Welcome to the Level 80 WotLK Hunter Hit Cap and Hunter Hit Rating Guide. We’ll talk about everything you need to know in WoW about hunter hit, miss, hit chance, hit rating, hit cap, pet hit rating, how your hunter hit rating affects your pet hit rating, and your pet hit cap. We’ll also explain how Focused Aim and the Draenei racial affect your hit cap. Every raid hunter should know the basics of hit and miss chances, what the hit cap is, and understand how this affects gear decisions.

The Hunter Hit Cap Basics

As a level 80 hunter, you sometimes miss when you shoot your target. Your chance to miss depends on what level mob you’re attacking.

Level 80 Hunter vs:

Level 80 mob: 5% miss chance
Level 82 mob: 6% miss chance (heroic boss)
Level 83 mob: 8% miss chance (raid boss)

This means that against a raid boss, for example, 8% of your shots miss – that’s your hit cap. By increasing your hit by 1%, you’ll have 1% more of your shots hit, therefore you’ll be doing 1% more damage (actually, it’s a bit different because of complicated stuff explained below). So it’s very much in our interest to increase our hit chance. However, since we can’t hit more than “always,” going above 8% does not help us at all, which is why it’s referred to as the Hit Cap. It’s the cap of the amount of hit you can have that will benefit you.

We hunters have three ways to increase our hit chance: “hit rating” found on gear, the Focused Aim MM talent, and the Draenei racial bonus.

Hunter Hit Rating

For a level 80 hunter, 32.79 hit rating gives you 1% hit.
263 Hit Rating is needed to reach the Hit Cap

With 3/3 Focused Aim 164 Hit Rating is needed to reach the hit cap
With 2/3 Focused Aim 197 Hit Rating is needed to reach the hit cap
With 1/3 Focused Aim 230 Hit Rating is needed to reach the hit cap

Therefore you would need about 263 hit rating to reach the hit cap and ensure that you (and your pet) always hit against a raid boss.

Furthermore, your bonus hit chance from hit rating is also applied to your pet’s hit chance. (note that fractions are dropped, so if you have a +5.99% hit chance, your pet will get a +5% hit chance – reaching the WoW hit cap against lvl 80 mobs, but not bosses).

Focused Aim
This talent is high in the Marksman tree and gives you +1% hit chance per point of the talent. This is an easy shortcut toward the hit cap so that you don’t have to rely as much on gear.

As of patch 3.1, this Focused Aim hit chance is also transferred to your hunter pet!

Dreanei Bonus
The Dreanei have a heroic presence that grants a +1% hit to everyone in their group. So if you are a Draenei or have one in your group, this counts toward reaching your hit cap. Obviously this ability also extends to your pet!

I should note that it is still not a good idea to roll a Draenei hunter — even with this bonus, you still have a tail. It’s just not worth it.

Pet Hit Chance

Your pet is a level 80 character just like you. It has the same miss chance as you do, and the same hit cap as you do. So increasing your pet’s chance to hit by 1% increases your pets overall dps by 1%. But how do you do this?

Any bonus hit you get from gear with hit rating on it will transfer to your pet (with +hit chance fractions dropped). The bonus hit you get from the Focused Aim talent also increases the hit chance of your pet (this came to us in patch 3.1).

Futhermore, your pet gain expertise equivalent to your hit rating. What does that mean? A typical raid boss has a 6.5% chance to dodge all melee attacks and a 14% chance to parry melee attacks from the front. By being at the hit cap, that means your pet cannot be dodged or parried (though since pets attack from behind and can’t be parried anyway, only the dodge matters). Note that while your pet gets 1% hit from the Dresnei racial, that doesn’t translate to expertise — and Focused Aim transfer is really buggy at the moment as well.

What Does It All Mean?

Every 32.79 hit rating you gain will increase your chance to hit by 1% and will increase your dps by about 1% — but only until you have +8% hit. (or less, if you’re fighting lvl 80 mobs). It will also increase your pet’s hit chance and dps by about 1%.

I’ve seen a lot of hunters talk about how hit rating is the most important hunter stat, and have seen a lot of hunters say that the very first thing they go for on gear it to reach the hit cap – ignoring all other stats – then they start working on equipment to give them AP, crit, Agil, etc.

Frankly, that’s just stupid.

When you’re choosing between two pieces of gear, you should choose the one that will increase your dps the most. And that may not be the gear with the most hit rating. After all, 75 attack power is clearly better than 10 hit rating. So always choose the gear with the biggest upgrade.

Who cares if you still miss 2% of the time (2ish % reduction in dps) if you’re doing 4% more dps because of it?

The only reason reaching the hit cap would be vital is if we end up with boss fights in which we cannot miss (for example, we have to Tranq Shot a boss when it enrages, and if we miss, the raid wipes). But so far of those kinds of fights don’t exist in Wrath.

Many hunters carry around a few spare pieces of high hit rating gear that they swap in just for boss fights — after all, a lot of that hit rating is just going to waste against trash mobs. This isn’t vital, since trash mobs shouldn’t be a problem in your raid progression, so you don’t need to squeak out every last drop of dps against them. But if you like to be on top of the dps charts for the raid it’s something that will help.

Some Technical Info

Miss chance is calculated by the difference between your weapon skill (bow, gun, crossbow) and the mob’s defense skill (which is 5 * level) using the following formulas:

If the difference between your weapon skill and the mob’s defense skill is 10 or less (ie: mob up to two levels higher than you):

5% + (Defense Skill – Weapon Skill) * .1%

If the difference between your weapon skill and the mob’s defense skill is 11 or more (is: mob three or more levels higher than you):

6% + (Defense Skill – Weapon Skill – 10) * .4%

Interestingly, it seems that WoW uses a two roll system for special attacks. (ie: roll to see if it hits, then roll to see if it’s a normal hit or a crit), as opposed to the one roll table for regular attacks. This means that the increased hit chance also increases your chance to crit — again, up to the hit cap. For example: you have a 30% chance to crit. Then on that extra one percent of the time you hit there’s a 30% chance that your hit will turn into a crit. Thus the 1% hit gives you 1% bonus to your auto-attack dps, and a 1.3% bonus to your special attack dps. So you’re total bonus dps for 1% hit is something close to 1.15% dps increase.

This is great thanks! I have been looking for some Hunter lv 80 hit cap info and this makes a lot of sense. I’m at lv 80 MM and just at 233 hit rating (with my Aimed shot talent I am at +8% hit chance). When I get to use my AOE no one can catch up to my overall damage. I have beat every single class with similar level gear. I had trouble once against a DK, but after I got a new piece I smoke him every time. Hunter AOE Rocks!!!!!

    I’m glad we could help!

Note however that Volley will be nerfed by about 30% in the next patch (3.0.8) :(

only thing i can see is post what the magic hit rating number for have focused aim it would be helpfull

I just updated with the hit rating need to reach the hit cap with various amounts of the Focused Aim talent.

Hey, I loved this post and made things a lot clearer – but im stuck on 4.% crit.

Whats the best raiding set for a hunter that can help improve my hit cap to at least 6-7%?

  6. Anonymous

question at 80 what’s a good grit percentage?
Would it be smart to sacrifice crit for hit?
    Thanks

Takiah: if you go to our Gear section you’ll see our pre-raiding gear selections for both normal and heroic dungeons.

Anonymous: 1% hit is a *bit* better than 1% crit; however, 1 hit rating is way better than 1 crit rating. My goal is to get back up over 30% crit while at the hit cap — but that will probably require lots more 25-man raid gear. Generally below 20% crit is low. Mid 20s is good. 30 and higher is great crit.

  8. Takiah

Yeah, i a major crit lover. Im on 29.63% crit & without my hunter buffs I have 2982 AP (with dragon hawk and TSA : 3610).

However… I have 140 hit rating which is only 4.27% hit chance. I, like you said – want to have 30% crit and then be hit capped.

If I show you a link to my hunter do you think you could have a look? Im a raider (GM haha /raid leader) but I also love my arenas.

Please don’t facepalm, I know im not the brightest crayon in the box ^^

Okay, so the first question is what is your goal? Right now it looks like your talent build is designed for a mix of raid and pvp (meaning you will not be optmized for either).

Let us know what your main goals are! I will also consult with Arust, who is the MM expert, and then we’ll weigh in.

  14. fang

    Hello,
great explanation of the hit rating mechanics. was at the cap (wich thought was 295 earlier), now have traded out some gear and took the 3 points in focused aim to try out dps with a lower hit rating. Starting naxx next week as a guild and wanted anyones opinion on gear and spec im running with so far. generally sitting around 2400 to 2500 dps in most raid groups. any comments welcome. love the blog

  15. Takiah

Hey frost, well my main focus being GM of our raiding guild is going to be pve obviously, but the reasons behind my having a bit of a mix is I am also part of a 2v2 team.

In terms of crit and hit i want 30% crit minimum and also being hit capped.

I do want to maximize my DPS for raids though but I was hoping I could do that and be able to keep my scatter shot.

Any tips on my MM spec is helpful though but you should know, I will not under any circumstances play BM :P – ever ;)

Let me know how you go, cant wait to hear from you – if you could send me an email when you guys have come to a conclusion and finished the article that would be fantastic but I will keep checking this place too =)

    Hi.
Great info have been looking for hitcap alot for WOTLK I just have one problem.

I have 3/3 in focused aim I have heroic presence since im draenie (yes with a tail..=)…) And I have 183 hit rating still it says then I hover abowe hitrating that it increases my hit of target 80 by 5.58% doesnt the talent and my heroic precence show up here? If so then I have 9,58% and can remove some hit rating gear is this correct?

  17. Frostheim
    Admin

Your tooltip will only show the hit benefit from hit rating on gear — it will not show your racial or your Focused Aim.

So with 3/3 Focused Aim and being Dresnei, you only need an additional 4% hit, or 132 hit rating. You are indeed over the hit cap!

  18. Anonymous

What is the hit rating needed for PvP?
Used to be 71 for level 70 I believe

  19. Huntley

Great guide. finally found something that isn’t full of randoms spamming pointless stuff.

One Question i do have though, I just finished my first naxx run on my hunter, now imo my gear is “better then avarage” since he only been 80 about 2/3 days.

My overall dps was around 2400 as BM/MM 50/21/0 imp stings/readiness.

Would that be about advarage dps with the gear i have or am i doing something wrong? because a mostly blue geared warrior didnt really have a issue stayin around 4-500 dps behind me.

    Link to armory:
    http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Vek%27nilash&n=Huntley

Note, at the time i had 232 hit/r which was 7% hitchance.

But just replaced the belt so lost some hit/r and am now down to 181 so may need to loose imp sting/readiness for foc/aim :S

Ive been toying with the idea of maybe shifting more into the MM tree, but im not 100% if id like it, or if id end up sucking for dps.

Any advice would be greatly accepted!
    Thanks in advance

  20. Huntley

Ill, now add, that since posting here, ive upgraded my gear some what.

  21. Thiart

Hi – I dont totally agree that 1% mis chance only lose you 1% damage.

In a long boss fight you can shoot up to anything of 600 shots, thus you will miss atleast 6 times. Thus in a boss with 10 mill health and you are top of damage meter doing 12 % of the damage = 1.2 mil damage in total.

K – you have a buffed crit chance of 38% – thus 2 of those 6 shots you will miss will be crit hits. Your avarage dps per shot is 2k – so you loose 8k with normal shots and those two crits say will be 2 x 8k hits thus you lose 24k damage that equals 2% of you damage. thus for each 1% hit you slack on you will lose about 2% total damage.

This gets even worse when taking into account pets damage, his attack speed is way higher that the hunters, thus more attacks in that time, thus more misses.

We have a hunter in our guild with a 142 (old hit cap) with the same gear as us he does 30% less dps on patch than the other 2 hunters in the guild.

  22. Huntley

Ok, im getting a little frustrated with my hunter now.

After supposedly upgrading my gear i seem to be loosing dps everytime, even though the items im replacing are much better then the old ones i have.

My dps has dropped from around 2400, down to a pathetic 1500 dps. i mean.. its totally embarrising. my gear is 100% better then my paladins. and i can hit 3k dps on him without even trying.

Ive tried messing about with gems, respeccing to MM, back to BM, tempted to try SV or maybe the random MM/SV hybrid spec people are using.

I need advice and i think i need it fast before i end up just leaving my hunter in his little character selection screen and hit my paladin again.

I have hunters with green and blue gear out dps’n me.
I have hit cap, i have almost 30% crit, around 3.7k ap as BM
A hunter in my guild is blue/green. he has the most messed up spec ive ever seen in my life, he has a whole 1% hit chance ( no talents to help ) yet he still out does me in dps.

What the hell am i doing wrong? i used to top dps meters without an issue. and now im like 7th if not lower in 25 mans. 4th or 5th in 10 mans.

I have the argent ven rep chest and “upgraded” to the badge 10 man tier 7. now looking at my character stats. i lost a little hit/r but eveerything else “increased” yet i lost dps. i upgraded to the 25 man naxx legs yet i lost dps. am i just being a tard or what because i have no idea wtf im doing wrong. enchanting wrong, gemming wrong..

it seriously got to the stage where the paladin is looking more interesting again.

Please help. any advice on rotations, gemming, enchating, spec. what ever. i need to get back to the stage i was at, or atleast better. before i do just leave the hunter.

  23. Twocold(Bloodhoof, US)

I’m going full BM/MM for leveling and raid spec (not 80 yet, yes i still have a life lol), and i seem do decent dps but my pet is doing INSANE dps against mobs. havent really got a chance to send anything against a raid boss yet to see how it will do but here’s my toon (yes my gear sux) but i’m pretty sure u see where i’m going with it.
    http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Bloodhoof&n=Twocold
Is this going to be any good in raids or will i be falling way short of where i want to be?

  24. Frostheim
    Admin

Your spec looks good. You have a couple of wasted points here and there that are clearly good for leveling, but even if you keep this spec at 80 you’ll do well in raids.

If you’re really interested in raiding, I’d definitely recommend moving some of your leveling-oriented talents over to more dps-oriented ones just to max your dps potential, but you are good.

  25. Twocold(Bloodhoof, US)

Huntley brings up a good point that i havent really been paying attention to. It’s not just him. I seem to lose dps every time I level, and last week I did better DPS than an 80 hunter, full T7, and im in T6/T5/wotlk blues. He used to be the top dps guy in our guild as well. any reason as to why other than blizz is nerfing hunters, yet again(*gasp*) all because people have nothing better to do than QQ over never being able to top the DPS meters. Hunters have every right to top the DPS meters in PVE(God forbid we ever are worth anything in PVP)

  26. Twocold (Bloodhoof, US)

I was planning on moving most of the leveling talents over to MM (top off frenzy, longevity and either go imp stings or imp hunters mark, not sure yet)

  27. Naess

Just one quick question, im specced 50/21/0 with 3/3 focused aim and have 199 hit rating in this gear, but it still only say’s increased hit chance by 6.07%, are u sure ur numbers are spot on?

Heres my armory link : http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Blackrock&n=Naess

Am thinking of MM for raiding after next patch (when they nerf readiness), to try something different for me, any comments?

  28. Frostheim
    Admin

    Our numbers are indeed spot on. 199 / 32.78 = 6.07%

The confusing thing is that your character tooltip does *not* show the bonus you’re getting from focused aim. It’s only showing the bonus that you get from hit rating.

So you currently are at 9.07% hit, 1% above the hit cap — which means you’re wasting one of your Focused Aim talent points :(

  29. jon Boettcher

what is the best dps spec now? I’m BM but every one keeps telling me survival is the way to go now. Any input would be awesome

  30. Frostheim
    Admin

Right now, BM is the highest single-target dps spec for hunters. We’re still not certain how that will change when patch 3.0.8 comes out though. (update 3/13/09 — SV is now the highest dps raid spec)

  31. Naess

Thx frost, thats good to know, i ve got other gear without hit so ill start swapping out some items, or respec. Thx for the guide btw really great info

  32. Tracker Andy

Still wondering what the PVP hit cap is now at Level 80.

  33. asdasd

WHATS THE PVP HITCAP ON 80???????

  34. Frostheim
    Admin

The hit cap against a level 80 target it 5%

  35. Hazelrah

This has proven to be the BEST and most down to earth explanation I have seen on Hit Rating for hunters. I had a decent understanding before reading your research, but now, I can go and tweak my DPS with solid numbers. Thank you for your informtaion.

  36. Lando

The relation to Animal Handler in this blog can misslead people to think that the talent is worthless

One point of Expertise decreases the chance that melee attacks made by the player will be dodged or parried by 0.25%.
Therefore, with 2/2 Animal Handler, when your pet attacks:
    *
From behind (as when doing dungeons or raids): enemy has a 2.5% reduced chance to dodge your pet’s attacks.
    *
From the front (as when soloing): enemy has a 2.5% reduced chance to dodge your pet’s attacks and a 2.5% reduced chance to parry.

So you want those 2 points in it to decrease the target to dodge your pets attacks.

  37. Júdas

BM specced hunters should notice a huge drop in dps since the nerf. I personally noticed that I could still top damage done but my dps had dropped dramatically (over 1k). If you are gonna play bm note that you should add arcane to your shot rotation as much as poss & dont forget that steady shot as been nerfed so if you are using an old style macro (steady & auto) you need to rethink your shot rotation.

Here is my old bm spec http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=ctbMzxtRwu0gsx0emoZx00b. The 7 points in survival really help. My old shot rotation – mark, arcane, serpent, steady (spam steady until arcanes off gcd & serpent needs reapplying).

Glyphs aren’t great but as bm you should definately have serpent sting & bestial wrath as majors (sting glyph mean more uptime helping with dps). Also use bw at every opportunity on boss fights. Hope someone find this useful.

  38. Extrix

    Finally a straight forward answer!

    Thank you!

  39. Sephrenya

I have leveled this charcater outside of dungeons and have found that my hit rating is only 52. I have been reading up on how to expand it. I have just receintly started doing dungeons UK/UP/CoS heroics….I know gear is essental, I am also keen on understanding. Is it possible to get some advice on some of the other mechanics of it. I understand that this maybe a bit of a large request, but if you dont ask, you dont get …*smiles*

    Thank you kindly in advance.

  40. Huntley

My advice for starters would be to work on your spec. theres a great spec for SV hunters somewhere around here.
    http://www.warcrafthuntersunion.com/2009/01/suvival-hunter-raid-talent-build/

You dont really need savage strikes to be honest not really worth the points. instead they could be used in focused aim to help with your hit/r issue.

go for the throat would only really need 1 point in it. 2 is a waste, so taking the points from savage strikes and 1 point from Gftt would give you 3% more hit + dran racial is 4% plus what you have now would take you just below 7% hit/r.

Also, good idea to have 3 points in careful aim rather then just the 2.
2 points in hunting party should be enough, esp with upcoming changes reducing it to a 3 point talent if i read right.

Theres lots of easy heroics to farm for a good amount of hunter gear, would recommend atlas to browse instance drops etc.

    Off top of my head,

    Violet hold – Gloves
    utgarde pin – belt
    utgarde keep – crossbow
    nexus – wrist ( also semi nice trinket with 55 hit/r )
halls of stone – Legs ( also LW epic avalible )

Thats all i can think of for now but its a start. you wanna be stacking and agility as much as poss as SV because thats where expose weakness finds is perfect love match.

    Also glyphs.
    my glyphs are:
    Glyph of steady shot
    ” of serpent sting
” of imp aspect of hawk
only minor thats really avalible thats any use is mend pet. atleast thats all thats avalible on my server.

really cant think of anything else right now. 1 am so kind of tired.
hope i atleast helped a little

    More info here if needed:

I keep hearing Surv is the new raid spec for a hunter so I was thinking of trying it out. I have ALWAYS been MM or BM but never Surv. My question is…… Frostheim do you mind hooking me up with a good shot rotation / macro?

  42. Frostheim
    Admin

Try out Survival hunter shot cycle guide in the guides section.

  43. Kiero

Personally I am not one of those hunters who have conformed to a SV raiding build and the massive explosive shot awesomeness.

Also I am under the impression that the end of the talent trees dont give you much per talent point until u get to chimera shot and explosive shot.

finally i have noticed that wrath raiding gear is stacking and stacking stam on everything and one way to use stam as dps is through hunter vs. wild.

Do you guys think hybrid builds are gonna come into play.
I am rocking this marx / surv build let me know what u guys think.

  44. Frostheim
    Admin

I gotta say I think you’d be better off with a full SV build. The talents before explosive are *very* good. Let’s take a look at what you’re skipping:

Noxious Stings: basically +1% damage per talent point. OMG.
Sniper Training: basically +1% damage per talent point. Actually more.
Hunting Party: mana regen for you and your friends (only need 2 talent points)
Explosive Shot: by leaps and bounds the most damaging shot in the game.

Your build is really interesting but…. you can take ranged weap specialization and get essentially the same effect with those talent points in SV. ANd explosive shot… you know every time you shoot it, it hits three times for full damage that is better than your Aimed Shot? With a much higher crit chance?

  45. cpdragon

Hi, i’m a blood elf hunter lvl 80 in spec SV. My current stats are
    4730 ap / 232 hit / 34,56% crit.
I have one talent point in Focused Aim. One simple question to you and very hard to me.
shall i keep the hit like it is or should i go to 8% hit so pet can get 7% hit ?

  46. Brew

Hi, i was a little confused. I understand the math for it, but i don’t think the hit cap is at 8%. I’ve run recount during various boss fights, and prior to gearing out some hit for increased crit and AP, i was at about 8.53% hit. During the naxx i ran, i had a total of 3 misses. Now i know 3 misses isn’t much at all considering my well over 3k shots attempted that night. But is the hit cap a guarantee not to miss against level 83 mobs. Or has it been changed to 9% and thus making hit cap roughly 296?

  47. Boredguy (IGN)

So, I was deciding o get AP or Hitrating on my gloves. I came here to look at what th hit cap was. Turns out i was just 10 below it in heroic epics. Threw the 20 hit rating on my newly onwed T7 gloves a i had it.

Oh, and in response to your post a little while down about wanting to keep hit cap and 30%. Well im at 32% crit and hit cap unbuffed and i have not one peice of 25man content. Have about 3-4 10man naxx peices of gear but thats it.

Well anyway thanks a lot for all the info!

  48. Blaknight

Hi, Was wondering if you could have a look at my spec and see what you think.. Should i take some points out of Focused Aim and go 5/5 Imp Hawk

  49. Frostheim
    Admin

Blaknight: with 1 point in Focused Aim you are that the hunter hit cap — this is good!

However I would recommend taking one rank out of Improved Aspect of the Hawk and putting it in Go for the Throat instead!

    Hey Frost,
Just running the numbers on your “Some Technical Info” section

If we can assume a Weapon Skill of 400

    Assuming a level 80 Mob;
    5% + (Defense Skill – Weapon Skill) * .1
    5% + ((80 * 5) – (400)) * .1
    5% + (400 – 400) * .1
    5% + 0 * .1
    5% + 0
    5%
    * A level 80 Mob has a 5% miss chance

    Assuming a level 82 Heroic Boss;
    5% + (Defense Skill – Weapon Skill) * .1
    5% + ((82 * 5) – (400)) * .1
    5% + (410 – 400) * .1
    5% + 10 * .1
    5% + 1
    6%
    * A level 82 Heroic Boss has a 6% miss chance

    Assuming a level 83 Raid Boss;
    6% + (Defense Skill – Weapon Skill) * .1
    6% + ((83 * 5) – (400)) * .1
    6% + (415 – 400 – 10) * .1
    6% + 5 * .4
    6% + 2
    8%
    * A level 82 Heroic Boss has an 8% miss chance

I was doing something wrong when I was figuring it out, so I was writing down my thoughts to get someone to point out where I went wrong, but I figured it out.. Looks like it mashes with what you said! Feel free to copy the expanded formulas.. I know you like numbers, but I’d hate to clutter up your well laid-out information. Great site, you’ve been making my Hunter raiding experience work for me, and no one asks me anymore if I pay my dues. Keep up the good work!

  52. Sasko

Alright, take know offense to this but on EJ and some other sites i have found that most people are saying the hit cap is 9%, on here it is implying 9%, up until now i have normally had 306 hit, but now ive replaced my gear with some higher gear levels, but not hit on them i had never had a problem before with missing even when i switch trinkets and have around 251 hit and one rank in FA, now im starting to wonder, im currently sitting at 247 hit now if the 295 hit cap was correct i would need 2 points in FA how ever if the 263 is correct i would only need one, could you please elaborate on this for me and tell me which is which or how they came to their conclusion. Could it be 9% includes your pet being hit capped?

  53. Sasko

  54. Haddar

Sorry if this was already covered, but I am trying to understand if taking the 3 points in Focused AIM to help reach my hit cap so I can pump all of my other stats with my gear is actually hurting my over all DPS. The reason this concerns me is where you mentioned that the pet also has the hit cap and the focused aim does not effect the pet’s. This means by increasing my DPS in this way I am also decreasing my pets DPS. Is it a wash or is it still worth doing? Do I end up with a higher DPS overall (just not as much as I assumed) or should I aim to max the hit rating without lowering the cap in the long run (which would maximize both mine and my pets DPS)? Thanks in advance, this is a quite useful post just a bit complicated topic.

  55. Swampdonkey

Quick question for you. Other then the +hit rating is there any other stat that improves your hit rating. I hav e not found one and i dont think there is. http://www.wowarmory.com/character-talents.xml?r=Greymane&n=Swampdonkey My hit rating is crap im going to respec to get the 3 points in Focused Aim, but should i go +hit rating crazy, cause it seems to me the less i miss the better my dps will be. My hit rating is 28 now and im doing about 1500 DPS or more on Heroic Boss. What should i replace with hit rating.

  56. Tharon

OK, so as I levelled to 80 I focused on AGI, STAM, and INT, with bonuses to AP and Crit. I am currently SV, with my AP at 3.7K and Crit Rating at 357 (25%), and AoDH on. Would it be worth my time to focus on getting new gear with Hit, or jist go with Hit Chants? Here is my Armory Link: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Stormscale&n=Twest . Mind you Crossbow and Bows are roughly a point or 2 away from 400.

  57. Tharon

Prolly should also mention that as of late I have started working on Haste.

  58. JOE

SO IM A BASICALLY NEW TO GE BEING AN 80. STARTING TO TO UBDERSTAND THE LITTLE QUITE IMPORTANT THINGS ANOUT THE CLASS. SO WHAT YOU ARE SAYING IS THAT W/ 3 OF 3 IN FFOCUSED AIM + A HIT RATING OF 164 IS CAP. I JUST WANT TO BE CLEAR, BECAUSE I CAN REJEWEL SOME PCS OF GEAR. THANKS

  60. JT

    great article.

something puzzles me tho, i’m hit capped at 9.52% from gear alone thus no focused aim for me. based on my hit rating my pet also should not have any misses but i’m seeing

    12% miss on Melee
    8% miss on Claw
    18.8% miss on Rake

stats are taken from recount in the heroic VoA fight with archavon. am using a cat.

  61. Tukytuky

Can someone tell me how to improve my tree? http://www.wowarmory.com/character-talents.xml?r=Antonidas&cn=Tukytuky&gn=The+Wrath+Of+Heaven

  62. bashel

ok well alot of the comments are blank for me odd? yes. well i am confused about the hitcap. i have all three points tanken in focused aim because one of the hunters in my guild told me the hit cap with all three was 197! in yours it stats
With 2/3 Focused Aim 197 Hit Rating is needed to reach the hit cap
CONFUSED!!! i am not good at math so i cannot figure out how you did that. if you could verify that your math is right i could save me a point where i could deffinatly find a good place for it =D thank you
    ~Bashel Lv 80 Hunter Draka~

  63. bashel

sorry about double post but…. ok so if i just put two points in FA i should be hit cap? i am at 207 with all three points way over hitcapped or just a little? CONFUSING FTW!!!!

  64. Frostheim
    Admin

I’m not sure how to make this article any more clear. Even if you don’t want to do the math, we’ve posted the results as plainly as we know how.

You can always assume that we double check all of the math before we post it to a guide! Yes, the math is correct. Your guild friend is either wrong, or communicating poorly.

  65. bashel

ok thank you very much. i reread everything after i commented and it made somewhat more sense.
love the site by the way by far best site iv seen

  66. Bull

Love the build an info you have shared just wanted to see if you can take a look at the build and gear to see what would make me better keep in mind the gear should be t7.5 ina day or 2 i raid an some PVP

  67. Lrh

Apparently I have 25 more than the hit rating cap from stats alone, and I also have 3/3 for Focused Aim. I could PROBABLY get rid of the Focused Aim points.

  68. Elriel

I know some of my gear needs to be upgraded, but I can’t to get to the hit cap. Here is my armory sheet http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Burning+Blade&n=Elriel

  69. Frostheim
    Admin

Elriel: actually, you’re over the hit cap. Note that when you mouseover your hit rating it shows your hit percentage *for gear only*. The Focused Aim talent is not calculated on that.

  70. Elriel
    Member

Then I must be looking at the incorrect stat because I see that my hit rating is at 234 and when I mouse over it shows 7.14%

  71. Frostheim
    Admin

Elriel: Correct. You have 7.14% hit from gear, but you also have 2 ranks of the Focused Aim talent, increasing your (and your pet’s) hit chance by another 2% for a total of a 9.14% hit rating. You are 1.14% over the hit cap. You can immediately ditch one rank of the Focused Aim talent — it is entirely wasted.

  72. Elriel
    Member

Oh, ok sounds good, thanks for the input. Glad I found you guys.

  73. bashel

OK now i am really confused one of my friends ingame uses elitestjerks or something like that spelling as his hunter go to site and they say with all three points in focused aim the hit cap is lowered to 197 and they say that hit % this is the site that he gave to me http://elitistjerks.com/f74/t37714-hit_rating/ i like yours better lol sides theirs is way confusing

  74. Bach

HELP!!! I’m hit capped (266) without focused aim, but even with a Draenei in the raid group, my level 80 wolf is still missing about 4-8% of the time in Naxx-25. I had the same problem when I used a point in focused aim to reach the cap. Am I missing something or did they raise the hit cap??? Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

  75. Frostheim
    Admin

Bashel: I see part of the problem. Your friend is looking at an outdated section of those forums that are showing old, old info from when the hit cap was different. If you’ll look at the top post, you can see they updated the information there (and this is why we have the “Reviewed and Accurate” date on all of our guides — so you know if they’re up to date or not).

If you look at the link you posted, in the very first post (which has been updated), their numbers agree exactly with ours. 263 is the hit cap. 32.79 hit rating gives you 1% hit. So take the hit cap (263) and subtract three ranks of focused aime (3%, or 32.79 * 3 = 98.37) and you find that with 3/3 focused aim you will need 164.63 to reach the hit cap.

  76. bashel

Thank you very much math confuses me to easily and the way you just showed it it made perfect sense thankyou very much

  77. Narscissa

I would like to echo Bach’s question regarding my pet’s miss percentage.

If you take a look at my wowstats http://wowwebstats.com/3qgihkylmgo21?a=x580000002e07db7 from a recent raid you will see that I show zero misses for my shots (I have 0 points in FA as my hit rating from gear is at 274, 8.36% vs LvL 80), however my level 80 Wolf is at around 5.5% misses for Bite and Swing.

These numbers seem to be pretty consistent. I won’t even pretend that I could attempt the math, but the percentage my pet is missing seems to be excessive even taking into to consideration that “fractions are dropped, so if you have a +5.99% hit chance, your pet will get a +5% hit chance – reaching the WoW hit cap against lvl 80 mobs, but not bosses).”
Is there something I need to change? Thank you very much for the amazing information you provide!

  78. Frostheim
    Admin

Please give us some concrete data and report back. The problem with looking at misses in a raid is that we don’t know what all you were fighting — keep in mind that there are various bosses/mobs that give a miss chance debuff (usually within melee range) that skews our numbers.

Head over to the boss target dummy and have your pet attack it for a few minutes and see if there are any misses then!

Love the info i got from here, and oohhhh so glad I looked. I was told hit cap was 5.5% for a hunter, so I’ve been trying not to go over that with gear and gems. I am currently at 190 hr, and 3200ish ap w/o dragonhawk on, but still haven’t been able to clear 2k dps. I was full on BM lvling thru 80, then switched to hybrid mm/sv (20/51) have gone from blues to several epics, and yet, much like many many others here, my dps seems to vary on a daily basis. seriously, one day I was in H HoL at 1800+ firmly in #2 behind a geared lock (>.<) and the day after in the same instance I was pulling a meager 1350-1400 dps. same gear/buffs etc. I can’t seem to nail the prob, so I’m asking for help. Here’s a link to my armory http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Doomhammer&cn=Duuk&gn=Ekahnum+Kopet

  82. Tdv

Hi, the info u gave me really helped me out but I feel like there’s more I can do with my hunter, but I have no clue right now lol. I’m an up and coming hunter, I don’t have the best gear but some how I do at least 2k+ dps in 10mans and in heroics. Is there anything I can do to better my hunter other than doing more raids and such?

Here’s the link to my armory: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Dawnbringer&n=Tdv

  83. Bitabinka

So this would mean that if I were fighting a lvl 80 player, I would need 5% hit rating, right?

  84. Warhoof

I kind of disagree with your statement that you should go for agil/crit/ap more than hit. My suggestion would be Hit/agil/ap/crit (thats prioritized, first being most important). Now, if you are hit capped but have no agil or AP then, sure, you need to redo your spec and redo your gear alittle bit. But, say, on a boss like Sapherion or KT, where the fight can be fairly long, and say you only have 7% hit and the boss takes 10 minutes, you’re losing alot of damage because maybe some of your harder hits are missing. Thats my 2 cents there.

And incase anyone is wondering why I put agil as second; Agility contributes to your AP and Crit at the same time, meaning you should gem for it rather than geming for just crit alone or AP alone. BUT this is what has worked out for ME. I pull 3500 DPS with just dragonhawk on and around 4700-5000 DPS raid buffed.

  85. Warhoof

Link to my armory if anyone would like to see what I’m going at:
    http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Galakrond&n=Warhoof

  86. Frostheim
    Admin

I’m not saying you should take agil/crit/ap more than hit. I’m saying you should take whatever is the biggest dps upgrade. So if you have a choice between 10 agil and 5 hit, you should take the agil. If it’s 10 agil or 10 hit, you should take the hit.

  87. Zaral (uldum

ok so if i have 3/3 Focused aim then i only need 165 hit right? so then, i have it capped and i have 235 hit but still miss and be.imba.hu says the same thing, taht i need 265 hit to cap even tho i have 3/3 in FA, im confused >.<

  88. Kraigus - Llane

    Hey Gang,

I just found this off google when I looked for Hunter Hit Rating. Since I read this, I stumbled around your blog abit. Good stuff! You’ve got yourself another reader.

  89. Aveeda - Scryers

So.. if I’m a draenei and I have 3/3 in FA, my hit rating cap is 131?

  90. Ley

Hi, i was wondering if the dual wield also makes a difference in hitrating, seems a 2 handed gives a less chance to miss then dual wield, but does this also have effect on your ranged attacks?

    grtz, ley

  91. Arthemystia
    Contributor

Ley, your offhand will indeed miss more often than your main if you dual wield. But it doesn’t affect your ranged hit chance. And as hunters, we’re not concerned with our melee weapons hitting. We’re only concerned with the stats they provide.

  92. Ley

ok thanks for the quick reply Arthemystia

  93. Hillrage

Here is my hunter build. Currently in 25 man raid i pull 4.5 – 5.1k dps depending how out of sync my shot rotation is. Feel free to comment and tell me any improvments I can make.

  94. Arumi

Just a comment on your “Some Technical Info” section. Regardless of whether or not they use a 2 roll system or 1 roll system for special attacks, the 1% hit will get you a 1% increase in DPS on your special attacks. Assuming you are 1% short of being hit capped and have 30% crit, you will hit 99% of the time, for 1.287x normal damage. Now if you increase your hit by 1%, you have 100% chance to hit, and 30% crit, you will hit all the time, crit 30% of the time for 1.3x normal damage. Doing the math on that, you still come up with a 1% increased damage.

  95. wakoo

so having more than 263 hit r is a waste?

  96. kaeldon aerie peak horde eu

some of its a bit 1/2 n 1/2, wot i did was get hit capped asap and pick up the epics and w8 till i had enuf hit to use em//spec focused, coz tbh u can have lots of crit n power bt if u dnt hit u cant out ur dps down, but yeah the are very usefu ^^

  97. Sky

Super site… Thank you so much. Cheers!

  98. Rhoako

Hillrage – Pretty good gear, all I would suggest is grabbing a +16 Agility enchant instead of Icewalker (+12 Hit Rating and +12 Crit Rating) enchant for your boots. You will still meet your hit requirements, while the 16 agility will increase your attack power by ~16 and lower your crit rating by 0.04 (which is a very miniscule loss compared to the attack power gain, as well as the other benefits of agility, in my opinion!) Aside from that, maybe grab some more epic gems!

  99. Jonestyle

    hey

question- A friend of mine told me something about soft hit cap being 8% and the hard hit cap being something around 22 or 23% i didn’t think there was anything that required a 23% hit rating, i scanned thru this and didn’t see anything about a “hard cap” did i miss something or is my buddy just blowin smoke?

  102. Frostheim
    Admin

I believe your friend is talking about the hit cap for dual wielding melee classes like warriors and rogues. They have one hit cap for their main hand, and another for their off-hand.

As hunters we don’t need to worry about that — we just have the 8% hit cap.

  103. Troy

I’ve been working on my dps for almost 6 weeks and although I’ve made improvements
I must be overlooking something. When you have time could you check my stats out and make any suggestions. Thank you.

Current:Haste=44,Agility=831,Hit=263,Power=4080,Strength=79,Stamina=1332,Damage=1326-1577. I must be way over on something and lacking elsewhere. dps is 2.8-3.2.

  104. Reanthei

Troy, your AGi is really low cause of all the PVP gear… survival is ALL about AGI, so consider BM until that stat balances out as you get pve gear. I just shifted some gear over to extra crit and grabbed focused aim at the lose of aim shot and saw my dps on the spreadsheet go up from 5.3 to 5.5k, so consider that talent alternative though i could match that with a grim toll and the crit lose would be even on dps to switch talents back, though movement based fights = bad timing chances on multishot

  105. Troy

    Thank you so much!

Reaper: there’s a lot of guides on the main page that can help you out a bunch, including spec, rotation, pet choice, glyphs, gems, etc. Chances are, some combination of those will produce a large increase in dps.

As for your hit, with such a low hit rating, you’ll probably want to gem and enchant for hit for a while, until your gear helps to supplement your rating. Until the hit cap, hit is (usually) our most important stat, even slightly above things like agility and armor pen.

    Good luck.

To point out one bug that didn’t make it in here- your pet’s expertise will not go up due to hit gained from the Draenei hit aura, and focused aim seems to be passing about half as much expertise as it should.

I didn’t read all the posted comments, but wanted to say thanks for the great site and info.

However I tend to disagree with you about what you said regarding trying to reach the ‘hit-cap’ first as a priority before worrying about other stats generally.

1st, most of the quest rewards and regular instances will at least give you some of the other stats you are looking for. So you should at least be in the ballpark or close just by simply playing the game.

2nd, it doesn’t matter if you have the highest Agi, Crit, AP, and Attack power in the game if you MISS consistently. Missing will cause the single greatest loss of dps over time in a raid or instance against bosses. Your shot rotation could be flawless as recorded by WSS and STILL our DPS would be terrible.

I would suggest to get ‘within’ at least 1.5% of the hit cap at least before even LOOKING at improving other stats. Once you do that…the other additions will reap geometric returns in DPS rather than going for stats vs hit-cap 1st.

Also keep in mind raid buffs when you do this and it will make the goal easier to balance if you are very concerned with pursuing other stat increases at an early stage in your gear/progression.

Again, thanks for this great resource.

    -Prometheus.

Prom — I think you misunderstood what I said. You should always take the biggest dps upgrade — and that will not always be hit. For example, if you have a choice between 20 hit and 60 agility — the agility is going to increase your dps a lot more (’cause there’s so much more of it!). Even though you’re still missing, you’re doing more damage than if you hit softer for less.

So don’t become obsessed with hit. Be obsessed with dps, and take whatever will increase your dps the most.

    — IMPORTANT READ —

The debate between dps and hit cap is ridiculous, to be honest…
i’ve wasted about 20 minutes reading down this list and if you’ve spent any time at all endgame, you’ll know that hit rating gear is so easy to come by that it’s silly !
    a) gem +hit if you’re not high enough,
    b) if you’re close but not quite there… throw a belt buckle onto your waist and grab another hit gem
    c) there’s a little hit/crit boot enchant as well as a weapon chant (but it’s way overpriced and not normally ever used by any hunter with any amount of pride lol
    d) if you have a problem finding hit rating gear, check out maxdps.com, or search thottbot or wowwiki or wowhead for gear with whatever stats you want/need

it’s not good to be under the hit cap, because if your auto-shot crits for 2.5k -3.5k or whatever, a miss means that your overall dps will lower, if you miss enough times, you’ll be poopoocaca and nobody will want to group with you again, ever, at all

or how about the 18k raid crits..miss one of those and everyone’s gonna laugh at you

so the moral of the story…is get close with your gear, but look moreso for AP, crit and agil gear so you can throw the odd +hit gem to cap you up
…and if you’re like me, and rolling a draenei, with the MM +3% hit talent, you’re only looking for 4% hit from your gear ! haha !

a.k.a. reroll draenei for the easy hit cap

    Hope this helped

    Hey Frostheim
You state that: quote”We hunters have three ways to increase our hit chance: “hit rating” found on gear, the Focused Aim MM talent, and the Draenei racial bonus.”
    How about Elixir of Accuracy?
    Great site :)

  117. Amanda

“I should note that it is still not a good idea to roll a Draenei hunter — even with this bonus, you still have a tail. It’s just not worth it.”

I’m actually a NE hunter, but become curious when I read the quote above. What’s the problem with a Draenei having a tail?

  118. Amalyssa

    Hi there,
I just have one question, what happens if you get more than 263 hit point?.. i mean it is a problem at all to have more hit rating then the hit cap?

    Thanks

    Admin

It’s not a problem to have more — it’s just any point of hit rating that you have over 263 will not help you at all in any way.

  120. Amalyssa

    Hi
First, thank you for the fast respond.
So if i understand right, whatever if i get more hit rating then the hit cap..if the new gear i’ve pick up is upgrading my Dps it is fine?

    thanks

  121. Vasili

I’m not the admin or an expert but I can safely say yes if you have more hit than necessary at any given time, but an upgrade with hit on it still increases other stats it’s worth it. With the way raiding ToC is currently structured you’ll more often than not be able to fix any ’side-grades’ with hit on them in a week or few weeks. Hit is being thrown at hunters in huge incriments now also, with several pieces having 40-50 rating individually, and the trinkets from triumph both with 128 hit can fix any problem you may have previously had. I’ve raided with as low as 215 hit, and as high as 353 hit and at neither time was there the availability to gain or drop hit. Also, at neither of those times did my dps ‘falter’ based on being hit-heavy. When you hit full end-game in other words you’ll probably have more than cap, from what i’ve seen unless you are lucky enough to get at the few crit/ap=/=arp trinkets.

p.s. Ty for puting together this guide, it’s still almost exactly within the scope (pun intended) of one of the more unique aspects of the hunter class, and one of the hardest to deal with while progressing.

Hi guys. Thx for the great site!

    2 Questions:

    1) With my current gear, I’m at 232 to hit. With my spec, I need 263 to be at hit cap for raid bosses. So when I’m in a raid, I use the +40 to hit food to get to the cap, and when outside raid I’m already at the hit cap for hero bosses or anything else. Is this a good strategy?

    2) Is it worth the GCD to put up Hunter’s Mark on a boss fight once the fight has begun?

    Thx!

  123. Odi from Proudmoore, formerly Ido from Uldaman ; p

Just my opinion, but I’d say putting up Hunter’s Mark is worth it, especially if you replace the GCD with a steady shot. The longer the boss fight the more that hunter’s mark is gonna help and make up for the 1 steady shot you lost.

basically im no genius wen it comes 2 working out theses stats and such lol,so everytime i get sum new gear i try it on,nd when i mouse over the “ranged dps” part of my char tab,if it goes up,im gonna keep that gear,is this right?pleez let me know

  125. Frostheim

No, that is not a good way of comparing gear. The only things that affect that are attack power (thus the AP part of agility) and hasste. That ignores crit, hit, and armor pen. You should read our EAP guide here: http://www.warcrafthuntersunion.com/2009/04/what-is-eap-and-does-it-smell-funny/

    Hi,

This is a great site. I love all your info it has been very helpful. I recently hit 80 and got some stuff. I was wondering if you would take a look

    http://www.wowarmory.com/character-talents.xml?r=Lothar&cn=Bulkhogan&gn=Crafters+Of+Light

I am sort of confused on Focused Aim. I did some tinkering with my specs and wanted to see how it looked.

    Thanks

  127. TheBrit

Been reading thru the forum which has been very helpful by the way. But Im at a 35% crit while i have polearm equipped and 33% crit with fist and dagger. But my hit rating is a mere 115 with daggers and 88 with polearm. I am still working on tier gear too. Is getting the appropiate gear the only way i will get my hit up? Lastly is it a bad thing to have a great crit with a not so greta hit? Thanks.

  128. deathweapon

so im hot capped with almost 9% hit chance (i have no gems or ench, thats purly gear) but when im in a raid the mic scrolling battle txt addon i have is still sayin that the boss’s are resisting some dmg (like 200 or 300 from every fifth shot) so not much but still some. will they always resist some even with hit capped?

death – Yes, some mobs/bosses will always be immune to certain types of damage, absorb damage, or have resistances. As long as you aren’t outright missing with shots, there’s nothing wrong.

  131. Ankhilla

I Have a question about attack speed. how it affects the hunter and what is a good number to have . my current attack speed is 2.50

  132. Arthemystia
    Contributor

    Ank – http://www.warcrafthuntersunion.com/2008/12/hunter-haste-rating-and-haste-cap-level-80/

That should cover it. Haste isn’t a terribly important stat for us despite being beneficial, and usually falls beneath most other dps-oriented stats.

  133. Casp

Lol at myself. I felt like a total huntard because I am a casual player, so I pvp and some easy pve, sometimes filling vacant raid spots. Haven`t done to much raiding since TBC, but could not see why my dps was so low in raid. Lol again. Hit rating. Had totally forgotten about the basics. Thanks for info posted. I wonder who would be the laugh of the day if I had asked in GChat about my dps problem…….

  134. Jason

So if I have focused aim (3/3) I only need a 165 HR? Any more is a waste right?

  135. Arthemystia
    Contributor

I wouldn’t say any more is a waste in that case, Jason. Any more means that you can respec and start taking points out of Focused Aim, putting them into talents that will yield greater dps.

But yes, with 3/3, you only need 5% hit chance from gear/gems.

  136. hmmz

I have 365 hit rating.. its my gear that have so mutch hit rating..

  137. Christine

Hit cap is 290 or 263? I was told that the hit cap went up from 263 to 290, is this true? I am currently at 296 hit cap, so if i am over hit capped i’m going to swap out a gem for agi instead.

Thanks and this is a great site thank you .

So a few days ago my 10man team and I cleared 10toc, 10voa and 10ony in a few hours and at the end of the night i looked at my overall recount and through all 3 of the raids, i had missed 2 autoshots, 1 aimed shot and 2 chimerashot(serpent) shots. Now thats obviously a hugely miniscule number compared the the shots that I fired off, but I am above the hitcap at 266 (8.11%) and I was wondering how i could possibly miss those shots in those three encounters.
Just curious to know what would create this result.

  142. Frostheim

Most likely that was from Archavon and you were in the hit debuff cloud for a bit that radically reduces hit chance.

  143. Quiver

Ive read this guide/all the other guides and have gotten a lot of information from it. I have found it easy to reach the hit cap and have a high critical chance. I’m a survival spec, and I have 286 hit rating and 34% crit chance, which i got easily from the tier 9 set (which is now extremely easy to get, with the random dungeon tool) and i added precision to gloves, put hit rating gems in yellow sockets. I don’t have focused aim and I’m a troll, so no extra 1% from Draenei. IDK, just spend a couple days doing randoms and get your tier set–it will be easy to get hit capped.

  144. taregan

i’m wondering if you could give me some tips about imroving my hunter

    improving* :p

  146. Cea

With new gear from raids i struggled to keep hit capped for a while as nothing seemed to stack hit, so was constantly juggling talents to remain capped. Now with a bit of gear from ICC the hit cap is now looking after itself at 282 Hit with no trinkets/Focused Aim.

Along with this i have 6400AP unbuffed and 56% Crit unbuffed.

Just to make sure I haven’t misunderstood anything. If a hunter is over Hit Cap, not a little but A LOT, the hunter will not lose DPS. Its just wasted if you gemmed or enchanted for it?

Personally, I’m way over hit cap. I’m staying away from the newer trinkets because of it or at least until I start getting enough badges to get the T10. That should radically reduce my hit which may make it logical to get the newer trinkets that have Hit. Still running the newer instances to get the trinkets, sadly they haven’t dropped for me. Loving the gear I have got though. I’m a MM / Eng hunter, gemming for Agility and a little crit depending on the Socket color, I’m currently sitting at 50.75% Crit, 4566 Attack Power, and 1610 Agility unbuffed. 404 hit from gear.

If there is anyway to get rid of hit besides replacing gear please let me know!!!

  148. Raybeez

    Frost,
Could you take a look and see where I can make improvements on my BM hunter.

My dps has really gone down with the new gear upgrades and hit rating is over cap’d any help or advice on what i’ve done wrong ? i think the gems and enchants are rt . i went from 2500 dps too 1200-1700. i really need some help . my toon name is koza on draka.

  150. Thorlaf

Raybeez the expertise is a wasted stat for you… Stack AP and Crit if you are staying BM… Hit crit AP and stam transfer to your pet… Anything over 8% is wasted for hit… BM your spec takes care of most of your haste needs…

Koza you are way over hit cap and short of haste and ArPen for a MM… need to try and balance your pieces so you have better secondary stats… Try to stay as close as you can to 263 hit cap and push for at least 300 haste and 400 ArPen… Just a gear wall… Spend some marks on the 226-245 lvl items in Dalaran…

I know this may sound strange but sometimes a lower iLVL piece is better for your spec… I have 2 251 item level pieces I have banked because I would lose haste/crit/ArPen for over load on hit so I still use the 245 item level pieces I have till I can work them in or upgrade past them… As you get higher level belts bracers rings and necks take care of your hit rating for most part so focus your other important secondary stats on trinks and prime armor pieces…

  151. Blunham

Great site and enjoying reading the posts but i have a real dilema
    1) hit rating is 395 (12.05%)
    2) arm pen is 502 ( 35.87%)
    3) crit rat is 815 (46.98%)
i have the shot rotation u gave but my dps is sooooo low usually around 2.8k – 3.2k in raids i get mullered by mages rogues and warriors don’t know whats wrong have some decent gear. Have gemmed mainly agi with a few crit and stam gems. I need major help to get my dps up to the other hunters we have in the guild. Aoe ain’t a problem on multiple targets but single target dps is woeful even with the rotation u gave

  152. Blunham

crap forgot to say i am MM spec

ok so not to think I am utterly Moronic but I have (at least) thought I was hit capped. I have my 3/3 Focused Aim and my “Ranged Stats” say 268 Hit Rating am I to believe that with my gear and talent that I am 104 over hit cap or am I just 5 over. I would really like to spend those points elsewhere if I can. Thank you.

  154. Gremlock

nvm I figured it out I freed up my talent points in Rawr just to test and it worked now once the server is up I will dispurse those talents elsewhere

  155. Balfaer

I’m having the same problem as “Blunham”.
i havent done any raids yet. im still doing 5m heroics. but my dps single target is around 2.5k-3.2k
    heres my stats
    Hit rating is 272 (8.03%)
    Arm Pen is 402 (28.72%)
    Crit rating is 754 (42.92%)
    Armory: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Dreadmaul&cn=Balfaer
I know theres more to improve once i start raiding and get some good gears from there.
My question is. Are my stats good enough to start doing 10m and 25m raids even though im doing 2.5-3k dps? because no1 seem to take me along when im LFG.
So at the moment im relying on my guild to take me to raids to get better gears and achievements
