cap rating u might be way over hit cap and need to trade some hit gear for something else.
i use arcane before aimed because of the faster cooldown so i can get another arcane off quicker, what do u think?
I see alot of people are quite confused about what shots to use and when to use them, same seems to be going for stats.
First thing people need to understand is that MM is very gear denpendant to output high DPS.
With that i mean Arpen of 1400 being the cap. its not until u reach 800 arpen that arpen gems overtake agility gems for further socketing and a good ranged weapon ilevel 245 + is a must.
Shots not affected by Arpen are chimera ,serpent sting and arcane shot, for this reason when reaching high Arpen amounts we leave arcane out our shot rotation on non movement fights and only use it when having to move and no other instant shots are up.
Talent choices different some people will invest in improved arcane shot others will spend it in improved hunters mark.
Arpen is only very usefull in MM build and Beast mastery build.
People still struggling at this stage of the game really should go take a look at http://elitistjerks.com/f74/t98126-mm_hunter_3_3_a/
They can explain it alot better then i can i know its a wall of text but it has everything u need to know to improve ur dps and get a better understanding of the MM.
Hope this whas of help to someone.

I have a quick question. I don’t get to Raid very often…once per week in fact…so gear upgrades come for me few and far between at this point.
However, last night, I acquired a Rowan’s Rifle of Silver Bullets, yes I know this is a tank item, no I didn’t take it from a tank, it went to offspec bid and I asked my GL if I could bid and so I did, and was the only bid at that. Anyway, that was an upgrade from my Felglacier Bolter from H PoS. My question…Is it actually an upgrade? I spent an entire “mana rotation” at the dummies using first one and then the other and didn’t see a dps upgrade. I see that the white dmg is quite a bit more as it’s faster but I’m just wondering if the loss of all the associated stats brings it down far enough that it isn’t really helping me.
Thanks alot.

Hello All,
Frist time i have seen this site and i have to say its awsome! I hit 80 about 4 months ago and i seem to be having major DPS issues. Just a quick sum. of my char: I have the standard 7/57/7 build, gear between 232-245, 4000 AP unbuffed, 41.1% Crit, hit 190 haste 268.
Ok one of my main questions is do you use this shot rotation at all times? What i mean is if I am in a heroic 5 man and killing mobs, am i using this rotation rather than multi-shott and volley? My main problem is i can not seem to get over the 2.5k dps area. People seem to yell at me because they say im not doing better dps.
I have read through all the guides and it seems that i have to improve my haste and hit numbers and get some better trinkets. Other than that am i on track or should i be doing more DPS?
Erik you wouldnt miss cause ur hit rating should be high enough were nothing should miss
Guys Aimed Shot does shit to uyour damage all it does is rduce healing effects by 50% or somthing liek that but it does give ranged attack power…
Btw
I’m a 5.7k gs hunter, My rotation
was
Serpent Sting
Chimera Shot
Aimed Shot
Steady Shot x4, or 5 maybe
But i realised that
Chimera
Aimed
Serpents
Steady
Is better dps gets my dps at 8k and it just stays that even goes up to 13k…
Only Scrubs use arcane, it does like 3k damage as a crit…
First of all, the reason why you use arcane in your typical shot rotation (pre-ArP capped) is because the Arcane shot mitigates armor … it uses magic so its like getting an ArP arrow (unless the mob has arcane resistance. Second … MMs hunters rely upon nothing more than PHYSICAL damage … meaning white damage, hence autoshot doing the most damage. So don’t gem Arp till you are at least 800 ArP, then after that gem ArP and use Serpent, Chimera, steady x 3, rinse repeat (because when you are ArP capped all your arrows will give the full ArP; like what Arcane did, except there is no resistance). of course ArP is a little senseless against clothies.
I’m not sure if this comment will ever be read, and I don’t believe it has been addressed here (but I could be wrong), but I have a question: when you say, “you always want your Hunter’s Mark up because it increases your crit bonus damage,” is that because of the Marked for Death talent? Because the talent sounds a bit similar to the Noxious Stings talent, in that it has two separate clauses independent of each other. It “increases your damage done…on marked targets, AND increases critical strike damage bonuses” on several shots. Am I correct in assuming that the crit bonus does not depend on the target being marked?
I came up with my own shot rotation as MM, And I like the results…
Hunter’s Mark (Pre-pull)
MD (Pre-pull)
Arcane
Serpent sting
Chimera
Aimed
Steady
Steady
Steady
Then just repeat the rotation as such (without serpent sting of course =P )
you guys are leaving out multi shot. if there are more than 2 mobs always fire off a multi shot. first off it will daze the targets it hits which will make steady shot do more damage… secondly, my multi shot ALWAYS crits. so your hitting 3 targets with 3 to 4k damage in one burst. in bg that accounts for alot of damage done. and when raiding, the rule of thumb with me is this, 3 mobs multishot, more than 3 mobs-always volley. volley will crit like nobodys business. and if you have 8 mobs all of them are recording hits of 2k here and 15 k there and 3 k there. in 5 seconds youve just quadrupled your damage output. and once the number drops to 3 mobs, bust out with a multi then lay into the nearest mob with the above listed rotation… playing whack a mole. but include multi. and aimed always crits huge too. use it. and once you hit lvl 80, you have so much intelect that running out of mana is not as big a problem as it used to be. so dont worry about conserving shots. waste them… go to town. and in bg, dont forget about scorpid sting. drop a scorpid sting on a mele dps class then hit them with chimera and boom, 10 sec disarm. couple that with an eagle or owl pet, plus your readiness ability and you can really screw up the other guys game plan. pair readyness with silencing shot as well, and you are just knocking hunters dk’s mages rouges druids healers all over the place. they wont really get whats happening and once they start to squirm, they fall apart completely. you ever watch a hunter after youve silenced him for 3 seconds…? he starts jumping all over the place like a chicken with no head. a healer turns tail and starts running. and a dk with no weapon is just a brick.
This is with silencing shot/ kill command macro’d to all shots
hunter mark
MD to tank
Bloodfury (racial)
serpent
chimera
aimed
rapid fire
readiness
chimera
aimed
steady (til chimera is off cd)
chimera
aimed
rapid fire
steady (til chimera is off cd)
rinse and repeat
best rotation I have found, HUGE BURST!
Admin or Anyone else know a site like this for Warlocks?
i have a hunter and this site helped me very very much!

#showtooltip Auto Shot
/cast !Auto Shot
/cast [target=pettarget, exists] Kill command
/cast Steady Shot
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear()
Is a macro i got, it does not use the cast sequence… I use it alot and find it very helpfull to time auto shot and steady shot so you dont miss (almost not) a “vital” auto shot
Take arcane shot out of your rotation unless you need to move. You get a higher DPS return by using steady shot which will proc improved steady shot. Go check out elitist jerks if you need to see the actual numbers.
My rotation goes something like this.
H Mark
Serp Sting
Chim
Aimed
Steady until chim CD is up
ZZuki
You are seriously killing your dps with that rotation
Mark
sting
chymera macro above
aimed
in the macro it fires off rapid fire
steady shot waiting for chymera and aimed
DO NOT USE READINESS UNTIL RAPID FIRE WEARS OFF!!!
the second rapid fire fades, readiness and chymera macro above again.
rinse and repeat.
I see a huge number of people saying “don’t macro”, and this surprises me. I have been a hunter class leader in the past and then, and now, still top damage meters, and I always macro my rotation. It frees my mind to be able to watch the floor, move as I need, trap, HM, or whatever is necessary. I’m surprised to see so many people against macros, but at the same time, I guess it helps me stay on top of the meters. So… carry on!
Hauk can u please put your email in the here? i need help on making macros work if u can help me do that

Arust,
I have something to add about Arcane Shot. I have done some heroic dummy testing using your rotation. I have witnessed around a 200-300 DPS decrease while using Arcane Shot when Rapid Fire is active. The rotation that I found to be better was…..
Serpent Sting
Silencing Shot (Use this as your shooting Serpent Sting)
Chimera Shot
Aimed Shot
Rapid Fire
Steady Shot
Silencing Shot (Whenever available)
Chimera Shot (Whenever available)
Aimed Shot (Whenever available)
Steady Shot (If none of these above abilities are available)
After 15 seconds put all your shot on cooldown one last time (Inless you just did) and then use Readiness and repeat the above process besides Serpent Sting.
I have a iLVL 251 Weapon with around 360 ArmPen. This was also tested with 3/3 Improved Arcane Shot (Frostheim’s Cookie Cutter MM Build)
5.7k gs gemmed full out agi, tried arp build (1315) but wasnt critting enough and raid movements were too much for me so went back to agi, agi is not too shabby for mm, when i was arp my volley dps would suck, but i could see aimed and stead shots hit harder, but since encounters require so much movement decided to go back agi and dps is actually a little better due to critting alot more, on my arp build my crit was around 49% now it sits at about 70% with 10 man buffs im a little under hit cap 233 (nelf) but dont seems to have a problem missing, my passive arp is around 600 still but with only 2 t-10 pieces , maybe looking to get 4 for set bonus depending on how much my aimed and ss will suffer, as for rotation i go……
hm-md-rapid fire-silence-serpent-chimera-aimed-readiness-chimera-aimed-steadyx3-chimera- aimed (glyphed for chimera so 3 steadies) and hit target dummy for around 6600,,, still get out-dps’d by the sv hunter in my raid grp, but she knows how valuable my ts aura is so its all good lol, but you guys should try that rotation out, it is pretty good, just remember to keep rapid fire up as much as possible for auto shot boosts

with my hunter im not lvl 80 yet but i keep runnin outta mana and i was wonderin when to use viper is there a better time to use it then when you cant cast any spells because you went oom, and if you use viper do you just cast autoshot? or do you use other spells while your in viper? also if you do use viper whens a good time to switch back to dragonhawk?
Hello. I got a question.. I’m using this rotatiot:
Hunter’s Mark
Serpent String
Aimed Shot
Chimera Shot
Steady Shot
Steady Shot and etc..
but my dps is still like 4-5k. Do you have any answer of that.. What’s the reason to have my dps that low since i have full icc gear + 4 heroic icc25 items on me.. I got 68% Armor Penetration and 65% critical chance.

I’ve never used ANY macros in a raid environment before. I plan to start using them when I get round to it, however I have one question:
I have a mount macro which is essentially
#show
/cast (Flying Mount)
/cast (Ground Mount)
Would the same thing not be viable for the priority system (so you could shpam it to hell =p) e.g.
#show
/cast Chimera Shot
/cast Aimed Shot
/cast Arcane Shot
/cast Steady Shot
I realise that it is not ideal, as holding off of steady shot for just under a second (about 0.8 seconds) so you can get off a Chimera, Aimed or Arcane improves your DPS. However I was simply wondering whether or not a macro such as the above is viable.
Thanks in advance,

Hi Guys, I have been noticing that some of you are looking for a good shot rotation Macro that will help with your DPS. Well I am here to tell you that I have one that I use and I am hitting a steady 6k on Heroic dummies and I bang out anywhere from 9 – 12k DPS in ICC. I am currently at work ATM but as soon as I get home I will post it up for all you hunters.

Ok, Here is the first one I pop.
1.
/castsequence [combat] reset=7 Chimera Shot(Rank 1),Aimed Shot(Rank 9),Steady Shot(Rank 4),Steady Shot(Rank 4),Steady Shot(Rank 4),Steady Shot(Rank 4); [nocombat] Serpent Sting(Rank 12),Silencing Shot
The second one is the following. Remember I am an engineer so you can disregard the Enchant I use for the logSplitters. Which is line 3.
2.
/cast Kill Command
/cast Rapid Fire
/use Logsplitters
/use Blood Fury(Racial)
/castrandom{target=Pettarget.exists} Kill Command
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear()
I just keep spamming the 1st one after the second one and thats it.
You will also need this one as well if you are already in combat.
3.
#showtooltip serpent sting
/console Sound_EnableSFX 0
/cast Silencing Shot
/cast serpent sting
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear()
/console Sound_EnableSFX 1
Have fun and Enjoy. Let me know how they work for you.
Whats if im not arp speced, should i use arcane?
Late to the party, and saw this on another page here, but:
“And an important note: Chimera does it’s full damage regardless of how long serpent sting is up — the serpent sting portion of Chimera Shot’s damage is based on the full potential of serpent sting, not how much is left or how much has already been done.”
OMG, this changes everything!
I seriously thought it was 40% of the damage serpent had done, and would hold off on using it until serpent was almost gone whenever I could… and I guess I gimped myself.
Seriously glad I found this site… now to see what else I’ve messed up for the past week of me being 80 and doing heroics.

My rotation is the basic MM rotation from the guide iv’e noticed that without raid buffs its nearly impossible to reach my average DPS witch in my 5189 GS gear (Add on) is 3.9 to around 4.5k I know its low it may be a skill problem but i don’t like the cool-down rate for SV i think it is horrible. i practice a lot and i find that the rotation owns all PVP and has a lot of burst damage to it… I’ve also noted that if you add a steady shot before and after every shot you dps should go up at least by a little bit. this rotation is awesome i almost always have the shot i need ready and active for use sense as a hunter in ICC i almost always am on the move i like having the instant shots that i do. Also i think the Jump Disengage and Jump Shot guides are amazing thanks a lot makes my moving a lot easier and on top of that my guildys are like WTF witch is funny over vent… this site is really helpful and awesome

Thanks for posting this Boss. I got blessed out in instance and subsequently booted, after the tank of course, by a warlock who didn’t like the fact that I was using the steady shot near the end of my rotation. Right before he booted me the little dirtbag so “Read a hunter guide. It may help.” I couldn’t win for losing on that run. LOL. Ah well. Vindication. Thanks again. ;0)

Wow this is a noob thread. I got tired of reading incorrect suggestions. People are so bad. Go to elitistjerks.com and actually get some help.
Hi Guys I am new to the game of warcraft, this shot rotation is based ona lvl 80 char but what is the best shot rotation for ppl still getting to lvl 80 as I do not have some on the shots in this rotation. I am a lvl 27 MM Hunter my shot rotation is:
Hunter’s Mark
Serpent Sting
Aimed Shot
Arcane Shot
Multishot(sometimes)
While leveling i recommend doing Beast Mastery, it makes life simple: Send your pet, Serpent Sting and spam Aimed Shot until dead… that simple. (Grab Glyph of Aimed Shot first too)
