Warning: This is an outdated Wrath guide. For current information, see the level 85 Cataclysm version of the guide Here.
This conversion guide is a simple reference for level 80 hunter stats. Find out how much crit, ap, and dodge that agility on your gear gives you at lvl 80. Convert that pesky hit rating and crit rating into hit and crit percentage. The following hunter conversions are only good for lvl 80. We also cover how much your hunter pet benefits from your stats. We’re not going to bother with lower level conversions because, frankly, you should be busy leveling, not micro-managing your gear choices.
Hunter Stat Conversion at Level 80:
Ratings 32.79 Hit Rating = 1% Hit 45.91 Crit Rating = 1% Crit 32.79 Haste Rating = 1% Haste Attack Power Agility Armor Penetration
Hunter Stat Conversion to Pet
Pets Gain: 22% of hunter AP 45% of hunter Stamina 40% of hunter resistances 45% of hunter armor 12.85% of hunter AP as spelldamage 100% of hunter resilience 100% of hunter hit rating, as hit and expertise – but drop fractions. Thus if you have +5.99% hit your pet gets only 5%. Focused Aim talent does also benefit the pet.
Pet Tanking Conversions
Bosses have a 5.6% crit chance 82 resilience = 1% reduction in chance to be crit

Thank you very much, there are no other sites that i could find that are exactly like this and ive been looking for quite some time
Seriously, thank you so much. No one has this info right now. Great hunter info.
hi,
relly like your blog and have a question:
…”Hunter Stat Conversion to Pet
Pets Gain:
22% of hunter AP”
you mean hunter ranged AP so i can put Careful aim to the equation and its AP bonus or only AP from items?
ty
also
1agi = .01058 crit%
Hello,
really like your site and am in the process of making myself a better hunter. In your opinion how important is armor penetration. For example I am looking at two pieces of armor One gives me an overall increase of 1% crit, and 1.6 more DPS to white damage. The drawback is I would loose 59 points of armor penetration. Is it wise to do so. BTW Hit % and Haste % do not change with either piece.
Reckart – What spec are you?
Crit and Agil are better across all specs
Survivalist look for stacking spam
MM look to stack intelligence over spam
BM just stack more agility
I would also suggest looking at the armor pen guide – as hunter’s cap out with armor pen, and MM hunters with 10% pen can disregard that talent.
Hi, I have a noob question.
What is the difference between ranged attack power and attack power? Does attack power affect your ranged attack?
I’m sorry if my naivete is appalling.
Zaerr, lvl 74 from Kirin Tor
I take it that pets gain no dodge bonus from the player? I’m wondering if Aspect of the Monkey also helps the pet dodge…
“Focused Aim talent does not benefit the pet.”
Wasn’t this changed in the recent patch to now effect the pet as well? Don’t remember where I read it though.
“BM just stack more agility”
why would a BM stack agility over AP?
“22% of hunter AP”
Thus your pet gets twice as much out of ap vs agility. (assuming 2ap=1agil item cost wise as it is in gems)
Great Stuff, Really helpful
BM stack’s Agility because Agility adds AP *AND* crit. (and originally, 1 gail = 2 ap but that got patched)
Attack Power is better for BM than agility, FYI (because so much of BM dps comes from the pet, the AP transfer to pet is far better with AP over agility). Other specs prefer agility.
im lost on this one lol..im a Marksman currently im at 1192 agility / 36% crit RAP is 5250 buffed / unbuffed is 4383 im a JC and have 3 dragons eye gems in gear for 86 AP and have some agility gems epic at 20 agil each . ok question was or is should i just stack agility and forget AP .. Add as much agility as i can. ? Im mostly raiding and some heroics. pleas advise any of you as i have a hard time understanding all that ap/ agi math …grrrr.. ADD sucks . me like shiney..
As a MM hunter you want to stack agility.
thanks ..great website btw.
ok i removed all my epic 86 ap gems x3 and added x3 20 agility epics did this and gained 1% crit to 37.44 but lost 250 AP buffed. im huntarded i mean confused.. how does this increase dps overall. im assuming in long fights its better?
AP for BM as AP transfers to pet too, and if you do recount on raids you’ll notice your pet will do nearly half of your dps, sometimes more but rarely, assuming if you are glyphed correctly and using the right talent tree, so AP will increase both pet and hunter’s dps. Most of the talent tree in BM focus on buffing the pet and hunter too, which is why you’ll want full raid buffs on both you and pet all the time for maximum efficiency, and this does annoy pallies.
Agi is better for MM because 1 point increases AP, crit, and HASTE for the hunter. Check out the EAP guide for details why agi is better for MM. There are a lot more in MM than Surv or BM(shot rotation and when to time skill cooldown ).
i have a serious question. Is crit better then agil in huge amounts? I am an MM hunter and i love to soket crit. I rarely use the new 20 crit gems i prefer the orange 10 agil and 10 crit gem, beacuse roughly the combo gem give of course the agil but the total crit rateing if i rounded correctly is around 15 crit rateing. but with the popular 20 agil you only gain abotu 11 crit rateing. Alot of hunters are calling me crazy and they all super stack agil. they only do the 20 agil red that i described earlyer. The only other time they would not socket it would be in meta and if they need hit rateing. i am truely repulsed by the agil stacking. because i have very simalr attack pwr to other hunters but i have way more crit. i currently since i got the belt of dragons and my 3rd piece of teir 9 have 44.20% crit chance. while another hunter i know with relivively similar gear has nearly the same attack power(mine is 5099) but he only has 30.35% crit chance. it is kind of a personal goal of mine to have 50% crit unbuffed. of course i get it with a few raid buffs(in paticular the feral raid wide buff
i love those fuzz balls) also on a side note i don’t like how people kind of push haste off to the side. I think behind crit and agil, haste is somthing i realy regret loseing on a new peice of gear especialy for armor pen. Also a 2nd question the MM talent pierceing shots does 30% of the shot damage as a shot if i understand it correctly. so lets say on of the shots that procs it does 1000 damage normaly with the crit(i never crit that low but im using an easy number) so even with the talent it still does 1000 damage but 400 of the damage is put into a dot form. That is good and stuf because i understand it increaces dps because as it is damage per sec and it spreads it over the dps u would usualy be doing. The problem i see with it are two things. 1. it is kind of a dps mask yes on recount it shows higher dps but in overall data it is exactaly the same. 2nd while i was doing VOA one day i noticed i crit while it was about halfway through and it went back to full. now im assuming that it didn’t just add the new damage to the new dot and make the dot more dps i think it overide it. so instead of doing the 400 from my previous example lets say midway through i hit for another crit for 1000 so it would proc again but now since the other was interupted the overall damge would be
600(instant damage)+200(interupted pierceing shot dot)+600( 2nd shot instant damage) +400(2nd pierceing shot dot assuming it went full)=1800 damage where if you just had the 2 crits it would be 2000 damage. I know it is technaly a dps increase but it is worth loseing the damage that could bring down the boss? NOW I COULD BE ALL WRONG and it might just add the damage of the new crit to the dot and still have the old crit damage ether added to the new dot or in some shadow invisible dot. but if this was true i would imagine that is would be way overpowered. can u plez answer all of these questions im a very curious hunter. if you want to look up my charactor on wow armory( or another site that you prefer)(gul’dan colthepyro) can you tell me if i am getting a bit over into soketing crit
thanks for everything i use this site for alot of important things for my hunter ^_^
when i listed my first problem with pierceing shots i accidently typed “overall data” i ment overall damge done if i say overall data anywhere else please assume that is what im refering to.
Agility is better than crit for hunters. BM hunters prefer AP to agility (because their pets do so much of their dps).
I’m not sure what you mean by dps vs. overall damage done — piercing shots damage shows up on both. Note however that recount does some odd things with raw dps that makes it a bit off pretty often. Overall damage done is a better metric.
Yes, piercing shots overwrites previous piercing shots, even if that means it’s writing a lower dot over a higher one. It’s still a fantastic dps boost and I strongly recommend it for MM.
If you really want to get 50% crit unbuffed, I think that should be easily attainable. I’m over 46% and I gem for agility, and prefer gear with agility over crit. However your overall dps will be lower with all crit gems than with agility gems.
Hey frost, gotta say this is a first time post and your site is awesome, been playing my hunter since the day original wow came out and well…. We just rule, frak rogues
well I’m torn between two trinkets from wintergrasp, the crit or ap trink…. Just wanna know what will gimme more dps, they are both great and I’m 80% pvp just want ur thought on the matter- 190 ap vs 95 crit… Hmm lol
ty for this site i looked for this for a very long time.
i’m a MM / SV hunter and where i look i see only 20 agi gem.
is that better then critt ( its for the socket bonus )??
i hope i get a answer
greats locti
was that one run-on sentence about crit?
You’ll have to let me know specifically what you’re referring to, Tangoor.
I’m survival, should I stack agility as well?
Kawliga – Yes. Only MM hunters are currently having to debate between the Agility vs. Armor Pen issue, and BM wants to stack attack power. But agility is universally better for SV hunters.
but how much Agility is better, versus increasing APo by what amount? For example, there is a weapon enchant that gives +26 Agility, and there is one that gives 110 APo. Same type of choice with pants embossing. At what point do you go for the bigger number of APo versus the smaller number of Agility?
(I am an SV hunter, btw.)
I know you’re not into PvP and all, but I’ll try anyway.
What would (any of) you choose for a Beast Mastery hunter in PvP? Agility gems or AP gems?
It really depends on your team strat and your gear. If you’re going for something like a beast cleave where steady pressure is your goal, you might do very well with AP. If you’re relying more on the hunter than pet, agility will help you more. And of course if you’re behind the resilience curve, you can consider resilience gems
Thank you.
sorry, but im not sure i get it: if agi gives the hunter ap then shouldnt that same ap give the pet a bonus as well? and if i may also ask for im not sure i read the answer if one was posted: whats the differance between standard ap and ranged ap if there is one?
thank you
Ironzulu / kilrogg.
I am so confused by the whole hit thing. It says on my charecter tab that I have 324 hit rating. By my understanding of the above conversion chart that equals over 10% hit.
1)Is that too much?
2)Should I gem/enchant for agililty only at this point?
3)How much hit rating can I give away and still be “hit capped” (if i really am at this point)
Also I leveled and heroic’ed a bit as BM until a few nights ago when I switched to MM.
I have he rotation about right I think but now I am confused again I have never really had any interest in armor pen.
4)When I get my new helm should armor pen be a consideration?
Please help I am looking for ways to squeeze out as much dps as possible since ranged dps seems to be popular on my server and I love my hunter which was my 1st main before I went with the flavor of the month and rolled a pally
confused – you are 2% over the hit cap. a hunter needs 8% at least 2 “never miss”. as far as ive researched you never want 2 use hit gems unless u have 2 so start stacking agi gems and replace some of the unneeded hit gems. at lv 80 you shouldnt need many, or any at all.
as far as arp goes you need a base of around 700 before anything else is added as what i get from this site. ive also heard that most apr gear is in the higher end dungeons so you wont come across a lot. with that said it seems you would need 2 stack apr gems to even reach the base let alone make even the “soft cap” (read there guide on arp) before getting your hands on arp gear youd want as MM. do you need arp 2 be MM? no, but from what ive read it helps a lot.
as BM/SV im stacking pure agi. they may not be the best while BM but ive seen improvement none the less. Cat may be a ways off still but i dont like/want 2 think about all this extra stuff that wont be around later as it is now or even at all
will all the reading it seems like a hunter lvs as BM then start raiding as SV until a number of arp gear is found 2 go MM…
Hello, my main problem, and this site is starting to help clear a few issues out somewhat, is that my HR is way too high, and I can’t figure out what I need to do to lower it. Toon is Bullduster on Khaz’Goroth realm. Thanks for any advice.
Thanks Frostheim! What a help this site has been. I only recently dinged 80 on my hunter and was struggling to make sense of it all. Between this site and your podcasts, I am learning so much and becoming more confident. I mean, I am still confused where spreadsheets and that are concerned, but the information I am getting here is helping me tremendously. I REALLY appreciate it.
But ive read that 1 Agi = 2 RAP (this is the reason one chooses +16 agi enchant on boots instead of AP enchant!). Dont tell me i’ve been wrong the whole time?
It does not.
On the bright side, that will be the case in Cataclysm, at least according to their current plans
I just need a simple answer. If an item has 10 agi and another has 10AP, then the pet will receive the same percentage AP from either. True or False.
First, thanks for the great website and all the info!
I can’t seem to find the conversion rate for ranged weapon dps and it’s not in your list? I’ve read that weapon dps is the absolute best stat, but by how much? +1 dps on weapon = how many AP, etc.? Apologies if this is answered somewhere (I’m sure it is) but I can’t find it.
Doh! nm, I see that you do actually have 14AP = 1 dps. I realise that it’s a bit more involved than that when comparing stats (e.g. comparing two weapons, one with 5 more dps with another with x amount more agility) since max dmg of the weapon, weapon speed, the fact that other stats give other bonuses (agility giving extra crit, etc.), but at least that give a decent ball park figure.
Please understand that these are stat *conversion* rates — not stat weights. In other words this will just tell you how much attack power one agility gets you, etc. It won’t directly tell you whether 1 agility is better than 1 haste.
When we say 14 attack power is 1 dps, we’re talking about white (auto-shot) damage only, as that is the conversion.
If you’re interesting in stat weights — how much actual dps you get from 1 agility or 1 ranged dps, you’ll want to read the guide on using spreadsheets, found here: http://www.warcrafthuntersunion.com/2010/02/how-to-choose-gear-using-spreadsheets/
Nice, that spreadsheet is exactly what I needed. Thank you again Frostheim. Keep up the awesome work!
